Bootloader Unlock - Nokia 7 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

The Nokia 7 Plus is a perfect midrange premium device and supports Treble too but what bothers me is the lack of an official bootloader unlock method. From Nokia's past actions its very difficult to guess what Nokia will offer in 2018, at first this phone excited me but the past events disappointed again. Hope Nokia atleast offers official bootloader unlock method, if not kernel sources, then also we'll be able to flash a GSI on it

isn't nokia obliged to have the bootloader of this device unlockable, considering it has an android one monicker? i expected this phone to support the bootloader unlocking via fastboot just like the google phones.

xactly man........pointed out the right thing, I missed it...... @phhusson as we were discussing about the nokia devices, they might be unlockable like the Mi A1 and other android One devices

That's what I'm counting on. So far Nokia was throwing me off because they don't allow to unlock bootloader despite saying months ago they acknowledge community is requesting it and that they will discuss it whit their dev team (that was one of Nokia marketing guys)
Xiaomi had to allow regular bootloader unlock through fastboot command like Nexus and Pixel (without asking Xiaomi for permission and waiting 2 weeks till they grant it to you like with all regular Xiaomi devices)
My hope is that Nokia 7 plus will have to work the same way being Android One phone.
One thing I noticed is it has its own Nokia camera app the same way MiA1 has Xiaomi Camera app. Hoping that with unlocked bootloader, rooted, there will be no problem using moded Google Camera app. Or maybe Nokia camera app will be so good there will be no point bothering with Google Camera app, maybe for portrait mode.

If the Nokia camera app turns out to be good enough, someone on XDA will port it to other devices too.

Same here......I've also kept these 2 phones in my shortlist, Nokia 7+ or G6 Plus

inside china google cannot enforce their will on the oem, hence nokia has to bend to somebody else's wishes. but i think outside of china, google will enforce its requirements on android one phones. so i have high expectations that this device will have unlockable bootloader. let's see......

Android one devices have the option by default to enable OEM UNLOCK in developers settings so I guess inside China also the device will have this option to get the bootloader unlocked

Yeah, i think the same way. Nokia 7+ and 8 Scirocco are my number one choice for this year so far, but i checked the other Nokia`s phones forums here and this locked bootloader ruins it all. I like to root and customize my phone (even if it comes with a pure android) but with a locked bootloader it`s complicated.
Hope the 2018 releases get unlocked. If not i`ll have to look for other alternatives...

Please, somebody develop this for NOKIA 3 fans

Hi there guys, i want to ask if somebody can create a template for Nokia 3 without using a launcher. Or if possible, to create a modified ROM that is able to slide the apps from menu horizontally and not vertically, if it possible to remove the apps border from the home menu, if it possible to remove the white background in menu with an wallpaper, and to show the rounded icons.
Here is my idea:

miui is very hard to port, lineageos/rr/aosp is easier to port. We need to find ROM with same specs (same CPU, same GPU, same RAM) or similar specs. Just port ROM need to have same kernel version as stock ROM (3.18.35+ for Nougat or 3.18.60+ for Oreo).
I think because of the regularity of updates, people are less concerned about custom roms. At last I am less concerned about them. It says something when i'll rather stick with the stock recovery than with a custom one

i only care about custom roms because nokia stock roms are bad in performance because of a lot of system apps (deleting some system apps helped but still it's not that good) and a lot of RAM usage.

Probably because there is no development on other Nokia devices either?
Someone has asked for MIUI on the Nokia 3.
Why?
MIUI is absolutely terrible and not something I want to see or use.
I really think because of Nokia's almost stock android no one can really be bothered to develop them right now.
I might be wrong and would love to see a lineage or AOSP ROM but why bother if we are getting android P eventually? (As announced by Nokia / HMD a few weeks ago)

Unwanted apps? Name them? I don't have any unwanted or unnecessary apps, I have what I want and need and no bloat.
The stock UI is the best I've ever used, and battery is much better since the Oreo update.
I'll admit it was very poor running nougat.
Name me another cheap android device that getting updated to android P and gets regular Google security updates guaranteed for two years?
There isn't many......
Obviously your opinion is totally respected but I can only tell you I'm happy with my device as it is, no other device I've had recently gives me such a lag free or problematic time as the Nokia does, it's flawless (to me)
I do notice many complaints about the Nokia 3 though, so others must be using their device differently or more heavily than I do.
Anyway, what's that got to do with this discussion?
If no other Nokia devices are being actively developed do you really honestly think someone is going to start just because you think it has alot of unnecessary apps installed or the battery is poor?
No, of course not.
If there was a lineage or AOSP ROM I would use it, definitely.
I have a device on lineage 15.1 and it's very good.....
Edit
If no one is interested in developing this device then it won't happen, whatever you or me think.

Agree, it's really nice. I compared it to my Axon 7 and of course Axon 7 is faster but surprisingly Nokia 3 kept apps in multitasking same as Axon 7 and battery is much better. Battery is very good with both Oreo and Nougat.
I think the fact that there are regular updates is another reason why people aren't so charged up about custom roms.
I think lineage is still on 7.x, nokia 3 is on 8.x and will probably reach 9.x well before Lineage.
Also, if the source code had been available last year when the phones where still new, custom roms might have been made, but now it has become last year's phone.
Some of us also remember the hoops we had to go through just to unlock the bootloader.
Maybe when they no longer release updates for the phone, if it's still popular enough, people might start to develop again

P20 Pro vs OP6

I have the choice to keep a op6 or p20 pro
Just looking for some feedback about the two phones from users who have used both
Op6 is a speed demon, amazingly blazing fast
P20 pro has the cameras going for it
And the 4k battery along with volte
My op6 doesn't have volte where I'm from so I'm stuck with voice over 3G
The op6 has a better user experience given the speed and fluidity of the device
What would you chose and why?
For me it is a very easy choice as huawei has just said that they will not unlock their bootloader anymore.
No unlocked bootloader == no modifications or custom roms possible.
So if someone will go to modify some system settings all huawei phones are a bad choice.

Already have a unlock boot loader
Magisk running, that's all I really need
Well, even if you have an unlocked bootloader: Probably many future devs won't be able to unlock theirs. So no strong community around the phone = useless, to have an unlocked bootloader by yourself only.
And this reason was the final decision to abandon my Note 8 (Exynos). Community is all I need and I'm really excited to get LineageOS again. Damn, I miss this ROM really bad. And kernels, tweaking, getting my phone into a soft-brick (yeah, I really miss it, because it means learning)... I really tried to hate OnePlus. Especially for the Camera2 API for the OP3(T) never got fixed. Fought and lost. But if you search for any possible successor of the Nexus phones... you'll crawl back to OnePlus - no matter what you do.

Unlock bootloader officialy

HMD Global, the manufacturer of the recent Nokia phones, has notoriously been against releasing kernel source codes for its devices, despite their popularity. And even when it does push those out to the development community, it typically prevents people from unlocking the phones' bootloaders, which hampers customization options. But this morning brought news that Nokia 8 owners could do just that: unlock their bootloaders.
To the passionate developer and modding community out there, we have news to share!
You can now unlock the bootloader of your #Nokia. #BootloaderUnlock #Nokiamobile

yes, but.. is one step to have unlocking of N7p... IF HMD is not TOO stupid, and not want have unlocking after 1 year after release (as i think is Nokia8), because of-course this NOT help growing developers community, is NEED have unlocking max some month after release, OR all possible developers buy ANOTHER phone from ANOTHER company, or SELL his already buyed N7p...

Very true! Even I am planning to get a Poco F1. It may not have super built quality, but Xiaomi atleast allows its devices to be modified. They have even selected a handful of XDA developers and giving them Poco F1 for free so that they can develop good custom ROMs and kernels for the device. This is the difference in between Xiaomi and Nokia.

i too thinking about Poco F1, although sure be lower quality and plastic, although i not want more cpu power:
- officialy unlocking bootloader from day of release
- in day of release released kernel source
- official statement that unlocking bootloader NOT "void warranty"
- official statement (and recommendation!) that user can try/install GSI or custom ROM
- official support of xda developres by donating multiple Poco F1 devices to them!!!
this is REALLY different that Nokia, yes Nokia (HMD) too have some nice approach:
- AndroidOne
- N7p in beta program
- collaboration with Carl Zeis
but WHY not have GOOD HW and GOOD COMMUNITY support?? Nokia she could "next best Nexus line for users&developeres&community", if not stupid...

The biggest drawback of Nokia devices are very less resell value. Just to give you an example. I sold my 10 months old Xiaomi Mi A1 for 8500 rupees which cost me around 15000. And my 2 months old Nokia 7 plus is not getting more than 15000 which cost me 26000. Which means I will now have to accept a loss of 11000 in just two months. I tried everywhere (e.g. Olx, Quikr, Cashify, local vendors) but nobody is offering me more than 15000. All retail vendors told me the same thing that Nokia devices do not have resell value. I would have never bought a Nokia device if I knew that before.

If you use this strategy you need to buy iPhone not Android phones. Best resell value. I buy my phones looking at the features I need and when I buy another phone, my old phone became my backup phone.

I think I mentioned the resell value of Xiaomi Mi A1 which is an Android device. And features gets old faster with new features coming every day. So, no wonder we may want to resell our device in order to get a new one with the latest features and not everyone needs 2-3 devices. Decreasing the device value of 11k in just two months is insane. I wonder what would be the value of the device after 5-6 months. No wonder, I have made a big mistake and I am regretting now. But lesson learnt.

Never buying another Nokia phone again. The situation with the bootloader being unlockable officially was the last straw. By the time they allowed it with Nokia 8 the xda community had already moved on now almost 2 years after its release nobody has bothered to create a custom rom for it, all because of HMD. Nokia 7plus is gonna suffer the same way even though it has huge potential.

Yeah, maybe you should buy a pixel then (3x the price though)?
Or maybe a OnePlus (Chinese also!). Mi A2?
What about a good ol' Samsung? My friend's s8 just got it's first update to Pie (still 'fresh' after half an year), not to mention Knox on top of locked bootloader!
I am not saying it was ok what happend, but was just a mistake with a batch of phones (also maybe that is why all this mess with 2 versions of updates for international model).
Except the pixels and essential phones, I do not think any other phone is with security patch up to Feb.

Coming from a Xiaomi mi mix 2s. Phone has great specs in comparison to this one. I strictly also knew this is a budget device, and for the price I can't complain. With a smooth ui and root, it's a simple phone that does what I personally need it for. The camera in this phone blows away the mix.
The wireless charge was also a feature I thought I'd miss but I just don't, and the battery lasts forever in comparison. I used to fall for the pretty colors the displays on the big brands show off. Yes, they are nice, but after a year they look like any other screen out there anyways. This display is perfectly fine, does well in all lights and is quite large.
Also the feature sets the big name brands threw out there of course are cool, but when it comes down to it the less BS that is on the phone the better it works. Plus when I bought those devices I would be unlocking and flashing ROMs anyways to remove all that bloat.
This phone is not a gaming rig, it is a basic smartphone that has decent specs. Overall I cannot complain, my old phone has much, much better hardware and a newer OS, but this phone is perfect. Only root needed with the Android One ui experience. Don't get me wrong, if developers pick this thing up I'm game to ROM it, but it just doesn't need it. 5/10 if you're looking for a flagship, but 10/10 if you're looking for a budget device.
Its mid march and not a single AOSP ROM. I am so tempted seeing this phone going for a steal on swappa in great condition, but i need AOSP. i add F-Droid and use mostly FOSS Apps. Aurora store covers the play store apps i must absolutely have. But i need AOSP because i want no play services, no google nothing.
Hopefully Motorola will release source code for G 5G and Ace, and we need developers to make Lineage

No, what we need is full R/W access after root. I have yet to be able to move anything around thanks to this new crap with Android 10. If the Devs are going to do anything hopefully its give us a Android Pie Rom.

i have the Moto one ace 5g US unlocked version straight off the shelf from Best Buy and the bootloader unlock is not supported by the moto portal so i guess we are SOL for root or any other development yeah?

I know thjis is a old post, but did you try using their format tool on the motodev portal for formatting the unlock_data string? I jumped to the same conclusion with my moto one action, however in the end it was user error on my part.
Ive had my Ace for about 12 hours, and have:
Unlocked the bootloader
Flashed HavokOS
Flashed Lineage 18.1
Flashed Android 11
Rooted\Magisked\Riru'ed\EdXsposed\GravityBox'ed
..and the phone has cooperated like a champ. I'm intentionally hard on phones, for hey thats how you learn! That and heh the wonderful folks of XDA ;-)
