So.. after some tinkering (and massaging) I got the back cover off of my Captivate and was able to snap some pics of the innards for your viewing pleasure.
It's very similar to the standard Galaxy S, but some of the chips are laid out a bit differently, also, I apologize for the substandard picture quality, the only thing I have available to take pictures is a Blackberry Storm2 with an led flash.

That is (almost) as far as you can go. Theres one more PCB thats actually attached to the screen. Other than that, that main board and the sim/sd card board that sits on top of it are all thats there.
Edit: Here are some better pictures I was able to take this morning, unfortunately EVERY single picture I tried to take of the small Broadcom chip turned out like crap, or you could not see the writing on the chip. I could not read it myself, as the writing on the chip is extremely tiny, and I don't have a magnifying glass.

I just need a few more photos of the "in between" steps to give a better idea of what needs to be disconnected and how to get the back cover off.
And then there's the whole write up thing. -- Question about that, should I do a new "tear down" thread, I'll get a bit more in depth this time as well, I'll get all the chip numbers down (I found a magnifying glass!) so we can better cross reference what hardware we have in comparison to the Galaxy S i9000.
Will probably be a day or two until I can get it up, maybe longer depending on the write up.

I spilled a bit of an "adult beverage" on my Captivate last nite. Dang cat... Nothing went wrong w/the phone... save for the power button & the volume rocker... They were a bit... sticky.
I was able to get them cleaned up a bit using a razor blade & some alcohol wipes, but I'd love to be able to fully clean everything by disassembling the phone. I removed the 4 screws in the back beneath the battery cover, but got nowhere...
Can someone confirm if the fm radio chip is there?

There are actually 6 screws. Two are hidden underneath the sliding latch for the battery door.

Thats one of the purposes of tearing the phone down, I'm hoping to answer that question, or at least give enough people enough information to find out.

I don't know, it would definitely take someone much more skilled than I to fit the Front camera in.
The layout on the top is a tiny bit different, and it would require some changes to that as well as making space above the screen on the opposite side for the camera.
So, definitely NOT an easy job, if it is even possible.
if you look at that video of the teardown of a galaxy S i9000, it looks like the FFC is part of the rear facing camera module

at 2:59 in the video the camera is taken out, and at 3:07 she turns it over and you can see the front facing camera - does your rear facing camera look different (except for the obvious, missing that small black square with the FFC)?
if it's not different, except for the missing ft camera, i suspect these are all modular components so sammy could assemble them, as needed, to a customer's specs - which means, if someone can source that correct module w/ffc, and rip the driver and software for it from the i9000, that it'd be possible
The camera is identical, minutes the front facing piece, if course. The connection to the main board is the same as well.

My research shows that this chip does not do anything with FM radio so that is quite disappointing. Dammit AT&T! Always got gotta crap up a great phone. So now we don't get FM radio and we don't get the FFC.
if its the same camera module minus the FFC, im sure we will find some junk galaxys on ebay for parts soon enough, sum1 will develop a new front for us hopefully, pop in the new camera, get the ROM for it to work, and hope it can work. i am by no way an engineer or anything technically, so im not saying its plausable, just saying it could work if some1 knew how to do it.

This chip is the broadcom gps. He replied to the larryccf question.
So, I hope fm radio is here.

tks - it may be sammy did use a different gps chipset in the captivate
and btw, macro will magnify - take a high res shot, then open on your pc, depending on how hi res, i've had them open the picture in 25 X 22" or so sizes
and you can see mosquito footprints - had an Omega, a high end one that had a serial number on the backside way too small to read even with a 6X magnifier - had to have been laser etched
used a macro shot to read it - no joke

ok so i've searched all over the place and all i see is the actual camera unit for sale. i can't find the outside piece thats on the case (the glass piece). mine is all scratched up and my pics look like ****. all blurry and fuzzy looking. i'd like to replace it, but can't find that piece. any help would be appreciated. thank you guys.

Thanks, mine needs this too. Odd since I've kept this thing in a soft cloth or leather case with felt padding on the inside the whole time...

thanks for the links. i actually saw these when i searched the web. i was hoping to only get that small glass piece that covers the camera instead of buying the whole back cover. not sure if it actually comes like that, but if anyone else has any info on it that would be great.

From the links, it looks like it's built into the back casing. Kinda makes sense though since it would have to be pressfit on I guess.

Mine too!
I have had the unfortunate results like yourselves. However what I did serves me well enough.
I took a screen protector and cut a small square. Placing that over the camera has removed the haze from my pictures.

hmmmm kind of serves you right for keeping your phone unprotected in a pocket with keys or lose change.
next time round get a case/pouch mine covers my entire phone protecting from both scratches and impact damage.
BTW the DZ cam is pretty crappy and blurry any way ........ even by pinhole lens phone cam standards so don't expect miracles once replaced.

Umm, no. My Z takes pretty good photos. Of course very low light situations will result in longer shutter time, and increased chances for blur due to camera or the subject moving. But in most conditions good photos are very possible, and mostly a matter of technique and experience. Manually adjusting ISO, white balance, taking advantage of what light is present, and bracing the camera can all have major impact on the quality of the photo, even in lower light situations. Moral of the story your problem is likely more the user, and not the equipment. I don't mean that in a pejorative way. But while not the best camera phone around, good photos are possible with the Z, with the proper technique.
I used a mild lens restorer on mine fixed her right up. Perfect pictures again

No offence bro but considering the fact i was a professional photographer for 6 years straight and still do some work now as a pro photographer.
I have no "problems" with photographic "technique"
Maybe my ideas of 'clear' and 'sharp' digital images is a little more informed and nuanced than yours. But compared to a few other 5mp phone cameras IMHO the Desire Z is on average at best and poor if you want to be critical.

Hard to take your comment of "no offence" seriously, as you are bragging about your photog experience and how much "more informed" you are than me (no basis for any such claim). Why not keep it to a technical discussion, instead of boasting about how awesome you are, "bro"?
Largely comes down to expectations and opinion. Camera phones are largely for spur-of the moment snapshots (not serious photography). For this, the Desire Z is just fine. We are also talking about a phone that is a year and a half old. In its time, its camera was much better (especially low light) than the iPhone iteration of the time (3GS). Were there camera phones at the time that were a bit better, yes, but not drastically. More recent phones have significantly better cameras, and the One X looks to blow away most the competition (except the Nokia Pureview's monster 41 MP camera). But seeing as every other spec on smartphones has come a long way in the past year and a half, its not really fair to compare the Z to newer phones.
Also, seeing as the OP is just looking to restore his present technology to a previous condition, calling it "crappy and blurry" doesn't really help him out at all.
Agree with previous poster, seriously if you want good pics you get an slr or dedicated rig. Most people don't carry that around. For what it is the camera on this phone is very good to good enough depending who you ask and their expectations. Sure beats carrying around a point and shoot or slr multi lens combo. Like I told the OP if your considering getting a new back then try cleaning it up with a mild abrasive like a lens restorer, CD scratch remover something of that nature. I used the stuff for headlights it was like 5 bucks. Don't go crazy I used super minimal pressure and a soft paper towel and it took all of 30 seconds to clear up no joke. Good as new and I haven't had to do it again. In my case it was the anti-reflective coating in the glass, since it was shot who cares right? Came off and pics are sharp again. In the future if I actually scratch it I'll probably buy a replacement but that did it for me. Just my 2 cents.
I had the same problem as you, but I managed to fix it using a polish dedicated to car headlights.

I'm not seeing any (of what I consider) reputable sites/leakers that have confirmed. Most places say January/Feb. I have a hard time believing that VZW will be one of the 1st to release it... they usually take forever to release major OTAs compared to other carriers.

Totally agree, the grammar in the article was horrible. When I found the article, I was really excited hoping that Verizon threw us a bone. Then, I surfed other more reputable sites and not a peep about an upgrade. Also, it is my experience that Verizon is often a little slower than other carriers on major upgrades. Perhaps they are confused with the recent Marshmallow upgrade for the G3. At any rate, thought I'd check with others and see if they had received the update. Looks like we'll be waiting a little while longer.:laugh:
I see that they have confirmed 100000 flips. 28 flips per day for 5 years. The problem is, I'm pretty sure that we're going to use more than 28 flips a day e.g. face unlock, manual flip control, Instagram stories, video calls, taking multiple front video clips (vloggers) etc. I'm a bit worried about it failing in 2 years. So would it be durable enough for the long run?
Only way to find out is waiting 2 years I guess, it's hard to judge. In case Asus messes things up and they start to break everywhere then that would not only hurt Asus's image but also overal all motor controlled camera's.
I personally think it would be fine, perhaps a iFixit rating would soften the blow if they would deem it easy to repair.
That would likely suggest it has ~10% chance of failure after 100,000 flips, and very, very few people would average more than 25 a day over 2 years.
The mech looks well designed, to me.
However if you drop your phone a lot, this probably isn't the device for you.
I'm really not worried at all.
I think the YouTuber JerryRigEverything is gonna do a test on the durability of the camera in the next few weeks, since he's already pre-ordered it.
That being said, it should last for 2-3 years when most users would be onto another phone, and it doesn't seem like it will break anytime soon.

I already spotted a video on youtube of a guy having one where the camera would not return flat properly already, but it was in spanish so hard to understand.
I'm more worried about dust, lint, and other flotsam and jetsam getting behind, beneath, and alongside the mechanism thereby causing it to gunk up and either not open, or not close properly. I'll stick with my OnePlus 6 non-T version.

True, the OnePlus 7 pro has a rubber ring around the base of the pop up camera. The zenfone 6 doesnt have any kind of water protection. So that might be an issue.

Until we see a tear-down, I wouldn't be so sure that there isn't any protection. I've heard it's at least splash resistant which I think most models are these days. One thing is not having IP certification but you don't need that to make rudimentary rubber seals.
Of course it'll be difficult to do especially with how much of it is exposed. It's definitely easier for the 7 Pro because pretty much all of it is internal.

We all have to wait for a proper teardown of zenfone 6.
But I am sure the liquid cool metal stepper motors are quite durable.
Company claims 28 selfies everyday for 5 years.
We'll have to wait a little until we get to know how reliable is the flip camera. But it feels reliable and strong from what I've seen so far

my camera motor failed in 6 weeks. Sent it in for repair and looks like they are waiting on parts...
As far durability is there but problem is dust accumulation and hinge is getting loose (not getting fully retract).
I was skeptical about the durability but so far camera is sturdy.

After almost seven months of operation, I see absolutely no difference from how it worked the first day.
I got my phone on 5July 2019 and till date it's working flawlessly. Even it once fell into road side drain and was fully sunk in water for about 8-10sec but it runs buttery smooth and thus the camera.
IMO this phone is just superb and much more better than Chinese ****s like Vivo, OP, Oppo, Xiaomi etc
Samsung can only hope this is an isolated instanceļ¼

just pulled my S-pen out to smell it ----- darn, it does smell burned. There are no signs to the coating or anything, but the smell is very much of burned resin. I think these are all black, right? wonder what one with a lighter color looks like.
Never felt that mine was warm when I pulled it out so far though. Could be a manufacturing issue too and not related to heating while in the phone. Need somebody who receives it new to confirm.
Can confirm my pen has the acrid odor. It and the phone are cool to the touch. Not losing any sleep over it.
Note8 and Note9 also had the funny SPen smell...

I'm no expert in fire forensics. Samsung stated in the article it was caused by an "external source" but how did they make that determination and what was the external source? They offered no evidence besides their general statement. Plus is there anyone naive enough to think Samsung wouldn't look to point it's finger at anything besides themselves? After reviewing the photos it sure looks as though the device blew up and caught fire. The good news is it doesn't look to be a widespread issue.
That nightstand didn't inspire me with confidence that there wasn't an external source, either.
The most convincing photo for me that the device caused the fire is this one. The orange colorization on back of the device doesn't look to be caused by an external source, it looks as though the heat emanated from the inside of the phone.
That phone looks like it went through hell before it was ever exposed to an ignition source or was an ignition source.
Take a good look at the camera array and also the 2 images of the phone. Things aren't adding up for me.
Also far more fire damage in the drawer compared to the top where the phone was located. Could have been a vape pen in the drawer that ignited the whole works.
Looks a lot like possible fraud intent.
Plus, the side that supposedly caught fire is the SPen slot? There's a wire (charging cable?) in the photo there too, if the phone wasn't on charge, was something else? To me, the phone isn't damaged enough for it to have been the source of combustion - but I'm no forensic expert!
I don't have a UK S22 Ultra (mine's an HK import) but I thought Samsung stopped printing the regulatory text on the back with the S9 / Note9?

I just read this thread and it might hold some truth. My S-Pen is 'melted' possibly due to heat generated while charging. The phone had got really warm (about 40-42C) but I never cared as I charge only till 85%. I did not use the pen for a couple of days and when I try to remove it, I was in for a surprise. It got stuck inside the housing and I had to use a 3M tape to remove it. Samsung refuses to replace it here in India and charges $50 for replacement.

So what was Samsung's excuse for not covering this under warranty? They used to be pretty consistent but we're seeing more and more they're refusing to accept responsibility for obvious defects.
Probably because they don't see how 40 odd degrees would melt an S Pen?

They said Spen is an accessory and wont be covered under warranty. I do not believe this at all and have escalated the issue to their higher ups.
