Seems unlikely, as there isn't any formal nod that XZ range are getting 8.1 yet.
Maybe end of the year

I got my update notification today

It only depends if Sony decides to skip 8.1 or not.
XZP is entitled for one more version upgrade if I'm not mistaken, either 8.1 or 9.
But since they didn't release 8.1 for any model yet, maybe they skip it and go for the 9 instead, which would be nice. 8.1 really isn't much of an upgrade, anyways, it does seem pointless to spend dev time and resources into pushing it.
I'm happy with Oreo as it is, but I would like if we got the new launcher they are developong for P, and see how they handle gesture navigation. Removing the bottom navigation bar would give us more screen realestate, but somehow I doubt they will do that for older devices, even with new launcher. Not to mention getting the latest Camera apk and API, XZP and XZ1 can handle the processing used in XZ2 lineup, it's just a matter of software.

8.1 is already released in march security update. Thats why xposed framework bugs out
XZ premium will get android p. Xperia z3 had 4.4, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, nougat test
XZ p only had 7.1, 8.0
P also support 120hz by standard so can't wait

I prefer they give us more screen realestate with a larger screen in the next one rather than smaller bezels and a notch. I can't rap my head around some of the stupidest things being pushed into the industry that none of their customers asked for. Seeing the XZ2 Premium though, I don't think they are going to be making many more phones.

If so that's gonna be awesome as heck. That's gonna be amazing cus I've wanted this feature. Like the xz2p has 144hz tho that's alot on a phone. If we get to experience 120hz on this phone though that makes it more worthy.

Hi.
I just read this news. It's coming in September. It will be rolling to many devices and xz premium from them.
It is coming soon

Now android p is a part of sony open devices program and you can build android p for open devices.

This is edited : Android Pie will be available on September for Xperia XZ premium ; XZ1 compact ; XZ1 ; XZ2 premium ; XZ2 compact and XZ2

The rollout of Pie will begin in September for listed devices and will continue till November/December, so I doubt the XZP (the oldest on the list) will get it in September.
That being said, it's getting it either way which is really great.
Couple of things I would like from this upgrade: ditching the navigation buttons at the bottom for more usable screen realestate, updated camera app and processing algorythms from XZ2 and the new launcher Sony is working on, but I don't think they planned it for Pie release.
Also, one thing that boggled my mind since the phone was released, not giving us the option to lower the framerate of super slowmo videos so you could actually use that thing. Capturing at the right moment at 960FPS for a second is next to impossible. Great feature, backed by smart powerfull hardware, botched by software. There is no legit reason why I shouldn't be able to lower the framerate to let's say 450FPS and still make some badass slowmo shots. If it can do 960, it can do less for a longer time, but nobody at Sony thought of that simple thing. Pretty much business as usual with Sony's camera apps.

When will we get Nougat on our xperia XA???,

Hey everyone! According to the the Sony update roadmap Sony Xperia XA was supposed to be updated sometime in early 2017 (Jan-March) but it's May now.. I want the update asap Does anyone knows when will we get update????? thank you!
Samsung has already rolled out the Nougat update for Galaxy A5 (2016) users in Russia, it is also important to note that Sammy's version of Android is more customized than Sony's.
So this is how Sony treats consumers who bought their mid-range phones, my next Android phone is going to be either a Pixel or a Samsung one.
Sony is awful with support for mid range phones.Check at this we really are the last ones to get it!

I agree with you. My previous experience with Sony is good actually. I had a Flagship though.. (Xperia Z3). Pixel isn't officially available here in UAE. They are available here unofficially but they would cost me around whopping 800-900$! I won't switch to Samsung because I prefer Stock UI and Sony's UI. I thought of switching to Huawei but they aren't good with the Software updates either. (Security patches..). I would switch to Nokia 6 or 5 whenever its available at my place.

Agree with you. This is a big disappointment from Sony. I had a Xperia M2 Aqua and the Lollipop update didn't take so long (like 2 months). Also this phone has a lot of bugs (the battery drain, some xposed modules make crash the phone, apps like YouTube sometimes stop working). My next phone will be a Galaxy, Sony's phone quality decreased the last years.

Scamsung mid-range devices are not better and have some problems too. If you compare XA with S7 or S8 you will make me laugh for hours.

Think you'll find the lollipop update for the m2 took almost 6mths to arrive from it being announced(may) to it actually arriving (beginning of October). The Nougat update for the xa is its final update so don't expect it before the device is at least a year on the market it'll probably arrive in the autumn some time
Sent from my Xperia XA using XDA Labs
Annoyingly they'll probably give us 7.0 and not 7.1, all this delay and still not the very latest version. Though only time will tell-my XA is running flawlessly on MM.
Lesson Learned!
Last Sony device I purchase! Never seen such terrible support and developers. If I had missed deadlines by several months, I would no longer be working where I currently work. Unacceptable!

Please discuss new 3D camera in newly XZ1;possible port before get it in Oreo update?

News from XZ1 annouce is very excited me about 3d camera, beyond that it is good news that after XZP get Oreo update it will equip with this features. So my guest is it is not hardware so i create thread to discuss about possibility to port this from XZ1 to XZP any thought?

Dam really why did you want to? i just got mine and its awesome.
3D creator app is going to be available on the XZP.
Says so here:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2017/09/01/sonys-3d-creator-app-is-coming-to-the-xz-premium
Other changes include autofocus burst and the predictive capture features.
They should release those features to Premium. I mean XZP is superior to these phones they released. Plus I think they sold many XZP devices.
Mainly people will buy it because of smaller screen. I see everyone is talking about bezels so I think it's time for Sony to go for a design change.
Really whats to stop them rolling out 8.0 on our XZP straight after the XZ1... aren't they are identical aside from battery and screen. its the sony apps that switch res right? but I guess even if that were right We have already bought the XZP and 8.0 is a tool to sell a new phone.

Camera distortions, annoying software notifications and icon numbers and some you'll need to agree to extra stuff before you can even stop them and even though I am on the latest FW I find the fingerprint reader pretty hit or miss sometimes it works flawless other times it have to resort to pin coz it give me a too many attempts message.... and I have my thumb done twice to try to help stop that
Yes i know as i said that it will gain this features after updated to Oreo late on. But i think it should have to way to get it earlier or extract from XZ1, any ideas?

Android 8.0 Oreo

Has anyone have info on when the s8 going to get the Android 8.0 Oreo update?
If i had to guess id say December or early January.

Yeah, I agree; from what I read, it didn't sound like Oreo changes much for someone on S8+ Nougat. Nougat is a good version of Android; Samsung polishes that and it's hard to substantially improve what's already working rather well.

Yeah, the phone expeerience won't see many significant changes over the 7.1.1 build expected this/next month. Apart from the cleaner adaptive icons UI to make icons look more inline with one another (in supported apps) without the ugly white background with the normal icon on top.
But DeX mode will see big advantages! i.e. mouse capture will enable you to play first person shooter games just like you would on a PC!, better multi-display technology will enable you to run a dual monitor setup in DeX!, Picture in picture mode will enable you to watch a video in a more clean UI (no titlebar showing) in the corner of your screen while you run other apps along-side in fullscreen.
And thats just a few of the improvements that could come to the PC/DeX experience! :fingers-crossed::victory:
Why does everyone wait for changes in the UI, forgetting about the changes in the kernel of the system? Personally, I'm much more interested in improving security in 8.0, autofill API and stuff.
And with fear I'm waiting for the gluttony of the new version)

Also the new driver model, making it easier to upgrade to future Android versions even after the devices end of life and keeping the GPU drivers upto date via the Play store can help to boost performance and security more frequently, without the need to upgrade the devices firmware!
Just adding to the last two posts: I am missing app shortcuts a lot. Samsung is somehow lazy (as in the past) with updates, they are usually 1 year behind, even for their flagship devices, not to mention their "second row".
7.1.1 build next month??? Meh....it should be 7.1.2....again: Typical for Samsung.

I would like the app shortcuts as well, but it's not just Samsung that is lazy on that bit, and for the 7.1.2, Isn't that mainly for the Pixel phones? 7.1.1 is what all accept Pixel is using and have used for the last months.
But I think that the S8/S8+ should have come with 7.1.1 out of the box, but glad to see that we get the latest security patches each month.

Yeah, I hope that Samsung gives us the adaptive icons, I love the stock Samsung launcher, but it looks so bad when most of the icons doesn't match the rest of the UI, and not to talk about if you try to use some custom icons from the theme store, that sh*t gets ugly fast.
With regards to app shortcuts, I believe that requires Android 7.1.1/SDK 25 to work correctly...

I agree, kernel changes are important too. It would be great take source code for Oreo S8/S8+ kernel (i.e., when published), add support for various useful stuff, then compile your own modified kernel. International S8/S8+ people are lucky, but US Snapdragon S8/S8+ owners are screwed until bootloader unlock....
as long as knox stays on our phones well never get anything that samsung doesnt publish

And who knows, perhaps Samsung will be nice and do it like the Pixel with full compliance even if they don't have to, but I doubt it.

How to replace Xperia XZ Premium's ROM with a Treble ROM.

I was wondering if it's possible to replace my current official ROM with a Treble supported ROM.?
my current spec:
Android version: 8.0.0
Model: G8142
Android Security Patch Level: May 2018
I've heard that phones that come with Android Oreo preinstalled only they support Treble, but my phone had Android 7.1 originally when I first bought it so I'm not sure if it supports Treble. and it's kinda important because that means my phone can get future Android versions just like an IPhone.

I dont think thats the case though I mean every company releases updates to their products untill they decide not to.
for instance at sony as I recall every flagship continues to get updates for 2 years after doesnt matter if it came with oreo or nougat.
and I think that companies sell producs as they are since they first came out, for instance, when the XZP came out it had nougat which means even if you buy a year after it would still come with nougat, unless Sony made more XZP units after the oreo update was released which is highly doubtful.

well technically that is not the case, as treble project is separating the software code from the hardware code, as untill nougat once google update is released the CPU manufcature should also release an update that can work with the new google update, they rely on eachother, so for example our XZP supports snapdragon 835, when google releases an update, snapdragon has to release an update for the CPU that can understand and work with the new google update, THEN sony decides if they want to work on these update and "combine them" and release it for their XZP.
but after the treble project, this will no longer be an issue, as when google releases an update, the CPU manufacture doesnt have to release an update to work with it. the codes are now "separated", to my understanding the google update doesnt have to get a hardware update to understand it but instead it LEARNS the hardware that its sitting on and work with it as compatible without having the manufacture teach it, which means once google releases an update, Sony doesnt have to wait for snapdragon to release an update to work with it, it just work on its own, Sony just modifies it in their own ways and terms and then release it to the customers, but still it will take a lot less time, and software will always be compatible and released with time
and as I understood:
"1) If your device never gets updated to Oreo, it will never get Project Treble. No way around that. Sorry.
2) If your device does get updated to Oreo, it’s still not required to support Treble—that’s up to the manufacturer.
3) If you buy a new phone that runs Oreo out of the box, it is required to support Treble out of the box."
now looking at the 3rd option, every phone WILL and not only MIGHT support Treble.
BUT looking at 2nd option, it MIGHT, which means if sony decides so, it will,
and again, once a manufacture releases a device, it will always stay on the same android version, even if you buy it after it receives an update, out of the box our XZP will come with nougat even if you buy it in 2020 thats just how phones work once released, software stays the same out of the box. but its up to sony to decide if we get Treble support and you cant install a custom rom to get Treble because it requires root, and once you root you wont get OTA's from the manufacture, which means you wont get any updates afterwards unless you unroot which gets you back to square one.
in conclusion, its up to sony to decide wether we get Treble support or not.
and to add, even if we dont get Treble support, sony will still release updates to our XZP for the next year at least and after that its really not worth updating.
every update becomes heavier and requires more horsepower to run as smoothly as possible with the least battery consumption, after 2 years I really wouldnt want to update even if an update was available as it WILL slow my device down and consume more battery because newer updates usualy have more features and improved technology that youd have to get a new device with improved hardware to fully enjoy them without having downsides, I mean only after Oreo my battery became worse and phone became a little laggy every now and then Id have to restart, imagine after 1 or 2 more updates.
to make the idea more vivid, take your iphone example, how do you think iphone 6 handles the latest update? certainly not as smooth as before, or iphone 5s, they became so laggy compared to how they were before, and its not because they aged, they are not human beings, machines dont age, maybe battery does wear out but to get slower? thats just due to heavy software and bloat.
hope that was helpful

to make the idea more vivid, take your iphone example, how do you think iphone 6 handles the latest update? certainly not as smooth as before, or iphone 5s, they became so laggy compared to how they were before, and its not because they aged, they are not human beings, machines dont age, maybe battery does wear out but to get slower? thats just due to heavy software and bloat.
hope that was helpful

Thank you for the explanation, It was great.
Though I kinda disagree with the last part. for example I have a friend who had Android 7.1 on his galaxy S3, and it was running fine, empty from bloatware.
and the whole idea of making custom ROMs like Cyanogen and forums like XDA is build on that, to give Android phones a new life once the actual developers stop doing so.
Android definitely Should follow the path of Apple and Microsoft with Windows 10.
I have a Vaio Sony Laptop from 2010 and when I first got that it had a Windows home 7 on it, but now it has Windows 10 Pro x64 Redstone 4 and with the way Windows 10 works I'm sure I'll get future Redstone updates too, because these updates don't break anything and I get all the required drivers through the Windows update itself.
So the point is, Android phones specially the flag ships have the potential to be updated just like Apple IPhone products, and Treble is a great step towards this goal.
Yes phone batteries do get wear out that's why we should change their batteries every few years.

You cant compare custom roms to official OTA. because devs of the roms tend to clean the rom as much as possible from un-needed bloat therefor making it super fast and consumes less battery.
for instance, my brother has a galaxy s5 with 6.0.1 on it, I rooted the phone for him, and installed a custom 8.0 rom and it became laggy (still accepted lag not too much) but it was more laggy and crashes more, so I though maybe the rom is bad so I tried another 8.0 same happened.
in conclusion: even custom roms lag (although a lot less than official OTA) but it takes a lot of work for the devs to get rid of extra bloat for the old device to run smoothly. and sometimes even after getting rid of every last bloat it may still cause slowness of the device.
AOSP roms tend to be really easy on the device, so yes even if I had a Z2 I would install android 10.0 on it if it was AOSP because, well, aosp is friendly to old devices (in my own experience).
again thats just my personal opinion, yes your friend's phone has a 7.1.1 on a galaxy 3 but its custom and debloated so you cant compare that to official FW release from samsung
AND true that your friend sees the device as quick and smooth, but tell him to get back to 6.0 or even 5.1 and it will be even faster and consumes less battery.
but again it depends on how he uses the device, some people may tolerate the heavy software and might not even notice a difference in performance, but if you are heavy user like me, heavy gamer and multi task a lot, thats when the software unleashes its true potentials, so for normal easy use its ok but in heavy use, you will notice huge differences.
and to your example, windows updates, they have differet versions of every update, there is Home, pro, ulitmate etc...
so if your PC is old and has old hardware, using windows 10 home will be quite smooth, but if it was ultimate with full functionalities it will lag like hell.
we dont have that in android, again we do have AOSP though which is very easy like a home version yet functions like an ultimate version thats why i love it

Yeah I know there are different versions, even though I said that my old laptop had Win 7 Home at the beginning and now it has Win 10 X64 pro RS4 currently, it's not the point here. Android should follow the same path because just like there are almost an infinite combination of computer hardware assembled in form of laptops/PCs, there are so many Android phones with different hardware into them as well. so like you said, why should every newer version of Android be heavier than the previous one? Is it not because of marketing and thus selling more Android phones?
why a Windows based Laptop/PC from 8 years ago can still run today's Operation system without any problems but an Android phone from 8 years ago can't even boot up!
I mean if Windows were like Android and would get more hungry after every update then a laptop with 4GB RAM from 2010 for example, would surely need more than 16 GB now to run the most recent Windows OS. but fortunately, it doesn't. Windows still manages to run on 4GB and always leaves 2 or 1.5 GB of RAM free for me for other tasks. not to mention that I even play Sims 4 on it ( the graphic card bottlenecks though since it wasn't a gaming laptop in the first place).
my phone has 4GB RAM and soon with newer Android versions Google/manufacturers will make it (intentionally/unintentionally) heavier so that I will need 6 or 8 GB to use my phone smoothly.
Linux fans always boast about how lightweight, updated and bug free their OS is, and while Android is built upon the same Linux platform, but it didn't Inherite any of those features.
About AOSP, I have a phone running on 3GB RAM with Android 5.1, it's not from popular brands like Samsung, Sony etc, is it possible to install Android AOSP on it? ?

search its forum in xda if it exists and there should be roms forum where you can find a veriatey of aosp roms with names (carbon rom, nightlies, ressurection remix) all those are versions of aosp.
yes I agree about that I mean why would a phone need 6gb ram? or 8?? its just a way of marketing so customers think more ram means better phone etc etc (thats what I thought at first) but turns out android does require a lot which makes no sense to me especially coded with linux and unix.
but then again, todays most trendy device is a smartphone so manufactures use us and make more bloat so we'd have to buy newer phones.
as for iphone they have a better plan haha, you see yes iphone update their phones and each phone get the update no matter how old is it, but the case for iphone, they actually set limitations inside the software for previous phones which slows them down so AGAIN youd have to buy the newer iphone to re-enjoy the snappy and quick experience.
im pretty sure google will do the same even with treble support because EVERY manufacture wants us to keep buying and buying.
thats not the case in computers, because computers you can buy their parts individually, which means every piece of hardware in there has to prove it self for you to be convinced to buy it.
but in phones every single flagship for every manufacture comes with the same exact specs in terms of hardware parts (CPU, Ram size),(except camera), its the software that the devices rely on to compete.
and whats worse, SONY the best example, in their XZ2 they have the EXACT camera hardware as our XZP but it takes better pictures, why? because they improved their camera algorythms but wont release it for our device so we would have to upgrade. thats just the way it is I can talk a lot about this topoc non stop xD its just very wide and competetive
but I learned my lesson, for a 1000$ phone wether it was iphone, samsung sony its really not worth it if you think about it, its just trendy, why would people compete about how good is their camera? why would they even concider it as something to brag about? true on the device's screen these small lens cameras look great, put it on a 20" screen you will go like "WTH is this?? its crap!"
these smartphone cameras were made for instant pull and take picture, but now they all compete to become more like DSLR, but will never be as good as DSLR with that size of a lens!
so my lesson is: if you want a good camera with DSLR effect instead of buying a phone of 1000$ go buy a 200$ phone, and a 800$ DSLR camera its a lot better.
why need a 120hz display on a phone? to game? yes because its very easy to play PUBG on a small touch screen? NO its not its pointless!
so yah from now on Id buy a 200$ phone that can get the job done and play games that are playable on a small screen, as for camera and gaming I have a gaming PC and a DSLR there is really no need to pack that into a device that can include all features but will NEVER actually meet our expectations its all about the TREND

Nice to see you have the same view, can't agree with you more xD
It might sound like a noob question, does it matter which aosp rom I install on that phone? are those aosp roms (carbon etc) like windows ISO file to be able to install them (flash them) on every phone?

no no its still based on android haha you still have to find the right one for your hardware.
so like you searched for the XZP forums just do the same for your other phone in xda find its forum and rom section, what is the phone any way?

Get the XZP or XZ1?

Hi,
I am thinking to get a used xzp or an xz1. I don't care much between their sizes but I do care for camera updates/features (and os updates). Which one would you go with?
Thanks!
If you care about software, then go for the XZ1. It has Treble, it has display flash and a new Dialer UI. The camera performance is the same as with the XZ P.
The XZP is a bigger phone and has a 4K HDR display. If you care about that then go XZP.
I think xz1 is appropriate.Xz1 is born with Oreo(8),but Xzp is born with Nougat(7).According to reliable news,Sony smartphone can update two system version,so xz1 can update to Android 10,but xzp can only update to Android 9, despite they have same CPU.
Forgive my grammar mistakes, after all, I'm a senior middle school student in China.

I would never look at that. When the official support is over, you root the phone and install custom Firmware.
I have Xperia V, which was released with 4.0 and got updated to 4.3, I own an Xperia ZR that began its path with 4.1 and ended on 5.0, and today both devices happily run 7.1.2.
You're on XDA DEVELOPERS FORUM, what the hell are you talking about, buying a different device instead of the one you want, because it's going to have 6 months less support?:laugh::laugh:
p.s. never apologize for your English until you're told you're bad at it. Most of the people who speak English are not native to English language anyway. Like myself, and most of the people at this forum.

I agree, most people on the Sony forums on xda has "poor" English. Mostly because Sony phones are more popular in Asia and EU than they are in the US. So the majority of Sony users are not native English speakers.

Get the XZ Premium. I'm a happy XZP user and i would recommed it to anyone looking to upgrade to a good Oreo phone. It might not get the "P" android update but it is a reliable phone, it does take good picture and 2 days battery( 4g/h+ or wifi always on, 2+ hours of music and video streaming per day, social networking, internet browsing, but no games). Only thing i wish it was louder: speakers volume. I never tried the XZ1 but just like you i had to choose betwwen the two and you know what i picked.

100% agreed here go for XZP.. .... thing is OP Youll find almost all phones nowadays are 2 years OS updates, 3 yrs security, including Google due to the fact that alot of people, at one time, tended to change their phones every year..
However, now-a-days in 2017 and more-so now in 2018... more and more people are holding onto their older devices, due to flagships being far too expensive (iPhone X, Galaxy Note 9, Xperia XZ2Prem..etc) and the so-called "Updates and New Flagships" features are so small and incremental.. that the huge prices dont justify these "little" upgrades...
Ive just come back to SONY after a break, with a Pre-owned, yet BNIB XZP... and while the camera is a little quirky and requires some tinkering to get the best out of it (I found using the hardware camera shutter button on the XZP caused camera shake and focus issues on images.. no matter how steady I held it, but pressing the "Virtual" shutter button on screen produced much better results.. )... Its a fantastic device.. still getting 6 weekly - 2 Monthly updates, great screen, Speakers are excellent and much louder now on Oreo than they were under 7 Nougart.. although could be even louder, 3.5mm Jack.. battery life is good..
And we will "eventually", get Android P...

Worth the cost over an XZ1
Hi,
I already got the Xperia xz almost new for 250$ CDN.
The main reason is that xz is dowmgradeable to 6 (for drm keys backup)
Android P is okay but based on what I was reading in the past it was only a possibility for the XZP..
Battery wise Android 6 is way better though but for now I'm enjoying 8.
Thx

Good to hear you got sorted... The xz is a great device, I know it's still being updated like the premium... i don't really go for downgrading or custom ROMs myself though, and the screen is a little on the small side for me...
Enjoy ?
