I posted this on reddit yesterday, but it was removed for unknown reasons. So I recall my ancient xda account and post here.

I've finally got the oreo update today. Some people told me that my black navbar apk was no longer working on Oreo, so I've looked into the issue and updated it.
Read the following instruction.
On Oreo, you need to grant permission manually to apply changes.
Just installing this apk doesn't have any effect.
Screenshot:
https://i.imgur.com/87uwLlk.jpg
Install:
1. Unzip and install apk.
2. Reboot.
3. Open the terminal for adb and connect your phone in USB debugging mode.
If you have no idea what 'adb' or 'USB debugging' is, goto (USB debugging and adb).
4. Input the following code to the terminal, and press enter.
Code:
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.black_navigation_bar
5. Reboot.
6. Open "Settings > Display > Navigation Bar." disable "Apply current theme" and select the black color below it.
USB debugging and adb:
This is a good HOWTO for setting up USB debugging and adb.
https://www.themefoxx.com/2017/04/how-to-hide-the-navigation-bar-and-status-bar-on-the-galaxy-s8s8-plus.html
Follow the instruction up to Step4.
If you use Windows 10, There may be 'PowerShell' instead of 'command window.'
In that case, you may need to input the code like this.
Code:
.\adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.black_navigation_bar
Uninstall:
Open "Settings > App" and uninstall "com.android.black_navigation_bar".
No need to 'cmd overlay disable ...'. Granted permission will be removed by uninstall.
About its apk permission:
It is automatically assigned that way for replacing the Settings app's resource, but actually, it does nothing because it doesn't have even a single line of program code. If you worry too much, use apktool and decode this apk. You can see there aren't any harm in it.

Just installing this apk doesn't have any effect! You need to follow the instruction.
Great job and thanks.
I tested and its working.
@oyaxai
Works like a charm, thank you.
i follow the instruction but when i turn that option off, it says Setting has stopped.
The color of the navigation bar does change, but it changes to gray instead of black.
any ideas?

When did you get the stop error of the Settings app?
It may stop the Settings app on (4.).
Could you check your navigation bar color settings?
Is there a black option there like this?

Thanks again.
I used for a few days. Don't see any difference between this and adb the black navigation bar. Any difference?
In addition, can u do pixel , google type of navigation bar too?

Your "adb the black navigation bar" means you set the navbar color by adb settings?
Practically there is no difference, but if you use this apk, you can revert back the black color easily.
The navbar color tends to return to the original white in some situations like applying a new theme or enabling emergency mode.
I don't know much about pixel navigation bar, sorry.

Sorry, I don't come to mind the reason you got this error.
My apk may not go along well with your current theme or a minor difference between S8 variants may cause this.
It's difficult for me to fix it unless I can reproduce the error.
Thanks! Found it thru reddit
My OCD tells me that the nav bar wants to have the same color outside & inside of apps.
https://imgur.com/a/MFYAvZy
I know all the other colors are very light, that's why samsung picked this gray icon.
You can also use SystemUi Tunner from play store to turn it black. Just grant adb permission.
Is easier and u get some extra tweaks as well!
I use Navbar apps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps it allows custom navigation bar colors and more, no root, no pc or adb.
Edit: finally got around to going with method in OP, much better than an app, but you loose theme on icons.
I know this is S8 thread but I'm gonna tell ya it works magnificently on Note8 too!!

Hi Oyaxai,
Any chance this will work on S9 plus? I've just tested but no luck here..

Just wanted to say thanks! I recently moved back to Gboard and it creates a white navbar in all apps on my S8, this fixed that real quick.
Is there any solution for gray navbar's icons in some apps? Like play store
I realize this is a GS8/Note 8 thread but tried this on my Note 9 (running android 8.1) and the black option shows up in settings but the navbar stays white. Oh well, I guess it won't work past android 8.0.

what ROM are you using?
Thanks, this works like a charm on my Droid w/ ESE53 now! I do have a noobish question, though -- I was trying to theme this launcher a bit, but after I did, it wouldn't install anymore. I tried doing it throug ADB and get the following error:
Code:
INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE
And LogCat throws the error:
Code:
Package com.helixprogect.launcher has no signatures that match those in shared user android.uid.shared; ignoring!
I did have to re-sign the package using testsign.jar, but I'm guessing that I need to use different keys, but have no idea about how to do that. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
I have an q: is it possible to lift up the app bar icons few pixels?
The seem to be a bit low.

I am using stock nexus.
@btdownloads7
what command did you used? adb install? the reason is because user data of that app already exists on /data/data and hence adb detects the conflict of different apk being used.
try adb install -r
or if that doesn't work. delete the user data first before installing.
oh and also, mine spreading to the droids forums? thanks!
EDIT: worst case: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/3f084d78a15f6d3d
@DocRambone
i think i need a better solution for that. it has always been that low right? as in the handle view.. the icons alignment are made to follow handle view.. if not, it'll look messy.. imagine floating icons with sinking handle bar. :S
@htcmagic
if i dont mind, i'll need a logcat of after you try running that command..
I did use "adb install -r", and I didn't think that I'd need to wipe data because I used a Nandroid backup before I ever installed your original app. I'm using Pete's Bugless Beast rom right now, and will do a full system wipe and install it from scratch. Will let you know shortly if that works.
P.S. I just posted a link to this thread on AllDroid.
no no... not talking about wipe data.. do this:
adb shell rm -r /data/data/com.helixproject.launcher

Ahh, I misunderstood -- I already did this, but no luck. I'm going to wipe data anyway, just to see if the problem gets fixed.
And I was looking in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529124
It's talking about a totally different ROM, but I figured that the same principles would apply. And it looks like the people there didn't find an adequate solution. It sounded like the signature in the launches has to match the signature in framework-res.apk, but I'm pretty much a noob at this, so I couldn't figure out how to make that work.
wait dont! lol.

Quick theme for this launcher
OMG yes. I got so depressed when I found your Launcher2 mod and I couldn't get it to work on my Droid. This is PERFECT! I had tried Home++ before and loved the shortcuts on the bottom but H++ was buggy/unstable and I wished that I could drag my own icons down there. You took care of that and this thing seems fast and stable so far.
I hope to eventually get your Launcher2 but this will definitely keep me happy until someone with more Droid knowledge makes it work!
Thanks!
Btw, how difficult is it to change the tab on this launcher? I'd like to customize mine to match the smoked glass theme that I am using. Can I open the apk, modify the pngs, and then reinstall it?

LOL. Did that already as well. I should have mentioned all this in the op. There were no traces, and I made a Nandroid backup before wiping, so it's no big deal.
Still got the error message after full wipe and new ROM re-fash. Could you possibly modify the theme if I send you the PNG files? I'm trying to make it look like the Smoked Glass theme that I use in my stock launcher:
I don't know how good it'll look, but I modified the images to match the smaller app drawer handle, so I wanna give it a shot.

COOL! nice work man! i love your simplistic taste!
maybe i should use your menu icon instead of droid's.
@gardobus
Ask DocRambone
EDIT:
@htcmagic
have you allowed install on non-market apps? (settings->applications) if you have and it still doesn't work, i'm sorry, i guess unrooted phones needs to have valid signatures which can only be obtained through market.
@btdownloads7
hmm.. i think you encountering a similar problem with htcmagic. ask DocRambone how he did it. I have zero knowledge on theming. Heh.
For those interested in customizing your G2's here's a simple guide for installing Themer and combine it with LMT pie launcher to get a new look and feel on the phone. I did it on CloudyPro II so I don't know if will work on other ROMs but it should
The main ingredients you will need are:
Google Keyboard or any other keyboard you like.
Themer
Xposed Framework
G2 TweaksBox
LMT Pie Launcher
NexMusic or your preferred player supported by Themer.
After you have downloaded the listed apps the first one you have to install is the keyboard you chose and enable it as default. This is because you will need to disable the nav bar and after you do the LG keyboard will force close. Then as mentioned you have to disable the nav bar using G2 TweaksBox> Miscellaneous> check the "disable nav bar" box but don't reboot. Before you reboot make sure you installed LMT Pie Launcher and checked the first two boxes (Activate service and Autostart service) on the app's settings.
Then reboot your device and once you do you won't have the nav bar anymore but now you can use the LMT pie launcher to navigate through the phone. It can be launched by swiping from the left, right and bottom of the screen to the center. It can also be completely customized but I'll explain that later.
After you have disabled the nav bar, have enabled a keyboard and LMT pie is working you can install Themer as a normal app from the Play Store, choose a theme and apply it. Themer was recently updated to support LG's default Music app but they don't seem to get along that well yet. That's why I suggested to use NexMusic which has given me the best experience and works great from the lock screen too. You can select it from the Themer app and after you download it, it will be set as default.
So basically after you've installed everything your phone should look something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You can also customize the LMT pie and make it look similar to this:
LMT pie comes with a standard 5 buttons layout that should be enough to help you get through the setup process but if you want to customize it a little more you can go to the last section of LMT's settings, PIE, and there configure it button by button as well as the long press or even add a second line of buttons. The new custom buttons you choose will appear one by one as you select them. For customizing the color you can use a menu on the first section and there you can also raise the top radius, bottom radius and outline as well as many other features.
To add a lock/shutdown function you have to enable a custom key and set it to 26. That's the one that I have on the far left.
I started using it a couple days ago and haven't had any problem so far. The biggest loss you might get from disabling the nav bar is that you loose the option of using multi-window but I'm pretty sure there's a work around for enabling it on LMT; just haven't figured that out yet
Battery life is not affected at all and I can say it improved a bit on this specific theme I'm using because of the dark BG and UI. I wanted to share this because I really liked the way the G2 looks with Themer and also to start a discussion and see what new things I can learn from any of the apps I used.
Credit goes to all the developers of each and every app I mentioned so give your thanks to them and support their projects in any way possible. No need to leave thanks here, ideas and helpful discussions would be more appreciated.
Cheers

That's weird, that shouldn't be happening
Only the buttons you enable on the PIE section should appear and on all three sides (bottom, right and left). If you keep having this problem try wiping the app's data from the app manager and start over configuring the pie.
is it possible ? it is only transparent in the home screen not when you open apps unfortunately, the reason is that the screen would appear much bigger if it was transparent always, all navigation buttons are still clearly visible even in transparent mode.
the color could be adjusted with :
<color name="nav_background_opaque">#000000</color>
(com.android.systemui/theme.xml)
but I do not know if we can force to be transparant
if anyone has tested ?

Did you activate the module in XPosed and did you reboot afterwards?
I we have the same ver. Installed. I dont know why it wont work for me. I ticked the box to activate it and reboot. I reebooted twice just in case. Did you change your dpi? Bcuz I did.
I found an app. Autohide softkeys... not only it can make the nav bar autohide. You change the buttons, make it transparent and change colors. It really is hidden so it may cause a problem. When youmake it show, it will cover the bottom part of the screen. It wont move the screen up to make space.

As far as I know you can only achieve that by reducing the dpi, either globally (for the whole system) or just for the app that controls that status and nav bars, which is System UI. However, when changing the dpi of System UI, the nav bar buttons will veer off to the left instead of staying in the center. That's an unfortunate side-effect of Huawei's heavy skinning.
Apps you can use to change dpi are texdroider dpi (changes global dpi) and App Settings Xposed module, which lets you set the dpi for each app individually. I use 420 dpi (instead of standard 480) globally, and re-set some system apps back to 480 to prevent a mess in the layout ...
Btw there's a whole thread dedicated to this topic somewhere in the Mate 7 forum.

Thank you for your well detailed reply. Im using nova on 380 dpi. I chnaged the sys ui back to 480 but the stat and nav bar are too big. For some reason the dimesion editor on xposed is not working on my phone so i cant change the nav and stat bars. Still finding the sweet spot for my liking. Thanks again.

You can change the color setup of ghe nav bar and buttons. You can have the smallest transparent or colored nav bar you have ever seen. The thing is. It always overlaps the anything that you are in. Try it out to know what i mean. Just needs root.

Yes there is. The first thing I did when I got my S9+.. First, use adb to turn the nav bars to immersive mode. That will hide them but you can still swipe up. To completely get rid off them , you need Substratum+Andromeda+Samsung System Mods theme. Go to the theme and there is an option to remove them completely under System UI. The remove option requires the immersive mode first. Make sure you have your gestures navigation working prior to remiving the Nav Bars. I use Edge Gesture myself and it works great.

Use the adb to hide the nav bar only. Not the full.

works like a charm, i'm using all in one gestures. default launcher has an issue though, the homescreen and app drawer won't stretch, also the keyboard brings up a blank bar.
also, is the launcher mod for removing the page indicator working for you?

I use Nova. Dumped the default launcher because of the Oreo crappy notifications with Samsung Launcher along with the gap space when removing the Nav Bars.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9/how-to/remove-replace-navigation-bar-t3813885/post77020140#post77020140
The best way for me so far
I tried almost all app to remove and replace the navigation bar for my Samsung S9 but all of them facing serval crop screen and app UI issue. For example Samsung Internet new tabs alignment, Crop grey backgound when windows popping up (I will attache screenshot below.)
And now I think I found the best way so far to fix all these issue
- "Oneplus Gestures" is best one for me for the alternative app to replace the navigation bar because not like others, the pill of this app is always at the bottom (not shift) and it work on overlays app (ex: FB messenger)
- "Hide Nav Bar" is the app that I choose to remove the native nav bar but for now it has some issue which cropping some app and I have solution for that. You have to enable global immersive mode then exclude the apps that cropped. So far I found these apps need to exclude: Smart Capture, Edge Widget, Instagram, Gallery. By filter immersive mode for these app you could use "Immersive Mode Manager" app or just write this adb command
Code:
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.navigation=apps,-com.samsung.android.app.smartcapture,-com.samsung.android.app.widgetedge,-com.instagram.android,-com.sec.android.gallery3d
- Not finish yet, the fix other UI issue (Samsung Internet, Gallery) you need to use "Routines" app belong to Good Lock 2018 app to use Samsung Hide Nav Bar for Samsung Internet and Gallery app.
Then enjoy your edge to edge screen with gesture navigation. This work around fix all my issue when remove and replace navigation bar on my S9. If you find other issue feel free to discuss.

I want to thank you a lot for your post! The combination of these 2 apps works great!
Same here. I have been using one plus gestures and hide navbar for over a month now and I love it! I am so used to it that I can't go back to the navbar!! It is the best way to enjoy all the beautiful screen of our s9+

DarQ provides a per-app selectable force dark option for Android 10 and above.
It uses a root or Shizuku (ADB) service to apply the theme seamlessly and quickly, without needing an accessibility service.
DarQ also provides an option to apply the system dark theme (as well as selectable force dark) only after sunset and before sunrise, protecting your eyes when it's most needed.
Please read the Frequently Asked Questions sections in the app or here for more information and some answers to questions

Examples of apps with force dark enabled:
Changelog:
v2.2 & v2.2.1
DarQ 2.2 is a maintenance release with Android 13 support and a fix for location related crashes for the Auto Dark Theme option.
2.2.1 fixes a crash introduced in 2.2
v2.1
DarQ 2.1 contains a few new features and fixes:
Backup and Restore your config to device or the cloud
A rewritten Xposed module with the ability to make even more apps work with force dark, including Snapchat and an option (enabled by default) to fix the inverted (black on dark) status bar icon colors.
Fixed crashes related to navigation in the app
Fixed a crash where requesting root could cause a crash
Improved some Material You theming throughout the app
Please note, if you use the Xposed module currently, your settings may be reset by this update. Read the instructions in this post to workaround this.
v2.0
DarQ 2.0 is a complete, from scratch rewrite of DarQ, with a lot of improvements:
DarQ 2.0 has an entirely new design, with Material You elements and Monet (wallpaper-based) colours.
The ADB script is now gone, and instead Shizuku handles the service on non-root devices. If you don't know what Shizuku is, think of it like a Superuser app for non-root devices. Start Shizuku via ADB on a computer (or even on your phone on Android 11 and above) once per boot, and any app that uses Shizuku can use ADB services.
The Accessibility Service has been replaced with a ProcessObserver, using the Shizuku/Root service. This is much quicker than Accessibility, so apps that previously were opening too quick to be supported may now work.
Improvements to the auto dark theme at sunrise/sunset to work better on different devices.
Improvements to the Xposed module for apps that try to block the use of force dark, preventing them from doing so.

Apologies, I read this thread while half asleep
Absolutely awesome! Great work man! I'm on a Pixel 3Xl, dp4.
Looking forward to try this now that q is finally rooted for pixel 3 I just might jump on it again if next beta release is good ?
It forces the app drawer arrow to show. May be @Quinny899 can do something about it.

Thanks.
Works well! Thank you!
This is awesome already!! Few apps that I use very often that it did not work with: whatsapp, maps, google search
Unfortunately not working for me. Root & accessibility access given. DP4, GSI on a treble enabled device.
Toggling 'Enable Dark Theme' has no effect & 'Force Dark Theme' option won't let me toggle the switch but it shows 'Restart any apps to apply this change' message when tapped.
I selected some apps & toggled force dark manually from dev settings but the selections don't seem to apply that way too.
If you need logs let me know. Thanks
I see in the screenshots the dark mode is like a "grey" mode. Can it be #ff0000 black?

Not unless Google themselves add this. This app only activates the built in dark mode force which isn't full black

It activated whatever dark mode the app can support. I have some black and some dark. No choice between them, but some are black. It depends how the app is built. I have a few news apps that go black, and few others are dark.

There was a comparison done between full black and grey dark implemented by google recently. Practically, there is no difference in battery consumption for the two. But if you like the full black for aesthetics, then you are out of luck.
