That text in Mirror sounded as continuations of the paranoia regarding Russia and China. It could be true, it could be false, but for sure somebody is gathering info on us by cellphone, mostly US companies. If you need to be anonimus avoid all modern ways of communication. I don't give a crap if they gather info on my location and phone numbers, they can be only jealous where I am

Never buying another Nokia phone again. The situation with the bootloader being unlockable officially was the last straw. By the time they allowed it with Nokia 8 the xda community had already moved on now almost 2 years after its release nobody has bothered to create a custom rom for it, all because of HMD. Nokia 7plus is gonna suffer the same way even though it has huge potential.

Yeah, maybe you should buy a pixel then (3x the price though)?
Or maybe a OnePlus (Chinese also!). Mi A2?
What about a good ol' Samsung? My friend's s8 just got it's first update to Pie (still 'fresh' after half an year), not to mention Knox on top of locked bootloader!
I am not saying it was ok what happend, but was just a mistake with a batch of phones (also maybe that is why all this mess with 2 versions of updates for international model).
Except the pixels and essential phones, I do not think any other phone is with security patch up to Feb.

I don't understand how Google, phone manufacturers, and carriers justify not releasing security related updates in a timely manner. We should not have to wait for bloat and custom UI to be added so that we can get updates to make sure our data is safe, especially if there is a known issue.
Would you accept this on your PC or Mac? Then why do we on our phones...
Not you fat Jesus
Tired of reading about android security issues all the time. Hope they managed to fix it once and for all.
This is very sad. I hope Google ever release a patch in an accessible form.
Google patched up the latest issue in less than a day from when it was reported. Know any other companies that efficient?
If you think you can be the first programmer to release perfectly secure software, then go ahead. You'll be a very rich man.
That was a day after they were called out. Who knows how long they actual knew of issue, it doesn't make world news at the first instance of someone finding that hole.
Hackers will always find holes just saying they need to be able to plug them efficiently. You can't say that they can right now because of the mfg and carriers grip on update releases. Google has no way to bypass that if they can't fix the problem on their end.
Not you fat Jesus
I don't fault Google nearly as much as the phone manufacturers and carriers, evidence by Nexus line of phones and their updates, but Google bought into this distribution structure and it wont change with out them forcing some changes.
Maybe they force each carrier to offer a Nexus line of phone for those of us that want security and patches as they become available.

They fixed it on there end tho from my understanding

If it was just up to Google we would have the update, the carriers are at fault here.
Its the carriers that take forever and a day to release the updates for their customers.
Call them and complain see what they tell you, they will give you a look similar to a deer caught in the headlights stare over the phone or put you on hold so you can talk to someone who has about as much knowledge about my SGS as my 3yo does.
Edit: YES AT&T I am talking about you !
It'd be nice if Google just sold Android phones themselves with the same price as the carrier would sell them for on or off contract.
Google for a carrier.
That is what Nexus line was suppose to be but isn't very successful when your main carrier in US is one of the smaller ones and isn't even an option due to lack of coverage for a number of potential customers

Apparently Samsung's getting ready to roll-out the announced N3 Knox improvements (consumer use vs. corporate device management) to the SGS4. One of the new Knox features allows device owners to prevent the wiping of the device in the event it's stolen. That's pretty cool. But apparently there are some pretty big security and permission changes that are being put in place to make it work based on a 9/4 SGS4 update Samsung pushed out. These are the changes from Chainfire the creator of SuperSU and Triangle Away.
SELinux enabled and set to "restrictive"
A more secure bootloader
A new warranty status indicator inside the bootloader
Inability to downgrade once the new bootloader's installed
What does it mean? The N3's locked down pretty tight and not at a carrier's direction. It's too early to say what the long-term impact will be but the devs are working on getting the flexibility that's gone back.

I hope someone is going to figure it out. Im stuck with Verizon so if i buy it i don't have the option to buy it unlocked. But I'm not going to knowingly buy a locked device and then whine and complain about not being able to unlock it. Not being unlocked could be a deal breaker for me.

i already preordered mine out of contract. This is really something that concerns me. Coming from the note 1 I really only care about the screen size/ quality/ camera/ and snapdragon 800. i got 15 days to return and this might be the reason why. I find flashing to be fun.(phones and self=) 21 days of pondering after being pretty dam sure on next phone.

I don't know for sure if Samsung has said one way or the other, but from a production standpoint, it would be easier to include it on all phones.
My main concern is that with a locked bootloader, adding a custom recovery is much more difficult. I prefer being able to create my own phone backups and use them as-needed. Android's stock recovery hasn't changed since at least the OG Droid, and therefore lacks this ability. Otherwise, my personal reasons for wanting to flash have significantly reduced since my first Android device.

Samsung KNOX & Find My Mobile
The new GALAXY Note 3 comes with enhanced privacy and security protection provided by Samsung KNOX. Users can activate Samsung KNOX with ease which allows them to run and store security-sensitive applications and data inside a protected execution environment called “container.” The security inside the container is strengthened by system-level protection of Samsung KNOX against malware and phishing attacks as well as hacking attempts on physical devices when devices are stolen or lost. For instance, important personal pictures or video can be stored in the container with no worries for data leakage due to hacking. In addition, users may choose to store enterprise applications and data such as corporate email, contacts and calendar and allow the IT department to manage the container through EAS (Exchange ActiveSync Server). These features make the GALAXY Note 3 an ideal device for BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device to work)
Furthermore, the GALAXY Note 3 is equipped with an improved Find My Mobile feature that allows users to disable the phone when it is stolen or lost. With the enhanced user authentication, the technology prevents stolen mobile phones from being reset to factory settings, and allows users to remotely track or erase the data from their lost or stolen mobile phones.
A user doesn't have to activate it but the hooks it needs and control over the bootloader it requires will be on every N3. The same hooks and bootloader changes were just pushed out to the SGS4 which is what has their forum up in arms. I'm guessing Knox was inert on consumer SGS4's originally because it required corporate device management s/w to enable it. Now that it's being aimed at consumers it's going to be on all Samsung's devices that can support it. The devs on the SGS4 forum are still trying to understand what the changes mean and how to work around them. It broke all Chainfire's apps (One Click Root, SuperSU, Triangle Away, Mobile Odin) so he's especially keen at addressing Knox's new "features."
Samsung had a big presence here at the Atlanta Airwatch Connect conference. They mention the new Knox capable hardware "burns in on hardware" when it is rooted and cannot be undone.
I'm not enough of a techie to ask them more specifics about how they accomplish this. But thought I would pass it on here so someone smarter than I can valid this claim.
I might just cancel my preorder if this is true.

We have been lucky with the s4 here in canada..non locked bootloader. The last at&t ota locked theirs down and they have root but thats all.now it seems the international devices are being locked down also.
I hope the CAN version of the N3 continues the no lock trend but I kind of doubt it. I planned or pre ordering but I think ill wait and see first.
I refuse to spend $800 on a device and not be able to do what I want with it.

Samsung is gonna be hurting if they shy away the regular Joe consumer to try and get enterprise customers. I would think consumers outnumber enterprise people but even if not true, Samsung won't get all thebeneterprise with apple, Microsoft and blackberry in the running also. I am hoping for an unlocked USA LTE band compatible with unlocked bootloader. My next phone needs to hold me until 64bit chips makebwaves on android and I think the note3 can do that in the meantime. The note2 probably could but I am smartphone techno nerd and the note 2 will be ancient history to me if I owned it more than 15 months.
Just thought I'd let you all know:
I have the new MH8 firmware on my S4 that has the new locked bootloader and Knox security.
I had no trouble rooting it, installing CWM Recovery and flashing CM10.2. All works fine.
The downside is that once you're on this new bootloader you cannot downgrade stock firmware using Odin.
That's the only limitation I've come across.
I can still flash any custom ROM, any custom Kernel and any custom recovery

XDA looks at Knox's impact to customization and shivers. The masses look at it as a safe and unique place to store their porn and a way of increasing the chances of getting their lost/stolen device back. We're 5% of the market and the masses are 95%. Samsung losing 5% of their sales is about equal to all the devices HTC will sell in 2013. We're opinion leaders and early adopters but we're not indispensable.
P.S. - I'm not agreeing with what Samsung's doing so please don't shoot the messenger.

As long as you don't unlock your bootloader and root the phone etc. you don't lose warranty. Which is not needed for dload, as previously stated. And even then (with re-locked bootloader) it's unclear to me if they really deny warranty. Luckily I never had to use mine
But it's understandable that you are careful. It's the same for me when I get a new phone. I put on screen protectors and cases, but now that I have mine for a year I go naked!

Oh the eternal discussion on locked bootloader...
I do really own my device, physical and software wise, luckily for me I had it unlocked for free but had I not had the chance to be one of the 200 people that got it from the test the "shady dude" here in XDA, I would definitely pay the $5 to grab it!
There's not much development for this device, in my own humble opinion, because this is a fairly new brand(HMD), resurfacing from an era before the smartphones of today(Nokia/Symbian), NOT just because of the factory locked bootloader!
Btw, you can get similar devices for a lot less money with unlocked everything!
There's a way to do it, it's up to you only to decide what's worth your coins!

@grimyhr I think you didn't get my point at all..
Fyi I had all these Nokia phones:
Older Technology:
2160 (TDMA, first Nokia I got)
6120 (TDMA) and 6180 (CDMA)
6225i (CDMA)
GSM Dumbphones:
1100 (First phone with a flashlight!)
Asha 202
GSM Symbian:
3210 (first GSM handset)
6600 (first Symbian I had back in the day)
6800 (hated that split keyboard)
5200 xpress music
Practical GSM Smartphones:
E62 and E61i (both still in use as SIP phones for their wifi and great battery stand-by time)
N97 (Still in use today as an in-car Bluetooth player(32gb internal+ 32gb on SDcard :silly: ) and NDrive when Waze on Android goes haywire w/o data connection)
N810 Internet Tablet (still in use as the media/streaming player paired to a Bluetooth speaker for BBQ and it is the only Maemo device I ever used)
All of that trouble I had compiling that list may show how I appreciate Nokia's phones and that was a dive into the past!
Nowadays people don't know how cumbersome was to handle and install apps and ringtones (lol) on their phones, but since then it all got easier (big thanks to XDA Developers!)
I meant to say that HMD/Nokia is a new brand on Android Phones. We all know how awesome Symbian was but the Nokia/Windows Mobile phones tossed all that into the trash in my opinion (Sorry WinMo supporters). We know Nokia/WinMo had great camera/media capabilities and awesome Nokia build strength but they were definitely not good app-wise.
As @kosmatyj noted, there is a small base of owners with the new HMD/Nokia brand devices and even less with their devices unlocked. That may change when the manufacturer releases their official way to unlock our phones or when someone releases a tool or tutorial in DIY fashion (check this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57752632&postcount=1). While neither of those things immediately solve our problem, the last resort is just a $5 bill.
Regarding your question over similar devices, I meant similar in processing power, not the exact type of CPU. I have the UMIDIGI Z Pro that has a ****ty stock rom, but with root and xposed I have it exactly for what I need at 1/3 of the price I've paid on my Nokia 8 TA-1004 in my country.

Paying or not paying, you will never know if its reliable. When it is a method and open here on xda there would be respect and also enough users for donations.
But it isn't.
Probably the manufacturer has something to hide or there is a leak of info howto unlock. That is also unreliable.

Yea thats why I'm on a note 10 f ds. All my American friends whine about having locked bootloader and do the same thing petition after petition and not gone nowhere. That why I buy unlocked bl now so I don't deal with it
As I said in an other thread we will recive android 11 through the note 10 lite port. they share the same exynos processor.
so it will not be an official release but it's better than nothing.
For the snapdragon variant i don't think they will get anything
The petition should be about the Samsung S9 Plus snapdragon variant getting the oem unlocked
We are getting one UI 2.5 the next month in October anyway so so after wireless dex there is nothing important coming

OK i will try to make this petition
Petition give android 28 like it's something new and we need!!!
INfact this is GOOGLE's fault, they created such STUPID idiotic OS. Normal OS can get security updates independent from manufacturer, but google made so that only manufacturer can update phones, which is STUPID. Android OS should be in-depended from manufacturers. Android 28 will be just like that

The op has valid points. These are not some $200 ~ $300 phones which are low powered to not be able to run few iterations of os. These were about $900 plus when launched. We're not talkin about 2011~2015 when phones had 1 gb ram as standard or 2gb but after 2 years the os required more hence those were not considered upgrade worthy. Now these phones have minimum 6GB at least my S9+ has and i'm sure Note also would be same or higher. Also there is enough hp in the chipset to pick up few updates. My phone got updated last night to 2.5UI and everything is so smooth and with tons of widgets on home screen updating real time there is still about 2.6gb ram available all the time and not a single stutter.
In these current times people will not upgrade $1000 plus phones every 2 years in many countries since unlike USA/EU we don't get carrier contracts. People buy upfront and would like to stick for 3 years at least .
So am totally with OP on this. We should have one more update on the os.
edit: lol just noticed my Signature. Shows when I was last active on this site. After S4, had Note 4, S7 edge and now S9 +. None after S4 were rooted or tampered with since the os was good enough and smooth enough.
As said before. They owe us no updates. We buy them as is. Its generosity that they give what they do. They are not obligated to do any more after sales other than warranties
