[Help] Just bought an S8. Almost bricked it (Substratum-related) - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Backstory
I bought a brand new S8 two days ago.
I decided to give Substratum a try. So I got both the app and the Samsung add-on.
I then downloaded and installed "StatusBar Icons (+extras) for Samsung." I toggled all or selected all the options for the overlay. I restarted my phone and it worked perfectly.
Then I was notified of a system update, so I downloaded and installed that as well. This was when the issue occurred. After the reboot, a popup, "System UI has stopped." kept showing. The screen is black. I couldn't do any actions. I couldn't turn off my phone. If I switched to safe mode, the issue was still there. The only thing I could do was restart my phone but of course that didn't fix the issue.
The Fix
I did a bit of research and found that one of the possible reason was changing the system nav bar. I am certain that this is the cause because it's the only "out of the ordinary" thing I did on a brand new phone.
There's some good news: I fixed the issue by restarting my phone and immediately pressing power button + volume up button + Bixby button together. I was able to factory reset my phone from there.
Concern and Questions
I'm pretty bummed because I absolutely LOVE theme-ing and customizing my Android phones and this experience has pretty much made me paranoid from doing anything to my S8. :crying: :crying: :crying:
Is there an exact cause for this? How do I avoid this issue from happening? Is Substratum still unstable for Samsung devices? Is there still hope? lol
Thank you for your help!

No, substratum is stable. You should have uninstalled all overlays before the system update. If you don't, systemUI can crash.

My bad!! I take it firmware update = system update? (facepalm)

Yup. It may be overkill on my part, but I uninstall any overlay before I update a "substratumed" themed app as well.
Check out the substratum threads in the themes forums - they know their stuff?

I tempted fate on both my S8+ and new Note 8, accepted a system update on both without uninstalling the subs and they didn't have any issues - subs still installed. IMO the subs are just apps and not going to have any issues, at least I didn't.

Will substratum work with go launcher z?
Is substratum just a particular look or something more?

[Q] Security Pattern/PIN disappeared

This morning I came into work and as I unlocked my phone it did NOT ask me for my pattern. I have a number of Xposed modules working, but none have been activated in the meantime of this happening. When I go to Security, my last option is still set, yet I'm not asked to enter any of the option whens unlocking the screen.
Anyone had anything like this happen? I really don't believe I've changed any settings between the security working and not working. This is very troublesome. I'll do a complete reinstall of everything if I have to, but I wanted to see if anyone has heard of this in the meantime.

Never happened here. Try to uninstall Xposed Framework then reboot and try again.

It's somewhere in the Xposed modules. When I uninstalled the framework, it asked right away for my PIN. I'll go back and see which module is giving me the problem. So far I have installed:
Blurred System UI
Burnt Toast
Chrome New Tab (Xposed)
Complete Action Plus
Gravity Box KK
Notification Count
Shaky
Shortcut in App Info
Unicon
YouTube AdAway
I know I changed a setting (I think in Gravity Box) that makes the lockscreen always require the slider. Then it would ask me for my security PIN or Pattern. But I've had then running for a few weeks now. Blurred System UI is a newer mod for me and I was trying out a Translucent mod for KK as well yesterday, but I uninstalled that.
We'll see. Might even go to the L Preview for a while. It worked great for me, but I missed the Xposed additions.
Thanks for the advice. Good call.

It seems it was Shaky that was causing the issue. I've uninstalled it and won't go back since I don't use it much.

Strange behavior.

So... I had no problems with my(second) idol 3, all was well and dandy. But recently the colours on the screen became more saturated, almost like an amoled display, followed by a significant decrease in performance. Nothing is changed, no root no nothing. Totally stock, except for the launcher. That would be Nova launcher and I used it since the day I got the phone with no problems. What the hell happened and has anyone else experienced this?
Random restart happened today and all my wifi passwords are lost.
in which app the colors are saturated? stock gallery app?
All over the phone. Not just the gallery. Perhaps the gallery is the fault for it?

i asked the gallery 'cause on my idol mostly (but not the only one) the gallery app that distorts color badly... have you tried a CM rom? in my case there is no color distortion on CM at all so the stock rom obviously has the wrong color balance settings
check this
https://www.reddit.com/r/idol3/comments/4g9ld9/distorted_colors_in_stock_gallery_app/
Yeah, I know about the gallery app too. Can't really install a CM rom due to warranty, it's only two monts old. I'm sure that the problem can be solved with a full wipe but that is not the answer I'm looking for.

I doubt that a wipe can solve errors like this. I did it a few times, restored firmware with Mobile Q, color distortions on stock ROM never disappeared. Best experience was with Color Balance app from Play Store. It's just too expensive for my budget.
I have tried wiping cash but to no avail. The performance has slightly improved during the day but has returned back to garbage now. This is so annoying. Is there a way to check the "settings" for this without root? Maybe something in build.prop or such?

without root you can't do any really useful. if you don't want to install cm, check this app (earlier i made a mistake with its name):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.quickdoc.screenbalance&hl=en
If it can stop color distortion, at least you'll know that the phone hardware itself is correct, just the stock rom sucks.
-edit-
just read the new symptoms, at first i'd make a full reinstall with mobile upgrade q, if it doesn't solve anything, i'd go to a cm rom.
The problem seems to have fixed itself. I don't know what happened. All it's buttery smoothnes has returned after an accidental tap on the gallery app. The saturation has returned to normal too. I'll check out the app link for good measure. Thanks for all the help. How does one close a thread?
Guess I spoke too soon. The phone just did something of a restart. The whole boot animation happened but none of my open apps(gmail and chrome) have closed once it booted. Very strange.

that's normal, opened apps don't disappear from 'recent apps' after a reboot on lollipop.
however a reboot just from nowhere isn't normal.

I did not know that. Guess I will have to do the mobile upgrade q procedure. I'll give it a few days before I do that though.
Welp. I've given it some days and the problem has not returned. Also, a fun thing i didn't mention. This replacement idol 3 is not exactly the same as the previous one. For example the camera lenses had a green tint on the first one, but on this one they're blue. And the logo niw sits flush with the surface instead of being pushed more inside.

System UI Stopped after new update

Hello,
I have just updated today to new version of firmware.
After the update all I can see when the phone restarts is "System UI has stopped".
Only other thing that works properly is always on display and partly edge screen.
The phone works only if I set dpi to over 390, under 390 it is always displaying that System UI has stopped and I can see only black screen.
Does anyone have any idea how can I fix this issue so I can set my DPI back to more useable value?
I already disabled the extra dot in the nav bar in settings. I am not sure what else is new and may be causing that.
Also problem with system ui has stopped
I get the problem when i go landscape in any app. System ui has stopped.....
Happens after software update that i got a few days ago...

That same update broke my mobile data.
Factory reset didnt fix it for me but if i were you id try that first.
Short of that (and what I did) was flash the previous firmware version in odin to fix it..
Im going to try and flash the new update in odin to see if it messed up my phone again as sometimes OTAs can cause issues.
Sent from my S8+, S7 edge or S6
Got to the app uninstall updates and clear cache
Did you have the SystemUI Tuner installed? I have/had it installed, and now anytime in landscape it crashes. Still having the issue, and done everything short of a factory reset.

Try this: going into Settings -> Display -> Navigation bar and just change the Button layout. It worked in my case, or at least so far.
I enabled the top option for the navbar that gives you the option to hide it and it seems to have fixed it for me.
Edit: Between this and switching the button positions the problem has gone away completely no matter what settings I use.
Had it installed, had to factory reset. sucks.

Same exact thing happening here on my Note8 but how did you get to any settings with a black screen? I'm stuck with only AOD and edge screen working. T-mobile OTA update killed my phone! pretty pissed.
P.S. My signature needs to be changed now that I have a stock T-mobile Note8

Can you let us know how you did this? I have substratum installed, but I can't get past the black screen and error message. Which "uninstaller" did you get and how did you uninstall substratum while the phone was borked? Are you rooted? Thanks in advance...

How did you uninstall substratum (and it's addons)? The same thing has happened to my Note 8, but I can't uninstall anything because of the black screen and system ui error. By the way, thank you for posting that substratum was causing your issue. Without that knowledge I would still be scratching my head.

Seeing as how @oldkingclue has a total of 2 posts, they're probably not coming back. However, you, @superhero7, have been around for a while and can maybe help. Did you figure out how to solve this issue? There are many people affected by this same error. I also have substratum installed, so it's likely causing my issue. The problem is that I can't find how to uninstall it because of the black screen. Any suggestions, besides factory reset? C'mon....be our "superhero" and bail us out! :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Substratum Theme Broke Phone/ Hot Pink Text Glitch - LG G6

Basically, I have no backups, and today updated to Android Oreo on my LG G6. Installed Substratum and Andromeda, so that I could get a theme installed. Bought a dark theme, and followed the instructions to install. Selected 8.0 (though it only listed 2 phone models neither of which was the g6) and started the process. The installation somehow botched, and it never properly installed the substratum theme at all, and after reboot reverted back to the original system theme I had on (and was mostly happy with).
That said, it left certain things on my phone permanently hot pink. Now I literally have for instance in Quickpic all text is completely bright hot pink and it's absolutely insufferable. I've been trying to fix this, remove the themes, revert the settings somehow, for hours. I'm borderline ripping my hair out and I'm miserable thinking about the only feasible solution being a factory reset at this point.
I literally have no idea what to do, and I've tried absolutely everything. Please someone PLEASE tell me there's a way to revert this horrible mistake I've made and stop substratum from causing my text to be hot pink.

I have not tried that yet and have no experience with TWRP. Could you guide me on what to do, and explain what exactly I'm doing? A brief search made it seem like it required rooting the phone which I can't do on this device, and also seemed like it only really offered full factory reset. Is it somehow supposed to just nuke all traces of Substratum?

I didn't know you weren't rooted, Then yea in order to make use of that file you'll need to be rooted as well as having TWRP. What the file would end up doing is uninstalling it completely, Now that I know you can't do that, How did you originally install Substratum?
I looked up some tutorial using another program "Andromeda" that allowed installing and using substratum rootless.
Currently the only thing still affected that I know of is Quickpic the app having all text hot pink. I could get used to it and pretend its just a valve game missing textures... Or somehow someone who knows more than me could find a real solution.

Question OneUI crashes

Does anyone else have crashes for oneUI ? Fort me it happens like twice a week on my exynos model.
I'm so disappointed with this phone to be honest. It's stutters now and than and to many crashes in various apps.
I'm assuming must of it is due to Samsung chip.
I have also whacked for nightly restart even thought it's stupid i think.
Did this happen from day one?
If not it's likely an app, update or settings issue.
Still that's pretty unstable... it could be a hardware issue.

try factory reset with disabling of trashy preinstalled apps (disabled 144 on mine ), then install your apps (not restore)
adb app control
It wasn't happened on mine ( SD variant). Try to factory reset the phone, download and re-install all of your app instead of restore them (even with the phone setting). It may help to solve issues
I appreciate the tips but seriously guys, factory reset and redownload of this many apps i have is like a weeks work! I only download the stuff i use (and 99% payed apps as i hate ads). Not to mention i might loose some data thanks to how Android save data. This is not 2010. I hope modern phones are more stable then that.
If this was iPhone then i could simply restore easy but with Android its not as simple.
If there is no other way i wait for some more samsung firmware updates.
It has not happened this week so lets see.
I notice some specific apps are specially bad like LinkedIn hangs allot. Tapatalk wont work even with this forum and gives error. Maybe some of these apps make the launcher go nuts....
Try using a different launcher, to see if that stops the crashing
