Get the XZP or XZ1? - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am thinking to get a used xzp or an xz1. I don't care much between their sizes but I do care for camera updates/features (and os updates). Which one would you go with?
Thanks!

If you care about software, then go for the XZ1. It has Treble, it has display flash and a new Dialer UI. The camera performance is the same as with the XZ P.

The XZP is a bigger phone and has a 4K HDR display. If you care about that then go XZP.

I think xz1 is appropriate.Xz1 is born with Oreo(8),but Xzp is born with Nougat(7).According to reliable news,Sony smartphone can update two system version,so xz1 can update to Android 10,but xzp can only update to Android 9, despite they have same CPU.
Forgive my grammar mistakes, after all, I'm a senior middle school student in China.

I would never look at that. When the official support is over, you root the phone and install custom Firmware.
I have Xperia V, which was released with 4.0 and got updated to 4.3, I own an Xperia ZR that began its path with 4.1 and ended on 5.0, and today both devices happily run 7.1.2.
You're on XDA DEVELOPERS FORUM, what the hell are you talking about, buying a different device instead of the one you want, because it's going to have 6 months less support?:laugh::laugh:
p.s. never apologize for your English until you're told you're bad at it. Most of the people who speak English are not native to English language anyway. Like myself, and most of the people at this forum.

I agree, most people on the Sony forums on xda has "poor" English. Mostly because Sony phones are more popular in Asia and EU than they are in the US. So the majority of Sony users are not native English speakers.

Get the XZ Premium. I'm a happy XZP user and i would recommed it to anyone looking to upgrade to a good Oreo phone. It might not get the "P" android update but it is a reliable phone, it does take good picture and 2 days battery( 4g/h+ or wifi always on, 2+ hours of music and video streaming per day, social networking, internet browsing, but no games). Only thing i wish it was louder: speakers volume. I never tried the XZ1 but just like you i had to choose betwwen the two and you know what i picked.

100% agreed here go for XZP.. .... thing is OP Youll find almost all phones nowadays are 2 years OS updates, 3 yrs security, including Google due to the fact that alot of people, at one time, tended to change their phones every year..
However, now-a-days in 2017 and more-so now in 2018... more and more people are holding onto their older devices, due to flagships being far too expensive (iPhone X, Galaxy Note 9, Xperia XZ2Prem..etc) and the so-called "Updates and New Flagships" features are so small and incremental.. that the huge prices dont justify these "little" upgrades...
Ive just come back to SONY after a break, with a Pre-owned, yet BNIB XZP... and while the camera is a little quirky and requires some tinkering to get the best out of it (I found using the hardware camera shutter button on the XZP caused camera shake and focus issues on images.. no matter how steady I held it, but pressing the "Virtual" shutter button on screen produced much better results.. )... Its a fantastic device.. still getting 6 weekly - 2 Monthly updates, great screen, Speakers are excellent and much louder now on Oreo than they were under 7 Nougart.. although could be even louder, 3.5mm Jack.. battery life is good..
And we will "eventually", get Android P...

Worth the cost over an XZ1

Hi,
I already got the Xperia xz almost new for 250$ CDN.
The main reason is that xz is dowmgradeable to 6 (for drm keys backup)
Android P is okay but based on what I was reading in the past it was only a possibility for the XZP..
Battery wise Android 6 is way better though but for now I'm enjoying 8.
Thx

Good to hear you got sorted... The xz is a great device, I know it's still being updated like the premium... i don't really go for downgrading or custom ROMs myself though, and the screen is a little on the small side for me...
Enjoy ?

[Q] Sony Xperia S or Sony xperia SP??

Hello everyone, i want to buy a new smartphone and i'm really confused. After searching a lot (i mean a lot!) , i narrowed down my choice to these two,i.e, sony xperia s and upcoming sony xperia sp (my budget is not that high for those fancy s3,s4 or htc one). Now, i'm confused more than before that which one should i go for, i could really use some advice from the experts out here (yeah noob here :silly: ). And please keep the topic to these two only, don't wanna go to a hospital 'cause of serious pain in head .
I am in the same boat as you because I considered upgrading but at the same time don't have the necessary budget. Between the two though choice becomes do you want 4G support, upgraded bluetooth and other features such as NFC and the new GPS system (GLONASS). I am personally waiting for the Xperia SP to come out so I can compare the two in my hand. Alternatively I might settle for the Xperia T as a midpoint of the two.
What do you think?

Yeah, really confused between the two. I live in New delhi, India , so 4g does not really matter for me (not available here). I don't care much about upgraded bluetooth as i don't use it very often but still nice to have a newer version . NFC, oh yes , i would love to try it, but i think it's available with both of them, isn't it?? .
Umm idk much about that new gps system but i would like to know about it .
I'm also waiting for XSP to release here (probably on 24apr) and get my hands on it in a nearby store and also waiting for the jelly bean update for the XS and see what it has to offer .
What i am confused about is should i go for the new hardware or the old one, because i don't think it won't matter much since both phones are dual cores. Yeah i know i know, there is a big difference between the two phones in benchmarks , but i don't think it will matter much in real daily life usage , like messaging , social sites, browsing, watching videos and a little gaming . Or will it??
Also, i'm more comfortable with 4.3 inch screen than a 4.6 inch one , don't ask why :cyclops: but i really like the power button placement in the XSP . OH GOSH I'M SO CONFUSED .

NFC will have more features on the XSP compared to XS since it will have updated support through Jellybean OS.
GLONASS allows for a quicker and more accurate GPS detection through the phone and is much more reliable than the older system.
I agree benchmarks aren't important unless you are a power user and do lots of intense gaming and other applications. I also have an inclination to a slightly smaller screen but if the phone is worth it can make an exception
Overall if you want the smoothest system your best bet would be to use a custom rom like CyanogenMod or another version on your phone. Stock Sony ICS is not that great in any case. That way you can remove a lot of the unnecessary apps. I do believe there are stable versions of jellybean 4.2.2 for the XS also on the forums here on XDA :good:
An improvement that I am looking forward to is the STAMINA mode on XSP which should double battery life at least. Can read about it online through Sony website or online previews regarding the phone.
I think best thing is wait another week or two and play with both phones then make a decision. You have waited this long after all

hmm okay....yup i'm not that into hardcore gaming on my phone, have my pc for that . I rarely Play games on my phone, the ones i play are those small games like cut the rope , trial xtreme , cogs ,etc nothing like gta or those fancy gameloft games . I mostly am concerned about the battery life of the phone because usually 3g is like always on for me, and texting all day with friends on whatsapp , FB , etc.. So XSP's bigger battery is really what's making me buy that phone (other features as well ) , don't wanna carry a charger with me all the time :silly: and also i love that notification transparent strip of the XSP...whereas XS has better camera and more pixels coz of the 4.3 inch screen rather than 4.6 . I Also read over the internet that stock ics of XS is bit laggy so let's see what jelly bean update does :fingers-crossed: , or there will custom roms here as usual :highfive: .
All i can do is wait for it to release . Btw does 4.6 or 4.3 inch really make that much difference in size and both screens are same right, i mean tft?? Sorry i am a complete noob here...
And Ohh XT is not available here in India, So don't have that option :'(

I am confused between the two because of the camera performance . But I would suggest you to Xperia SP if its under your budget , because its probably the best midrange device in the market now , even beats previous years quad core devices ( s3,one-x ..) in terms of performance . Just wait for the camera review of SP because some early reviews say that the camera performance is poor than the rest of features it gives . And if camera is not a ground breaker for you then no doubts you should go and buy it , so far it looks a promising device . Xperia S probably wont get Android 5 , but the chances of SP getting it is more .If the camera is decent on final units then SP is the best device to buy .
edit- you also get whopping 2370 mAh battery

Yeah , you are right about the camera of XSP , the review i saw here was also saying that the camera of the XSP is not that good as expected :
http://asia.cnet.com/product/sony-xperia-sp-46728910.htm
It's an early review , so i'll wait for some more reviews to know about the camera quality. It's a real shame that considering the price of the phone we don't get a good camera , but won't jump onto conclusions yet!:fingers-crossed:
XS took so long to get jelly bean (still not updated yet) , so yea you can be right that it won't get Android 5( limepie?? ) and XSP probably will as it is newer phone but , in case of sony there is a big BUT , we have seen how late sony releases the android upgrade on it's phones .
Also, what about the viewing angles of the screen ?? i have read that they are pretty bad on both handsets...:silly:

Does viewing angle matter? If someone is looking at it they we won't be holding the screen at a sharp angle so they can't see the whole picture
I think that is an unnecessary point of contention. If anything I want a smaller viewing angle so when I am on the bus or something I don't have someone else peeking at my screen. I prefer a bit of privacy

I dont know if viewing angles is deal breaker . We all see the phone from front most of the times , i dont know why reviews compare the viewing angles . The normal viewing display will be great as its sony device with bravia engine 2 . Now just wait for a full review by some reputed websites . Then go and see the device on a local store , because you are paying this much amount so you should do research so that u dont regret it later . I am doing the same . I will wait for a month until i get in a college and then decide what i am gonna buy ,for me things will be clear till that ( it will also make me clear that how many people will actually buy it and how good community it will have on xda ) . If you cant wait then wait for camera samples of final retail units , if you are satisfied with camera then its the best device out there (there seems no issues with anything else ) .Otherwise You totally get value for money in SP , no doubts and it is future proof. BTW it depends on how you use your device , if you are not going to use this much performance then frankly telling you that you should not waste money on this . If you use a phone just for normal things then xperia s/sl is also good when it gets JB . :good:
Hmm you both are right, mostly seeing the screen from the front , but when you are with someone or some friends and want to share a video with them then might be a problem....but that shouldn't be much of a problem, stupid of me to bring that question .
XS has a low battery life btw which really makes me don't wanna buy it , i am so much frustrated with my current phones battery life ( wildfire s LOL ) which i just want to throw in a sewer .

So Gsmarena has this phone in their hands , a full review is coming up in short time .Hopefully we will get all our answers there and of-course here on xda.
I own a xperia s,if u need a good camera go for xperia s.its really fast but the official update is buggy and there are no jb custom roms with full hd recording.if ics is okay,go with xperia s

My Thoughts on XPERIA L updates

Hello Guys, Many of us complian about we dont know any Informations yet about an Android 4.3 update.
Today i looked on PTCRB (still nothing new) ,but i looked up the PTCRB page about the XPERIA U (predecessor of the XPERIA L). And it got tons of Certified updates (Most of them are Minor Updates but there are two Major Updates listed) , so i think we should get more than these 6 Updates
I Have attached an Image about the 2 PTCRB Pages
What do you think about my thoughts let me know !

The updates are pretty poor and communication from Sony is awful. Why they choose to update Xperia M (underspec'd compared to the L) is beyond me. But then again, they released 4.4 ASOP for L. Maybe if they release a fully functional generic 4.4 ASOP that would heal the wound

I would be happy with 4.4 ASOP without any Sony Junk if Sony can't be bothered to release 4.3
It's not great customer service and it means a very good phone won't become updated and I won't buy Sony again. If they plan to update say so, if it's end of life. Say so.
I have a feeling they will do nothing, wait till 18 months support period has expired then drop it.

Actually I am almost sure for two things:
Sorry won't release anything more for that expensive brick, because it looks for me that there is more hardware issues and maybe lack of drivers from Qualcomm. Also keep in mind crappy cameras (both of them are awful), totally bad touchscreen and most awful brand - they became more "stay away brand" than chinese ZTE and Huawei brands, which these days here are considered as OK here ...
Personally my Xperia L would not survive to the end of warranty - either it will be sold on half of it's price or will be killed - today it flied ~6 times to the floor, because 9 times sound got routed to earpiece instead of speaker.
Generally this Sony are scammers these days and should not be trusted for anything. Btw this was my last product from Sony - they are gone in my blacklist like HP and Nokia.... got very bad experience with these brands and will never come back to them.

Okay at the Moment i have no issues with the camera and the Touchscreen maybe i have chosen a good modell of the L, but you are right if Sony wouldnt make updates fort this phone they would become a stay away brand and at the moment Sony must work harder on Updates because they have not much money at the time and that is the Problem of Sony they release too much phones and gave no Updates other brands like Samsung gave the S2 4.1 and at this time the s2 was 2 years old and the arc s Sonys Flagship at the Time never saw 4.1
PS I really like Sony they made good and Products but Support on the Phones they make is really bad
I'll explain you some facts!
If you look at xperia U and Xperia L, they both were updated for about a year. The number of updates for xperia U only means, developers were lazy to fix bugs so they had to push more small patches to fix the bugs!
If you still want to question, xperia L has a month left in comparison to xperia U, I'll like you not to overlook x.x.x.17 update which isn't mentioned in the image!
About xperia M got 4.3 and not xperia L, the reason is that xperia M was released few months after xperia L; thus the support for one year meant, it had to be updated till 4.3 but xperia L had completed its one year when the time to update lower end devices came!
If you are wondering, if we would get 4.4 or 4.3 , it is highly UNLIKELY! Don't put your hopes too high!
The reason why source for 4.4 was released, it was only to shut mouth of xperia L owners so it could seem, Sony is working on 4.4 for xperia L and in the mean time, the time frame of one year of update could pass! 4.4 was supposingly in works for xperia L until, Sony decided to ditch it and released buggy 4.4 so it could work on new devices which were released by Sony like M2, T3 etc.
I hope this enlightenment would be enough for you all!

The problem, in my opinion, is that there are tons of people which cannot unlock their bootloader (like me) due to carrier restrictions. We are stuck with stock pretty much forever. And it sucks.

True ****in story. I spent a ****load of money on this rock and now i cant even flash a custom decent rom, not to talk about the ****tiest stock kernel i've seen in a phone. **** you Sony, **** you carriers and **** you overpriced phones. I bough this for 200 euros and my carrier is asking me 50 more to unlock the carrier status so that i could be able to go to sony and unlock the bootloader. Tell me if this isnt a joke! And remember, its not 250 bucks, its 250 euros, about 340 bucks! WTF???
With this ammount of money i should have bought a nexus 5 and i wouldnt have to care about this problems. never buying a phone in my country again.
Good luck for you guys and i wish the best to all unlocked bootloader. Im seriously thinking about selling my phone if i dont get a proper update.
If sony can afford making phones, they should also be able to give them proper technical support...

Yeha but they all are based on Stock and Stock is not that good
I dont say the roms based on Stock are bad but the Stock 4.2.2 is too buggy
Today's answer from Sorry mobile Bulgaria
Boys and girls (of course!)
Today I have contacted Sorry mobile Bulgaria regarding bug fixing update (I did not pretend for 4.3 or 4.4 - just a bug fixing update, whatever version of Android they want to release) and there was short answer - There is no known date from Sony mobile for update of Xperia L, and there is no known update to come. Rest of message was their usual "Sorry for you troubles, please repair via SUS" and other blah-blah stuff.
Whole Question and answer is in txt file in attachment. If you want to know whole question and answer - feel free to use Google/Bing translate services from Bulgarian....

If they produce 3 phones in year and focus on their support for a longer time than release date + 3 months, probably they would get more users, respect from them and of course - more profit. With their policy to release bunch of garbage every month, they won't get any new customers and they are already on path to lose their old customers. I am personally one of big count of users which will never come back to SoRRy - there is simple explanation: New Xperia L on store are sold for 345BGN without contract, Xperia L sold on second hand sites with ~1 year and more warranty left is sold at 180-200BGN. My 4 years old HTC Desire on same second hand sites costs 100-180BGN depending on how it looks. BGN - stands fro New Bulgarian Leva (I am Bulgarian).

Please discuss new 3D camera in newly XZ1;possible port before get it in Oreo update?

News from XZ1 annouce is very excited me about 3d camera, beyond that it is good news that after XZP get Oreo update it will equip with this features. So my guest is it is not hardware so i create thread to discuss about possibility to port this from XZ1 to XZP any thought?

Dam really why did you want to? i just got mine and its awesome.
3D creator app is going to be available on the XZP.
Says so here:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2017/09/01/sonys-3d-creator-app-is-coming-to-the-xz-premium
Other changes include autofocus burst and the predictive capture features.
They should release those features to Premium. I mean XZP is superior to these phones they released. Plus I think they sold many XZP devices.
Mainly people will buy it because of smaller screen. I see everyone is talking about bezels so I think it's time for Sony to go for a design change.
Really whats to stop them rolling out 8.0 on our XZP straight after the XZ1... aren't they are identical aside from battery and screen. its the sony apps that switch res right? but I guess even if that were right We have already bought the XZP and 8.0 is a tool to sell a new phone.

Camera distortions, annoying software notifications and icon numbers and some you'll need to agree to extra stuff before you can even stop them and even though I am on the latest FW I find the fingerprint reader pretty hit or miss sometimes it works flawless other times it have to resort to pin coz it give me a too many attempts message.... and I have my thumb done twice to try to help stop that
Yes i know as i said that it will gain this features after updated to Oreo late on. But i think it should have to way to get it earlier or extract from XZ1, any ideas?

Some questions about U12+ before making a switch

I currently own an iPhone X but I feel like iOS 11 is garbage in lots of aspects compared to it's predecessors and also notch is annoying when watching movies.. I've used to own Samsung S/Note phones but I am done with their laggy TouchWiz/Samsung Experience UI. That said, U12+ looks like a phone worth giving a shot. I like to take videos and photos with my phone so camera plays an important role. Is it good? Does it have any major overheating issues? Second thing - how does HTC deal with updates? Can I count on receiving security updates in 1-2 months or they don't really care much? The last thing is battery - I currently get to around 4,5h SoT with my iPhone, any chance HTC performs the same or better? I will be grateful for any responses before I spend my money

Let me try to answer some of your questions:
1. Camera: It has the best Camera right after the P20 Pro. So you should be all set here, and gain great results from it.
2. Overheating: It is on the release software 1.15.401.4 getting warmer, but not that hot, from time to time, due to some improvement on clocking of the CPU that are necessary. This has been dealt with and an update is currently starting to roll out and address such issues.
3. Updates: It has been an up and down during the last years to be honest. But HTC finally established so called QMRs (Quaterly Maintenance Releases) for the U12+ as well the U11. As I write the OTA is imminent to roll out to all variants now. The may jump an QMR if there are no security patches by Google that explicitly adress their very devices. To understand the often misguided discussion about that very topic you might make yourself familiar with the Google Security Bulletin, and what it tells you.
4. SoT: I always get 5 - 7h SoT with battery holding up for 24h. I'm quite pleased by those results imho.

Hi!
So I own iPhone X from about 2 months, and I owned iPhone from the first iPhone 2G! ... anyway I don't like anymore iOS , especially the iOS 11
Anyway:
1) HTC u12+ is a fast and fluid phone, I can say that is smoother than iPhone x
2) Photo and Video are better than iPhone x, the autofocus is fast, the colour are correct and the final image is amazing, in many ways better than pixel 2xl that it is a monster camera phone.
3) no major overheating issues.. somethimes under the sun at 35 Celsius can happen a little bit warm but not in a normal day
4) htc is fast to update to every new mayor release of android, until now the secure patch was slow but it seems that is changed now (read up)
5) battery is good but i think will be better with the new upcoming update (and better than iPhone x)
6) I can say only this.. the phone is very good: remember only that is a little bigger than iPhone x, and the screen is more accurate in color than iPhone x but is less brighter so if you work outside all the day maybe is not the best choice for you, if you work in a office or you don't stay all day under the sun is great
ciao !
Get iOS 12 betas a try?
It's been getting some serious good points for a beta compared to iOS 11.
Also if it managed to hold you off until September when it's finalized. The U12 will.be cheaper with HTC discounts or mint condition used phones on resale sites.
By then you'll have more information on the fall phone releases.

Are you serious!? My U11 Flagship stucks in 2.33.401.10 (what is WWE, not branded) Patch Level 11/2017 Android 8.0. We have 7/2018!
Well, my wife's U11 life get updates because of AndroidOne -today my U12+ 128GB arrived, very disappoited, also no Android One, 8.0 -at least Patchlevel 3/2018. Some Options appear in....don't know! You ever happened to check security with SnoopSnitch, as it would show that the U11 is still secure. And did you ever check the Google Security Bulletin, if there are updates affecting HTC, or if not. This update discussion is absolutely unnecessary, due to the fact that the Patch Level is only half of the truth and information. But nobody cares to take in all information needed. You neither guessing by you post.

he talked about the major android updates and yes, HTC updates phones fast, when switching from let's say nougat to Oreo, or in the case soon from Oreo to P
also from where did you get the device? if it's from EMEA, then it's normal you might face issues with language, since you got a 128gb version, which is not available in Germany

I really feel a litte bit like an beta tester -normaly Android is spread in all languages, and (as I'm an IT guy) I kow that there are compairing tools -is somethig have an gap -you will noticed.
And I really like HTC -I buy it since 2002 -16 Years! At least2 device, for me and my wife, additional for work and employees -let's say roundabout 4 devices at 16 years -that will be 64 at a minimum -plus all I have to support from my family and fried which I have recommended to friend and customer. Round it up to 150, beginning from Typhoo, Feeler and the whole spectrum.
It makes a litle bit sad if you always try to buy Flagships and waiting for updates. My Samsung A5, a really low cost Device says in weeks, not moths, there are Updates. :|
And as I'm IT Professional -better then Antivirus and other just cobble things which are just follow vulnerabiles is to get a Patch for it. I have the problem that I get annoyed fram Ads -and I just have some Apps installen, no games, no bull**** -mostly buyed full versions. And "tap and hold" to see which process the Ad cause doe not work -they find a new way to cover it. :/
Patches really elp, in special he great december Update from Android AFAIR...
Is it really to much to expect to get more then one or two updates after paying 700+ Euro, and can read all menue?

When will XZ Premium get Android Pie?

Does anyone know when will we get Android Pie update on our phones?

Seems unlikely, as there isn't any formal nod that XZ range are getting 8.1 yet.
Maybe end of the year
I got my update notification today
It only depends if Sony decides to skip 8.1 or not.
XZP is entitled for one more version upgrade if I'm not mistaken, either 8.1 or 9.
But since they didn't release 8.1 for any model yet, maybe they skip it and go for the 9 instead, which would be nice. 8.1 really isn't much of an upgrade, anyways, it does seem pointless to spend dev time and resources into pushing it.
I'm happy with Oreo as it is, but I would like if we got the new launcher they are developong for P, and see how they handle gesture navigation. Removing the bottom navigation bar would give us more screen realestate, but somehow I doubt they will do that for older devices, even with new launcher. Not to mention getting the latest Camera apk and API, XZP and XZ1 can handle the processing used in XZ2 lineup, it's just a matter of software.
8.1 is already released in march security update. Thats why xposed framework bugs out
XZ premium will get android p. Xperia z3 had 4.4, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, nougat test
XZ p only had 7.1, 8.0
P also support 120hz by standard so can't wait

I prefer they give us more screen realestate with a larger screen in the next one rather than smaller bezels and a notch. I can't rap my head around some of the stupidest things being pushed into the industry that none of their customers asked for. Seeing the XZ2 Premium though, I don't think they are going to be making many more phones.

If so that's gonna be awesome as heck. That's gonna be amazing cus I've wanted this feature. Like the xz2p has 144hz tho that's alot on a phone. If we get to experience 120hz on this phone though that makes it more worthy.
Hi.
I just read this news. It's coming in September. It will be rolling to many devices and xz premium from them.
It is coming soon
Now android p is a part of sony open devices program and you can build android p for open devices.
This is edited : Android Pie will be available on September for Xperia XZ premium ; XZ1 compact ; XZ1 ; XZ2 premium ; XZ2 compact and XZ2
The rollout of Pie will begin in September for listed devices and will continue till November/December, so I doubt the XZP (the oldest on the list) will get it in September.
That being said, it's getting it either way which is really great.
Couple of things I would like from this upgrade: ditching the navigation buttons at the bottom for more usable screen realestate, updated camera app and processing algorythms from XZ2 and the new launcher Sony is working on, but I don't think they planned it for Pie release.
Also, one thing that boggled my mind since the phone was released, not giving us the option to lower the framerate of super slowmo videos so you could actually use that thing. Capturing at the right moment at 960FPS for a second is next to impossible. Great feature, backed by smart powerfull hardware, botched by software. There is no legit reason why I shouldn't be able to lower the framerate to let's say 450FPS and still make some badass slowmo shots. If it can do 960, it can do less for a longer time, but nobody at Sony thought of that simple thing. Pretty much business as usual with Sony's camera apps.
