I'm new to AT&T and the Samsung Smart Phone world so I thought I would share this and see what the community has to say. From my experience with Sprint and HTC I noticed that receiving new Android updates was like waiting for hair to grow. Granted some grow faster than others, it is still time consuming. With my HTC Hero back in the day... I NEVER received an update. With the EVO3D I saw ONE update. With the HTC EVO LTE... I didn't have the phone long enough to care. Feel free to add your experiences and theory on how long it'll take our S4's to snatch the newest update of 5.0 or, at the very least, 4.3.

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is expected to be released in October 2013 and reports say that the upcoming software version will support older and low-cost devices to prevent fragmentation between Android smartphones and tablets.
Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie and K Release Build
WallStreetJournal reported the Google's upcoming plans include a "K release" in fall as the company "wraps up development on the next version of Android." "K release" refers the famous Android 5.0 aka Key Lime Pie which will refresh the Android OS environment. Recently, Google released the source code of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean featuring major bugs fixes and some additions not found in previous Jelly Bean versions.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition and Snapdragon-powered variant were found compatible with Android 4.3 and will be available soon to other flagship devices such as HTC One and Sony Xperia Z in 2013. Moreover, Nexus devices, including Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 could receive push update of Android 4.3 once Google officially releases it publicly. The iteration of Android devices are now being finalised by Google.
Older and Low-Cost Devices will be Made Compatible with Android 5.0
Included in the report released by WallStreetJournal, Android 5.0 will be made customised to suit low-cost smartphones and not exclusive anymore to high-end devices. Google has been making a lot of noise to bring affordable Internet connection to billions that currently do not support proper Web connectivity.
This may also mean that older phones released 2-3 years ago will become qualified to run Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. It will incredibly increase popularity and market share of Android devices if the major software update has a tailor-made version for low-end smartphones and tablets.
Android 5.0 Opens Door for Expansion
Google is thinking to expand again and plans to target other electronic devices such as appliances and computers; making the Android OS limitless.
"With the next release of Android this fall, Google is also moving more aggressively to use the software in additional kinds of devices, including laptops and appliances such as refrigerators," included to the report of WallStreetJournal.
"According to Google, the majority of Android devices currently being used rely on a version of the software released in 2011 that has fewer capabilities than newer releases. Some industry experts say that the most recent versions of Android are better for higher-end devices than lower-end or older one that had, for instance, 512MB of memory."
The only way to solve this crisis about compatibility and stability among Android devices is to come up with an Android OS version optimised to all kinds, whether high-end or low-end.
The Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie major feature would be the "optimised factor" not found on earlier versions of the OS, and its release, according to Google, would be a "remedy to the issue of RAM restrictions for older devices and freedom of developers to optimise their apps for all Android devices no matter what version it runs."

This is great, I know a bunch of guys with smartphones from 2010-2011. Those phones aren't really good with RAM management given the low amount of RAM they work with. Mostly 512mb. We'll have to see what carriers will do about updating these old phones. It would be really nice if they did get the update. And as for us with the higher end devices, It'll mean a snappier, smarter and better multitasking OS. :good:

this reminds me off that Google article were they promised to support device for at least 2 years(I think)to help with fragmentation and that never happened. I tend to believe the industry not really interested in keeping devices software current because so many of us buy the new phones to get the new software.

A lot of things including memory management, predictive touch recognition and response, cleaner, faster with smoother transitions and visuals, improved battery consumption management, probably Nougat 7.1.1 or 7.1.2 and more.

There are a few people who already tested a beta version with 5.1 and reported this. I guess they are telling us the truth.
This is answer from EMUI FB:
Hi Krešimir, EMUI 5.1 will not be offered to devices that have EMUI 5.0, EMUI 4.1 or lower systems for now. Please rest assured that some of the new functions from EMUI 5.1 will be built into a debugged, featured-enhanced version of EMUI 5.0 that will be released after June 2017. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Stay tuned.

that makes sense since everyone on 5.1 beta currently reports EMUI 5.0 in their about phone
Any idea about the build numbers on those phones?
As long as there are updates, I don't mind EMUI 5.0 ?

I've seen Chinese betas mentioned with Mate 9 MHA-AL00C00B203-log, B205-log and B206-log.. but these are beta builds and most likely dont resemble any public release build numbers... tho going off the current available update build numbers, seem to be on par.. would assume a final build in the 200 number range would be the new EMUI 5.1 features build (and like mentioned, probably still show 5.0 in about phone).
I don't get it. P10 and Honor V9/8 Pro are on EMUI 5.1 and with the same hardware (Kirin 960 CPU/SOC, etc.) as Mate 9 , but Mate 9 which is flagship device by price and by marketing materials/adds distributed by Huawei is not getting full EMUI 5.1, but just some of the features of it and stays on EMUI 5.0.
Where's the logic in that?
why does some random number matter to you?
If it has all the same features and benefits as 5.1, why would you care if its called 5.0. 5.1 or 69.99999???

I don't talk about the number, I was reading that the difference is not only the number. I think that Huawei has stated that we will get SOME of the features of 5.1, not all of them.
EDIT:
Huawei statement from few post's back:
"Hi Krešimir, EMUI 5.1 will not be offered to devices that have EMUI 5.0, EMUI 4.1 or lower systems for now. we'll just have to be patient and see what shows up..

Used to get the same problem with Samsung devices, the S models would come out with a specific BloatWhiz UI and then the Note model would come out a few months after with a newer BloatWhiz UI but the S models would not get an upgrade to that new UI version... rinse repeat for next years models... Same UI version would stick around, but you would get new Android version and Security patches until such time the next model of that Type would get released, then they'd normally hang you out to dry on new major android versions, but get some security patches...
From what I've read on beta stuff tho - we are getting functionality atleast, if not all of 5.1..

There you have it. This is exactly the problem in Android world. If you buy a device from major Android manufacturer, you can be pretty sure that the support will start to slow down when new flag ship device is launched.
2 years is really the maximum support time for Android devices, except for Google Pixel / Nexus devices.
I don't like Apple or the iOS devices but I have to admit that the support in iWorld is in much better shape than in Android world.
I hope this will be addressed in Google level.
Edit. And Huawei is one of the worst manufacturer in what comes to updates. Two updates in 6 months (even security fixes) happens only for new device launched. Then the support will be gradually ramped down and good luck for getting security updates.

Well.. it's really the manufacturer at fault and shouldn't really fall back on Google as they create the software and it's up to Samsung, Huawei, LG, etc to all support it on their devices so if they choose not to do any future updates then that's their choice.. you can't compare to iOS/Apple because their software is only built for their devices and no other manufacturers can make an iOS based device period, so to that degree you could compare it to the Nexus devices or Pixel which run the vanilla Android and get constant upgrades because that's devices that have no UI slapped on top of it and supported by Google and manufacturer hasn't got to make its own custom update with their UI etc

True but you got me wrong
I didn't blame Google for this situation but I hoped that Google would use its muscles to solve the situation.
It is really 3rd party manufacturers fault and they should improve the situation as well.
It's also very common to compare Samsung, LG and Huawei to Apple because they are all trying to sell to same customers.
It is true that Apple is making the HW and SW and that gives a huge lead in integration and updates. However, Google is also providing monthly security updates and it is 3rd party companies responsibility to publish those security updates for their products.
This is not happening currently, or it takes ages to have the update (Huawei)
Owning Google pixel or Nexus is clear advantage, but I would like to see that other manufacturers would concentrate more to serve existing customers.

Agreed 100% here.. but where I am sitting, I bought my Huawei Mate 9 Pro in Feb, and I know the device was actually out in December, but that aside, I have now managed to pull 2 OTA updates (first when I first turned on the phone at the store installed B139, second was B156 shortly after), and a 3rd is pending authentication (B181, just this weekend) - to me thats quite a few updates.. I don't recall getting 3 updates within first 3-4 months from Samsung when I had my Note 4 (I could be wrong here, but don't recall this amount of OTA from device launch... purchased it within a few weeks of release date, they stopped updating android when Note 5 landed, security updates kept coming tho). I'm more than happy with Huawei so far, and their efforts to release new updates to fix issues people are seeing - tbh I never had many issues and the ones I did have got fixed with the first 2 OTA's.
They do need to work on security fixes and Google should push them to get them out there... case in point - my Samsung Note Pro 12.2 has not had an update in months, and is still on Android 5.1.1, and of course Samsung will not even bother with any new builds, and probably won't get a security update for another 3 months... it's very disappointing that I spent over $1k on a tablet, which will not "officially" run Nougat, tho it probably doesnt need it the device runs perfectly fine as it is - tho we always want the latest and greatest..

Do you think this phone will get Android P?

For cost reasons, I'm looking to buy a phone that was released in 2016 with a good camera, that is reasonably priced and will be supported long enough to get the Android P software update.
As the XZ came out just before Nougat was released, it obviously got the Nougat update and will likely get Android O as well.
The XZ will reach its two-year mark in October 2018, which will probably be just after Android P is released.
How likely do you think it is that the XZ will get Android 9.0?
If you think it will get it, do you think it will be delayed more than six months?

Nokia 6 updates? What we know so far

Let me list what we know so far about updates and future plans of HMD Global for its Nokia 6:
1. Android O: Recently after a launch event in Indonesia, some YouTuber from Indonesia interviewed the executive "Mark Trundie" mentioned all of the existing Nokia Android phones (3,5,6 & 8) will get Android O before the End of 2017, to be specific in his words "before Christmas"

2. Bootloader Unlock: in a recent twitter conversation between NokiaPowerUser and Mikko Jaakkola, CTO of HMD , Mikko mentioned that HMD Global is willing to unlock bootloader if its devices, one at a time, and as Nokia 6 is the only cell which is currently available officially in USA it seems it will be the first followed by others.

3. Android P: At a launch event in Philippines, the executive of HMD in a press Q&A event clearly stated that all of Nokia Android phones, even the Nokia 3 will get Android P next year as HMD Global aims to provide customers a device long lasting, Up-to-date and Secure providing 2 years of OS and Security patches Updates always in time.

Thank you
Thanks for collating all the info.
Haven't been too enamoured with how Nokia has begin their Android project so far. They're too vague with info unless pushed and haven't been as quick with the actual main updates as per their promise ie. No Oreo or 7.1.2 updates. They also haven't released any pc recovery tools for general customers or unlocked the bootloader for more technical minded ones.
Maybe their Dev teams are are still finding their feet and they'll be up to speed by next year.

You are Welcome bro.
As for PC tool, i may have some news which is not confirmed yet so will not disclose right now, but we are pretty sure that Nokia will come up with a tool whenever it plans to start unlocking the bootloaders of its devices, because we all know why we need unlocked bootloader and that also needs a proper PC tool to go stock again. Which is also a consideration to Nokia.
For updates, as per me, i will be ok if we jump straight to Oreo instead of 7.1.2.
Its actually the os update which we care the most, right? As per their constant promise, if we consider they will release Oreo before Christmas then we have to see what happens in next 80 days.
Nokia 6 has been seen on GFXBench with Android 7.1.2, which means testing is underway.
It is reported that Android 7.1.2 Nougat enhances notification stability, improves fingerprint swipe performance, and gives alert on battery usage alerts among other features.
Source: NokiaPowerUser
Good to know they're testing 7.1.2 . The 7.1.2 uodate was a decent update when lineage incorporated it if I'm remembering that right. Performance did improve with it on the old phone I had. Not that this phone is slow. Despite all the criticism from spec readers about the processor I'm really happy with how smooth it runs. The 6 is an excellent phone
Nobody's mentioned the touch latency with any of these Nokia's. The Nokia 6 touchscreen has a pretty good touch latency response. It's one of the better Android phones I've used. Not like the Nokia 5 though. It's touch response was noticeably bad. Just thought I'd mention that for no reason! No reviews said anything this.
Aside, hopefully the Dev side of the phone speeds up soon.

Rumours of Nokia 7.1 Plus?

https://pocketnow.com/nokia-7-1-plus-rumors
Sorry if this has already been discussed but wondering what this would mean for current 7 Plus?
Poor commercial decision in my opinion. Instead of building a solid user base they are releasing way too many phones. Their update system is a mess and with so many phones the already poor customer service and tech support will only get worse.

Does the Nokia 7 Plus support Project Treble? I never quite found out. More Nokia phones might actually make the platform more accessible. An open bootloader would help a lot in developing for the whole range if the newer Nokia phones do support Project Treble.
