Orbic Wonder Dev Thread - Miscellaneous Android Development

EDIT: A rooted boot image and dirty port of TWRP recovery are now available. Dev work shall commence

Would love to get another Rom, not much customizations on the basic one. There is some lags, but I can't see alot of bloatware.
For $199 it's a pretty good phone. Had a hassle on getting a gel case for it though.
I bought it to use with my own mvno.
So far so good

Hey there. Picked up the phone and here's my impressions:
Build Quality / Look and Feel:
Admittedly, I decided to pick up this phone after I fell in love with the looks of it. It has a great thin, flat, and boxy look that I'm drawn to. After picking one up, I'm still inspecting it and enjoying it's design. Admittedly, the back of the phone appears to borrow quite a bit from Apple's designs.
When I first held the phone, it felt slightly cheap coming from a Moto E4+ which manages to feel quite premium with an all metal exterior and quite a bit of heft. Alternatively, the orbic felt cheap moreso because how light it was, which is arguably a positive trait.
The thin, flat, boxy look reminds me of some of the Nokia Lumia devices from a few years back.
Display:
Overall, the 1080p display is impressive. The colors seem very natural when compared to the highly saturated amoled displays but some prefer that. In this instance, it appears pretty impressive when considering the price tag.
Performance & Sound:
The octo-core processor is quite impressive in switching between apps and web page loading. I've had a remarkably smooth experience scrolling through the web and transitioning between apps.
The Android 7.1 OS is essentially as pure as it comes, with no bloatware to speak of and no visible Android skinning. This feels like a snappy solid Nexus/Pixel/Android One device despite the fact that it is not one.
Not sure if this belongs here, but the vibration seems somewhat weaker than expected.
In regards to sound, this is the biggest area where the phone shows it's price tag. While the sounds are crisp and clear, the volume is quite low and somewhat tinny at higher volumes. Fortunately, my phone is almost always on vibrate and paired with an Android Wear watch as well so I don't mind this much.
Battery:
The overall battery performance is quite impressive. The standby drain is remarkable slow and can last you into a good portion of a second day with ease in most cases. I forgot to charge my phone one day this weekend (long night, whiskey was involved) and woke up with about 39% left. I used the phone for about 5-6 more hours with considerable use before I grabbed a charge at about 19%.
Camera:
This is perhaps the most surprisingly impressive area for me so far. The Moto E4+ leaves quite a bit to be desired, but this phone seems to really impress in good lighting. The low lighting pictures are okay, but I'd say they outperform the Moto E line by quite a bit still and still carry a good price tag to boot.
I tried to attach photos as an example but it won't allow me to.
Conclusion:
Overall I'm really impressed with the phone and still having trouble putting it down after about 4 days of use. The camera has performed fantastically, the battery life is great (likely due partially to pure Android), and the performance is very snappy for a $199 ($179 at BB right now) phone.
My only worry is how little I see on the web about this phone as I think it deserves quite a bit of credit.

I, actually own this phone, also its not a mediatek, or mine isn't.
Snapdragon 430 processor
2GB ram
16GB storage
3000Mah Battery
5.5inch IPS Display
Stock Android
USB Type C AND a headphone Jack.
Honestly i've had little to no issues with this phone other than the bluetooth under battery stats showing some hilarious stuff.

If you want, you can PM me your google hangouts email, and we can see if it's possible to maybe crack into it and modify some software. Possibly unlock the bootloader or gain root access (or both).

Unfortunately not. When I looked at the wonder I thought it was a mediatek device, but it was actually a QCOM all along. I could've sworn the demo model I looked at a while ago had a mediatek in it.
But yeah, if this isn't a mediatek this won't be going anywhere anytime soon unfortunately.

is this not possible with TWRP?
I want to purchase the Orbic Wonder but I need to have root access in order for it to be a worthwhile investment

We can't get so far as to even put TWRP on it

OH. I understand now... I guess that leaves contacting Orbic as an option.

Already tried, they said they will never unlock devices that are meant to reach consumer hands... AKA only their developers get to play around with stuff

I have one of these if I run uname: get aarch64 rev 4.
similar to one on galaxy s6 so I guess is not so bad. 3gb ram would be better. I found a case that fits the phone. ZTE blade S6 max, but have to find a good screen protector that matches the fingerprint sensor, anybody any ideas?
I am giving mine to a relative after I discovered the bootloader issue. not a bad phone I figure.

I got the wonder as a replacement device after breaking the hardware on 2 phones in 4 months. I haven't tweaked it at all as I did with other phones, but it works pretty well as it comes with no bloatware, with all things considered. Would love to hear if someone roots theirs though. Would you mind getting CPU-Z and posting the specs of the SoC and CPU?

Specs for the Orbic Wonder. Currently have a client using one on Red Pocket Verizon.

Orbic Wonder
So I bought this phone a few weeks ago. So far I am impressed, particularly with its price point.
There is a post about the sound/speaker not being loud enough and I agree. I also agree with the quality of the camera.
The biggest issue I have is with the screen sensitivity when I am on the phone. If my ear or cheek touch the screen it starts activating things. For example, if I have a notification that I have a voicemail, when I am talking on the phone some part of my face will touch the screen, pull down the notifications, hit the notification for voicemail and then try to access my voicemail by putting the current call on hold and connecting to voicemail. Drives me nuts....anything on the screen I brush up against will launch.
I've looked for screen sensitivity settings (which I have seen on previous phones I've owned) and don't see anything related. Of course I could be missing it.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas of how to change this? Calling Orbic didn't do any good....they are going to "forward it" and who knows if that will ever get a response.
So if you have thoughts - a setting on the phone or a 3rd part app, please let me know!!!
Otherwise, I quite like this phone!
Thanks!

I've contact Orbic a couple times about questions I've had and haven't gotten much in the way of what I'd call answers. Were they able to help you?

Do you happen to have the firmware for this or could you dump it for me?I have aquired one of these Orbic Wonder RC555L phones but the previous owner did something to cause it to bootloop when i attempt to start it / put it in recovery or other modes. The only thing I can do is access Fastboot and Qualcomm 9008 mode which is GOOD i at least have FB of all things. I'm not sure what I should use to dump everything myself. My phone workstation here has limited software and hardware connected for the time being.
If you or anyone else could help me locate this firmware whether online or a dump of it that would be great! So far my extensive 2 day research has turned up nothing.
BTW: There is numerous vulnerabilities for this phone, some potentially useful for a root method. Bootloader is unlockable and i think it should be relatively easy to come up with something. I would be willing to use my device as a donor and help out if anyone is interested in achieving root and creating TWRP and eventually a custom Rom.
Just post and get ahold of me on here or email me at noidodroid AT gmail DOT com.

I do have a new method we can try for bootloader unlocking. I haven't replied to this thread in a long time because I had run out of ideas, but as of recently I now have one more trick I want to try. If you, or anyone reading this with this phone, wants to try some stuff out send me a PM. I'll get you in a telegram group

New Phone coming to Boost Mobile MNVO of Sprint USA. It features 3.5 inch display or 3.2 inch. It is running Froyo. SD Card slot up to 32gb, no information so far on card that comes with device. 3.2mp camera (no idea if it has flash)
No actual information on processor but I'm going to assume it's an arm 11.
The actual phone is supposed to be announced at a Boost Mobile / Samsung event on April 5th.
I'm betting my money on $150 usd for the device.
If anything, it'll either be the qualcomm ms11 turbo, or the Samsung SC soc they've been using a lot more. I'd rather see the qualcomm one, seeing that their older SoC's suck.
Wow, that's a lot of bezel. ;;;
I currently have a myTouch 4G, but unfortunately live in a 2G T-Mobile area. Thinking of moving to another carrier, that is also cheaper. Love Android, so this little device interest me. Came here in search of CM7 rumors for this phone. I'll sit back, wait and watch.
Since I have less than 8 posts here, I am not able to provide the Engadget link for this phone, which says: 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 2 megapixel camera, $180.
Beautiful, like everyone in the Samsung part.
Now let's see how this, in terms of internal characteristics.
Stay away, Blue Deathstar!
Boost is starting to give the customers what they want, i already have an android device on boost but Im thinking about getting this phone on a second line or give to my wife, is any rom cookers thinking about messing around with tricking out a rom for this one cause beleive me probally %50 of the boostmobile customers are gonna be all over this one! Its android baby!
I have my eye on this one knowing now that T-Mobile is about to become AT&T-mobile. I considered Boost for the $50/month unlimited plan which is a sweet deal, but at the time I was making my decision they didn't have any phones I was interested in owning. I'll definitely take a look at this once my contract is up, or able to be shredded due to AT&T related changes.
I've read that the Boost phones aren't as feature packed as some of the others... but with this being my first smart phone, will it matter much??
I currently have a phone that I just use for talk and txt on att's pre-paid service... so if I can get this and add internet and email for $10 less per month, that's what I wanna do. Coverage doesn't look too bad in my area... which hopefully it's not.
I'm mainly looking for something that I'd be able to tether with my Xoom and get 'net access to receive work emails and possibly transfer files via dropbox from time time when I'm on the road and not connected via wifi.
The Boost Samsung Prevail was finally released today. Will this entry level Android phone see lots of flashing love in the form of 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
Wow, that's a lot of bezel.
Picked one of these up this morning. To answer some questions:
- It only comes with a 2 gig SD card
- No Flash, samsung said its not supported due to hardware restrictions. I did try to install it, but it causes browsers to close.
- 179.99, I was told by the sprint store only the "boostmobile" branded stores have them right now, I had to hunt one down and they only had one on the shelf. Also they went on sale online this morning, and now the web page is reporting "sold out online".
- I have yet to root it, but haven't tried really hard yet either. SuperOneClick has failed for me.
That being said, it actually seems pretty snappy. It also has some weight to it, maybe because the battery is 1500mah. Quadrant results show 554, just a bit higher than the Nexus One, but below the Samsung Galaxy S.
CPU is an ARMv6, rev 5, 800mhz
Display is 320x480, but still looks really good. The biggest complaint I've been reading about is the screen size, but I'll be honest, it doesn't seem that small to me. Maybe thats because I've been using an Android loaded Vogue, and they are smaller phones.
Its also only sports a 2mp camera, but I took some pics today and they turned out better than expected.
My personal opinion is the phone is well worth 179.99.
I would like to hear more about the Prevail, and look forward to learning more as more of these get out into the field. I'm considering one of these for my first venture into the Android world. Seems like a decent deal with Boost plans, and the phone is affordable. I'm a little concerned that it may not get the kind of attention that other phones get in terms of rooting, custom ROM's, etc. I know this is something we can always customize to taste, but with the limited horsepower, I for one really like the fact that the original ROM is basically vanilla Android.
I hope many others will share their initial impressions and then their progress with mods.
@dbwelch
That was my concern as well, that it might not get a ton of attention as currently the prevail is only for boost mobile.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Vogue on boost, and I noticed some of the rom developers were Boost Customers, so there is hope. At the very least it would be nice to see someone root the thing.
Awesome, just for me!
I have a prevail and i must say...its better than advertised.
The screen is small but is more than functional. The small
keyboard is not an issue as you have swype, android and a
few that can be dowloaded from the market for free. I like
the fact that it comes with froyo stripped of all that
manufacturer bs...no sense or touch wiz to clutter it up.
It's well worth the $179 price tag.
i hope this phone picks up.
i got it yesterday for my girlfriend after hunting it for like 3 hours.
i wasnt expecting much, i mean 215 after everything shouldn't give you much, but i was wrong.
the screen is really nice and responsive, the camera is eh, but come on, is snappy, and even better with adw launcher in it, boost 3g network down here is surprisingly good, browser experience is just nice, multitouch support and all the good stuff, yeah it lacks of flash, but im sure it can be enabled, the processor is not that bad, and with customs kernels and stuff, and little oc the phone should kick some ass and then some, i mean it already does. oh and sometimes it lags, but is minimum, even my g2 lags at times.
for 215 total is a great deal, and with cyanogen, or any nice custom rom this phone would be something just awesome. i really wish this phone takes off and devs look at it, because is worth it, yeah for the price range theres the lg for virgin, but you can't go wrong if you have boost with this phone.
again, i hope this phone takes off and devs and custom goodness comes afloat because is well deserved.

Hello,
I am very interested in this phone as I am looking to leave TMobile and this combination of phone Android plus the all-inclusive plan with shrinkage seems to be the best option for me. What I am wondering is has anybody opened the phone yet? I currently have a Samsung Vibrant and I had a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and would like to know if the inside components are similar? I would like to install the 4G camera (FFC mod 5mp back-facing) in this Prevail, just wondering if the ribbon/connector for the camera is the same, since the location and design seems the same.
Thanks

Even if there were some parts compatibility (which I doubt; the SGS lineup are all 4" and roughly the same dimensions) I don't think you'd find a working ROM or other setup that allowed you to use that FFC.
Will Boost port your phone number from another carrier??
I'd like to be able to keep my #, but it's not a deal breaker if they can't.....

[Q] Is this phone enough?

Hello All,
I'm looking at picking up a Maxx HD, but I had some questions about a few components from those of you who have it. My three concerns are:
1. Processor - is dual core quick enough? Quad cores are coming out now, but I'm not sure how long I can wait, probably not beyond Jan, not sure what new there will be by then.
2. Ram - is 1gb enough? See any issues maxing this out?
3. Camera - This one is important to me, I want it to take some decent pics but I've read some bad things about the pics taken from the camera on this phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, looking for at least that quality in the pictures (I know it's an older one). I've also heard that the JB leaks give a boost to the camera as well.
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

1. I was using a Galaxy Nexus for several months and that that phone was fast and smooth. The processor in the Razr HD is even faster. For speed, it really comes down to software at this point and the Razr has the closest skin to OEM. I don't see much of a difference when jumping from dual-core to quad-core unless you're crazy about benchmarks. At some point, benchmarks become meaningless - everything is so fast that the user won't notice a difference even though the scores may be substantially different.
2. My phone has been running for four days without a reboot or any task killing. I have have 239 MB free. Sure some phones have 2 GB of RAM but maybe they need it because their skins or so heavy. I don't have an issue with this phone and the 1 GB.
3. Sorry, I haven't used the camera much. I have taken two pictures and they came out nice
I wanted to add this in case it helps:
Some phones may come out that are faster UIs (like the Nexus 4) but the fact that this phone has LTE and the most amazing battery life in the market (I have the MAXX). Over the weekend I was at 27% after 53 hours off of the charger and nearly 6 hours of screen time. The fact the you can use your phone without worrying about running out of juice is priceless. Also, the phone comes with ICS out of the box. I'm running the JB and I can tell you that it's much smoother and basically all lag was eliminated with the update. The official OTA may be even better.
I got a screaming deal on the MAXX so ended up getting 2 and this is what I have found so far:
1. First thing I did was install the JB leak and it is now considerably faster. ICS really is what's holding the phone back. UI is buttery smooth.
2. Memory management is actually pretty good because the skin is pretty damn close to stock. With most stuff I use being open I have 300mb free right now.
3. The stock moto camera app sucks, the nexus 4 one is a lot better and gets rid of shutter lag completely.
I came from iPhone land and so far I am very impressed with this phone, plus the battery lasts forever.

For #3, are you saying there is a 4.2 camera replacement in the market? Or are you just comparing the the Nexus 4?
You can't always judge speed based on counting cores (http://www.tmonews.com/2012/05/editorial-why-a-snapdragon-s4-galaxy-s-iii-is-awesome/). As a previous poster said, the Galaxy Nexus is dual-core, and runs very smooth. I have the Razr HD, and there are many times when I think it runs better than my quad-core Nexus 7. This device is fast, and JB will make it faster.
I would of course prefer 2GB of memory. But it's really not a huge issue. Android will keep as much in RAM as it sees fit, and when it runs low, suspend apps to make room for the current one. What this means is that when you switch back to the suspended app, Android will restore it (assuming the app developer coded well). The end result is: More memory means apps get suspended less often, but unless you are a very heavy multitasker, you probably won't notice much of a difference at this point.
I can't speak much about the camera. I've heard some complaints, but I don't really have any. I would suggest you take some photos in the store, and see. I have a variety of third party camera apps, and am OK.
This phone has the same processors as the US version of the S3. Same GPU. Roughly the same screen. Really nice build quality. Awesome battery life.
It's a killer device.
Thanks for all the info. So in regards to the camera, are you saying that I'll get better shots with the Nexus 4 camera app? Meaning it's a software issue limiting the camera quality not hardware? That eases my nerves a bit. Thanks to both of you for the advice!

1. The processor seems more than adequate, I don't notice a difference between it and the Note 2 or DNA, they are all very smooth.
2. I didn't notice the RAM holding this phone back either, I'd say it's fine for now but it will cause problems down the road when newer OS versions come out. That's a major reason why older phones are no longer able to be upgraded (so the manufacturers claim)
3. The camera sucks, plain and simple. This is one of two reasons why I returned my MAXX HD unfortunately.
Another note:
A Best Buy employee told me that they have a 14 day return policy with no restocking fee on upgrades. They have a 30 exchange period. So you can try a phone out for bit and exchange it for another one with no penalty. If you have for more than 14 days, you're forced to upgrade and you can't return the phone (but can exchange it).
Finally, my Best Buy price matched Amazon Wireless so I got the MAXX HD for $174.99
So the consensus seems to be the camera isn't very good. How would it compare coming from an older phone? I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so my camera is a bit behind the times too, will it be worse than that? I don't want to step backwards, but not as good as some out there isn't a problem for me.
Thanks,
Tim
The camera is the only problem of this mobile.Les photos are beautiful but the autofocus is long.

I imagine the camera has to be better than my old iPhone 4 and that's all I'm looking for I guess is the same or improved. If I'm wrong here please correct me. I don't need an amazing camera as I'll use my DSLR, but I want it to be good. I don't mind trying and returning if I don't like it, the problem is that I'm on AT&T now and have to port my number to try it, then port my number back to AT&T if I go with the One X+ instead (the other phone I was considering).
Thanks,
Tim

I think the camera is actually nice when you switch the app and I came from an iPhone 4 as well. As far as porting you can always open the new line on verizon with a new number and then if you decide to keep the phone you can port your number later. That way you can get a One X+ with ATT to try out and the RAZR as well.
I will say this though that this phone does look a lot better built than the One X and even the Droid DNA but then again I have never considered HTC phones to have that great of build quality anyway.
Very good, thanks for all the info! I think I've decided, unless something new comes out in the next month, looking at getting it right after Christmas.

[Q] To former non-samsung users: Do you like your S6?

I have had Samsung products in the past and hated them. It was the software that drove me nuts. However, my X 2014 just broke and I'm in need of a new phone. It's between the G2 and S6. I know they don't even compare and the S6 would 'pimp slap' the G2 on every aspect of performance. I was eyeballing the G4, but after holding a G3 decided that the even bigger G4 would be way too large. I don't care about performance as far as being top of the benchmark lists. I DO care about a phone with a good camera, handled semi a intensive tasks, and is able to be held and used one handed. Price difference aside, do you former non Samsung users like your S6? How is the custom software scene? I don't need AOSP and don't like CM, but I'd like a way way toned down TW. What do ye say?
I am a HUGE Samsung hater. To the point I equate Samsung owners as much "tech illiterate" as iPhone users. Mostly due to them still having capacitive buttons reversed from the Android spec.
That said I bought an S6, rooted it and enabled the soft-nav. I absolutely love it.
Came to S6 from LG optimus G. Mostly chose S6 for form factor (most comfortable / 1 hand usable) of the new crop of flagships. 128gb is enough storage that I'm not concerned about lack of SD slot. Root with a few root apps gives me 95% of the features I used custom ROMs for on the LGOG. Will probably move to a custom/debloated ROM, but happy with stock for the moment. This is my second venture with Samsung - had an SGS2 and was very happy with it, though at the time Samsung pissed off a good chunk of the dev community.
The camera is spectacular. One handed use is comfortably accomplished with LMT. Battery is tolerable - better than recent LP ROMs on the LGOG, but not as good as LGOG at its peak on KK. I usually get 16-18 hours off charger with 3.5-4 hours SoT, mostly browsing/facebook/tapatalk, all background stuff turned on, but Google now disabled.
If I had it to do over again, I'd do the same thing. It's nice to be back on a device that has a large Xda community and tons of cases to choose from.
After getting an S6 I thought I would never get another samsung phone again, but with the disappointing phone from HTC this year I decided to go with the S6 from my M8. Feels ****ing great to have such an awesome camera touchwiz is toned down their is some more lag than I had on the M8 but nothing major. Love fast charging and the finger print scanner works great. I'm very happy with it.
Thanks guys. I can't believe I'm considering a Sammy product after swearing them off. For those that have rooted, what are draw backs to losing Knox? I'm not an enterprise user so that's a non issue. I heard Samsung pay may not work for tripped Knox S6's. Again, not a HUGE deal. I just remember a year or two back Samsung really sucked for development by not releasing any software needed for ROM development (kernel?).
Im coming from an Samsung Note 3 because of an good offer.
It was a nice phone but I didn't liked Samsung and thought this will be my last phone from samsung .
After seeing reviews about the M9 and having 3 LG G Flex 2 with display problems I took the s6 because it was probably the best smartphone yet. Yeah it is, I like it but the ui is not flat/minimal enough for me.
The size is a bit small for me because of an 5,7" and a 5,5" phone before

I think software navigation keys?
Not sure why people prefer the back key on the left though. It's the most used key and 90% of people are right handed so having it on the right, close to your thumb, just makes sense.

I came from the G3 and was also disappointed in the larger G4. I think you'll be perfectly happy with the S6. The only downside to this phone is the battery life for a lot of people, but I've gotten mine to average about 32+ hours per charge with 4+ hours of SoT.

There is a root method called PingPong root which doesn't trip Knox.
I had a LG G2 before my S6 and I'm completely sold on the S6. It's not only beautiful but it's also blazing fast and the camera is just stunning for a mobile phone. I'm running Nova Launcher Prime instead of TouchWiz for all those functions that I would like root for and I have also switched the back and recent buttons on the phone so that the back button is on the left, a lot more natural since I've got fairly big hands and I have to almost twist my thumb to press the button. Might even turn on software navigation buttons and just turn off these.
Prior to the S6 Edge, I've only every had one Samsung phone and it was the Galaxy Nexus which was half Google.
My original intention was to upgrade my HTC One M7 to the M9 (I skipped the M8) and promptly changed my mind to the S6 Edge when the phones were announced.
I loved my HTC One and got used to having a non removable battery or sd card slot. I do like the S6 Edge too. I would imagine it would be a similar experience if I had the standard S6 instead of the Edge given the similarities.

Because for me its easier to reach my thump over to the button than it is to pull back my thumb and reach down. Being closer does not necessarily make something easier. Also if I an holding it in landscape then the back button is on the top closer to the natural position of my thumb. Also putting the buttons up on the screen makes them an easier for me to reach then having them lower ON the phones body.
For me Soft Nav is only uncomfortable if I try to use it left handed, I am right handed however. and I find the Samsung layout completely uncomfortable to use.

Have to be rooted, it's just adding a line to build.prop.
If you're right handed the back button needs to be on the right. Lot's of alien handed people around Zero reason for righties to need the back button on the wrong side. FACT
Back to the question at hand. I like it 80%. If the screen was better it'd be perfect.
I personally think most of Duarte's design decisions suck. That guy must have acromegaly and use a tiny 3.4" phone. Before he started messing with android stuff was is a lot more accessible places for one handed use by right handed persons.
The easiest place to reach is bottom left, then bottom right, then top right and hardest of all top left.
On topic after having used the s2 back in the day and not really liking Touchwiz (good phone still though ) I actually enjoy some of Touchwiz, certainly after rooting and sorting the app drawer alphabetically

I could not agree more. The combination of eliminating the menu button, and putting the 'hamburger' in the upper left, while all these devices are moving to larger screens was the worst possible decision for one hand right handed users.
Best solution I know of is LMT. It's an awesome, highly customizable PIE launcher. Soft keys (including menu button) , app shortcuts, and a 'pointer' to reach upper left one handed for those of us with smaller hands. It's got a thread here on xda.

Well, it was made by Samsung. That's a Samsung phone. But I get your point and yeah, I've always despised the TW interface on Samsung phones belonging to my friends.
Truth be told, I don't really like it on the S6 either, even with all the talk about it being less bloaty than ever.
I'm running Nova Launcher and I've frozen whatever Samsung apps I could. I've also switched the sms and keyboard apps over to the Google ones. It doesn't get rid of TW but does lessen its impact.
Honestly though, if HTC could get their act together when it comes to cameras then I'd probably go back.

honstely, I'd be better of buying the G4. This phone is slow and battery life is below average for sure. This is coming from an experienced user and former Samsung 'Fanboy'
Hardware wise, the worst Samsung phone I owned was the Galaxy Nexus. Man what a piece of **** it was!
Loved my Captivate, S2 and Note 2.
The G6 is awesome aside from the caveats already mentioned. WiFi usage seems to consume more battery than LTE which is probably a driver optimisation issue.

Went To Preoder The V20, Walked Out With The Phone

I went to preorder the V20 because it is the only phone even close to the Note 7. As I went to preorder the phone, the rep there was a techie so we talked for a while when he whispered "We actually got some today." Phandroid has a really excellent page/article entitled "LG V20: First 19 Things You Should Do." I tried to post the URL, but I am apparently too new to posting for it to be included, so do yourself a favor; go to your favorite search engine and search for the article in bold. I am reasonably happy with the phone. It is excellent, the two things I have yet to solve is the sub-par keyboard suggested word and custom dictionary input. Also, voice type requires two steps/long press to use. This may not seem like much to some, but this is a definite step back from manufactures that do not have this hindrance.
I am sorry if it appears as though I am bouncing around, but I just wanted to give an opinion so that someone may know what to expect. Those of you coming from Samsung will notice that you have taken quite a few features for granted. There is no reason to discuss them here, but everyone needs to be prepared to spend 5 or 6 hours preparing/customizing the phone.
The native software for the IR blaster is fantastic! I have paid $6.00 for an app that is not nearly as good. One item I will like to confront once root comes out, is the way that the camera looks/works when taking photos. At present, it looks as though I had taken some mushrooms!
All and all, I do really like the phone. The second screen is unusual, but is coming in handy already. If I find something you may be useful, I will pass it on. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me.
A) I'll ask because I'm sure others might be interested in knowing: Which store/carrier?
B) You say the camera looks weird like you're on 'shrooms. In what way? Are you talking about distortion from the wide view or something else?
What carrier?

What's your thoughts on the finger print scanner? Pretty impressive compared to the Note 7 isn't it. Not as fussy about finger placement and opens the phone in less than a second. And OK google works great, I never did get it to work with the N7 with the screen off (although note 7 had an option for that)., it works flawless with the V20. In the 2 days I had the V20, I say it nearly blows the N7 away. I am liking the way LG thought out this phone, for me it's much easier to use and navigate through, I just makes sense and is a fantastic tool and phone!!

I got my phone from Sprint. I went to another store and they will not have them until next week.
What I meant when speaking about the camera, is that it is not smooth at all. When you look through the screen at whatever you are taking a photo of, it is though the 3 different autofocus technologies they use do not work well together. If you are pointing your camera at one item, then move it to another, the picture appears as though it slowly has to catch up with the camera. I really cannot explain it, but you should look at it before you buy the phone. I am deciding now to commit to the phone, and will change this as soon as root access is achieved (this is the main thing about the phone that I find substandard).

I am with you 100% on the fingerprint scanner; it does blow the N7 out of the water. Although the phone takes fantastic video, the photo portion is not that great. But, the phone is really fantastic. It is fast and extremely well thought out. Again the only things I have to solve to make me completely happy is to find a decent keyboard. I want a keyboard that remembers items that I have typed. I do not what to type my entire email address every time I need to enter it. I also do not like the extra steps necessary to access the voice-to-text microphone.
I need to find a good SMS as well. The phone utilizes Google's messaging app, and that app is not as well made as I would have expected. I need to see an indication that I have an unread text (a number on the app or something); the native app does not do that, and I have not been able to find one yet. Also, that message presentation leaves something to be desired.
Finally, the camera software needs updating. One look while trying to take a picture will show you what I mean..
The phone is actually so good, that I am willing to wait for the software to make this my dream phone.

I tried to leave with a sprint one yesterday and they wouldn't do it. So I'm just sitting with my time bomb till tomorrow. Sprint keeps telling me to return it, until I actually try and they turn me away. Almost switched carriers over this nightmare, but I can't beat the monthly cost.

Glad you like it....I so miss the Note 7 but at least the 256 gb micro sd card that we received with the Note has a home. I pre ordered on the 13th when only AT&T was doing preorders. What is the Sprint price? VZW only charges $672 a huge reduction compared to the $830 ($829.99) that I signed up for with AT&T! Needless to say, I made sure that AT&T was going to do something in a price matching capacity for me to accept delivery of my 2 V20s yesterday. I mean $158 price difference X 2! AT&T risks losing a lot of business if they don't bring their V20 prices in line with VZW ($672), T-mobile ($679) and probably Sprint (not sure of the price). I must say I like the phone though. It's smooth, Wi-Fi and video calling work fine, and snappy (143500 on antutu).

I am with you; to me, the Note 7 was the perfect phone. I will be a customer when the Note 8 arrives. I kept the 256gb card as well. At Sprint, the phone was actually $8 more than the Note 7, but they exchanged it for the V20 with nothing else. Personally, I prefer the two year contract, and with the two year contract, the phone was $399. You have to pay for the phone up front, but I feel that it is worth it to save almost $400.

Interestingly, the VZW price for the Note 7 was $864 so it was $192 more than their price for the V20 ($672). AT&T, on the other hand (way on the other hand), priced the Note 7 at $879 only $49 more than they price the V20 ($830). For the 2 year type of plan, your line access charge shoots to $40 per month (or is it $45 per month) instead of $20? But that was for VZW maybe not so much for Sprint. I imagine the Note 7 hold-outs at VZW can now exchange their Note 7s for V20s and will pay 1/24 of $158 price difference per month ($6.58 less per month) on the edge plan.
I was able to in Sarasota Fl from a sprint in Radio shack. also in regards to the camera be sure to remove plastic from the camera. I know it sounds silly but I guarantee most wont.....

The phone is actually so good, that I am willing to wait for the software to make this my dream phone.

SwiftKey keyboard... Never go back to any keyboard again. It's amazing.

Yeah I don't think you save $400. Your monthly bill is higher when you're on a two year contract versus paying month to month.
+1 for SwiftKey keyboard.
Sent from my awesome T-Mobile LG V10!

I was able to in Sarasota Fl from a sprint in Radio shack. also in regards to the camera be sure to remove plastic from the camera. I know it sounds silly but I guarantee most wont.....

Supposedly the plastic doesn't cover the actual lens aperture. It's also being suggested that you leave the plastic on there as it turns out the glass over the cameras is a bit fragile.

bought one and have used it for maybe 4 days
the specs were really offputting e.g. display to body ratio, battery capacity
the most disappointing thing is the sound quality from the built-in speakers. they're loud and clear but lacks bass.. nothing like Boomsound speakers in the past.
battery life turned out ok! idles very well and would last me a day. I do have the feeling that it won't do as well under heavy use.
Sense Companion is missing.. read how some people have it but then the official (HK) website says it'll be available for download "early 2017" but that's all the info I could find. which is annoying.
surprisingly it's one of the first Androids (for me) that has working Wi-Fi calling out of the box. And I've owned quite a few androids before.

Pretty cool. Which network is that with in HK?
I really wish the Android OEMs will start loading the VoLTE and VoWIFI software configs in all phones, so we can use these technologies regardless of geography.

that would be nice. VoLTE is more readily available but seems to drain a fair bit of battery on standby..especially on Samsungs. But VoWifi is a first for me. I'm with Smartone in hk, phone was bought unlocked though.

relatively speaking I do feel it's a bit overpriced.. or rather not quite priced correctly when MWC was happening at the same time, new phones with next gen specs are announced etcetc

Yeah, so your HK market one had the HK carrier info loaded, so smartone worked straight away. It would be good if that was loaded for all regions, or make it downloadable by region. iPhone curerntly does this via their carrier settings facility. Android seems like we have to flash different firmware. a bit unnecessary.

That second screen looks dope !
Sense Companion was just released today, updated, in the US.
Battery drains quick.
I Am using it alot. I've switched on power saving mode.
Still goes quick, like I said...using it alot.
Big screen and second screen to power, aswel as people suggesting transmission technologies are a factor.
Wi-Fi Calling straight out of the box put a big fat smile on my face. (if your network supports it)
The buzz of owning one hasn't worn off. Probably won't for awhile.

Give it some time to settle down it might get better after some days
Sound daft but....
It looks gorgeous on YouTube!
What color did you get?
Is it as impressive in person? In know-subjective.
What are the edge breezes like (never mind top and bottom)?
Mine's blue. Seems to be a popular colour.
I'm a Die Hard HTC fan. (first phone was able to execute code on a ps3, due to the chip set)
It's taken this phone to rekindle my interest.
I'm anti apple. Ever since they started using Intel processors.
All credit to the fusion chip, it's keeping apple on top. Until they start using someone else's chip.
I'm loving the big screen, a pleasure to use and keep using what ever the task.
No regrets.

Blue one is the sexiest color, enjoy :good:
in the netherlands the black version was available 4-3-17 and the blue variant was scheduled for 18e so it was hard to see the phone was
launched but needed to wait for the blue one that's the phone i saw in the teaser on youtube and i knew right then it shut be the blue one.
i have the phone now for 7 days and could not be happier whit my new phone screen is large in first specially when coming from small htc one m7
but now after few days its great -battery is good not great ,playing hole day on it and i did 2 times this week charged back up during the day.
but after some time when phone is little older and not used as often i think will last the hole day thats great for me
its fast ,decent battery .good camera (way better than the m7) stunning looks so love the phone even when you consider the price !!

Its always hard to put a new phone down! hahaha. I'm sure your battery will improve as you find the balance of use and life. The phone is rather good in standby battery life.
