Went To Preoder The V20, Walked Out With The Phone - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

I went to preorder the V20 because it is the only phone even close to the Note 7. As I went to preorder the phone, the rep there was a techie so we talked for a while when he whispered "We actually got some today." Phandroid has a really excellent page/article entitled "LG V20: First 19 Things You Should Do." I tried to post the URL, but I am apparently too new to posting for it to be included, so do yourself a favor; go to your favorite search engine and search for the article in bold. I am reasonably happy with the phone. It is excellent, the two things I have yet to solve is the sub-par keyboard suggested word and custom dictionary input. Also, voice type requires two steps/long press to use. This may not seem like much to some, but this is a definite step back from manufactures that do not have this hindrance.
I am sorry if it appears as though I am bouncing around, but I just wanted to give an opinion so that someone may know what to expect. Those of you coming from Samsung will notice that you have taken quite a few features for granted. There is no reason to discuss them here, but everyone needs to be prepared to spend 5 or 6 hours preparing/customizing the phone.
The native software for the IR blaster is fantastic! I have paid $6.00 for an app that is not nearly as good. One item I will like to confront once root comes out, is the way that the camera looks/works when taking photos. At present, it looks as though I had taken some mushrooms!
All and all, I do really like the phone. The second screen is unusual, but is coming in handy already. If I find something you may be useful, I will pass it on. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me.

A) I'll ask because I'm sure others might be interested in knowing: Which store/carrier?
B) You say the camera looks weird like you're on 'shrooms. In what way? Are you talking about distortion from the wide view or something else?

What carrier?

The almost fish eye look.

Lol I misread your title. I thought it said you walked out with the IPhone, until I started reading your post.

What's your thoughts on the finger print scanner? Pretty impressive compared to the Note 7 isn't it. Not as fussy about finger placement and opens the phone in less than a second. And OK google works great, I never did get it to work with the N7 with the screen off (although note 7 had an option for that)., it works flawless with the V20. In the 2 days I had the V20, I say it nearly blows the N7 away. I am liking the way LG thought out this phone, for me it's much easier to use and navigate through, I just makes sense and is a fantastic tool and phone!!

He probably has it on wide angle. Also unrelated but the phone is set at 12mp out of the box for some reason., One has to bump it up in settings.

I got my phone from Sprint. I went to another store and they will not have them until next week.
What I meant when speaking about the camera, is that it is not smooth at all. When you look through the screen at whatever you are taking a photo of, it is though the 3 different autofocus technologies they use do not work well together. If you are pointing your camera at one item, then move it to another, the picture appears as though it slowly has to catch up with the camera. I really cannot explain it, but you should look at it before you buy the phone. I am deciding now to commit to the phone, and will change this as soon as root access is achieved (this is the main thing about the phone that I find substandard).

I am with you 100% on the fingerprint scanner; it does blow the N7 out of the water. Although the phone takes fantastic video, the photo portion is not that great. But, the phone is really fantastic. It is fast and extremely well thought out. Again the only things I have to solve to make me completely happy is to find a decent keyboard. I want a keyboard that remembers items that I have typed. I do not what to type my entire email address every time I need to enter it. I also do not like the extra steps necessary to access the voice-to-text microphone.
I need to find a good SMS as well. The phone utilizes Google's messaging app, and that app is not as well made as I would have expected. I need to see an indication that I have an unread text (a number on the app or something); the native app does not do that, and I have not been able to find one yet. Also, that message presentation leaves something to be desired.
Finally, the camera software needs updating. One look while trying to take a picture will show you what I mean..
The phone is actually so good, that I am willing to wait for the software to make this my dream phone.

Sprint.

I tried to leave with a sprint one yesterday and they wouldn't do it. So I'm just sitting with my time bomb till tomorrow. Sprint keeps telling me to return it, until I actually try and they turn me away. Almost switched carriers over this nightmare, but I can't beat the monthly cost.

Sprint locations at this point should have gotten their shipment...but that is the stocking-batch. Pre-orders apparently are an on-demand shipment due to idiocy.

Got a fire extinguisher, and know how to use it? Seriously.

Only have to survive one more day. I tried to plead my case with customer service and the store employees. If something does happen it's on sprint at this point. Fingers crossed i make it one more day.

Glad you like it....I so miss the Note 7 but at least the 256 gb micro sd card that we received with the Note has a home. I pre ordered on the 13th when only AT&T was doing preorders. What is the Sprint price? VZW only charges $672 a huge reduction compared to the $830 ($829.99) that I signed up for with AT&T! Needless to say, I made sure that AT&T was going to do something in a price matching capacity for me to accept delivery of my 2 V20s yesterday. I mean $158 price difference X 2! AT&T risks losing a lot of business if they don't bring their V20 prices in line with VZW ($672), T-mobile ($679) and probably Sprint (not sure of the price). I must say I like the phone though. It's smooth, Wi-Fi and video calling work fine, and snappy (143500 on antutu).

I am with you; to me, the Note 7 was the perfect phone. I will be a customer when the Note 8 arrives. I kept the 256gb card as well. At Sprint, the phone was actually $8 more than the Note 7, but they exchanged it for the V20 with nothing else. Personally, I prefer the two year contract, and with the two year contract, the phone was $399. You have to pay for the phone up front, but I feel that it is worth it to save almost $400.

Two-year plan

Interestingly, the VZW price for the Note 7 was $864 so it was $192 more than their price for the V20 ($672). AT&T, on the other hand (way on the other hand), priced the Note 7 at $879 only $49 more than they price the V20 ($830). For the 2 year type of plan, your line access charge shoots to $40 per month (or is it $45 per month) instead of $20? But that was for VZW maybe not so much for Sprint. I imagine the Note 7 hold-outs at VZW can now exchange their Note 7s for V20s and will pay 1/24 of $158 price difference per month ($6.58 less per month) on the edge plan.

I was able to in Sarasota Fl from a sprint in Radio shack. also in regards to the camera be sure to remove plastic from the camera. I know it sounds silly but I guarantee most wont.....

Yeah I don't think you save $400. Your monthly bill is higher when you're on a two year contract versus paying month to month.

+1 for SwiftKey keyboard.

Supposedly the plastic doesn't cover the actual lens aperture. It's also being suggested that you leave the plastic on there as it turns out the glass over the cameras is a bit fragile.

Where's everyone going?

As the time comes that most of us who did a 2 yr upgrade are coming up on picking up a new device what is everyone gravitating to?
The waterproofing of the S5 is nice but inability to root is disheartening, the M8 is nice but I'm not sure about it.

I am moving to Sony Z2 for waterproof and style. Its slick lines just make it look like art.
I find the M8 good looking from the front but ugly from the side and back. Something about its big sloppy curved back doesnt sit right with me. The phone just looks fat and bulky.
S5 really does seem like the standout device this year. But I have never wanted what everyone else has. Plus I find it bland looking.

What about the M8 aren't you sure about? Its what I picked up last week, and its a fabulous phone.
I've summed up my feeling between the two devices (GS5 vs. M8) pretty well over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52651026&postcount=14
The build quality of the M8 simply blows the GS5 out of the water.
The only "pros" I see on the GS5 side are:
- the waterproofing (M8 is still water resistant, just not meant to be completely submerged)
- better photos in good lighting (mainly outdoors, and how much this matter is going to depend on how you use your phone most often)
- much bigger market share and therefore larger community (but with the bootloader so locked down, how much does this matter?)
Side note: I haven't been keeping up with the GS5 root status, so I decided to hop over there and just take a peek before harping on the issue too much (to avoid spreading any possible misinformation). And the situation is bleak, to say the least. I don't think I've ever seen a Development forum section this empty. Even the EVITA (with a locked down bootloader) had some development threads before the phone was even released:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/development
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/orig-development
I mean, I'm sure the talented devs here figure something out eventually. But this was just pretty striking to see.

I changed my contract to the no-contract plan AT&T has now and save a lot of money on our bill. On the other hand, I'm stuck with this phone until something worth buying off-contract comes along. Not that it's a bad phone. I just installed a new battery and brand new white housing I got off ebay for under $25 bucks total and it looks and works like new! (better than new with CM11 and some overclocking) Every new phone coming out lately is too big. All 5+ inch screens and I can barely hold this phone with one hand as it is. Oh well, maybe the new Nexus will be reasonably sized.

I had my HOXL for just over a year, thinking of installing the HOX+ 2100mAh I grabbed a while ago.
I still believe the HOXL is a beautiful and capable device (for my needs anyways). Agree that nothing is very convincing at the moment
Could've gone for One (M7) when I got my Evita, many things I didn't like, and definitely the gap increased with M8, it seems after many years with hTC I am going to try something else, maybe until they come back to their senses
As for the size, was in shop the other day and compared my Evita to LG G2, the later is barley taller by 2 mm and wider by 1 mm, 14 g heavier but same thickness, it packs a 5.2" screen with thin bezel, just this is amazing, faster CPU 2. 2 and double ram, whooping 3000 mAh battery, There is the matter of back volume rocker and power button, which I was kinda sceptical to, but wen I tried the phone in my hand I was actually surprised it might be more ergonomical and less finger stretchy than Evita.
Not in a rush, wil wait and see what the rest of year 2014 has to offer.

Personally If I go for it I'll be satisfied with possibility to root and flash custom recovery, both of which didn't seem to be an issue with G2. This should be sufficient for flashing custom roms and kernels. There is good activity in G2 forums though.
I got my Evita last year, March 2013. It's still working ok, no real problems. I'm bothered that basically it's been abandoned by HTC though. I'd really like Kitkat, to use 4.4 only stuff like Google Camera etc.
I'd consider buying something else, but I've found the Evita too large and now all new phones are pretty much larger. I'm checking out buying the Moto G but sadly it's very hard to find the 16gb variant in Canada. I'm also interested in what the Moto X+1 turns out to be...
I'm hoping to get an invite for the oneplus one phone. If I get that, I will surely be purchasing it. if I dont get one before the next nexus (if there is one,) I will be purchasing a nexus. I'm also thinking about going to t-mob no contract. If I happen to renew my att contract, which I am unsure if I want to do, I will be jumping for the g3.
My earspeaker pretty much went out and gf dropped phone a few too many times so I took advantage of the $0.00 total for the LG G2 online at www.att.com the HTC One m7 is also $0.00 at Best Buy but I really wanted the updated processor. I really wanted the m8 or OnePlus One or maybe even the G3 when it arrives but Im too low on income.
Today I rooted it and was about to flash recovery but power went out. Made me super pissed. I was also low level formatting a hard drive at the same time so now I have to start that process over again.
I'd really like to play around with a Sony phone.
I see so many mixed reviews on Sony phones. On the surface they're incredible, the Z2 has amazing hardware, but I've seen heaps of reports of them heating up so much that the screen cracks. Among other faults. And Sony blames the consumer instantly when there's physical damage, no matter what the cause, which I guess I can understand because there's just no way to prove what caused it. But, you'd think after so many reports they might click.
Sent from my Evita
Well, I picked up an M8 and while I'm blown away at how incredible it is, I'm sorely going to miss tinkering on the Evita. I have no intention of getting rid of it though. The Evita was my first smart phone to really get the most out of. I think I flashed and tried pretty much every Rom and Mod worth using in this forum. I'll still hang out occasionally. Thanks for the good times and making the phone 10 times better.

I would like some insight too.
1st. Would like the M10 2nd. Google (read about *4G issues?) 6P .
question is being on VZW.
will s-off and root be possible for M10 on vzw?
??
So I was on the fence for a while going back and forth with the leaks, but I think after the official announcement I'm in. Everything about this phone sounds great. I'm also liking their new ad campaign. HTC's #1 issue has been marketing. Yes the M9 was a miss for most of us on this forum, but that's because we already had the M8 and there was little reason to upgrade. The M9 was in many ways still an excellent phone. I really hope that the HTC 10 + Vive can help HTC recapture the market. The fact that they are releasing a new phone that pushes the envelope in nearly every direction despite shrinking margins and posting a net loss is very impressive.
I can't say with certainty, but I'm very hopeful of the s-off / rooting potential of this phone, even then VZW version. The unlocked GSM model will be able to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.
As it seems is always the case these days, with everything new we get, we lose some features as well. Let's take a moment of silence for stereo front facing speakers and the IR blaster... add them to the Qi wireless charging we lost after the DNA.
My only complaints with the HTC 10 so far: Facebook will come preinstalled and can't be removed (ugh), and the rear camera sticks out, which is fine if you use a case, but I almost never do, so that's annoying.
Oh, and I apparently the Camellia Red colorway is a KDDI JPY exclusive, which stinks. I have the red M8 and I love it! If I could buy a red 10 I'd be so happy.

https://twitter.com/jcase/status/719891850484559873
HTC 10 will be on all carriers except At&t, the unlocked variant will of course work on there still. I am so excited for this device, it has everything you could want in a phone. Sense UI is still great & it being closer to stock is a plus. This & the Galaxy S7 are the only 2 devices right now that have my attention, its either a phone that can be Rooted & Boomsound or a phone that is Water Resistant & has Layers Support.

Thanks buddy, I love my ?8.
I recently dropped it and cracked the screen. So I have been looking for a replacement.
Would like it to be better then the M8.
Being I'm on VZW unlimited. I know Big red is locking all doors. I would like to use my phone with the least possible restriction. Would like the phone to have great community/dev support.

And a built in battery which makes it a totally useless phone for me. My M8 is the only phone I'll ever own with a non-removable battery. Sorry HTC, not for me.
No removable battery or no removable storage card = NO!

One out of two = NO! Micro SD slot AND removable battery = minimum acceptable features.
I may pick up a used Galaxy 4 again and activate it, the M8 is now two years old and the battery life has dropped quite a bit... <sigh>
Removable batteries are not a priority for the majority of users. In all the years I've had a phone I've never swapped out batteries. While I understand there may be use cases that require removable batteries, I've found that portable battery packs solve most use cases. If you must have the ability to swap batteries than I suggest looking at the LG G5.
I like the HTC 10. Seems like a solid upgrade, especially the camera which is now one of the best on the market compared to the M9 being one of the worst. Sense 8, and lack of bloatware seems fantastic for the unlocked version. If Javacard can s-off the HTC 10 on Verizon, that might pull me over! Sense is probably the cleanest, smoothest UI I've used.
I ended up getting a Nexus 6P in mid-march. Love the screen size. I'm holding LTE band 4 a lot better than I did with the M8, and can now get LTE in my basement when I was only able to get 3G on M8.
The 4G issue you were referring to could have been fixed by the last major firmware update, but who knows. Haven't had a problem with mine. Go figure. Every phone has its own personality
Only annoying part is Verizon includes free visual voicemail, but no way to use it (no app compatible) so I keep getting a text for each voicemail. Can be rectified by calling CS and downgrading to basic voicemail, but don't care enough. I may get 1 voicemail every month? lol
I use Google Voice for my voicemail, it's free and much better than Verizon's offering. As an added bonus, you get a 2nd phone number which is great for when you don't want to give out your actual cell to anyone (filtering calls is much easier in Google Voice than through Verizon).
I'll wait until the first or second price drop. Since my m8 just got marshmallow, I'm very happy with it and don't need to be on the latest and greatest. I'd rather have the money in my pocket.
I would love to get another HTC phone but the 10 isn't up to snuff compared to the Samsung Galaxy S7. I was leaning towards the S7 just because of the wireless charging ability and better camera.

I was interested (more so bored with having the same phone over a year) but then I bought my wife a galaxy s7 and I can say for certain other than camera performance, faster charging and specs nothing has changed since 2014 worth upgrading for. For two days I ran app after same app on both with no real difference in real world speed (running stock rooted marshmallow with NO mods) despite benchmarks and specs. Increased resolution serves no purpose other than specs on a 5" screen and human eyes. Both screens look perfect. I guess a fingerprint reader would be nice for people who lock their phone or think it's easier to pull out a phone than bank card (she doesn't use it. Never even been set up).
Point is after real world comparison nothing revolutionary has changed. They aren't even getting prettier and thinner anymore (m8 and m9 look better and thinner). So I bought a skin/wrap and I feel like I have a brand new phone. Pretty sure this is why at some point they stop supporting newer software. From 2014 many people would never need to buy a new phone except for outdated software.

I'm considering the G5, hoping someone will unlock the bootloader. I suspect people with newer phones haven't encountered the battery problems I have with my M8 (my LAST PHONE with a non-removable battery!) which is over 3 years old, the battery was fine until around 30 days ago...
I hit the sack around 11 PM and connect the phone to the charger, I get up at 7 AM and take the phone off the charger. When new, I could often get to 10 PM w/o recharging, recently I have to recharge TWICE during the day and today I noticed the phone won't charge more than 85%!
So now my options are: Replace battery, this involves losing the phone for some days and spending a bunch of bucks or new phone, again a bunch of bucks or buying a used phone from Swappa, again a bunch of bucks all of which would never have happened if I could only remove the old battery and slide in a new one!
I'll definitely try to get it. When ever they decide to release it on VZW. Way worth the upgrade from the M8 . 4 gigs of ram, SD 820, fingerprint, new boomsound/headphone audio, better cameras, 4k video recording, USB C, QC 3.0, a little bigger screen size but without the size of the phone increasing, I assume better battery life.
I stopped by a Verizon store yesterday to play with their display 10. It's a nice phone, but I don't think it's worth the $600-700 price to upgrade over the M8. I like the physical design of the M8 better, not a fan of the chamfored edged on the back or the rear camera bump. For the "best mobile camera ever" I was underwhelmed. Maybe it's just the awful lighting in the verizon store, but the image quality wasn't substantially different. I noticed the 10's front camera is much less wide-angle than the M8's. Moving the headphone jack to the top sucks. Back to the days of wires sticking out the top and bottom of your device. Also, you know how the M8 has that glossy plastic strip across the top, which blends well into the IR blaster power button? Well the 10 has the same strip except it's a soft matte grey plastic that I just don't think works at all. It looks like the original M7 did.
To be honest I'm a bit disappointed. I rushed out to buy the Thunderbolt when it came out, I waited for the store to open to pick up the DNA. Upgrading to the M8 felt like a major upgrade. Going from M8 to 10 though just feels like a slight iteration, gaining some new bells and whistles but losing others. Maybe HTC will get the 11 right, if they survive that long...

Pixel count the image is wider. The m8 only has a 4MP camera while the 10 has a 12MP camera. It shoots @12mP in 4:3. The wide-screen mode is a cropped version of the 12MP and still is a lot more MP than the m8. Also the screen is a much higher resolution than the m8 so the same pictures from the m8 would take up less space.
Honestly the phone is solid. Battery is great. Been using mine for a couple days now.

Note 7 refugee thread

Hey guys,
Just a place for former Note 7 users to vent / discuss etc. Going through a recall sucks. Going through it twice sucks more.
We can use this as a "phone comparison" thread talking about software differences or other things you miss, or whatever.
Just traded in my replacement Note 7 for the edge this morning (Canadian exynos version).
Missing the bigger screen, more symmetrical body, spen, and Grace UI already! Man, even the theme store is gimped!

do you find that the S7 edge's steeper curves/edges make it harder to use the phone one handed? from what i read, the Note 7 was a huge improvement over the S7E in that because the curve got toned down a bit. on the S7E, i hear people complain that when they use it one hand and move their thumb around, alot of times the part of the palm under the thumb touches the touches, which lead to unwanted taps or for the screen to not respond because part of the palm is on the edge.
i have the note 7 and am considering switching over to the S7E, but i think the steeper edges would annoy me if the touch issue is indeed the case.

I was worried about that. athesticlly I much prefer the Note 7 edges, especially while watching media. I personally haven't had a problem with accidental touches.
I am now convinced both of my Note 7s (original and replacement) had a bad fingerprint sensor. They would both not register consistently, especially when my hands were cold (Im Canadian lol!). The S7E nails it every time.
At least my S7E is literally newer. Original built Aug 09, replacement Aug 31.

Well not quite.
I pre-ordered the Note 7 for $1050, initially paying a $50 deposit (plus tax, coming to $56)
I then took advantage of the trade in ($200 for a dead flip phone) and paid tax on the remainder. My total bill was $976.
I also received the Gear Fit 2 as a pre order gift.
I just Traded in my 2nd (replacement) Note 7 for an S7E. I was given the $100 trade in (pretax credit) and the $200 pre tax trade in from the original Note 7 order. My total "debit" after the credits was $652. After my $976 "credit" I was left with $317 which was refunded to me. Both exchanges I only gave the phone, and was not asked for accessories.
In summary,
I paid $659 total tax in.
I have: An S7E, Gear Fit 2, 2 sets of Note 7 accessories (Chargers, cables, adapters, headphones etc.....and I kept the last spen for laughs).
So, I have some freebies and an S7E for $659 Canadian total. Is that worth the hassle of going through 2 recalls? For me it was an extra hassle as I am I Pilot with air Canada.
All in, I am impressed with the way Samsung handled this so far. They have kept me as a customer.
As a note, I purchased the Note 7 (preorder) outright from Samsung Canada at a Samsung Store. Both recalls were official from Health Canada, and as a Pilot I had to navigate bans from the FAA and Transport Canada (as well as the regulatory authorities of the other countries I fly into and out of).

Ah the tax was the problem for you which is why you got less money back. I live in a tax free country and I heard from my friend that he got S7 Edge and the money which made him pretty happy.
Though funny that you are a pilot and had a Note 7, because with the Note 7 exploding I wonder how people travelling through plane or those who were like you managed so far.

I got caught "on the road" while the initial wave occurred. Samsung Canada totally dropped the ball. I went directly to the Samsung store upon getting back from my flights. At that point there was no official recall anywhere and they were referring to it as a "voluntary exchange program". They refused to refund me, and told me my device was perfectly safe. I did the right thing and put my Note 7 in sage storage and dug my old trusty HTC One M7 out of the drawer. During my next pairing, the official recall rolled out, the FAA and Transport Canada reacted etc. Samsung still refused to give me a loaner device, and wouldn't accept my old one. Went to work again, Samsung started accepting returns, my new "safe model" arrived etc. I got back and had a week off. I enjoyed my new Note 7 and Samsung shipped a return box for my old one. Off I went to fly again and boom, bad reports coming and then a quick 2nd recall lol!
Samsung did things right the 2nd time.
Tax free the math would have worked out to paying $850 after trade in for the Note 7 (1050-200), then getting the new S7E for $550 (850 list - 200 trade in credit - 100 credit). I would have walked away with $300 exactly. Due to our taxes being higher on the initial purchase (math lol!) I actually ended up with more.
If you count the $250 value of the Gear fit 2 and the value of the 2 USB C quick chargers and accesories (lets call that $100, but probably worth more) than really we were not treated that badly.
That being said the Samsung rep (not a Samsung store employee, an actual rep from Samsung canada) said he expects former Note 7 owners to get a "sweet" offer on the spiritual successor to the Note series, along with a generous trade in value for our S7 or S7Es.

With one handed it happens, but it happens more if you're laying on your back and holding the phone.
two things can decrease the effect.
1- put a back cover, which will decrease the touching side areas.
2- this only affects the keyboard, which is the most annoying problem:
Settings > Language and Input > Samsung Keyboard > Keyboard size>
decrease the width of the keyboard.
While the above may be temporary fixes, for me it's not acceptable at all, Samsung should optimize its software to understand unwanted touches and ignore them, for me the whole edge thing is crap

Dang, my S7E was manufactuered July 1 according to this app. After about 3 weeks of ownership I noticed that the home button only works when depressed in the middle - when you press the left side it doesn't register as a click. On top of that, the audio crackles frequently when watching Youtube videos as well as when recording videos with the camera. I tried taking it back to Best Buy, but they refused to honor an exchange!

Samsung never stops failing with it's home button. Had a problem on S4 now my S7E home button clicks like with a brand new speaker inside it. Fells so cheap, my TAB S2 have a much better home button, dunno if replacing a device will help... a lot of ppl saying that button is clicky as hell and no one will help with that problem :/
There is no screen capture GIF option yet... but you can use an samsung add-on to capture gifs from your camera on the fly.
I'm a Note7 Refugee as well, after the recall I would have done the Note5, but no sd card so I opted for the international S7 Edge with Exynos instead of the t-mobile version with SD820. (It was cheaper, faster, multitasks way better and has better battery life. I'm relatively happy with it other than no S Pen. The "my knox" is less refined than the "secure folder" we had on Note7. I hope they update S7 Edge to include the "Secure Folder" version, as it is one of the best software features of the device.
So basically features the S7 Edge needs from the Note7 that are actually theoretically possible are:
-Animated Gif Screen Capture
-Secure Folder
-Always On Display that shows third party app notifications.
-GraceUX
If they get us those, Waiting till next year's "note" or "S8 Pro" device that has a stylus will be tolerable.

Would love to get another Rom, not much customizations on the basic one. There is some lags, but I can't see alot of bloatware.
For $199 it's a pretty good phone. Had a hassle on getting a gel case for it though.
I bought it to use with my own mvno.
So far so good

Hey there. Picked up the phone and here's my impressions:
Build Quality / Look and Feel:
Admittedly, I decided to pick up this phone after I fell in love with the looks of it. It has a great thin, flat, and boxy look that I'm drawn to. After picking one up, I'm still inspecting it and enjoying it's design. Admittedly, the back of the phone appears to borrow quite a bit from Apple's designs.
When I first held the phone, it felt slightly cheap coming from a Moto E4+ which manages to feel quite premium with an all metal exterior and quite a bit of heft. Alternatively, the orbic felt cheap moreso because how light it was, which is arguably a positive trait.
The thin, flat, boxy look reminds me of some of the Nokia Lumia devices from a few years back.
Display:
Overall, the 1080p display is impressive. The colors seem very natural when compared to the highly saturated amoled displays but some prefer that. In this instance, it appears pretty impressive when considering the price tag.
Performance & Sound:
The octo-core processor is quite impressive in switching between apps and web page loading. I've had a remarkably smooth experience scrolling through the web and transitioning between apps.
The Android 7.1 OS is essentially as pure as it comes, with no bloatware to speak of and no visible Android skinning. This feels like a snappy solid Nexus/Pixel/Android One device despite the fact that it is not one.
Not sure if this belongs here, but the vibration seems somewhat weaker than expected.
In regards to sound, this is the biggest area where the phone shows it's price tag. While the sounds are crisp and clear, the volume is quite low and somewhat tinny at higher volumes. Fortunately, my phone is almost always on vibrate and paired with an Android Wear watch as well so I don't mind this much.
Battery:
The overall battery performance is quite impressive. The standby drain is remarkable slow and can last you into a good portion of a second day with ease in most cases. I forgot to charge my phone one day this weekend (long night, whiskey was involved) and woke up with about 39% left. I used the phone for about 5-6 more hours with considerable use before I grabbed a charge at about 19%.
Camera:
This is perhaps the most surprisingly impressive area for me so far. The Moto E4+ leaves quite a bit to be desired, but this phone seems to really impress in good lighting. The low lighting pictures are okay, but I'd say they outperform the Moto E line by quite a bit still and still carry a good price tag to boot.
I tried to attach photos as an example but it won't allow me to.
Conclusion:
Overall I'm really impressed with the phone and still having trouble putting it down after about 4 days of use. The camera has performed fantastically, the battery life is great (likely due partially to pure Android), and the performance is very snappy for a $199 ($179 at BB right now) phone.
My only worry is how little I see on the web about this phone as I think it deserves quite a bit of credit.

I, actually own this phone, also its not a mediatek, or mine isn't.
Snapdragon 430 processor
2GB ram
16GB storage
3000Mah Battery
5.5inch IPS Display
Stock Android
USB Type C AND a headphone Jack.
Honestly i've had little to no issues with this phone other than the bluetooth under battery stats showing some hilarious stuff.

If you want, you can PM me your google hangouts email, and we can see if it's possible to maybe crack into it and modify some software. Possibly unlock the bootloader or gain root access (or both).

Have you gotten anywhere with that at all?

Unfortunately not. When I looked at the wonder I thought it was a mediatek device, but it was actually a QCOM all along. I could've sworn the demo model I looked at a while ago had a mediatek in it.
But yeah, if this isn't a mediatek this won't be going anywhere anytime soon unfortunately.
is this not possible with TWRP?
I want to purchase the Orbic Wonder but I need to have root access in order for it to be a worthwhile investment

We can't get so far as to even put TWRP on it
OH. I understand now... I guess that leaves contacting Orbic as an option.

Already tried, they said they will never unlock devices that are meant to reach consumer hands... AKA only their developers get to play around with stuff

I have one of these if I run uname: get aarch64 rev 4.
similar to one on galaxy s6 so I guess is not so bad. 3gb ram would be better. I found a case that fits the phone. ZTE blade S6 max, but have to find a good screen protector that matches the fingerprint sensor, anybody any ideas?
I am giving mine to a relative after I discovered the bootloader issue. not a bad phone I figure.
I got the wonder as a replacement device after breaking the hardware on 2 phones in 4 months. I haven't tweaked it at all as I did with other phones, but it works pretty well as it comes with no bloatware, with all things considered. Would love to hear if someone roots theirs though. This bootloader is ....

Would you mind getting CPU-Z and posting the specs of the SoC and CPU?
Specs for the Orbic Wonder. Currently have a client using one on Red Pocket Verizon.
Orbic Wonder
So I bought this phone a few weeks ago. So far I am impressed, particularly with its price point.
There is a post about the sound/speaker not being loud enough and I agree. I also agree with the quality of the camera.
The biggest issue I have is with the screen sensitivity when I am on the phone. If my ear or cheek touch the screen it starts activating things. For example, if I have a notification that I have a voicemail, when I am talking on the phone some part of my face will touch the screen, pull down the notifications, hit the notification for voicemail and then try to access my voicemail by putting the current call on hold and connecting to voicemail. Drives me nuts....anything on the screen I brush up against will launch.
I've looked for screen sensitivity settings (which I have seen on previous phones I've owned) and don't see anything related. Of course I could be missing it.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas of how to change this? Calling Orbic didn't do any good....they are going to "forward it" and who knows if that will ever get a response.
So if you have thoughts - a setting on the phone or a 3rd part app, please let me know!!!
Otherwise, I quite like this phone!
Thanks!

I've contact Orbic a couple times about questions I've had and haven't gotten much in the way of what I'd call answers. Were they able to help you?
Do you happen to have the firmware for this or could you dump it for me?I have aquired one of these Orbic Wonder RC555L phones but the previous owner did something to cause it to bootloop when i attempt to start it / put it in recovery or other modes. The only thing I can do is access Fastboot and Qualcomm 9008 mode which is GOOD i at least have FB of all things. I'm not sure what I should use to dump everything myself. My phone workstation here has limited software and hardware connected for the time being.
If you or anyone else could help me locate this firmware whether online or a dump of it that would be great! So far my extensive 2 day research has turned up nothing.
BTW: There is numerous vulnerabilities for this phone, some potentially useful for a root method. Bootloader is unlockable and i think it should be relatively easy to come up with something. I would be willing to use my device as a donor and help out if anyone is interested in achieving root and creating TWRP and eventually a custom Rom.
Just post and get ahold of me on here or email me at noidodroid AT gmail DOT com.
Thanks

I do have a new method we can try for bootloader unlocking. I haven't replied to this thread in a long time because I had run out of ideas, but as of recently I now have one more trick I want to try. If you, or anyone reading this with this phone, wants to try some stuff out send me a PM. I'll get you in a telegram group

Headphone jack/DAC coming to Essential phone..

Surprised no one else reported this yet. Really surprised by it.

Right? I saw it come up on my google feeds while rocking out at the Slayer concert lastnight. I'm pretty pumped about it.
I can only hope they already had made a zillion of these things and it's cheaper to try and sell some of them rather than throw them away. Better be under $20...haha
Maybe they can also make a high-end camera mod too with zoom lens and large sensor for good night shots. If they could do this it should give the company the kick it needs.
Where the hell is the charging dock? That's the one accessory I was looking to buy.

From that article -
"Wait, the Essential Phone will be a year old at that point. How long does Essential plan on selling their original, issue-plagued phone?"
Kinda **** statement, no?
That guy sounds very cynical. Considering he is in the industry he probably has every phone out there unlike some of us that can't afford to buy another phone. If he doesn't like it why does he bother reporting it?
My biggest concern is it's made out of titanium. It'll be > $100
We will see. The phone was made of titanium also. It's not as expensive as it used to be. Lot's of titanium watches out there also that are not expensive.
I'd rather use qobuz‘s flac streaming with a sony ldac bluetooth headphone...
For a company that designed arguably one of the classiest smartphones, the form factor of this DAC is surprisingly poor and inconvenient.
I would have created a case (to mate with the pins) with an extended top to house a horizontal headphone jack and electronics, and if needed, an extended bottom to house additional electronics and balance the weight. This would have resulted in simply a taller device rather than having an asymmetrical block attached to it's back...

The email I got said $400 with three months of Tidal free. Eeek.
