Android Q will be the last official update for OP6 ? - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

Since OP6 is launching with oreo on board and Android P beta is already available for OP6 does that mean that the next major android version will be the last update for the OP6 as OEM like to follow 2 major upgrades for their flagships ?

Maybe because OnePlus 3 was launched with marshmallow and last major update was oreo so it could be but OnePlus 6 will support Project Treble so don't know for sure but I think it'll recieve more updates.

What about S, T etc.? Or am I missing something?

I think that support for a phone depends on its popularity, the manufacturers do not follow strict guidelines, I mean, they respect their promises but they may extend support if a product is very popular and has a very large user base. And I predict that the OP6 will be very popular because it doesn't have obvious shortcomings, it looks to be ticking all the essential boxes.

My question was especially if there are plans after Android R or if Google already mentioned something that it will stop. I thought I maybe missed something (also looking at Fuchsia).

I don't get why people worry SO much about what versions of android a device will get as long as it gets solid security updates for at least a year after release. If the phone is very good already, would it be such torture to keep living with it the way it is? Don't think so.

It wouldn't be torture, but it would be nice to think you can use the phone for a few years and be running the latest and greatest software on it, without the need for upgrading the phone to the newest model.

So, the phone is just released and we're already talking about his its end of support?

if not there will always be project trebble roms for it .

Here's the official Software Support outline from OnePlus
https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/oneplus-software-maintenance-schedule.862347/

So two years means Android Q for sure but maybe not Android R .
One Plus 6 was released in about April 2018, Pie comes out is released in September
April 2019 One Plus 7??? then Android Q in about September.
The One Plus 6 would be about a year and a half old.
April 2020 One Plus 8 ???? then Android R in September but then the One Plus 6 would be 2 and a half .... may not see Android R
I can live with that replacing a cell phone every two years is not unreasonable.
What bother me about software cycles is I know this is all arbitrary and is done so we would want to buy new phones.
Meanwhile if I wanted to root, I am sure my One Plus 6 will work with third party ROMs "download them from XDA" many years after OnePlus abandons my device.

It will receive Android R
Op6 will be updated to Android R as op3/3t launched with marshmallow and officially will be updated to Android pie as confirmed by OnePlus...Op 6 n Op6t(already launched on pie.. so definitely Android R) will receive Android R

Are we getting Android O/8.0?

Have anyone saw if we're getting update for the androod O?
The only sure thing is "updates for 2 years" we just dont know how many there will be.
I think we will be lucky if we see 7.1.X updates or EMUI 5.1 ...
After all if they give you Android 8 on Honor 8, how will they convince you to buy a new mobile in 1.5-2 years ? Its a market thing...
Same happened with OneplusX , you like it? you want more? buy a new model.
I do not believe we get the update on Android O.
Samsung keep their promise and gave android 5.1 for my old Galaxy s4.
If I couldn't receive 2 years update, I will erase the Huawei from list and Me, nor some one near me will never buy Huawei again. It's simple like that. We call it "trust". And miss using trust is a "one time" mistake.
I think we could receive it.
I personally don't it. We went five months without a simple security update. A full OS overhaul seems unlikely to me.

Not entirely irrelevant. Nougat brought native replies within notifications, that wasn't possible on Marshmallow (without Xposed). If Huawei's customizations bring the same or comparable features to an older version, I can live with that, but they don't always.

Agreed, though their target market in China prefers devices that behave similarly to iOS. Thankfully EMUI5 / Nougat is much closer to AOSP than EMUI4 / Marshmallow.

I wish it will happen in EMUI 6
Personally i hope but i think not. They don't even want to update to 7.1. Think about this, they made P8 (flagship version not Lite one) with a good hardware to support android 7.0 and even 7.1 and guess what? They killed it in favor of P8 lite 2017 that comes with Nougat and the hardware is just slightly different. The P8 just receives security patch updates (at least this phone receive it, we not), nothing more. I agree with those who say is a marketing thing. Talking about our phone, i think it's capable to get 7.1 and even O but probably it will die after the "Big" update with some EMUI 5.1 features on our EMUI 5.0. If we're lucky we'll get by time some security patch updates but nothing more. I wish they can keep their promises about 2 year updates, but actually i'm pretty diffident. Hope they can show me that i'm wrong
I think Honor 8 will receive another major update.
The fact they won't update Honor 7 (Yes, compatibility issues, but still...) disappointed lots of buyers. Making the same mistake with Honor 8 would destroy the reliability of the brand. I hope they're not so stupid.

The honor 7 wasn't updated to nougat because of Google's policy about the update (I don't know what is required exactly), and the honor 8 will get Android Or for sure.

Predicting the obvious?
Their beta is still ongoing I don't think we'll get it on the remaining days of 2017 nor even on January 2018.
Technically they can say- " well we did...there is beta Oreo released before 2018." which is lame.
Similar situations I had on Meizu with their flyme and huawei back when I had 6p...they said "well, there's an update, beta is out"

When will The oneplus 6 receive Android P stable version

I've searched for this everywhere.. but haven't find an answer.
What will happen to the oneplus 6 and the other unpixel devices that support P beta, when the development ends and google releases the public version ?
Will it be instantly updated alongside the pixel devices ?
isnt the whole purpose of treble to make the updates easily available, the rest is up to manufacturers
Android P will be in Beta till the Pixel 3 is released - normally November.
One would assume that a stable kernel and OS will be available for OnePlus to use around that time (maybe as late as Jan 2019 depending on OnePlus's resources). Be patient. If you are apart of the P beta program then get used to the issues associated with beta software

No, it's supposed to get it much quicker then other OEMs if a phone is part of Project Treble. The Google Pixel phones will ALWAYS be the first to get it as it's made for the Pixel line... the OEMs like OnePlus will get it sonner then most and it's just much easier to get it to the phones. So expect it roughly a month or so maybe 2 after it's released on the Pixel line.

What?? Why would it not be official until the pixel 3 launch???
Android P will probably be released in August like Android Oreo, and it will probably be official in August/September
Lol. People will never be happy... Whaaaa? No official P at the same time with Pixel 3? Feel blessed that you have Project Treble. Before Treble, OEMs was getting source code only after the final version was released. That was the point when OEMs could start working on their betas. Or to put it on other words: first betas late November (in the best scenario) and final release February, March. Now we have betas in May-June and people are still crying lol.

You asking question about when the beta will be released won't make the update come fast. You'll know when the update will be released. Till then keep researching.

I understand perfectly... Google will never allow another device to have the newest Android version before the pixel line and once it's out on the pixels, they will release it to the other pens when they choose, which likely will be a bit after it's on the pixels for a bit. It's just the way it is, treble or not.
what's the rush anyway?? it's a freaking phone not your life support system... smh

100% agree with this! If you want the latest and greatest first, then Pixel phones are the best options. For me, the latest security updates are the most important thing - any phone manufacturer that doesn't release these on time is dead to me (Huawei is the worst).. I think what OnePlus is doing is better than the average, so if you don't like it, move along..

It's available as a beta.. they're already in the process of customizing it... And that's a first for android and google.. and that's why in my opinion it should be available for the beta supported devices much faster than previous iterations, I Mean..... What's the point of the beta then ?

Nokia 8.1;Android One, starts receiveing Android 10, good news for A2 Lite ?

"HMD Global has announced the rollout of Android 10 for the Nokia 8.1, making it the first Nokia smartphone to get a stable build of the latest version of Android."
https://m.gsmarena.com/nokia_8_1_android_10_update-news-39549.php
Is this good news for any Android One phone, or Android One project, or is it a matter of manufacturers that build the phones, maybe this could have good effect on development of Android 10 for A2 Lite ?
Nokia always gave timely updates to their devices, this matter doesn't really have any effect on other androidone devices. Nokia also adds other features to their phones (they're all androidone afaik), like round ui, pixel blue accent color and cam2api. As far as updates go, xiaomi isn't that good with their androidone phones, so don't get your hopes up and get frustrated afterwards. I would love to have Android 10 soon but, I know it's not gonna happen. Cheers.
its strictly related to nokia, this. the fact that they will push it sooner then xiaomi means nothing to us. it all depends on Xiaomi when they will start working for it, and when will they release... nokia is known for being faster to update then xiaomi thats for sure. so just sit and wait
...or, you could install unofficial android 10, there is a good GSI version here on xda which works fairly well.

Okay let me ask this, do you consider the Pie update we got as stable? Because I still think that we never got a stable build of Pie from Xiaomi. I can't even update to September update because it breaks the digitizer for me and I can't even use the screen properly. I have no idea how stable is Nokia's version of Pie but maybe you can enlighten us about that.

In my eyes our Android Pie is very stable. I never had to reboot my device due to system instability bugs. The worst one I ever had was the screen rotate flash bug. My battery backup after one year of usage is still superb, usually I get 7 hours of screentime within 5-6 days of usage. Most reported bugs appear to be on devices which had installed custom firmware and messed up vendor partitions.
The only thing I dislike on this device is the low headphone sound volume while using a European Union display language. I'm just using U.S. English to fix that.
I don't know about bugs in Nokia phones, my brother never told me about anything special and I can't check his phone because he's in England and I'm in Germany.

Nothing official, but I think q1/2020 would be a good guess.
Last year Mi A1 got the Android 9 update on the 23rd of december.
My guess is Mi A2 Lite will get Android 10 in late december.
