Pixel 2 lag and freezes? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Does anyone else know how to solve this ?

Have you got any more info? When did it start? App you installed recently that might be responsible? Tried the usual restart/clear cache/factory reset?

I tried to do a factory reset but the lag still occured. When is Google going to release the next update ? The 1st of next month ?

Since the first week of owning (got in on the Verizon pre-orders), my pixel 2 will occasionally stall. It pauses for a few seconds and then resumes. Once or twice I get a system ui has stopped message, but typically not. It is most noticeable when scrolling, either in the news feed or Google Now or my texting app. But I've seen it while toggling a setting in the notification shade.
Updating to the Dec and then January update didn't help it. Unlocking 3 wks ago and installing a new kernel didn't help.
Is this similar to what you've experienced?

Yes and I also find the camera to be very unstable. For example, when I take a picture and tried to zoom in, it doesn't do anything. I have to double tap and then I am able to pinch the screen

All this sounds extremely uncharacteristic if this is a stock / unrooted Pixel 2.

I've noticed that facebook and facebook messenger not only consume tons of battery, but they are usually the culprits of hard stalls.

if it persists after the factory reset, I'd try to reflash a stock image if you know how to do this. Factory reset wipes everything and starts from scratch from the stock firmware, either that or just hang tight as the next update is coming soon for Feb. I'd reflash the new Feb image. Probably just a bug. Mine lately has also been tripping out, not lagging, but just acting random like brightness toggling, etc......... they appear to be bugs.

Not sure generally it's within the first 5 days of the month. Personally I'd like to see it this Fri the 2nd but it could not be released until next Monday the 5th which seems more probable.

If it were a bug it would be happening to everyone. Very very doubtful that Feb update would do anything for you since it's not a common issue. Id do what has been suggested and reflash the stock image.

Step one apply factory image, step 2 factory reset. Don't install any apps and check for issues, if it still has issues exchange for a different device. If it has no issues, it is an app or mod.

Does your camera freeze up?

i need to know if this a hardware issue or software. every 2 days or so my camera wont start . i close everything running and it just freezes up on me. i have nothing crazy installed jsut root, tibu, chase, android game, flashlight. thats it ! i will click the camera icon ill see the screen shake for a second and just go back to home screenl. also sometimes i click the multi task button and clear everything out when i press home it has to load all my widgets again.. this phone is werid...
i bought it online at radioshak for 50 bucks do you guys think i can get a new one in store or do they deal with online only
I had this happen to me twice in a week of use. I'm wondering if another app is not releasing the camera from it's use. I haven't been killing the camera app after use, so maybe it has an issue being open for long.
Other apps that use the camera I may have had open are Instagram, Facebook, Gallery.

same. its either gallery or instagram, hmmm
i had this issue since i bought the phone. never figured it out. a couple of days ago, the camera just stopped working altogether. it won't start most of the time. when it does start, the image is dark and very distorted. i tried to upgrade from 1.73 to 1.85 and didnt solve the issue. i did a factory reset and it didn't solve the issue. so earlier today, i ended up just exchanging it with a new phone.
Happening to me as we speak!
Made a quick, nasally sounding video.

- Instagram is still able to use the camera.
- If I close them all in multitasking, it doesn't fix it.
- Force stopping Instagram and/or the Camera app doesn't solve it, I have to reboot the phone.
EDIT:
Fast boot is off on my device.

damn so you think it is hardware related ? i bought the phone may 9th it arrived to my house , am i still under warrenty or what is radioshak 30 days hmm
Happens to mine too, about 4 times already. Have to restart the phone to get it to work again. Had the phone for about a month. If the update fixes this and other problems this phone will be perfect.

Try a factory reset. If this doesn't solve the issue, I'd take it back. I've never had any such issues on 1.73, 1.82 or 1.85. I'm inclined to think its either a software issue (like an installed app interfering, as one reply suggested) that a factory reset may clear up, or its a hardware issue.

well, i won't say that your problem was the same as mine but i think mine was definitely a hardware problem. i experienced the problem on 1.73 and 1.85, rooted and unrooted, locked and unlocked, and even after a factory reset. luckily the camera just complete crapped out before my 30-day was up so it was easy to justify the exchange at the at&t store.

Video exactly depicts what happens to me. I will try to open the camera app and it just flashes and kicks me out. I've tried all sorts of things to alleviate the problem but the only solution I've found is restarting the phone. Pretty annoying....
The display HOX at the AT&T store had the same issue. I'm assuming this is software related but who knows
this happened the first week I had the phone. When I updated it to 1.82 the issue went away so I'm assuming it was software

Well if it was a software issue, factory reset is worth a try. However if its something that needs to be fixed in a future update (a bug) then going back to factory shouldn't help. And thats why the OP had another thread about how to update.
Crizthakidd, have you tried other camera apps from google play? I know you said you were going to. How did that go, if you did? Obviously if there's a software issue, even if factory reset doesn't fix it, xda can. That is, root, unlock, install a newer custom rom.
I had this problem on 1.72, and other apps were still ok using the camera. I made a quick video of it happening.

However I am rooted and doing mods so I am restarting more often to check my work.

I'm surprised you said you don't see any improvement in performance because I certainly did.. I'm even getting between 8 and 11 hours of SOT whereas before I was only getting around 4 to 6 so it literally doubled it.. It may also be because I've got a lot of things disabled and I did an entire clean installation of the new firmware because I factory reset right after flashing it and then disabled/ removed a lot of junk and so far it's working better than any of the other ones I've tried!!
I happened to factory reset just before I knew of any new update. Now that I have the update, should I do it again?

Yes, it is always best to reset after a update.
Have used the update for a couple days now without doing a reset and so far it is better than the last update with a reset with performance and battery life, very impressive. I didn't disable any services/packages, only the disabling of apps which the UI allows by dragging/dropping from the app drawer since my last reset. This helps immensely with the ability to do dirty updates and staying at near peak performance, just an FYI.
May do a full reset this weekend just to be able to start fresh and test, but may not if the current state of my phone stays the same.

Yes when I said "clean installation" I meant factory reset. Sorry about that. I did the factory reset after I installed the update. Don't do it before that, it's pointless.

When you guys reset, do you use the most recent copy or install from scratch? I see 3 choices, last 3 days, last 30 days, or install a fresh copy. I used the last 3 days choice.
All it does is install your apps so you don't have to pick them out once at a time.
Thanks

I start from scratch.. I don't let it install anything unless I manually tap it to do it so before I turn on my WiFi I set the Google play store and the Galaxy apps to not auto update so it doesn't start updating everything right away.

You know, I think its possible to go way overboard on the whole reset after every update thing. Remember that now that Samsung is pushing the monthly Android security patches on a more or less consistent basis, you are going to be getting an update almost every month. Do you really want to be resetting that often? Up to you but that's not for me. I did do a reset when it went from 5.x to 6.x but I don't reset just for the monthly updates. I haven't had any problems either. I may do a "just because" reset after six months or so, but I think if you are doing this for every single update its going to get old really fast.

Can you elaborate for the people that it takes longer than 5-10 minutes to re-setup? Are you using a backup program (which one) to use keep your data settings? I know some programs will allow you to backup the data/settings so you don't have to start from scratch but not all allow you to do this. I'm just throwing this out there. I don't need it because I like to reset mine back up... Makes it feel as I have a new phone.
anyone have the Tar Ball for this update? I have a Note 5 in an endless bootloop and SamMobile takes more than two hours to down load. The bootloop is so bad that you cannot get into recovery, the hardware power down does not allow factory reset or power off and the only one that seems to work is to odin the clean software.
Thanks.

Freezing - Not sure if random

So since about 2 days ago the phone just start freezing. Sometimes it just restarted randomly, but mainly freezing at least every 5 minutes. The power button alone wouldn't turn it off no matter how long I held it. Always have to use Pwr+Vol Down to reboot.
I put up with it because I've been busy, but finally tried wiping cache - no profit. Tried safe mode - no profit. Factory reset- negative profit. After the reset it just seems to restart a bit more often but in general it freezes less, making the timing seem even more random.
This happened when I first got it (used). It was restarting due to the fresh 7.0 update. So a factory reset fixed it and it was smooth sailing for like 3 months or something. I know there was a minor system update a few days ago but those dont usually call for a factory reset. I tried it anyway and it just didnt work. I had actually even tried uninstalling all the app updates from the night before it started happening. but safe mode couldn't even fix the problem so I guess that was moot.
Software version: G920VVRS4DQE1

Mainly I'd like to know if Im alone. A fix would be great but I'm hoping it's not specific to my device. If it's a hardware issue I'm gonna give it a swift toss down the stairs and maybe deliver a nasty curb stomp to it right afterward.
Any advice?
I'm running into the same exact issue. Same build, and am running out of ideas.

Good to know its not just me. Did it start after a recent update for you also? That would give me hope that its not faulty hardware. Maybe just a bad update.

Gonna go ahead and revive this. It seems to work fine when the sim card is out. I recommend you see if it's the same with you. I've charged it up before work multiple times before work days and come home from to see that it never restarted. I was able to test this using the fingerprint feature; it isn't asking me to use pattern like it does after boot.
No one else is chiming in but, since we're both on Verizon, I'm having a feeling that it's directly related to the SIM/carrier.

Pixel Oreo - Major issues with Calls

I just updated to Oreo via OTA and the phone worked great for a day. After that, I couldn't make calls and people couldn't call me. My phone would randomly reboot or get stuck on the G logo.
I wiped and reinstalled Oreo, and now the same thing is happening. Plus I see this weird 'colourful static' after trying to make a call, before my phone just shuts off. I tried safe mode and the same thing happens.
Currently in an urgent situation where I need my phone to be functioning, hoping someone here can help.
Thanks
I am having exactly the same issues since the Oreo OTA. If I reboot the phone, the issues go away for a while, but eventually it's back to problems where I'm unable to make/receive calls, screen is flickering (even that colored static you mentioned), lag when unlocking the phone, etc.
Have you found out anything?

I am sorry to hear that man! I hope you/google figures it out.... may be try flashing the factory image manually.
I'm having the same issues and verizon Chat support told me they are having issues with the OS upgrade and the Pixel. Did the factory reset and everything else. Replacement phone coming now. If it's the Oreo OS, I bet it's going to have the same problem... This is a major problem, as I am a single Dad and have a long drive to get my daughter - do they really want me to text while I drive instead of calling?? This is Day 5 of this issue and 4 trips to their stores.... ugh. Suggestions?
Update
Just wanted to post an update. After factory resetting a few times the problem persisted. I sent it back to my wireless carrier and they sent it to Google. In the meantime I had a loaner phone from my carrier. Google sent back a refirb (it was practically new with new screen and camera), and the issue hasn't come back in the new phone. My suggestion is to send back to your carrier to get a replacement. Good luck!
i am on stock too (from google store), oreo update and have exactly the same problem, it also occurs with "ok google".
after reboot, calls and "Ok google" work perfect so the mic is okay. but sooon after it just stops working and i got randoom reboots.
same is happening in "safe mode"
i did factory reset via android and id did not help.
now i tried a factory reset via boot menu and will check it out.

UI Reboot Issue

I have been facing this issue since yesterday. I am running OB7 with stock kernel. The phone's screen suddenly turns black and gives the lockscreen password screen as if the phone has rebooted and all the apps are killed.
Anybody has any solution or facing this?
Hey, actually using last OOS beta 7, facing the same issue since at least ytd.
Glad to see that i'm not alone
I have had that a couple times since the release of 9.0 and with 9.02 both Official, not OB. I try to reboot my phone every 2 or 3 days and sometimes I forget and it seems to happen if my phones up time is above 6 or 7 days.
I just wiped cache, will let u know if it worked or not
OnePlus 6 Rebooting Apps, Black Screen
My partner got her OnePlus 6 brand new one week ago, and just tonight it started experiencing the same problems as the OP described. According to her she updated to the latest OS software on day one, and it all worked as it should for the past six days until a couple of hours ago. It does that reboot-like thing about 8 times an hour right now. We're on the fence on if we should return it to the online retailer as we're on the last day. Reformatting to factory settings didn't fix anything. Hoping someone finds a solution.
Edit: It's a stock OnePlus 6 Mirror Black phone & operating system OOS 9.0.2, using common social networking apps. I just joined this forum and this is my first post.
Weird...
Actually, 0 reboot since the cache wiped

Hope that continues to work. As for us, we tried wiping the cache an hour ago. It didn't help in our situation. It's currently "rebooting" so much, it's unusable.

Had the same issue since yesterday
Only solution i found was to remove google and whatsapp from beta and to do a hard reset.
Reset solved my problem
Things i tried before reset-
1)Settings reset
2)clear cache
3)restart
Only solution was a reset without erasing internal.
Hope y'all come to the same result.
Still ni reboots since i wipe the cache, looks like it was enough for me... Hope it will
Hard resetting doesn't work in our case. As a last resort, I'm currently trying a OxygenOS ROM downgrade, or if I can't do that, upgrading to Open Beta 7. The latter of which I'm trying, but the phone restarts mid-update constantly. Not even safe mode stops the rebooting during the update.
Let us know if it worked,
Actually had 2 reboots since ystd cache wiped

We had to return the OnePlus 6 before today ended because of the small 7 day store warranty (living in the Philippines). After I couldn't even install the ROMs in Safe Mode because of restarts every minute now, there didn't seem to be anything I could do. Hoping the next OnePlus 6 we get in three weeks doesn't have this issue.
I've had such issues with OB8 & OB9, probably with OB7 as well - can't remember.
Wiped cached many times, changed kernel and so on.
Actually, OB8 was a fresh install as well.
UPDATE
I reverted back to 5.1.11 and then updated to 9.0.2, so far so good. I'll post updates in the next few days.
