Can the phone's internals get damaged from overheating? - Xiaomi Mi Note 3 Questions & Answers

So I was taking a long video of some landscape with my Mi Note 3, after about 20 minutes of filming, I noticed my phone was steaming hot, is this in any way dangerous?

No

Yes avoid heating as much as you can ( keep it away from the sun, etc) since no matter how good processor cooling is and how little it warms up it still can do some damage over time to the phone. It will for sure shorter device life.

[Q] Desire s overheating

My desire s gets extremely hot when charging and after 10 minutes gaming you can feel the heat coming from the screen. Is this normal ?
i have never felt any heat from the screen...
i have noticed the back get hot from intense usage(this is perfectly normal)
but i dont think it should get heated in 10 minutes...
wait for more replies i think you may have to send your device under warrenty
You know what...
I initialy thought it's the battery heating up(probably is also), but when i moved the phone to my cheek a could actualy feel the screen emitting heat.
This happened after about 20 min of angry birds .
P.S. No force restart though, so nothing to worry about
Same here. Thought it was only me. I did installed some app to monitor battery's heat and it reached like 45°C.
Never had heat come out of screen, only back-cover after intence use (including over cloaking cpu etc)
Just had my phone replaced.same problem.when i play pes its worse.the screen gets so hot you can burn yourself touching the screen
Yeah it happened to me initially...
But now alls k...
Phone seems cool as a ice (Kidding )...
So just give you Desire S sometime to settle in...
Yeah after some gaming i definitely can feel some heat from the screen.

Had the phone replaced twice in 3 days and all 3 phones over heat so thats the way they are meant to be so just have to limit gaming to 5 minutes.
maybe just reduce the backlight a bit?

Lol... why limit gaming to 5 minutes. 45 C is not much if you think what temp. nowdays procesors and other hardware can handle.
BTW my Desire also reached 45.C while gaming. So it's probably normal and the phone is made to handle this temp.
I had two Desires bust because of fried motherboards, so I just don't play games on the Desire S, not worth the risk
I'd have thought that with the new 2nd gen cpu, it would fix the overheating problem with the original desire.
Finally after 6 replacements in 2 weeks i have a handset that does not overheat and no more re-boots
Mine does gets overheated but never had any reboots.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk
Mine reboots every now and then and kindly emails HTC to tell them.
That never happened with the old Desire which just hit the reboot loop and fried the motherboard.
I wonder if there is a thermal cutout now?
well the back is aluminium so that's probably why it gets so hot.

this phone gets hot!

damn, gets hotter than my note 4! what's the max temp you've reached? I'm at 100 degrees f now just browsing around on my lunch hour. kinda annoying, honestly.. part of the reason I hated my Moto X Pure Edition was bc that thing would regularly hit 113 degrees and be annoying to hold. hopefully this snapdragon isn't as bad as the 808 was!
Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I would say that this is not normal. Mine does not get hot... only warm during gaming. Also the tests confirm that the phone does not get really hot. Maybe it is still in the set up phase?
could be! battery sucks today too haha. I'm also not using wifi ever.

Are you out in the sun when this happens? I have yet to see this phone get more than warm.
I have hotspot on and I am using a wireless QC2.0
The phone gets super hot until it reach 90%, then it becomes lukewarm.
At 100% charged, its very little warm.
Is this normal?

Yes, wireless charging heats up the phone a lot. The phone automatically slows the charging speed to prevent the phone from overheating.

nah. i was inside at work at lunch from like 12-1 browsing stuff. hangouts tends to get phones hot for some reason, and i was browsing other apps for like an hour straight. but yea, she didn't hit 100 luckily, but yeah, pretty damn warm.
Mine got really hot, M9 hot during the intial install of apps etc but only gets warm afterwards
This phone is by far the hottest I've had so far

Its not good to use the phone while charnging. Especially fast charging. Maybe very little use at most.
My phone has only got slightly warm, and that was while playing a racing game. Everything ells is room temps
Heat test.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV_1C-z0kkw
I don't feel any particular heat from mine, even while running intensive games or benchmarks, then again, I am using the Exynos variant.
A littlebit warm after 1 hour of Real Racing 3. Not hot at all. Htc one m7 was hot phone. .
Mine is charging right now with the fast charger, while streaming radio over bluetooth. Its warm, but not what I would call hot. My LG G3 got significantly hotter. Even playing with my Gear VR the other night it only got pretty warm, but I've no idea the actual temp, I just know it isn't as hot as my G3 would get sometimes just playing games.
Mine doesn't get really hot like my S5 or M9. The hottest ive experienced is like warm to the touch. Not HOT. Mind you, I'm wireless fast charging constantly.

Yeah at first I thought my S7 was cooler than my S6 Edge but even with just Web broswing for an hour or so the S7 is averaging like 90 degrees F. Current temp is 94. It's warm not "hot" but still annoying.
I think the Speck candyshell plastic case made it worse... trying to use bare now but still a bit warm.
I may have to go back to a flip case or something.
I hope I can get used to the warmth (tho I'd rather not have to -- def. annoying). Other than the warmth this phone completely rocks. I think I'll probably have to adjust because it's so damn amazing. I doubt any other phone can compare.
Name an Android phone as powerful as this one but which stays cooler... is there one?

Mine gets quite warm as well would sit around 32 degrees Celsius from browsing the Internet. I'm just worried if it's a defected device or not cause I have the exynos and some people don't even go over 25 degrees.
Yeah, I'm seeing this as well. Qualcomm variant. Just web-browsing for half an hour causes a pretty good bit of heat at the top of the phone, though I haven't checked the actual temperature.
I don't mind the heat itself, but the phone clearly start throttling and even just scrolling around in Chrome becomes laggy. Annoying.
A
lately mine has been ok surprisingly. not once did it even hit 90 today on lte all day. battery has also gotten a bit better. it's been a full week today since I got the phone, so who knows, maybe it really does take a week to settle which is kinda crazy lol

Brand new S6 feels warm in light use

Hey guys. I'm from Brazil and I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920I). My previous smartphone broke almost a month ago, so I may have gotten unused to a high end smartphone. It turns out that it is feeling warm during light use like browsing or Facebook. I can't tell if it started after the firmware update because it was one of the first things that I did when I turned it on for the first time. The temperatures that I am recording hovers around 38 °C to 44 °C. When I switch from Facebook to CPUz it is recording around 52 °C but starts dropping right away reaching around 43 °C. It is not hot, but it bugs me since it doesn't seem right to an octacore smartphone feel warm when browsing.
*I've just recorded a 1 minute video in ultra HD and when I switched to CPUz the temperature was at 70 °C, but also started to drop, stabilizing a little at 51 °C.
I've already cleared the cache and did a factory reset.
Do you guys think that I received a faulty smartphone?
I have the same problem on SM G920F which i bought several days before sometimes it goes around 36c battery and 63-64 cpu with no good reason for , like light usage(like messenger, snapchat) it works fine but its heating up and feels quite annoying for hand did anyone experienced same thing, and will buying a case for phone at least make feel better for hand?
Well, my phone was at 48 °C - 54 °C when it was in my front pocket and running only 4 apps on background (WhatsApp, CPUz, browsing, and outlook). It is not even hot in Brazil right now. Honestly it doesn't seem right!
It is normal. The CPU is just too powerful for heat to not build up.
Rest assured I played Walking War Robots on my phone for an hour and a half until my phone was hot enough for me to not be able to hold it comfortably. Nothing happened, I let it cool down for 10 minutes before Fast Charging it.
If it does not show any overheating message then it is not a problem.
Well considering it was built to be premium model its kinda dissapointing , like being 5 minutes on snapchat or 10 minutes of light usage makes him warm and a LOT of worse phones cant heat unless you like play games 10 minutes or really load them.If i put a case its heating like 10-15 % more.
I m suspicious because i havent seen a lot of people complaing about heating verry few people complainted about this. But phone is really great only problem (for me) is heating.

Thank you, I appreciate it.
It makes sense that such a powerful CPU would generate some heat, but at the same time simple processes like these
shouldn't cause any level of warmness. I also checked the battery temperature which could be damaging for the phone
and it didn't raise the temperature as much the CPU. My phone had just 2 days of use, so I sent it back and I'm waiting for
a replacement. I will keep you posted.

Well one thing seems very evident already to me even after only a day, the stanby battery drain is greatly improved compared to my note 8. Guess they were right when they said the SD845 was far less power hungry at idle. Now it still not iPhone level stanby time but for a Sammy it's damned impressive so far.

@iunlock, if you don't mind how many minutes (and seconds) does your S9+ take to complete the CPU and compute tests on Geekbench 4?
I have a note 8. Do u notice any different in scrolling smoothness. I really dont care about apps opening a milli second faster.

I have my Note 8 all jazzed up, locked down with all animations off so it is super quick. To an average person, one would not really be able to tell, but to the trained eye, the S9+ will seem just a tad bit snappier. It's not much difference though. (ie...You know those slow mo's that they show in races of first and second place crossing the finish line? It's close )

So far I'm not impressed with the battery life. Tbh my expectations were very low. I don't care much for SOT because I have wireless chargers at work and at home so quick to ups are easy. What I care about is sleep. My phone lost 6% in 7 hours overnight which isn't the end of the world but my pixel loses 2 or 3% in the same time frame. I thought the Snapdragon 845 was more energy efficient...

Hmm that's odd, because I've tested my S9+ multiple times next to my S8+ and it only lost 1% over night, whereas the S8+ lost 4%.
Have you debloated your phone from all the leaches? Try something like Hibernation manager, Greenify, and BK Package Disabler to clean up your system a bit.
Any leaking ship will sink so if you have apps that are running in the background (process) then there's your culprit.
One thing is for sure. The new SD845 is much more efficient than the SD835.

The difference is honestly astounding to me. My note 8 wouldve been dead 3-5x over compared to the kind of use I'm getting out of my s9+. I just spent the last 5 hours playing some dumb game on my phone and I'm only down to 60%. My note 8 wouldve been done about 3 hours in and I'd still be charging it up at this point. Very odd. I'm enjoying a 2-3% power drop over a 6-8 hour window. Think one night it was close to 4% but at this point splitting hairs.
So use to my old phones requiring me to charge overnight because they'd loose so much during that time with push notifications, apps updating, etc. This I can feel confident that I'm not going to kill it if I don't charge it overnight and thanks to quick charge its amazing that I can get a few hours use in no time.

From 0-100% takes more than 38 minutes of charging, Pls Help!!!

Hi,
I just bought Oppo Find X2 Pro Global version Dual Sim.
I have noticed that my phone does full charge from 0-100% takes more than 38 minutes, about 44 minutes mark. It is not like Oppo said 38 minutes. I have also changed the power source but no luck.
Does anyone know what might cause this as I have watched people testing their Find X2 Pro charging and it finishes in 38 minutes like Oppo advertised but not me.

Maybe those figures Oppo quoted were with the phone off? Have you tried that? As having the phone on whole charging does drain power and that amount of power will vary depending on your usage and what's running in the background

As I say though, depending on what's running on your phone, yours could be consuming more battery than the reviewers phones when they're testing the charge time.
Remember, these reviewers likely have a lot of phones, so won't be using each phone like you and I would, with lots of apps installed, running in the background etc.

No worries. Question though, does an extra 10 mins really make a difference to you? I know you've stated it as a reason, but do you often find yourself in a situation where you're sitting there waiting to go out and unable to do so as your phone takes 10 mins extra to charge to 100%?

Reviewer's phones always run closer to stock than average users are. Which mean, less background process, less draining while charging and that may be the case.

but oppo in their Reno ace series with 65W charging easily charged from 3 to 100% in 32 mins. i have the Reno ace 2 and it does the same in 35 mins. So surprised that it takes more time with a flagship model
I charged fromn 4 - 100 % in little less than 35 min today. Phone was on as usual.
I get to 100% in 37mins 59seconds
There's numerous factors that go in to it, temperature, apps running, outlet etc., I'd only be concerned if it was taking over a hour for example, my quickest 0-100% has been 33mins, longest has been 42 minutes, I'm overall really pleased, it's consistently on 100% by the time I've showered and dressed
