When will we get Nougat on our xperia XA???, - Sony Xperia XA Questions & Answers

Hey everyone! According to the the Sony update roadmap Sony Xperia XA was supposed to be updated sometime in early 2017 (Jan-March) but it's May now.. I want the update asap Does anyone knows when will we get update????? thank you!

Samsung has already rolled out the Nougat update for Galaxy A5 (2016) users in Russia, it is also important to note that Sammy's version of Android is more customized than Sony's.
So this is how Sony treats consumers who bought their mid-range phones, my next Android phone is going to be either a Pixel or a Samsung one.

Sony is awful with support for mid range phones.Check at this we really are the last ones to get it!

I agree with you. My previous experience with Sony is good actually. I had a Flagship though.. (Xperia Z3). Pixel isn't officially available here in UAE. They are available here unofficially but they would cost me around whopping 800-900$! I won't switch to Samsung because I prefer Stock UI and Sony's UI. I thought of switching to Huawei but they aren't good with the Software updates either. (Security patches..). I would switch to Nokia 6 or 5 whenever its available at my place.

I know right.. According to a 'Leaked' Roadmap we were supposed to get nougat in 'Early 2017' and now almost half of the 2017 has passed away.

Agree with you. This is a big disappointment from Sony. I had a Xperia M2 Aqua and the Lollipop update didn't take so long (like 2 months). Also this phone has a lot of bugs (the battery drain, some xposed modules make crash the phone, apps like YouTube sometimes stop working). My next phone will be a Galaxy, Sony's phone quality decreased the last years.

Scamsung mid-range devices are not better and have some problems too. If you compare XA with S7 or S8 you will make me laugh for hours.

Think you'll find the lollipop update for the m2 took almost 6mths to arrive from it being announced(may) to it actually arriving (beginning of October). The Nougat update for the xa is its final update so don't expect it before the device is at least a year on the market it'll probably arrive in the autumn some time
Sent from my Xperia XA using XDA Labs

Annoyingly they'll probably give us 7.0 and not 7.1, all this delay and still not the very latest version. Though only time will tell-my XA is running flawlessly on MM.

Lesson Learned!
Last Sony device I purchase! Never seen such terrible support and developers. If I had missed deadlines by several months, I would no longer be working where I currently work. Unacceptable!

So XL is not getting 4.3...what a surprise. At least now I know that Sony support on mid-range and low-end devices is crap....the only big thing they did for us was to update to 4.2.2,however this update also have bugs so I don't see any difference between sony official support and custom rom.If someone doesn't start to work on a CM soon we'll be stuck with this 4.2.2 until we can manage to get a new phone....sony mid range phone?never again
Well, wrath of users was expected and even I wanted Sony to give 4.3 or 4.4 update.
But seriously have you even seen a mid-range phone getting more than one android version update? I think the answer is NO.
Sony has still handled Xperia L quite well and we should patiently wait for bug fix update of our latest 4.2.2 build.
And don't lose hope on CM ever, its just a matter of time. Even development of my other awesome phone(HTC Explorer) started after a lot of time and now it has fully working CM10.2. See, the phone was launched with 2.3 and was completely abandoned by HTC but it has one of the best developments for legacy devices. So, don't lose hope and keep calm.
Lol... I'm switching to Google nexus.. Sony can go **** themselves. It's stupid that they're not bothered to release atleast 4.3 when our phone was released just about 6 months ago, just wow.

Well, Nexus does give you freedom and choices of lots of custom roms. It's price is great and it's very good phone. I have Nexus 4 and I do like it. I will certainly recommend it. The only thing you need to think is how long you intend to use it. Buying the every latest devices is not very wise as you spend alot of your money for just one or two extra features.
I think to update my Nexus 7 2013 in 2015 and my Nexus 4 Next year (October 2014) while Xperia L around when it is required. I would be using it for a couple of years too I believe. Following this scheme I always have the latest device with me and I also do not spend a lot of money. (700-800 British Pounds every three year, considering that I am a Medicine Student and under a lot of loan already). Also what is more to look is that my old devices are still doing a great job. I recently installed CM 10.2(JB 4.3) in HTC Sensation and it runs just as smooth as Nexus 4/Xperia L for the matter. The software is stable and I can play HD games on 786MB RAM only.
Another point to note is that KitKat 4.4 has only been released for about a week now and I am using 4.3 on my two year old HTC sensation using Custom ROM.
Now most of manufacturers are working hard on ONLY hardware. Even phones released two years ago are doing very well till date. However, if you look into software department and games, you can still play all of latest games on these devices very smoothly. I will give you examples of HTC sensation/Incredible S, Samsung Nexus, SII or any other phone of that time with almost similar hardware. I have checked MC4/Fifa 14/Asphlat 8 personally on all of these devices. Also with KITKAT 4.4, Android has gone into a surge to speed up system by 50% and that's just beginning.
You might be wondering, the new ROMS are not available. Well actually they are but custom made. If you check out Android development of these phones, you will be surprised that many developers are giving their best to just work hard on new ROMS and they are all great.
The only drawback that I see is of Nexus devices is that it doesnot have a removable battery. This is just a big draw back for me as I keep three devices and I update each one annually so this means that I need to change my nexus after using it for around 2 years to 3 years. In this time, I need to change my battery as battery does get worn out and damaged. But I just can not easily do that although it can be done but usually nexus batteries are hard to find comparatively.
Remember to always BUY A DEVICE WHICH IS DEVELOPERS FRIENDLY. You won't find much ROMS for HTC Amaze although it has almost the same specification as HTC sensation.
About Xperia L, usually a manufacturer updates it devices for around 18 months in high end devices and around the same time for middle ranged devices or maybe 12 months. When will Kitkat be available for Xperia L? It might take a long time (first all new high end devices Z1 and Z ultra, then recent high end devices and then the lower and middle end devices)
I clearly see why there isnot a chance for Xperia L to directly jump to 4.4 or maybe this is what I am hoping to use Xperia L in the long run.

You are right, but XL is 6-7 months old,and if mid-range device get 12 month support this makes 5-6 months support more.I think that is enough time to make 4.3(why not 4.4...) update where all the bugs that are present in 4.2.2 are fixed.
Who knows, maybe we will see bugfree update some day
How my im so suprised ! About that ,..

Buying a phone?
check this out :

I will never buy sony phones if they won't update xperia L to 4.4 kitkat
Bye Sony!
I've got myself an Xp-L and if Sony abandons it in 4.2.2 (which very likely is), I will never buy any Sony phone, ever.
come on people. this is the 'first draft', simply meaning that these will be the first phones which will get the update. i.e sony has prioritized them. they will be working the update for these devices and then come to other phones. and if you are saying like ' i wont buy sony phone ever again' then good luck with other manufacturers mid-range devices.
I said that I won't buy Sony too...but if I think about it...Samsung makes expensive devices, LG is no better than Sony in terms of updates and hardware...and others aren't so trustworthy... So I guess I'll be sticking with Sony until I'll afford a high end device. Then I'll really have a choice.

What do you need from 4.3 or 4.4 ?
I have seen a lot of complaints here "when we will get 4.3 or 4.4) and so on and so on. My question to all of you whiners out there is as following, what do you need 4.4 or 4.3 for ? Is there something in this version that you ppl need or is it just need to have latest version of OS so that you can brag about or what ?
I uppgrade ONLY when there is a bugfix or something that I actually NEED. If it says 4.1 or 15.2 on my android has no point whatsoever in my world. What is imprtant that my does what is designed to do and Xperia XL even with 4.1 is just fine. Stop whining and actually use that phone for waht is intended for.

My Thoughts on XPERIA L updates

Hello Guys, Many of us complian about we dont know any Informations yet about an Android 4.3 update.
Today i looked on PTCRB (still nothing new) ,but i looked up the PTCRB page about the XPERIA U (predecessor of the XPERIA L). And it got tons of Certified updates (Most of them are Minor Updates but there are two Major Updates listed) , so i think we should get more than these 6 Updates
I Have attached an Image about the 2 PTCRB Pages
What do you think about my thoughts let me know !

The updates are pretty poor and communication from Sony is awful. Why they choose to update Xperia M (underspec'd compared to the L) is beyond me. But then again, they released 4.4 ASOP for L. Maybe if they release a fully functional generic 4.4 ASOP that would heal the wound

I would be happy with 4.4 ASOP without any Sony Junk if Sony can't be bothered to release 4.3
It's not great customer service and it means a very good phone won't become updated and I won't buy Sony again. If they plan to update say so, if it's end of life. Say so.
I have a feeling they will do nothing, wait till 18 months support period has expired then drop it.

Actually I am almost sure for two things:
Sorry won't release anything more for that expensive brick, because it looks for me that there is more hardware issues and maybe lack of drivers from Qualcomm. Also keep in mind crappy cameras (both of them are awful), totally bad touchscreen and most awful brand - they became more "stay away brand" than chinese ZTE and Huawei brands, which these days here are considered as OK here ...
Personally my Xperia L would not survive to the end of warranty - either it will be sold on half of it's price or will be killed - today it flied ~6 times to the floor, because 9 times sound got routed to earpiece instead of speaker.
Generally this Sony are scammers these days and should not be trusted for anything. Btw this was my last product from Sony - they are gone in my blacklist like HP and Nokia.... got very bad experience with these brands and will never come back to them.

Okay at the Moment i have no issues with the camera and the Touchscreen maybe i have chosen a good modell of the L, but you are right if Sony wouldnt make updates fort this phone they would become a stay away brand and at the moment Sony must work harder on Updates because they have not much money at the time and that is the Problem of Sony they release too much phones and gave no Updates other brands like Samsung gave the S2 4.1 and at this time the s2 was 2 years old and the arc s Sonys Flagship at the Time never saw 4.1
PS I really like Sony they made good and Products but Support on the Phones they make is really bad
I'll explain you some facts!
If you look at xperia U and Xperia L, they both were updated for about a year. The number of updates for xperia U only means, developers were lazy to fix bugs so they had to push more small patches to fix the bugs!
If you still want to question, xperia L has a month left in comparison to xperia U, I'll like you not to overlook x.x.x.17 update which isn't mentioned in the image!
About xperia M got 4.3 and not xperia L, the reason is that xperia M was released few months after xperia L; thus the support for one year meant, it had to be updated till 4.3 but xperia L had completed its one year when the time to update lower end devices came!
If you are wondering, if we would get 4.4 or 4.3 , it is highly UNLIKELY! Don't put your hopes too high!
The reason why source for 4.4 was released, it was only to shut mouth of xperia L owners so it could seem, Sony is working on 4.4 for xperia L and in the mean time, the time frame of one year of update could pass! 4.4 was supposingly in works for xperia L until, Sony decided to ditch it and released buggy 4.4 so it could work on new devices which were released by Sony like M2, T3 etc.
I hope this enlightenment would be enough for you all!

The problem, in my opinion, is that there are tons of people which cannot unlock their bootloader (like me) due to carrier restrictions. We are stuck with stock pretty much forever. And it sucks.

True ****in story. I spent a ****load of money on this rock and now i cant even flash a custom decent rom, not to talk about the ****tiest stock kernel i've seen in a phone. **** you Sony, **** you carriers and **** you overpriced phones. I bough this for 200 euros and my carrier is asking me 50 more to unlock the carrier status so that i could be able to go to sony and unlock the bootloader. Tell me if this isnt a joke! And remember, its not 250 bucks, its 250 euros, about 340 bucks! WTF???
With this ammount of money i should have bought a nexus 5 and i wouldnt have to care about this problems. never buying a phone in my country again.
Good luck for you guys and i wish the best to all unlocked bootloader. Im seriously thinking about selling my phone if i dont get a proper update.
If sony can afford making phones, they should also be able to give them proper technical support...

Yeha but they all are based on Stock and Stock is not that good
I dont say the roms based on Stock are bad but the Stock 4.2.2 is too buggy
Today's answer from Sorry mobile Bulgaria
Boys and girls (of course!)
Today I have contacted Sorry mobile Bulgaria regarding bug fixing update (I did not pretend for 4.3 or 4.4 - just a bug fixing update, whatever version of Android they want to release) and there was short answer - There is no known date from Sony mobile for update of Xperia L, and there is no known update to come. Rest of message was their usual "Sorry for you troubles, please repair via SUS" and other blah-blah stuff.
Whole Question and answer is in txt file in attachment. If you want to know whole question and answer - feel free to use Google/Bing translate services from Bulgarian....

If they produce 3 phones in year and focus on their support for a longer time than release date + 3 months, probably they would get more users, respect from them and of course - more profit. With their policy to release bunch of garbage every month, they won't get any new customers and they are already on path to lose their old customers. I am personally one of big count of users which will never come back to SoRRy - there is simple explanation: New Xperia L on store are sold for 345BGN without contract, Xperia L sold on second hand sites with ~1 year and more warranty left is sold at 180-200BGN. My 4 years old HTC Desire on same second hand sites costs 100-180BGN depending on how it looks. BGN - stands fro New Bulgarian Leva (I am Bulgarian).

Sony's commitment to firmware updates?

I am considering getting an XZ (deciding between it and HTC 10) and would like to know the track record of Sony's commitment to firmware updates? It seems that the phone has been updated to the November security patch. Does it happen monthly like the Nexus and Blackberry, or it's more sporadic (once every few months) like the Huawei. I know that this phone is very new and may not have a lot of updates yet but if anyone is familiar with the Sony's track record, please let me know about it. Thank you in advance.
Sony track record for updates is not great. Usually toward the back of the list for Android version updates but fairly good for incremental improvement updates within the same Android version. Security patches quarterly at best.

I think Sony is doing pretty well with the updates... They are not the fastest but yes they support their flagships for 18-24 months
long life with so many updates are waiting us, it's gonna take some time, but the updates will continue more than other companies take my last Xperia Z as an example ))
Sometimes they can drag there feet a bit, but otherwise one of the best oems regarding OS updates I think especially just recently.
Pretty sure all xperia flagship devices are usually around 2yrs, and all midrange xperia devices are 18mths.

The big wait for updates on Xperia phones confuses me.
Everyone was dying for the big update to hit their Z3 / Z3c and then POW, battery became far, far worse.
Not sure what the up side is to most android version updates on Xperia.
Rare exception to this was the really great improvement to the Z4/Z3+ regarding heat and battery drain.
You typically get a couple of years and a couple of major Android upgrades on Sony flagships, so that's the good news. The bad news is that they do sometimes withhold newer software features to newer models, and that security patches take a good while to come. (And even once available within Sony, can take a good 2-3 months to be released across most regions.)

Get the XZP or XZ1?

Hi,
I am thinking to get a used xzp or an xz1. I don't care much between their sizes but I do care for camera updates/features (and os updates). Which one would you go with?
Thanks!
If you care about software, then go for the XZ1. It has Treble, it has display flash and a new Dialer UI. The camera performance is the same as with the XZ P.
The XZP is a bigger phone and has a 4K HDR display. If you care about that then go XZP.
I think xz1 is appropriate.Xz1 is born with Oreo(8),but Xzp is born with Nougat(7).According to reliable news,Sony smartphone can update two system version,so xz1 can update to Android 10,but xzp can only update to Android 9, despite they have same CPU.
Forgive my grammar mistakes, after all, I'm a senior middle school student in China.

I would never look at that. When the official support is over, you root the phone and install custom Firmware.
I have Xperia V, which was released with 4.0 and got updated to 4.3, I own an Xperia ZR that began its path with 4.1 and ended on 5.0, and today both devices happily run 7.1.2.
You're on XDA DEVELOPERS FORUM, what the hell are you talking about, buying a different device instead of the one you want, because it's going to have 6 months less support?:laugh::laugh:
p.s. never apologize for your English until you're told you're bad at it. Most of the people who speak English are not native to English language anyway. Like myself, and most of the people at this forum.

I agree, most people on the Sony forums on xda has "poor" English. Mostly because Sony phones are more popular in Asia and EU than they are in the US. So the majority of Sony users are not native English speakers.

Get the XZ Premium. I'm a happy XZP user and i would recommed it to anyone looking to upgrade to a good Oreo phone. It might not get the "P" android update but it is a reliable phone, it does take good picture and 2 days battery( 4g/h+ or wifi always on, 2+ hours of music and video streaming per day, social networking, internet browsing, but no games). Only thing i wish it was louder: speakers volume. I never tried the XZ1 but just like you i had to choose betwwen the two and you know what i picked.

100% agreed here go for XZP.. .... thing is OP Youll find almost all phones nowadays are 2 years OS updates, 3 yrs security, including Google due to the fact that alot of people, at one time, tended to change their phones every year..
However, now-a-days in 2017 and more-so now in 2018... more and more people are holding onto their older devices, due to flagships being far too expensive (iPhone X, Galaxy Note 9, Xperia XZ2Prem..etc) and the so-called "Updates and New Flagships" features are so small and incremental.. that the huge prices dont justify these "little" upgrades...
Ive just come back to SONY after a break, with a Pre-owned, yet BNIB XZP... and while the camera is a little quirky and requires some tinkering to get the best out of it (I found using the hardware camera shutter button on the XZP caused camera shake and focus issues on images.. no matter how steady I held it, but pressing the "Virtual" shutter button on screen produced much better results.. )... Its a fantastic device.. still getting 6 weekly - 2 Monthly updates, great screen, Speakers are excellent and much louder now on Oreo than they were under 7 Nougart.. although could be even louder, 3.5mm Jack.. battery life is good..
And we will "eventually", get Android P...

Worth the cost over an XZ1
Hi,
I already got the Xperia xz almost new for 250$ CDN.
The main reason is that xz is dowmgradeable to 6 (for drm keys backup)
Android P is okay but based on what I was reading in the past it was only a possibility for the XZP..
Battery wise Android 6 is way better though but for now I'm enjoying 8.
Thx

Good to hear you got sorted... The xz is a great device, I know it's still being updated like the premium... i don't really go for downgrading or custom ROMs myself though, and the screen is a little on the small side for me...
Enjoy ?

Xperia 5 II - Any credible sources on promised software updates?

I'm considering to buy Xperia 5 ii on sale as successor to my OnePlus 6, but want to know how many software updates, major/ Android versions and security, Sony promises. If it's equal or worse to what OnePlus does these days, I'm not buying Sony. Then I rather get Samsung I think.
I can't find any other sources for this informations than a japanese news site, quoted/ covered by gsmarena and others.

Anyone have a credible source on what Sony promises in regards to software/ firmware updates for Sony Xperia 5 ii?
Something like this, just for Sony, would be nice.

Found nothing relevant in Sony press releases.

I can't really give you an official source but as an unofficial source (eg. Owner of Xperia 5 II) then I've been impressed with the regularity of updates .
They seem to follow the standard Android security update frequency pretty closely.

That counts for something at least. Thanks for the insight.
I think Google minimum requirements is 2 years major, 3 years security. Samsung peomises 3 years major and 5 years security for all Galaxy phones. Would be great if Sony promised the same for their phones, at least the premium ones.
I still have my OnePlus 6 in almost mint condition, the Evutec aramid case is doing a great job protecting it (and so am I). Keeping a phone for at least three years is not that unlikely. Or 2.5 years, as I'll be buying into Xperia 5 II at >0.5 years late.
I contacted Sony support about this, and just received an answer.
Dear Olav,
Thank you for your email.
Your case number is: 22xxxxxx.
I am glad to hear that you are interested in our Xperia 5 II.
Unfortunately we do not have any information that we can share with you regarding future software updates.
I wish a had a more concrete answer to your question, however this is not information we have available or are able to procure.
Please do not hesitate to contact us again, should you need any further assistance. I wish you a pleasant day.
Med vennlig hilsen,
Xxxxx

Don't know if I'm willing to risk getting disappointed then.
Now OnePlus also have promised to keep their flagship phones updated longer than Android minimum, with 3 years OS and 4 years security.

Where you at Sony?
The latest Sony flagship phones had received two major updates I believe, which indicates that 5ii would receive Android 12 and nothing more. I saw a rumor that updates would be extended to three major updates but have not seen anything official.
A little sad.
Sony officially supports AOSP. So even if you won't get OTA updates after 2 years, you will be able to build and install much newer Android version for a few years. Although you will probably lose "proprietary" features like audio/video enhancement or photo pro.
