Does anyone who has this phone, use it on AT&T?
If so, does the VoLTE work? Meaning, when you make a call, does it do HD Calling? When on the call, does your cellular drop from LTE to HSPA?
I had to return my OP5T because it didn't support VoLTE, HD Calling, Wifi Calling, etc... Tried different SIM cards and IEMI's and nothing worked.
I mean, the phone worked, I could make calls and stuff, but it was like stepping back to 2012 where you couldn't do Voice and Data at the same time. The call quality was standard instead of high quality, and you couldn't keep your LTE signal while on a call, so if you were tethering at the time, it was like being on dial up.
Has this been addressed with the OP6, or is this still a limitation?
I have an Essential that I did not purchase through ATT, got it from Amazon Prime on sale for $399, and it supports VoLTE and HD Calling perfectly.

That would be awesome. With the 5T, I assumed that because the SIM card came right out of a phone that was provisioned for those things that it would just work, but it didn't. I tried calling customer service and had them try an IMEI from another phone that I owned, my backup phone that I know those services worked with, and it was no good.
Really hoping that the OP6 works with AT&T. Those two missing features are kinda important. If I can't tether my laptop from time to time and use it for work while on the phone... I can just do one or the other... be on the phone, or tether. then its a deal killer for me, which sucks because the OP phones really are amazing...
Oh well, maybe there is a PH-2 soon and that will give me some of the new specs and tech and still do all the things it needs to..
Def keep me posted. If the OP6 works for you I am ordering one the second I get confirmation. haha

I'll be honest with you, I'm not very optimistic. I have an unlocked S8 currently and I can't get VoLTE or HD calling. I also have an unlocked Moto X Pure and that has the same problem. I think it's AT&T that requires you have one of their phones to get those services. I'm hoping I'm wrong but my phone is due in tomorrow, I'll let you know.
To use VOLTE with ATT you normally have to be on their rom as VOLTE.
To experience HD Voice, both calling parties must:
Be within an AT&T HD Voice coverage area.
Both caller and receiver need to use an AT&T HD Voice-capable smartphone.
Have AT&T wireless service provisioned for AT&T HD Voice.
Insert the AT&T HD Voice SIM card that came with your device.

I'm gonna say it won't work on ATT, the only bring your own device that works with it on ATT is iPhones, but VoLTE and VoWiFi work on T-Mobile with the OP6

With Android 8.1, the Pixel 2 joined a short list of non-ATT-branded phones that work with ATT's VoLTE. I caved and bought the Note 8 in November coming from the Nexus 6P. Only for this to happen. I've been trying to see if the VoLTE is a software improvement in 8.1 or if this is strictly limited to the Pixel. I've not seen anything definitive yet.

Well, I had my Moto X Pure on Verizon and it had VoLTE but when I switched to AT&T that option disappeared. I called them and asked them why that was and after 7 different people from 7 different countries, I was finally told it has to be AT&T phone. I'm sure there is some work around somewhere but we'll have to figure that out. I kind of remember something in the MXP forums about a work around, I'll see if I can find it this weekend.
I got my OP6. Out of the box Volte does not work. I rooted with Magisk and with a Volte enabler module I have HD voice/Volte working.
The module also adds settings for wifi calling, but that needs more than build prop edits to work.

So a couple questions...
1) It says HD Calling, but more importantly, when you make a call, your cellular service stays on LTE, and doesn't drop to 3G or HSPA+?
2) How hard was it to root? Have not rooted in years, haven't felt the need, but maybe now that will change.
3) If you root, does that impact your ability to take OTA's and other OnePlus updates? I assume you rooted the stock ROM?

3. If you're rooted it will detect it and automatically download althea full update instead of an incremental update. Oneplus is very root friendly

Ah, so you just have to re-root each time? And you need root to enable VoLTE? It can't be done without root, at the diagnostic level, where you type in the code to the dialer to get into the hidden settings like some other phones do?

Yeah easy. The thread I linked has the steps. Basically need an unlocked bootloader and working Fastboot setup. I would recommend reading that thread, or you can wait until twrp is released and that would be a little more straightforward process. Plus you would be able to make a backup in case anything goes wrong.
Either way feel free to reach out if you have issues
Sorry but if volte works with a people module why wouldn't it work straight out of the box?
Its like enabling something the phone is capable of?
The module is just a build.prop tweak...

UPDATE: Droid Life confirms unlocked Pixel works on Verizon. :good:
I just wanted some clarification on this.
I've been getting some conflicting information around this question, so I wanted to post it here in case anyone knows.
Can the unlocked Pixel purchased from the Google Store be used on Verizon?
I bought the 5X and 6P unlocked from the Google Store and have used them both on Project Fi and Verizon. I just wanted to know if I could do the same with the Pixel.
Thanks and sorry if this has been explained clearly elsewhere.

Yes. It is compatible with CDMA and all of Verizon's LTE bands, and the description in the Google store says it's compatible with all major US carriers. However, you won't be able to use features that require Verizon software like wifi calling and VoLTE. Personally, I don't care about those things. I'm on Verizon and I'm seriously considering buying from the Google store.
You'll need an activated Verizon nano SIM card though.

I'm not sure that's true. For example, my unlocked Nexus 6 purchased from Motorola is able to use VoLTE. I don't have wifi calling, but I don't think Nexus 6 has wifi calling at all for Verizon, as it doesn't show up as a supported device: https://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/wificalling/

Good question. I suspect the answer is you'll be able to use it, the question is just how degraded the experience will be. When the Nexus 6 launched there were several problems with using the unlocked version:
The bring-your-own-device discount did not show up for unlocked Nexus 6, only Verizon-purchased Nexus 6
It was extremely difficult to activate a new SIM on the phone
They did eventually reinstate the discount after many people filed complaints with the FCC.
I didn't follow the 6P/5X launch very closely... how did those work on Verizon? That might give a better clue than the Nexus 6 launch since it's more recent.

Pardon me, I'm from Canada where we haven't had any CDMA for years. Aren't Sprint and Verizon CDMA whole at&t and T-Mobile are GSM? How would one phone work across all the networks? And, at least last time we had CDMA up here, you didn't use a SIM card with it. Has that changed? Just curious, it doesn't affect me at all.

I wouldn't call paying $300/year extra "fine". You might want to look into it, I believe you have to request the discount. It's been a while since I dealt with this though.

Hey dude... I recently switched over to Verizon, and have had a 6P since launch last year. Was wondering, what exactly is voLTE, is there something special that has to be done to make it work, and do you know IF there is any way to get wifi calling to work? I do tend to need it since at times I don't get good reception...
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
voLTE is just voice over LTE which you already have which basically means voice and data simultaneously. And no WiFi calling calling available on Verizon. At least not to my knowledge anyway [emoji106]

Just to add...
My son's 6p works great on Verizon. He has VoLTE and get's the non contract discount. Never had a problem with it. I had the original Google Play store Nexus 6 and ran into problems initially. But like someone else stated, everything is fine now. I even bought an unlocked one not too long ago and had no issues with it. I don't think we will have any problems with the Pixels.

I also want to confirm that with the Nexus 5X from Google (rooted and custom ROM) works flawlessly on Verizon and I get the $25/mo access discount on the line. VoLTE works great. I just select the Enhanced 4G LTE Mode under Cellular networks menu on the settings.

VoLTE is Voice over LTE. It means voice calls are transmitted over the new LTE network instead of the legacy CDMA network (or GSM in the case of carriers besides Verizon/Sprint).
It's important because if your phone has only a half-duplex modem, as most recent CDMA phones starting around the time of Droid Turbo and Nexus 6 do, you can't conduct a voice call (circuit switched) and have an LTE data connection (packet switched) at the same time. (Interestingly GSM carriers can do a GSM voice stream and LTE data stream at the same time with a half-duplex modem since there's a standard for doing that, but it's not possible with CDMA and LTE without a more expensive full-duplex modem.)
How can you tell if VoLTE is working for you? Turn off wifi for the purpose of the test, if you're connected to a wifi network (you're testing whether you can do data over the cell network, not wifi, while a call is ongoing). Verify the "LTE" logo shows up next to the cell signal strength indicator. Place a voice call. If the "LTE" logo disappears while the voice call is ongoing, you don't have VoLTE. If it remains, you're good. Most importantly, try using data e.g. web browser over cellular data while on a voice call.
What if the VoLTE test doesn't work? On your My Verizon account, go to My Plan & Services -> Manage Products & Apps , and make sure "HD Voice" (they used to call it Advanced Calling) is enabled. On your Nexus Settings, go to Wireless & Networks -> More -> Cellular Networks, and turn on "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" if it isn't already. Note that turning on HD Voice on your Verizon account requires you to switch to either Basic or Premium Visual Voicemail -- the old fashioned voice mail doesn't work with it.
What's the difference between VoLTE and HD Voice? VoLTE is about the connection from your phone to the Verizon tower, and it applies no matter whom you are calling; it enables simultaneous voice and data. HD Voice is a high-bandwidth codec for much better sounding voice calls, but the other end has to support it too, so it only works if you have VoLTE (HD Voice over non-LTE is theoretically possible but Verizon doesn't support it) AND if the person you are calling supports HD Voice too (e.g. another recent Nexus or iPhone that's correctly configured). You can tell if HD Voice is working because the "HD" icon will appear in the dialer AFTER THE OTHER PERSON PICKS UP THE CALL, but you won't even need to look for the icon because the call will sound so vastly better that it will be obvious.
What about Wifi calling on Verizon? They actually DO support it, but not on Nexus devices. Here is their FAQ and list of supported devices, which does not include Nexus 6/6P. I have personally seen it working on a Verizon iPhone so I know they have it. And, according to this, the Pixel will support wifi calling on Verizon!

The Pixel, along with many "international" phones, supports both CDMA and GSM networks. And yes, CDMA carriers like Verizon started using SIM cards several years ago. I think it's necessary in order to offer LTE compatibility, but I don't know the details.

LTE is GSM based at it's core, so basically yes LTE is the reason for CDMA carriers adding sim cards.
CDMA will eventually disappear completely as VOLTE replaces 2g and 3g for both voice and data transmission.
Wi-Fi calling is the only question, but even if it requires some proprietary VZW bull, an unlocked bootloader should let us flash their image if it ended up being necessary, but that's a last resort I don't expect to face...
Hello all, I just activated my Samsung S8+ on Xfinity Mobile this past Tuesday and I still have not received the May security update. So you can use data while on a call WITHOUT WiFi being on? Mine shows 3G all the time with WiFi off. I was thinking it was a SIM compatibility issue between the LG X Power and S8+. My SIM from my Note5 wouldn't work in my S8+ on Sprint. Had to have a different one.

It's set to global. I have trouble getting LTE period. I can use Rom Control and force to LTE and web is OK. No calls though. Toggle is missing. Same thing, I can enable VoLTE with Rom Control and can see the toggle. NO voice calls though. Says out of service area. Maybe it's because the LG X Power doesn't support VoLTE and the account isn't provisioned for it. I put the SIM card back in the X Power and I can't get 4G on there now. A tier 2 tech was poking around my account yesterday. Don't know what he did. He hung up on my. LOL

APN settings appear correct. Compared that with the LG. My LG has a username and password though. I take them out and I have no data at all. The S8+ has data with the settings like yours. I can edit the APN settings on the LG where as they are locked on the S8+. Weird since this is an unlocked U1 phone. Had to flash the Xfinity firmware to get text to work though. Hopefully that didn't lock the device to Xfinity. The tier 2 tech wanted the IMEI from there S8+. I gave it to him and he said that was for the LG X Power. I just flashed the U1 firmware to my Xfinity device and all the APN stuff is editable. Phone shows as a U1 model too. Everything is working great. I found everytjing in thr AT&T section of S8+.
Can you flash back to U1 firmware, pop the X mobile sim in (get the device all set up first before putting SIM in) and then do a manual search on service provider section of mobile connections? The tech may have locked that SIM to IMEI, but that's a good thing if you are wanting to use that SIM on S8, right?
Go in to network operators and pick top option (search networks) and let it search for a while. Then you should have a list like my second attachment. Oh and don't mind my lack of cell signal lol, I was jacking around with all of the editable options available now.
Be sure and set Bearer to Unspecified (with nothing else selected). Save before exiting. Added third pic to show I am on LTE+ on U1 firmware with X mobile SIM, but this SIM was always tied to this IMEI as it is Xfinity Purchased phone.

I went through most of that when it was on U1. Got data and and calling. Just couldn't send texts. Is VoLTE working with the U1 firmware for you?
Nope, trying to see if I can "activate" my phone but of course Xfinity Mobile activation site is down right now lol.

Going to mess with it more this weekend after work. Ran out of time to keep playing/researching. Flashed back to X Mobile firmware and everything functioning 100%.

Did you ever get this going? I never did get 4G going on my LG X Power. The only way I could get it to work was to select LTE/GSM under mobile networks. Of course calls wouldn't work then. Exchanged them for the LG X Charge which supports VoLTE. I still can't get 4G. They said to use my old sim cards. I think I have a provisioning issue. Still waiting on tier 2 to call.

I've been combing the forums and I haven't been able to find an answer to my question, sorry if it's been posted before and I didn't see it.
So I'm making the switch from a Verizon Galaxy S8+ to an AT&T Note 8. I know Verizon blocked a bunch of Samsung features and I wanted to know if they're available on the AT&T variant? My Note 8 won't be delivered until 10/18 so I'm just preparing myself. Lol
Features I really want:
-Smart Call (I know this is deactivated on almost every carrier)
-Samsung Cloud
-Device Maintenance
Does the AT&T dialer have the nearby places feature? I haven't been able to tell from any videos I've found and I haven't been able to go into a carrier store to see a demo unit.
I was able to get all of these features on my Verizon S8+ by flashing the regular U1 software, but I lost all of the Verizon features I needed (Visual Voicemail, WiFi Calling, and carrier billing for Play Store). So i'm wondering if it would be worth it for the Note 8? Or are the features I'm inquiring about enabled on the AT&T variant?
I saw some people were saying they were having LTE and WiFi calling issues with unlocked devices on AT&T so I'm a little weary of flashing the unlocked version onto it.
Thanks in advance!
Samsung Cloud and device maintenance are both on AT&T.
Not sure what smart call is.

Awesome! 2 out of 3 features is good.
Basically just the Caller ID feature built-in by Samsung. I doubt it would make the cut as carriers usually charge for it as a premium service and they don't want Samsung to provide it for free.
It also adds a "Places" section in the stock dialer. I know that specific feature was also available in the T-Mobile S8+ when i had it briefly, but for some reason was removed by Verizon.

Awesome. So it has the feature, it's just probably stripped down. Probably can be activated by flashing the unlocked software on it down the road.
Thanks for checking!
Smart Call feature is not available on the AT&T Note 8.
Looks cool too.

That's what i think i'm going to do. And i didn't realize exactly how much bloatware is on the AT&T version so i'll be flashing the unlocked version on it today.
Did you flash the regular, unbranded one or the AT&T version? Which features did you lose?

I flashed the regular, unbranded version. Only thing I noticed I lost was Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE which I can live with. Didn't realized there was an Unlocked AT&T version of the firmware, might give that a go but I've got my phone set up perfect enough that I might be too lazy to do that hahhaha.

I have the same crap coverage in my house too. So i use Wi-Fi Calling all the time. There is the AT&T Call Protect app that in essence does the exact same thing as the Smart Call (I'm using that too)

True, I saw that's it's powered by Hiya, which is the same app for the smart call. Mine just doesn't seem to be working. I've gotten 3 spam calls already and that app hasn't shown anything. AT&T should just let that service go and use the built in Smart Call lol
For now, I just installed the actual Hiya app so i can get a popup along with the call to see who's calling. Gonna just flash the AT&T version of the unlocked software!
Yeah, AT&T's Call Protect never worked for me either.
Where can i find the unlocked att firmware?
Call protect is working for me. The other day I had a random number call and it labeled it as a telemarketer right by the number. From there you can block the number from ever calling again and additionally it is automatically setup to block potential fraud calls.
AT&T Call Protect has been working for me too, I have been getting a ton of calls and it always labels them as potential fraud and auto blocks it and i also get them labeled as telemarketer a lot.
Does the O+6 Support VOLTE?
aparently the 5T supported it but it never gave me the option to enable it.
my P20 automatically has it enabled and is shows in the notification as VOLTE

The OP6 does support VoLTE.
I think you may not be getting it earlier because the carrier didn't support it.

5T didn't support it aside from very few networks. In Europe for example, it didn't work at all. If OP6 stays the same, it's not good.

Hard to say. I chatted with Oneplus support about the lack of Volte on the 5T for my network (although the network has it enabled) and they weren't much help at that time.

There was a build.prop tweak that enabled it in settings but toggling it didn't do anything for me.
Guess we'll have to wait and see
P20 pro has it enabled by default
I can't imagine going back after volte

There are surprisingly many phones that support VOLTE out of the box (including some cheap Xiaomi) so it's hard to understand why OnePlus can't get this sorted.
My OnePlus 6 has both VoLTE and VoWiFi in the settings, I just turned both features on. I have both a T-Mobile and ATT (via FreedomPOP) SIM card installed on the phone, T-Mobile is my primary carrier.

Here you go... This is on my OnePlus 6, with my primary SIM (SIM 1) running on T-Mobile US. My second SIM is on FreedomPop (ATT MVNO) and only has 200mb of data, so it's more just in case of emergency. Let me know if you need anything else.
Now we just need know if RCS Universal Profile will be supported. Sadly it's not rolled out on T-Mobile ( hopefully by the end of next month though) so no way to test it on there but, it would be nice if someone on a carrier that already has it turned on could confirm with us that it's working on the OnePlus 6 or not.

thank you for that, i just purchased a op6 i should have mid next week, i will decide then which to keep, p20 pro or op6
how is the camera on the op6?
i miss the speed and stock feel of oneplus, also ok google doesnt work on my p20 pro - i think its a global issue with huawei.
the only thing p20 pro has going for it is its camera. everything else is sub-par, two year old soc, bloated emui, un-needed services, huawei breaking googles apis in favor of its own, etc etc.
i can see huawei creating its own OS to try and compete with android in the not too distant future, thats where ill draw the line.
theybe already made it hard enough for developers.

I don't have much to compare it too, as I was using a OnePlus 2 before this, and my backup phone was a Nexus 5. Plus, I take pictures on a Canon 6D when I'm out taking photos. But from the little I've played with it so far, it seems reallyy good! I'm sure it's not P20 Pro good, but that's to be expected, and from the sound of it, the shortcomings of the P20 Pro in every other aspect sound like it's not really worth it. I have the 8GB + 128GB Mirror Black, and this thing is ridiculously fast. I've taken a few photos with my favorite camera app (Manual Camera - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.vipek.camera2&hl=en_US) and so far they've come out really nice.

I've never owned a OP phone, but I really want to buy one, always used HTC phones. Would really like the phone to be able to get VOLTE. I know the OP5T couldn't get VOLTE in Australia, so hoping that changes with this phone
My OnePlus 5 had VoLTE, worked flawlessly on T-Mobile.

If you don't mind, can you pull out the TMo SIM and just use the ATT one, and make a call and see if it says "HD Call" in the dialer, and while *on the call*, does the cellular service stay on LTE or does it change to HSPA until the call ends?
That will tell us if they sorted out the VoLTE issue with ATT that the OP5T had...
VoLTE was enabled automatically on my phone as I set it up. On Norwegian bands, so it definitely works in Europe now. Phone calls sound great!
Yeah, the phone obviously supports it, and it is up to the carrier to provision it, or not.
In the US, AT&T would not provision VoLTE to the OP5T. So if you are someone that pays for a tethering plan and needs to do that from time to time, you can tether on LTE, but as soon as you make a phone call your cell service drops to HSPA(3G) and it's like being on dial up. So you can tether, or you can make a call, but you can't really do both at the same time effectively.
I am hoping this isn't an issue with the OP6, else I can't use that phone...

I tried, but the issue is that I don't think I get "HD Call" at all being as my second SIM isn't straight ATT, it's FreedomPop (ATT MVNO), so I didn't see the HD Call while on the call via that SIM card (I removed the T-Mobile SIM and put it in my old OnePlus 2 to place the test call between them).
However, while on the call I ran a speed test and got the below results:
Than I re-ran the speed test, while NOT on a call, and here are the results:

Bear with me as I'm no expert and I need to explain what happened.
I have an op6 running Android 9.0.2 rooted with magisk only. Tried all the tricks, installed magisk voenabler, did the numeric codes to condition the phone (*#800# and *#*#4636#*#*) but never got volte to work with att in us. Last week going on a cruise I was having issues with my phone not opening the login page for the ship's wifi (this is another bug on Android 9 because before update I didn't have this issue) so I decided to install the magisk Google dns repo to see if it will fix the issue and it did (the login page). And my volte it's working ever since too. It's being half a day since I'm back and I have rebooted the phone and run speed tests and is working fine. Can anybody with att confirm this to know if this could be a fix or a fluke?
Tried the module, unfortunately it disabled the 2nd sim which is my AT&T one
I'll be able to test VoLTE on At&T via red pocket and see if the MVNO has it later in the month, but I can confirm that when I was using the OP6 on verizon VoLTE was fully working. I was also on 9.0.2 PIE and I didn't need to do anything special to get it to work.
My understanding is your account needs to have VOLTE on it, or else it does not work.

I've had VoLTE on AT&T enabled since the beginning. It's an option in xXx's ROM and works great.
Just because the rom has options for volte doesn't mean it will work for everyone. You carrier itself needs to support volte as well. And lots of carrier make you pay extra for it.

Actually it's about him wondering if it works you should read the op first and like I said just cause it's supported doesn't mean you automatically get it your not paying extra will that's good for you but there are others that do I actually answered his questions with useful information. What exactly are you doing here other than trying to pick arguments with people.
I'm also on att, not sure what you did wrong there, but i used the voenabler module and it works, have you tried switching your sims and see?
Is it contract or prepaid? I heard people say that prepaid sim won't get volte.
Not working

Thanks for your input Tyler, in other words we can confirm that it's att issues because the only thing different that I did from you was using my phone during our stop in Puerto Rico (for those who doesn't know PR is considered us soil so we we can use our phones with no extra charge, it's like calling to another state). I thought I would loose it as soon as I would arrive State side but I still have the service. So something got updated in att when I turned on my phone and used the network from PR that enabled it.
