Coming from BlackBerry, I have gotten worried several times already with my new Evo.
In my former Blackberry, also with Sprint, you sent me an email and before three seconds (specially on my Hotmail account) I would feel my Blackberry vibrating already. It was blazing amazing.
On my Evo, I have my email set to sync every 5 minutes, which is the max allowed by the settings. It's set for 5 minutes peak and not peak, and the 7 days of the week.
Last night at 11:30pm I received an email sent at 7pm. The time stamp on the email was 7pm, the email was received at 11:30pm. I saw it because I manually synchronized, otherwise..... This would have never happened with the BlackBerry (who own their own email servers, which have no equal, now I see).
4 hours 30 minutes is not acceptable. This is the worst example, but not the only one. Some of them took 2 hours, some 10 minutes, and about 75% are on time.
The sync is not working every 5 minutes as it should. It's like it just dies out. I have a strong 3G signal, so signal is not the issue.
My phone is still virgin (stock).
Exactly the same is going on with the Weather widget, it wasn't sync-ing, but now the sync settings grayed out on me. I can't even change the settings. The weather application works for me only when I manually sync, yesterday morning it was raining and there was a huge shining sun on my screen, so it's not accu---rate. This noon I still had a full moon on my screen.
I wonder what's going on.
K9 mail brah
Thanks. Installing k9Mail now....

Any change you use a gmail account? The gmail app sends a notification as soon as the e-mail is received, just like the blackberry. If not, perhaps you should forward your e-mails (from hotmail) to a gmail account and bypass the 5 minute syncing issue.
Also, if you're using a task killer, be sure you have your e-mails apps listed as "ignore" otherwise you might kill the syncing and automatic updating.
To summarize:
- If you use Gmail use the Gmail app.
- If you use Exchange use the Exchange option in the Email app.
- If you use IMAP use K9 Mail.
All of the above options will give you push email that is pretty much instant.

email app in andorid has to be refined more, especially push and sync.
I do get into some issues at times, but with froyo , hopefully its going to be solved.
( so far the best sync option for email for me has been my jaibrokeb iphone . no flames please. i am not an apple fanboy and i have never used blackberry )

Hi, thanks. Yes, I have a gmail account but that''s the one I just created for the market application. I have had that Hotmail account for about 10 years or more... That one worked perfectly with BBerry. I installed K-9 Mail, which looks great but keeps logging error messages "server allows to log in only once every 15 minutes." I configured this to sync every minute, so I get 15 error messages before it works (syncs). At least the HTC stock mail doesn't have that problem.
I may need to switch to gmail..at least some of the email traffic. I have a task killer but it doesn't kill the mail application or any other system appl. Just flickr, Facebook, Amazon MP3...

Thanks. With Exchange you guys mean an enterprise MS Exchange server, correct? which I don't have access to.
That's what I miss the most of my BlackBerry, the speed to get emails. I made tests with iPhones, Androids, and even Blackberry's on ATT and this Sprint BlackBerry was the best. Not even 3 seconds most of the time, using Hotmail.
Hotmail has recently released the exchange settings. U should try that
It keeps happening with this HTC stock email application. I have 3 different sorts of email accounts setup on it, and it seems that only the one on the foreground works, the other 2 in the background are asleep. If I get an email in one of those sleeping mailboxes, I don't even get a notification, led, nor sound, or anything. I just received an email from 7AM at this time, 1123AM, and just because I checked because I was curious, otherwise.... That prompted me to write this. Just out of frustration. One of those email accounts in the background is a Google account, and it didn't work. I will have to split them into different email applications according to the type of account, as suggested above. I have a strong 3G signal. It has to be something in the implementation. The task killer just kills those flickr, Amazon, Facebook, that's about it. It doesn't kill any system files. Not even google talk.
I'll keep investigating.
Update
In case somebody has the same problem, I am tracking down what's going on here.
Definitely, the problem is caused by one process the Task Killer....is killing...
I'm very surprised. The tasks that are being killed are mostly HTC programs that apparently shouldn't affect the performance of MAIL and WEATHER, but it does. Probably, this is also affecting the other issue I have, the setting of location services being permanently turned off.
Now, which application is it, that is obviously being used by MAIL and WEATHER?
Could it be FOOTPRINTS? Could it be HTC Facebook? Could it be AMAZON MUSIC STORE? Could it be SPRINT NAVIGATION? Or Qik?
Basically, those are the processes being killed.
The way I found out was killing the killer, and restarting all these applications. All of a sudden MAIL and WEATHER started working as expected. Mail refreshes every 5 minutes.
Maybe by killing one of those "dummy" programs above, also kills a thread of hidden processes being used by Weather and Mail.
Interesting.
(maybe somebody knows about this already here or in another forum).
I just can't get the mail app to sync. So the live tile has never shown anything, and it is on. It just never syncs! I have to check mail from my phone or open the gmail in the desktop browser. This is bad as this is my only computer.

no, I just checked again. They are on.
Do you use any mail accounts other than Gmail? If so, and those aren't working either, then there's some other problem.
However, if it's just Gmail, you can think Google for that. They disabled adding new devices using Exchange ActiveSync connections to Gmail a few weeks ago. Feel free to write them a nasty-gram about it; it seems a pretty dickish move on their part IMO (note that existing connections still work, they just don't allow new ones). Not that they're obligated to provide any such service, but bull**** like this is why I don't rely on "cloud" services to any extent that I can help it; when you don't control the service, you are at the mercy of service provider's whims.
As a work-around, enable IMAP access in Gmail settings, and then manually add the IMAP/SMTP account to your Mail app on the tablet. That should work fine, but you'll lose a lot of the integration benefits; things like contacts and calendars and such will need to use different services instead of all going through EAS.

I have a yahoo account on it too. But that also doesn't work.
Have you tried syncing manually using the Mail app? Open the app, right-click or swipe from top or bottom, and select Sync. If it doesn't work, you should get an error message.
For what it's worth, my Surface RT happily syncs both my Gmail and Yahoo accounts, in addition to several others (my work account which is also over EAS but to an actual Exchange server, my old university account which is the same, and a personal IMAP account).

Yes, most of the time that works. I don't get an error message. But sometimes I know I have an email, because my phone will tell me. But I will hit sync like five times and I can't see any new emails.
started having the same problem
my mail app has also started having syncing issues... this is with both outlook and gmail!! it was working very well 3 days ago... does anyone have the same issues?!
I have the same problem. Mail stops auto syncing and live tile no longer works. Only way to fix it is to uninstall the app, reboot, reinstall and then it works again... for a while then stops syncing again =(

Read the end of this article - particularly if you are syncing gmail from other devices in addition to the Surface - as you will be hitting the gmail single POP access problem: http://woodygems.wordpress.com/2007/01/24/hello-world/
When my 8010 note downloads email using the standard email app it syncs with every mail left on the email servers. Despite searching I cannot find a way to have it download only new mail since last connection.
Currently I have 5 email accounts and all sync up to two weeks worth of mail each time I connect
Is there any way to set this to new mail only? I need to leave the mail on the servers as I am away fairly often and might miss some if I clear it earlier than two weeks.
Also weird is that the trash empties OK but shows 23 on the folder!
What settings have you used pop or imap and what email service are you using
There is option in options which tell how back do you sync and also to certain extent there is a setting on your server tell what to sync
Thanks for reply.
I'm using POP for all accounts.
The only thing I have found is Email Sync mail On/Off.
Where are the Options you refer to?
I'm using JB UK version.
ok I cannot pin point the exact settings as I am using active sync but I used it earlier just go to the settings there is in the accounts the duration you want to sync also if you are using gmail please change settings in gmail also.
I really had loads of issues with syncing with pop account on stock email app and hence I configured activesync which works same like gmail app
Thanks, but I don't think there are any additional settings in normal mail, hopefully someone will correct me

Look on the mail sever side for options to download only new messages. It's really the mail server software that keeps track of what you've downloaded. I would look for settings options labeled pop mail settings or something along those lines.
Don't think that would work, because the server would stop other machines from downloading that were not up to date. AFAIK this is normally set on each email client.
Anbody find a solution for this?
Just can't believe there is no way to set the sync to download only once.
Are there any other mail apps that have intelligent sync settings?
Gettings mail that I downloaded two weeks ago repeated every day on the note 10.1 just sucks!

try Aqua Mail. i found some nice features in it.
free version gives you up to two accounts and enforces a signature.
OK, I have 5 accounts on my Note so free one is not usable
Secondly can you confirm that it solve the sync problem I am trying to fix?
I have a Microsoft Exchange account that I use for calendar and contact (I don't use it for email). When I set this up as a corporate account syncing just doesn't work. It synced initially although some of the calendar events were missing. I ended up erasing contact and calendar storage data to start fresh and neither the calendar nor contacts will sync from the exchange account, even when I try to manually sync them or reboot the phone.
I'm using a new phone that came as a replacement for my original phone that died. On the first phone I had this issue on 4.4. On 4.4.2 it completely failed to autosync but would at least sync manually and on reboots.
But on my new phone on 4.4.2 it won't sync at all.
I'm wondering if it has issues with some versions of Exchange or if this is generally broken for everyone.
It's hard to believe Google hasn't bothered to fix Exchange support going on 4 months now...
I have access to my exchange data through Touchdown but it has it's own sync bugs which they are clearly not interested in fixing as I reported them repeatedly over the last couple of years and it doesn't integrate well with the rest of the phone.
Works fine for me. Is sync set to push?

No problems here.

Strange. Yes, I tried it on push initially then also every 5 minutes.
I did find when I created a new contact on the Nexus 5 then updated it in Outlook the update did sync back to the Nexus 5. I'm wondering if the account manager keeps track of what's been synced and only updates changes rather than checking for differences. In that case maybe by deleted my contacts and calendar data they become out of sync with the account manager and there's no way to restore the data except by deleting and recreating the account... I'll have to test that.
During the initial sync, though, I had 3 all day recurring appointments for tomorrow and only 2 of them showed up in the Nexus 5 Calendar. So something went wrong and the syncing is definitely not very robust to any issues that can occur.
I use my exchange calendar all the time with no issues... Updates both ways immediately.
Deleted and recreated the account. There's one recurring (yearly) appointment today which does not appear on the phone calendar no matter what I do (it does appear in Touchdown's calendar). Impossible to tell if that's a unique appointment not being synced or more likely there are others.
Added some test appointments and contacts in Outlook. They sync instantly to Touchdown. They do sync to the native apps but only if I manually force a sync through account settings. Otherwise they won't sync at all.
Changes I make on the phone's apps do sync immediately to the exchange server.
I'm surprised noone else is having these issues. Must not work well with some aspect of the server I'm using. But Touchdown doesn't seem to have this issue so I blame Google...
Mine works fine as well. I have two accounts set up. One on Exchange 2010 and one on Exchange 2013. Both account calendars, contacts, emails, tasks, and notes sync just fine. Could be the server that you're connecting to. Do you know the version? Are there any administrative restrictions or policies running? You can also check the Mobile Devices section in OWA and make sure you don't have too many in there. If you reach your limit of devices it won't let you set it up at all.

Ha ha. So quick to blame. If I were pointing fingers, i'd be pointing them at you. Chances are its your config.... if you're going to blame Google, you have to be willing to factory reset and do nothing other than set your exchange account up. Then you must work with your IT department to rule out your exchange config. Only then can you blame Google

I checked the OWA options and removed some old entries but I don't think that's the issue or I wouldn't be able to setup the account at all. I'm currently well under the limit.
Strangely, it seems to be working better now. There's still that one appointment that will never sync but after I enabled email syncing (which I don't actually need) it now does seem to sync updates in both directions automatically within a few minutes of any change. I've also noticed when I'm in the account settings to do a manual sync after quickly passing through contacts and calendars the syncing icon lingers on email even though it wasn't checked.
I'm wondering if there's a bug where updates are tried exclusively to email syncing. If anyone has some time, perhaps you could try deselecting email syncing but leave contacts and calendar and see if when you make a change it will automatically sync.
I've also sent an email to our server's admin to inquire if there's any known issue with kit kat and our server.
Our server version is: 14.2.318.2
Will the native client sync all past appointments or is there a hardcoded limit? I'm wondering if the failure to sync that one appointment, despite it being an annual recurring appointment, might be because it was created too far in the past.
As far as I'm aware, you need email syncing regularly for calendar to sync

Is that a requirement from Activesync or Google's implementation? I realize my use case is probably unusual but if you need email syncing for any syncing to work then the UI shouldn't allow you to uncheck it.
Under Touchdown I'm not syncing any email folders, but I don't know if it's still technically doing an email sync to 0 folders...
Anyway, if that's the source of the problem I don't have a problem enabling email sync.
I appreciate everyone's help!
I've not had chance to test it on kk, but certainly on aosp jb on my s3, I had to have email syncing. I preferred to set email to manual sync just for when I was afk, but even then no calendar updates. It had to syncs regularly to get updates
Nowadays its force of habit to.let it sync without notifications. Maybe i'll test next week

If it's corp email then have you made sure your exchange admin hasn't restricted connectivity to certain device types? Or that they have EAS policies around PIN/encryption that you haven't applied or aren't supported by your device?
Because EAS works fine on the N5. And EAS is MS's documented standard which is often very badly implemented by certain vendors (I'm looking at you, Apple)

I've problems with only some of my contacts. They initially syncing all fine from the server, but changes on some contacts on the phone won't be pushed back to the server.
I use an Office365 account with exchange 2013. And it seems to work with contacts that have no birthday entry, but not with the ones that have a birthday. Maybe this is not the cause. But the only difference.
I use CM11 nightlies on my N5, but had the same issues on N4 Stock / CM10 and N5 Stock.
Another problem is that I cannot enter debug mode any more with *#*#36245#*#*. Maybe some has an idea how to enable this.
Thanks for any help.

As I mentioned above, after enabling email syncing I don't seem to have problems with syncing changes but I did notice several yearly recurring appointments will not show up in the Nexus 5 calendar app.
It's interesting that you mentioned an issue with contacts that have a birthday field as the appointments that are not showing up (at least the one's I've noticed so far) happen to be birthday reminders of contacts that have a birthday field. They have been edited but may have originally been created automatically from the contact birthday entry. In my case, the contacts with the birthday are showing up but not the related calendar entry. I haven't tried editing one of these contacts to see if there are any syncing issues. Perhaps I'll test that.
I wonder if there's a bug related to birthday appointment links?
I've noticed 2 other issues:
1. Despite having selected to sync all days only the last week of appointments sync to the Nexus 5. It's not quite clear if this setting is for email only or everything including calendar. I often find it useful to look up past appointments for reference of when I had a meeting or event but the calendar won't sync into the past and also won't search into the past using the server when online so there is no way to look up past appointments on the phone.
2. There appears to be a daylight savings time bug with recurring all day appointments. I've found that such appointments show up as 2 day events in the calendar on days past the daylight savings time change. When looking at one of these appointments they are scheduled from 11pm on the day they should appear to 11pm the following day. The shift of 1 hour back makes a certain amount of sense in terms of when the appointment should start relative to today's time (like a timezone shift) except while the hour gets shifted back 1 hour from midnight the day does not (if it were relative time it should start at 11pm the prior to the scheduled event not the day of). In any case, the display should be properly adjusted for daylight time so this doesn't happen. Also, recurring events that are not all day show up at the correct date and time and non-recurring events whether or not they are all day also show up correctly.
Hello all I have been a long time XDA member and took a leave of absence due to MS not really tailoring to Windows Phone.
I just picked up a S8+ and it is a nice device but I am struggling a bit and remembered how hopeful this site is.
Is there a single email and calendar application that can handle all my email accounts (live, office 365, work exchange)?
In addition I seem to be missing a good bit of contacts as I have my primary live account and gmail account on the device.
I can tell you this is a nice device but coming from Windows phone setup is tedious I have to figure out my facebook contact sync and WhatsApp sync as well.
Any tips from a convert would be greatly appreciated
Thanks for all your help my new family
I have been away from xda for quite sometime because I had an iPhone, switching to this phone also was a bit painful but it turned out to be easier than I thought.
You have Gmail, I'm using it for my work email (Microsoft), Hotmail, Yahoo and my Google account. It's works very nice.
As for the missing contacts, you can go to settings and accounts and add any account you want, open it, and activate contact sync. Not sure if it can sync Facebook contacts. Or you can just try from the Facebook settings
Hi there,
im using Outlook for syncing mail and calendar. However using samsung calendar app you have everything synced and good to go. Also, you can sync your exchange/office365 to show your contacts in contact list.
What have I notcied, that Microsoft have much improved their apps on Android. Take a look at BlueMail as well - it syncs gmail and office and any other mail you need.
For Facebook i'm using Metal as I hate stock facebook app.

Yeah but the native Samsung Email and Calendar apps don't grab this information. In addition adding new contacts is such a pain as you have to do it directly in the outlook app instead of the default phone/contacts app. I have had this issue numerous times.
I hope they are able to fix this as I shouldn't have to migrate all my shared calendars to google from outlook.com to be able to work with them.
Great device but these items should just work and I think it may just be a Samsung issue I am working on getting another device to test.
As amon87 said BlueMail is the way.
