The only thing keeping me from buying this device: video stabilization - Huawei P20 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

I do think this time Huawei really has a wonderful device: it checks every box I can imagine for a top notch device:
- great screen
- great camera (photo)
- great battery
- nice design
- frontal finger print reader
Everything but video stabilization!!!!! I mean, how, HOW can it be that this great device is not able to stabilize video @1080/60 nor @4K/30?!!??! This is a shame! When I pay almost 900€ for a mobile phone I want to be able to use it completely!!!
Do you think Huawei will change its mind and introduce video stabilization for 1080/60 and 4K/30 like Oneplus did for the 5T???
I do really hope so! Waiting till then to finally buy it!

Hi Aratheba,
The video camera review by SupaSaf on YouTube shows stabilisation at 1080p, not sure if this is 30 or 60fps however !

I can tell you for sure that sadly it's only @1080/30

Yes - Can also confirm the stabilsation is only 1080p at 30fps. This should be more than enough for most users and now that the prices of handheld gimbals have come down that would be another option. I hope they can bring an update to enable at least EIS on 4k or 1080 60fps like how One Plus did.
DJI Osmo Mobile 2 - £120.00
Smooth Q - £99.00
P.S - P.S - Have also preordered the P20 and returned my S9. I only have 1080p TV at home anyway and will get a gimbal for some serious videography

Not me...I have a 4k capable TV...anche it's really a joy to watch 4k content.
Moreover I can't stand to spend 899€ and not being able to have a stabilized video. [emoji36]

agree this is a real bummer. Fix Huawei

Does it have 3x optical zoom on 1080 60 fps ?

At the end it comes down to priorities between 1080p and 4k.
Everybody will have a different option like me with only 1080p TV in my house and using a smartphone stabiliser for serious 4k recording. 1080p 30fps for everyday videos is enough for me but am also hoping they bring some 1080p 60fps EIS
A new update is coming with the new ISO limit 102500 so praying huawei also stick in some extra stabilsation

Besides what's important for me...I do think that such an expensive 2018 flagship phone MUST have video stabilization (EIS at least).
Where did you read about the new update?

I 100% agree with you about stabilization . I just returned my S9 due to its battery issues (due to exynos chipset)
I read about it on YouTube video.
A reviewer recently reviewed the photo and going through the ISO modes it only went up to ISO 3400 and someone confirmed that huawei confirmed that ISO 102500 would be included in a software update.
The reviewers all have pre-production handsets and roughly by tommorrow they should get the final handset from huawei to confirm their final review (embargo lifted

If you use opencamera or ultracorder (hevc) at 3k resolution (3264x1840) then EIS works nicely, looks really smooth. Admitedly it's not 4k, but its still much better than 1080p. I'm currently using ultracorder at 36.7mbit maintier level6.2 with EIS enabled and it really does look nice.

Not correct. After build 128 , pro mode iso can be set at 102,400. I know this as I had build 128 installed .

Yes that is correct. I am not on 128 now, I just had it for a short while last week to test out stuff but rolled back to an earlier build now. I am sure there must be some others on 128 though who can answer the shutter speed max.

Yes, thats true., at least on build 128 But the max shutter speed that I've got was 1/[email protected] ISO (strange, it's really very high, but that's what camera reports) If the light is to high, it stays at 1/4 sec, so ISO higher then 6400 is not usable in broad daylight, which is understandable. I yet have to try it at the night

4K video mod possible?

Any luck in shooting 4K video? I know some china phones such as LeTV S1 can do 4K video with the Google camera app. Any tweak like that tried on the mate 8?
i dont see the point of 4K video tbh...
I mean I've read somewhere, that the soc can't manage 4k?! For me it's irrelevant.

but huwaie camera image processing soft is ****
Here is where i read it http://www.anandtech.com/show/9762/hisilicon-announces-kirin-950-huawei
On the multimedia side, the company did not talk much about its encode and decode capabilities, limiting it to a single line in a single slide of their presentation, meaning we had to probe for further details. While the new SoC can now decode HEVC at up to 4K resolution at 30fps, the encode capabilities have not evolved from the previous generation and thus is limited to 1080p30 H.264. This also means that while the ISP would be able to handle 4K video, the actual encoder would make it impossible to actually implement 4K recording on a device product without a reduction in frame rate.

I do as I want to shoot video and save for the future. Kids growing up etc.... 10years ago videos were encoded in 240p. Back then we all thought it was the best. Today we laugh at anything under 1080p.... in 5years full HD will be Scheiße. Evolution
with your reasoning it would never make sense to take any pictures or videos, cuz of evolution

oh god, can anyone please stop saying "we never need X" where X is a new technology. I like 4K and I shoot with a NX1 that is capable of H265 (HEVC) 4K DCI (Cine 4k!) and it looks great. I really wanted to buy the Mate 8. I was a phablet early adopter with the Samsung Note 1. Currently using a Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. The biggest drawback for me with the Mate 8 is the absence of 4K recording. I like the decision to make the display FHD only, because it's still over 400ppi, which is enough on that size and saves a lot of power, but come on Huawei, not everyone watches recorded video on a smartphone, some people use footage shot with smartphones in NLE software and watch it on 4K devices
I really hope the HW is capable of encoding 4K, so someone can mod the camera app. If not, then I'm waiting for Huawei to release another phablet or just go with the next Xiaomi phablet.

[Q] Is Capturing in 60fps worth the trade-offs?

Hey Guys,
I wonder if it is actually worth the trade-offs we get when we capture in anything higher than 1080p30, such as loss of video stabilization, etc? I would like to get the best videos possible while being worth for the trade-offs. Thanks
Hi !
Actually, I use FHD 60fps and it's just the best for me : great details, great colors (even if it's without HDR), and the fluidity is awesome ! The stabilisation is quite good, personnaly I do not see the difference between FHD (with OIS) and FHD 60fps (without it). UHD, QHD ... nothing compete with FHD 60fps When you are accustomed to 60fps, you will never leave it haha

lol, thanks for ur reply. Also, since the S6 has OIS, doesnt that mean it should work in any resolution but when aided with DIS it only works below 60fps? So what I mean is, below 60fps: OIS + DIS, >60fps, OIS only, right?

Not exactly, I think more to a thing like that :
- Below 60fps : OIS + DIS
- 60fps and over : just DIS
I think the only smartphone who capture with OIS over FHD 30fps is the iPhone 6S Plus

I don't quite think so because the ois is a hardware feature so it should always work but with DIS, since it's software (works by cropping) it may not be able to keep up with high res. That's just my opinion, I'm not sure. Will research about it tmw. [emoji106]

It's the opposite, OIS works for an infinite amount of frames as it's a physical gyroscope keeping the camera from shaking and not your CPU doing work to stabilize the video. OIS is just on and there's only 1 app that I know of that you can disable it, somehow.
I switch between 60fps and 30fps w/ ois depending on the situation at hand. If I want to record what ever is view at a steady hand I'll use the ladder.
If I want fluid motion I'll switch to 60fps.

Any good Xperia Z5 vs X camera performance article?

Hi there,
There is a Z5 vs X camera review here:
https://recombu.com/mobile/article/sony-xperia-x-vs-xperia-z5-vs-samsung-galaxy-s7-camera-review
(actually, the article is Z5 vs X vs S7 review, but I don't pay much attention to the S7).
From what I can read, Z5 and X camera experiences are vastly similar.
Anybody with a link to another review comparing the Z5 and the X?
Also, the X doesn't support 4k camera recording? Crazy!
From what I read neither X model supports 4k recording mode. I am even wondering if it supports 1080p 120fps and/or 720p 240fps.. The SD820 can easily handle it, SD800 handles 55mbit 4k recording without problems. Also other brands using SD820 does 4k recording so we can rule out the SoC as being the problem. That leaves us with it being badly designed as in heat management, sensor gets to warm (strange considering previous Z phones) or just a business decision. All are stupid and bad decisions and it looks like they are going the Doro phone way.
That said that comparision is pretty much worthless. All the photos are downscaled and you cant see them in larger size so it only thing to compare is colors and exposure.

even I watched a youtube video that showed Xperia X overheated after only 4mins of 1080p 60fps video recording!
I'm going to assume that was a defective device, but if this is going to be a widespread problem then SONY is done!

Well that was a fake video. Looking at his comments he had a grief with Sony claiming all previous Xperia Z phones overheated in the same way amongst other ravishing comments. So we can disregard it when lots of people report it can record far beyond 4 minutes.
That said the X series do feel a bit like a 'pick parts of the shelf that are remaining and build a new phone' plus some added extras. They are going in the wrong direction and not listening to their users. They even calculate they will go at a loss this year on number of sold units.. Well of course! The definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different result!
Our z5's camera overheats the same, right? I just tested it, 25 C ambient temperature, [email protected], it stops before 4 min mark. Doesn't it do the same for everyone?

I will try again but if I recall, even since I bought it there were video reviews that showed 4k video recording stopping well before 10 mins mark. I remember trying it last winter, 17-20 degrees C, it stopped at around 5 minutes.
update: I tried the 4k outside, breezy, 22 deg C. I stopped it myself after 10 mins, CPU was at 52 C from 40 on idle. Also my phone is in its spigen case, filmed on external sdcard.
I imagine the ambient temperature to make or break the difference. I will try some other time inside at 25 degrees or more, I expect the camera to stop working before 10 minutes. I know it did so in the past.

Bad camera quality ?

Hello guys, yesterday i got my Honor 8 and tonight i made some video recordings, the thing is that when i zoom (even only a little bit) the camera quality is very bad. Even my mother's Note 3 has a better quality, i had both phones and i tried to record the same thing at the same time. So is that normal ? P.S. I have no ideea how to use PRO Mode, i was on Auto. Tbh all huawei can't take good zoom photos, but it is a lot better with less noise than older huawei phones. Sure u can return the phone if not satisfied?
The Honor 8 is the wrong phone to use if you want to make video recordings. It only does 1080p and doesn't have OIS, so hand shakes are magnified the more you zoom in (and it's digital zoom, not optical zoom either).

Cmon guys, stop complaining about camera. This is a phone, not a digital camera! Photos made by H8 are decent. In low light conditions, go with Pro photo mode and play with options, there is plenty of choices... As I said, quality of photos are not the best - in range of Samsung Galaxy S7 or Google Pixel, but decent!
Anyway, use flash always (not auto, but on), in all conditions!
From the video comparison I seen on YouTube, Honor 8 video recording actually look better than both Pixel and iPhone 7 @ 1080p, unfortunately it lacks OIS so is shaky. There is just no point to zoom on a smartphone unless you have optical zoom like the iPhone 7 Plus, or at least have 4K recording, and OIS is going to be a must.
I think you should get the iPhone 7 Plus if you want to zoom. Or perhaps an Android phone that has larger micron per pixel (1.25um or more) and OIS.

Realme 5 Pro's camera app is completely useless. Any updates coming?

On paper Realme 5 Pro has a great hardware profile, but in reality its camera app is super lame and pretty much useless.
1. First of all, the stock camera app does not allow us to shoot in the most popular 16:9 ratio. Even the so called "Expert mode" is stuck at 4:3 and there is no way to expertly change this. Are you kidding me??? What kind of an expert would shoot in 4:3 anyway??
2. Second, the camera app does not offer much of a choice between different resolutions. We are stuck with only three options - 48MP, 12MP and the super small (and thus completely useless) 2MP macro. And that's all, folks... Even my old 2014 phone offers a plethora of resolutions to choose from. Not Realme 5 Pro, though.
3. Third, the camera app does not offer electronic image stabilization (EIS) for 4K video. Again, it is almost year 2020 and 4K is THE standard these days. Not offering image stabilization for 4K is like not offering 4K at all. I know that the hardware allows it, so sit on your butts and release an update that offers EIS for 4K video!
4. Last, but not least - there are no Gcam or Sapdragon Camera app distributions that work without problems on Realme 5 Pro. So not only the stock camera app sucks, but on top of that third party apps do not work properly with it as well.
So far Realme 5 Pro's camera app has been an enormous disappointment!
I really hope that the people form the software department of Realme would read this and would offer the necessary updates, so people would finally be able to make use of this phone's cameras. Owners should start sending them messages about all these issues.

No, you cannot change to 16:9 in the settings.
You only have three options to choose from:
- 4:3
- 1:1
- Full screen (which is something like 19.5:9)
See the attached image below.

I think realme 5 pro, with gcam, is one the best camera you can have at its price range. Actually, forget about comparing it with the similarly priced phones. So go ahead, borrow your friend's galaxy s9 or s10 as I did, compare the result side by side on large pc monitor and tell me your finding.

Almost all image sensor chip in modern smartphone like Sony IMX586 in realme 5 pro is 4:3 ratio. So is the sensor in mirrorless MFT camera. So 4:3 image will give you native and full resolution. Any other ratio like 16:9 is cropped out from 4:3 image, that means less area covered vertically and thus less mega pixel. You can always crop to 16:9 format in software.

Again, do a little research and you'll see much more expensive phones are 12 MP. Why would you want other resolution like 8 / 6 / 4 MP? To save space? Or higher than 12 MP like 16 or 24 MP for example? Why do you think the most expensive phones in the market capped at 12 MP? Hint: higher MP does not mean better picture.

Which other phones in the price range of realme 5 pro that do EIS in 4K? A little suggestion, get a gimbal like DJI Osmo mobile 3 that cost a little over USD 100 and get much better result.

My gcam works fine here for photos. For video I use stock camera because it has EIS. If you mean the slow motion feature of gcam, look around and you'll see that feature doesn't work in other phones as well.

My finding is TONS of very coarse noise in the shadows, mushy definition and blurred lines. This is what my finding is.

I need in-camera 16:9, so I can do my frame compositing in the viewfinder, while I am shooting. I can't be bothered to crop 4:3 down to 16:9 in post production (which can lead to all sorts of trouble, like having to chop a subject's limb off). You need to know what the final result would be from the get go.

I know that higher Megapixels do not always equate to better quality picture. However, I shoot hundreds of photos daily and I need the smaller MP sizes to save memory and also to have faster speeds in post-processing (smaller photos load and render faster in PhotShop and LightRoom than 48MP or even 12MP photos). Having the option to choose from several file sizes is just good for general flexibility - and flexibility is a thing that is always nice to have.

I don't know which other phones do have EIS in 4K, I am a Realme 5 Pro owner and this is the only phone that I care about. And it so happens that this phone does not have EIS in 4K, which sucks.
If I wanted to carry a gimbal with me, I'd be better off carrying a bulky mirrorless camera with in-body-image-stabilization. A gimbal defies the purpose of shooting with a phone (which is the phone's pocket size, mobility and portability). Tripods, gimbals, steadicams, etc. are not needed and are a burden when you simply have EIS. So the guys from Realme should put their efforts in offering this option to the users.

Gcam doesn't work at all for video on my Realme 5 Pro. It crashes with slowmo, it does not offer EIS in 4K and it doesn't even offer 4K video recording. Also, the photo sizes can't be adjusted to my liking, just as with the stock camera app.

Which gcam variant are you talking about? I am using this one. It does 16:9 at 8.3 and 6 MP flawlessly and should address one of your concern.

You said realme 5 pro is completely useless because of that one feature missing, and yet you can't, and will not, find any other phones that can do that. The title should be written like: "ALL phones that can't do EIS in 4K are completely useless". Good luck in finding the alternative, this year or even the next at this price range.

I was using Gcam 7.2
Your older version of Gcam seems to offer 16:9 (which is nice!), however, there is still no way to shoot video in 4K with this version (see attached screenshot below). It only allows for 1080p, 720p and 480p - no 4K option to be seen on the horizon...
...and just because we can have 16:9 through older Google Camera versions, doesn't make Realme 5 Pro's stock camera app less useless. It is complete garbage and needs a ton of work before it can offer anything useful to the owners.

Phones with a Snapdragon processor (like Realme 5 Pro) are supposed to work in 4K with EIS, when using the Snapdragon Camera app. So, obviously the hardware allows it, and it is just a matter of writing the right software.
Unfortunately, like I said in my original post, there are no Sapdragon Camera app distributions that work on Realme 5 Pro. Or at least not yet. So, not only the stock camera app sucks, but on top of that good third party apps do not work properly with it as well.

Complete garbage? Well, speak for yourself. I am the owner of this phone, and I think the stock camera is nice for shooting video in FHD 30 fps with EIS when I don't bring my dji gimbal. I don't shoot in 4K, only FHD. I'm sure the majority owner of realme 5 pro don't feel as strongly as you do about 4K video for a phone that cost only about USD 200-250 depending on the variant.

There are a lot of assumptions there. Name one phone with SD7xxx, SD6xx, or even the ones with SD8xx that can do EIS in 4K. Usually when a person says that the camera of phone A is "completely useless" or "complete garbage", he/she would ready to provide a proof that better phone B, C, or D do exist. And with that, I rest my case.

Speak for yourself, buddy, because 4K is the new standard in video and if you are not shooting in 4K, you are just living in the past.

OK, buddy, here you go: Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro shoots 4K with EIS when using the Opencamera app.
And surprise, surprise, the Snapdragon CPU on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is an OLDER model than the one in Realme 5 Pro.
So, if a phone with an old Snapdragon 636 CPU and only 3 GB of RAM can shoot 4K with EIS, then why a phone with Snapdragon 712 woudn't???
The answer is: because the developers at Realme need to sit on their butts and start working on this major issue. Otherwise, Realme 5 Pro is just a total waste of decent hardware.
Your arguments just don't hold water, so instead of grasping at straws, go ahead and write a letter to Realme's developer team. Maybe if enough owners write them, they would listen and would do something about it.

Is that the best you can do, giving a link to a thread that none has participated, with "reserved for video samples" post that has not been updated since last march? The OP even said: "the stabilization is not as great compared to fullHD stabilization".
It seems that you have found your solution already. Trade your realme for redmi note 5 pro. Enjoy.
The problem I found is that recording in 1080/60 fps is very laggy and not smooth. In Realme 3 60fps is ultra smooth

Interesting, thnaks for pointing this problem out.
I haven't tested the 1080p yet. Been trying to find a solution for the lack of EIS in 4K only, but I would not be surprised if there is a problem with 1080p too.
Videos are also undersaturated. In photo you can boost colors but not in video.
Now, for me the camera was the main reason to buy this phone. I record video lectures and video recording is very important for me, especially 1080/60fps (maybe sd712 supports also 4k60fps?), EIS and all this stuff. I compared this camera to camera from Realme 3 pro and recordings and photos made with r3pro are nicely saturated and 60 fps is super smooth. I had also impression that in 1080/30fps with EIS Realme 3 pro was doing better job in terms of smoothness. Definitely our hardware has potential but seems that software is messed up. Only hope is that Realme will do something with that. But we have to make them somehow aware of the problem.

Same here. I bought this phone mainly because of its cameras and also because the hardware specs looked great on paper.
However, the camera software that came with the phone turned out to be a pile of horse manure. This Realme 5 Pro deal is like having a Ferrari and not being able to drive it faster than 10 mph.
Let's start sending mails to Realme's development team and see if they would care to do something about it.
ColorOS 7 is coming to our device in February, going to be (suppose to be) major update, hopefully they will fix it in this update. Is there any plan for December or January update?
you guys should try cinema 4k camera app i tried it on my friend redmi note 7.
it was awesome it can record 4k videos @30fps with eis very smooth.
but my realme x2 cant i have been trying to root it so to know if i can get eis in third party camera like GCAM,filmic pro and cinema 4k
I'm getting 5-6 second freezes in slow motion 240 fps!!! On stock ROM. 120 is slightly better but... This if pathetic
Somehow i feel from this thread that flagship output is being expected from a mid-ranger.
Expectations from the device should be realistic and not wish based.

The reality is that Redmi 5 pro (Snapdragon 636) can pull smooth 1080/60 fps recording and 4k with EIS. Realme 5 pro cannot. And our wishes are based on the fact that in our device seats Snapdragon 712 and high-end optics (same like in OnePlus 7t). This are realistic, common sense expectations

Devices with weaker processors can record 4K video with EIS. There is no reason why Realme 5 Pro should not be able to do the same.
R5P does have the necessary hardware power, it is a matter of writing the right software. Hope the developers at Realme would do something about it.
