It was just reported that OnePlus has been leaking a devtool by Qualcomm that can be used to root Qualcomm devices without unlocking the bootloader. It got me to wondering if it could somehow be used to obtain root on the Verizon version of the Pixel 2.
https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-root-access-backdoor/
It's not installed on the Pixel, as best I can determine, so no go.
Well yes...I wouldn't expect it to be installed on the Pixel by Google, but perhaps it can be sideloaded.
If it were to be installed on the Pixel, I think it would need to be given system write permissions, which I know is possible to some degree via ADB without root.
Am interested to see where this leads. It's probably a dead end but at least worth poking at.
I wonder if @jcase has any thoughts on this.

It was a development app, not anything new. It is specific to the device it was built for.

Welp, that settles that. I assumed that it was compatible with Qualcomm SoC's in general, and not device specific. Thanks!
It's not device specific in that sense, it's device specific in that unless it's pre-loaded with system privileges, you won't be able to side-load and use it for root.

Ahh, I see. Even if we got it on the Pixel 2, there's no way to give it the access that it needs. Gotcha.

Does anyone know if this is going to work for the Verizon S6?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/orig-development/cf-auto-root-t3056630
I'm not sure, but it's been reported that it will. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to root the device. If it trips knox then it will probably break the tap and pay functionality and now that Samsung has come up with a secure phone that's easy to use I may actually use that feature.

i am always preaching to folks that say root wont happen and i have always been right BUT take a look at the Note 4 HERE where since release it has raised around $15,000 in pledges for root and nothing has happened.
i am a believer but starting to feel it may be doubtful for the US versions at least.

if root is obtained it is likely that an Xposed Module will be created to get the Pay working even with root as it has worked for me in the past on the Note 3 with Softcard.
root has to come first then the solutions to things like this are generally much easier than root itself
A root bounty thread has been started.

Not sure how many of you have heard of the "security" issue discovered on many newer phones but supposedly it can allow someone to request and be granted SU access via even a simple app. I'm not sure exactly how it would work but it's only for those of us with QC chipsets (that's us, the S7 and S7 Edge are listed as "vulnerable"). Until a fix is pushed, it can be accomplished on all stock firmwares. No need to ODIN or push anything through ADB (so far as I can tell).
The company that discovered it recently shared the vulnerability with QC, manufacturers, and I believe even carriers. They are giving them a standard of 90 days to make a patch and push it before they release it to the public. i.e. don't update anything if you want any hope of utilizing this.
For those with the skill and knowledge, is it possible to use this to our advantage?

It's likely these security issues were already patched in a recent update. So for most of us, it's probably a no-go.
This has been discussed in another thread... This has been debunked as completely useless. Sorry guys to disappoint you. The good news is we have devs working on a bootloader unlock!!

It's just a proof of concept. No one has actually used it to gain root access.
does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?

Yeah I also want to root it. Plz anyone tell the method.

Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.

Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.
Could there be any downside to root my phone now (with Magisk) as if I were doing it later?
Is it possible that future versions of Magisk (or any other rooting method) will retain more original factory features (Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Widevien DRM etc...?
Or is this very unlikely?
At least everything related to Knox (e.g. Samsung Pay, Secure Folder....) will not work any more once unlocked and rooted - even if relocking and going back to full stock.
GPay should work now..... but this is judging from my experience with other current phones, still waiting for Samsung to deliver my S22U

Indeed we have no idea about "future of magisk" so don't rely on future verion of magisk
If you want to root, just look into current scenario and decide you want to root or not. As of now (On OneUI 4.0 on other devices) Samsung Pay & Samung Pass (and Knox thingy) doesn't work. Though it doen't mean everything other works, still you needs to patch multiple things like Samsung Health, Secure folder, Private sharing and may be more. Also many apps may not work but you needs to hide them with magisk (Still no guarantee it will work)
So my pesonal advice is to before jumping to rooting, read as much possible rooting and magisk thread. Rooting is one way, once you trip knox, it's for forever and some stuff never work again even after relocking bootloader.

There have been ongoing issues and failures with the variable rate displays going back to the N20U, it could to be an expensive gamble.
There's zero track record for this model but expect more of the same...
Relatively little display failures with the N10+ fixed rate display even after over 2 years.
The resale value will be diminished and forget a trade-in. Rooting will destroy some of its core functionality, forever. Too many "I bricked my phone" threads here already... at least take a few months to start to get to know your stock new phone. Better have deep pockets if you decide to root this Samsung...

Doesn't make much sense to buy this phone than if the native UI pukes you out.
The hardware is lacking; no SD card slot. A poorer form factor/layout than the N10+ as well and 1 mm thicker. No APTX HD and no 3.5 mm jack. Meh.
The most outrageous insult comes from Google Android itself; scoped storage is fully active. Nullifying some of the speed and efficiency; the old Intel/MS paradox reincarnates itself once again. With scoped storage come a slew of 3rd party app issues not create by Samsung at all.

Hmm, honestly speaking nobody is forcing anybody to unlock and root his device
From an IT security standpoint there is a reason for preventing modifications to a phone used by many for things like paying, storing sensitive data, having access to restricted data via specific apps, to corporate email accounts for BYOD etc etc
I am among the first to embrace tweaking options but in the end it all depends on what I use root access for: easy backup/restore of apps including user data, adblocking, UI +system tweaking, limiting of (for me) unnecessary system processes to optimize battery - all of this could easily be integrated by the manufacturers ....
In the end the good thing about Android is that you have a choice and maybe for rooting/tweaking Samsung isn't the best due to Knox and it's irreversibility....
