So I got my Nvidia Shield a while back. The first thing I did when getting it was installing all the updates. Eventually after the final update was installed, I did a full factory reset of the device.
I have hardly any apps installed besides the essential Google applications, but my Nvidia Shield still feels remarkably slow. Chrome is practically unusable, and switching between apps is not a pleasant experience at all. That said, benchmarks and games perform wonderfully, which has me a bit puzzled. There doesnt seem to be any problems with memory leaks as there is plenty of RAM available. I do tend to restart it quite often just to see if it makes a difference, but I doesnt really feel like it has much of an impact.
Does anyone here have similar issues at all? I have worked with Android quite a bit and never have I experienced a system run Android so much worse than you would expect given the hardware specifications. My Nexus 10 feels a lot more snappy in general use.
Thanks for any help
All I can say is that I have a similar experience to you, although I have quite a lot of applications installed. I don't have any solutions for you, only to wait and hope that nvidia optimises the software for the hardware in the next update (Android 5.1 hopefully)
It's up to you, but I will recommend you to try this:
1) Unlock bootloader and Root (If you haven't).
2) Use CWM in this thread as custom recovery, I know TWRP is fancier but has some issues while flashing and wiping stuff, tending to not cleanly install things.
3) Try @BitOBSessiOn custom CM12 ROM here.
4) As stated there, avoid CM gapps, we don't know why but they are culprit of making the system lag A LOT making it almost unusable as you posted, specially if you frequently use Facebook and Chrome. Instead use the minimal gapps posted there.
5) Really important step: Activate Developer Options and disable all animations, lollipop men leak resides on a function called when the system draws them, so the only temporal fix for this is disabling them, after that, reboot and kill any bloatware app on options > apps (G+, FB, Messenger, Vine, Chrome, etc)
6) Profit
I've had this problem too.
I just turned off battery saver. It got too low, automatically turned on and I didn't realize but when I turned it off, it got way faster.

The Lollipop memleak bug is pretty easy to detect though and that's not what's causing the performance issue on the Shield Tablet. At least not in my case. While I would normally be the first to unlock my bootloader and port CM to my new device, I would want to keep my tablet stock.
Im glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing issues so Im going to assume that there's nothing specifically wrong with my device in particular. I guess Ill give Nvidia one more chance to rectify performance issues with their next update, otherwise I'm selling the tablet and buying a Nexus 9 or something else.
I have the same experience. I have flashed the latest recovery image, unlocked and rooted. I have disabled apps I don't need and does not have a lot of apps installed. It is unbelievable slow. Like stated above Chrome is almost useless and switching apps is painful. I am using my Nexus 10 too, the Shield tablet will collect dust until there is a fix released.
If I have the time I will try flashing CM12 but I rather stay stock.
You should give it a shot...
Chrome lag totally solved. Most Nvidia apps work. Only deal breaker is the controller, but a ps3 controller can be paired via BT using sixaxis app.

This has almost convinced me to switch to cm12.
If it just werent for the loss of Dabbler, some other Nvidia apps and the fact that I have a looooot of apps installed...
Not worried about gamepad, because I use an ipega 9023.
I may have found the holy grail of slow laggy freezy hell! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.memory.manager under tasks go to 3 dot menu at top right choose minfree manager pick the top silder and max it out. Hit apply, let app stay in background and proceed with speedy happy days.
I don't know why but it won't keep the settings after boot no matter what I do but I can live with it now and don't fantasize about smashing it with a rock anymore.
I should mention short of non-stock Nvidia roms I tried EVERYTHING twice! This just works for 3 days now perfectly. I actually might even trust it in a week for actual work applications. My poor old Nexus 7 gen one was totally owning the Shield except for game until now.
I have a LTE USA model running rooted 4.4 Kit Kat. I would guess this will work with 5 as well.
Please remove. (Double post)

Root your tab. Do a nandroid backup, backup your apps with titanium backup, flash cm or team eos rom (gotta plug my stuff, restore your apps with titanium. If you don't like it, restore your nandroid and you're back like nothing ever happened.

And GRID also works fine. The only deal breakers (and the ones every dev is working hard to make em work on AOSP) are console mode and the controller wireless pairing.

That's contradictory. I have a really tiny LMK value for foreground apps (foreground= 8mb, Visible=16, secondary=32, hidden=64, content provider=96, empty=128 ) so apps in the foreground are killed only if system goes under 8mb of free ram, and have no lag, but I'm on CM12.1. So I really don't know how this is working but I'm glad for you. Although it may drain your battery faster BC android is killing apps as soon as they go to the foreground to keep that amount of free ram and is using more CPU cycles to load them back when you need them again, that's what I get. But anyone with more knowledge maybe could guide us why this is working???
Interesting, it's working but I didn't even try any other variables. I will try your settings and get back. Needless to say battery life is next after usability.

Ok tried your suggestion verbatim. It immediately was back in useless mode as I have been calling it. Without a reboot it took me at least 15min to get back to here. Still could not type so minmanged back to previous settings and its running. Weird.
My test would have been run Facebook, chrome & this app with poweramp music. Never got halfway before it got all James May on me. Are we running the same tablet? Any thoughts on why we could have opposed settings and get different successful results.

Also when it slows down it gets warmer the settings I'm using leave it pretty cool in comparison.
I'm on stock 5.0.1, 32gb SD + internal memory almost full. I experience some lag mainly with chrome and switching app. Yestetday I tried to set the power saver to "max performance" and the everything seems much smoother..
Make sure you SD cards are formatted with NTFS. exFAT is fine for 32gb, but if you have a 64GB or higher, the card needs to be formatted in a PC using NTFS...
Don't ever let your main ram storage memory get below 500meg.
If somehow you run out of memory,, let's say sub 10megs then all manner of weird things begin to happen including reboots and app crashing. You can jam that external sd1 card full however.
I reset mine several times and tried everything I saw in these threads about the lagginess and stuff.
In the end, I found the solution. I returned the NST and exchanged it for a new iPad Mini 2 32gb Retina Screen... No really.
I love Android on the phone, but it just seems that the tablet arena isn't anywhere near as far along and sorted out yet. Buggy, almost too many options, so you wonder how much love each model gets from the manufacturer, etc... I hate to have a new tablet for $300, and the only way to get it to run the way it was supposed to run out of the box, is to void the warranty, root and install a custom ROM on it, and give up some features in the process.
I like ROMs for things that they do above and beyond the stock experience. I don't feel that I should pay that much for a device and have a ROM be a requirement just to get it to run decently...
So, for my tablet needs, I had to go to the dark side. Good luck!
I will still rock my Note 4 and don't see myself going to Apple for my phone needs any time soon, but for a general purpose tablet for Netflix, email, browsing and basic games... I agonized for hours over this but in the end I just pulled the trigger and exchanged it.
Hello Everyone
I'm ready to pull the pin on converting to GPE 5.1. I'm not that worried about being up to date; I sort of just want a ROM I don't have to worry about.
My concerns are very basic: I want a rom that I can set to cruise control.
Ideally, the ROM should be fast and easy to use. I like the idea of GPE being always up to date, I like flashing new ROMs, but what I know about GPE is that the experience isn't as nice as Motorola's stock ROMs.
My questions to those who have used both Stock and GPE (and perhaps other, custom, ROMs) are: Is GPE noticeably slower or glitchier than stock? Is GPE updated regularly? Do regular updates mean I have to give up root? (I don't mind not having root, considering this is an official Goolge ROM) Is there anything else I should consider?
I don't want to worry about updating, or reinstalling apps on my phone and the whatnot. There is no Arch Linux version of Android I can use, but maybe GPE is the closest thing.
Thanks!
IMO GPE 5.1 is somehow faster than moto edition. But it has the low memory killer issue which I believe there is no workaround for that, I already asked for some help, actually found a flashable zip for a "solution", but nothing. So you won't be able to multitask the proper way, since every time you minimize an app when u bring it back it opens all over again as if you closed it. Battery life and performance are great except for that issue. I believe I'll use blisspop from now on if I don't get this issue solved for tomorrow. As for updates I'm really not so sure but Bliss pop is using 5.1.1 already with this and other little big fixes. So for your concern about cruise control this may not be the best way as it will be closing the app regularly. Cheers.

Does it close apps that are supposed to be continuously running? Like playing music, or a podcast? The Moto G doesn't have a ton of RAM and from what I can tell I'm almost always running on full usage anyway. If it's closing apps that I want to use even while they're not front and center, that'll be annoying.
I don't need a ROM that is 100% up to date, I was just hoping that the GPE ROM would see regular updates that would be both stable and come with an expected frequency(I'm cool with an OTA that happens ever 3-6 months), without breaking my phone or deleting any of my personal data. I love custom ROMs, but I've come to a point where I just want a ROM I can rely on for long periods of time. With that said, you recommendation for Blisspop is welcome. Looking at the ROM (I haven't kept up to date with custom ROMs latetly) it seems pretty legit. My issues with CM12 (when I last used it probably a year ago) was that it was unstable and drained the crap out of my battery. Are those issues gone? I expect them to be. My battery life on the Stock LP ROM is outstanding. I can go about 2 days or more without charging, with about 3 hours of screen on time (I normally use my phone to listen to podcasts and audio books, reddit when I'm bored, so most of the time the screen is off anyway.)
you are correct, if you do a lot of multitasking i would not reccomend gpe 5.1 cause youll be facing that stupid issue. apparently this sorts the issue out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60203758&postcount=1363 but to be honest, it would not work for me, another workaround was found but it did not work either. worst thing is that i tried to go back to blisspop and i could not make it... :crying: i got an error while installing blisspop error executing updater binary in zip twrp. So I´m kind of stuck with this stupid glitch... fortunately everything else works awesome.
BTW, which LP stock are u using? is it retail brazil 5.0.2 ???

Yeah, I'm on Brazil 5.0.2. I don't hate it, but I like the idea of being a bit more up to date, and a ROM that I know will get an update. I don't multitask often, but there are things I've seen in ROMs before that really upset me with auto-killing.
hey man, after some hard work and research i could go back to sweet blisspop rom. I tell ya good battery life, great performance, perfect multitasking (mention since that was what i was complaining for the other rom), and stability. no fc´s no random reboots, no crashes... beautiful. totally recommend it and plus its 5.1.1! maybe the only thing i can complain about this rom is ambient display, currently or apparently not working... maybe it will be re-enabled in future builds. plus its got some nice tweaks and features oh and if you like changing the look of your phone, its got themer, just get a cm12 theme from play store and change your entire ui. hope i helped u make up your mind regarding gpe stock and custom rom. cheers

Actually did it mate, values never sticked. tried different apps, like rom toolbox, kernel adiutor, and minfree memory manager. none worked. gave su permissions apply on boot. nothing. but thanks 4 the feedback, moved out to blisspop which runs 5.1.1 issue is gone.
So, I'm obviously not remotely an expert when it comes to Android mods, but I'm finally fed up with being stuck on Android 4.1 - since it doesn't appear we'll ever get any upgraded qwerty phones ever again, I figured I'd try diy'ing it.
I have successfully flashed TWRP, rooted the phone, and installed what I believe(?) to have been the most recent version of CM11 (I figured it'd be cleanest to keep the phone closer to what it was designed for - I've seen tons of apps require 4.4 at minimum, not too many that require 5+): cm-11-20150626-SNAPSHOT-XNG3CAO1L8-moto_msm8960_jbbl.zip. Was the most recent version I could find, anyway?
I booted it up and for the most part, everything seemed to be working. Everything except Chrome, which crashes reliably and immediately. I tried clearing all the caches (the app's cache + data, and the phone's, from recovery), uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, I tried the beta version (crashes), I tried a fork, Brave (crashes). Other browsers are working fine, but I like Chrome.
One weird thing I did notice: I was thinking it might be a gapps issue, but weirdly, the Play store, gmail, maps, everything else just installed and seem to work out of the box before I did anything with gapps? I did also try flashing the most recent base 4.4.4 gapps zip from what I could tell (gapps-444-base-20170209-1-signed.zip), but I'm not sure how to tell if it actually did anything? It said it flashed successfully, but (other than having to wait for all my apps to recalculate because I cleared all the caches), nothing noticeably seemed to change on the front-end as a result, and yes, Chrome still crashes. Should I be using a different gapps install than that for the Photon Q? Or anything else I should check/try? Thanks!
Yay! Answered my own question, with sufficient digging!
Answer seems to be basically: the newest version of Chrome (v55) exposed some sort of weird incompatibility with CM, so the easy fix is just not to use it, at least for now. I sideloaded Chrome v54, and it stopped crashing, yay! Source: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70762641&postcount=198
Just FYI, the latest version available for this device is CM13.
They are working on Lineage.
Edit - seems you found the CM13 thread already
Yep - I'm glad to see people other than (and smarter than) myself recognize the Photon Q's unique place as being the final and, sadly, best qwerty slider available for our use, and that it therefore needs to be actively maintained even if Motorola won't... I just figured it'd be better to use an OS closer to the one the device was intended to be used with. Once I'm done testing CM11 out on my old half-working phone (re-purposed to a test phone) and push it to my new fully-functional one, I will probably at some point upgrade that first phone to the latest to try it out (probably once a Lineage build comes out, so I can be on a build that's actively being maintained). For right now, though, I figured I'd stick with CM11. Any case, looks like CM13 exposed the same Chrome issue, anyway.
Are there any ROMs that work well/ respond to touch quickly?
I recently pulled out my old tf201 to try to start using it again. I was able to get the last version of HairyBean working.. But it is really really slow. Like I'll click a button and maybe 30 seconds later it will respond (or tell me the app isn't responding). I mostly use it for my kids to watch shows. Once the show starts it works great, but just navigating the menus and apps to get to the shows can be excruciating. Also, I know thisdevice has WiFi issues just due to the all metal construction, but I feel like the WiFi is even slower than what it used to be when I actually used this 5 years ago or so.
I flashed a couple of other ROMs and either had a lot of bugs, or couldn't get root, or something. Does anyone have any recommendation for a ROM that works well and is actually usable? Thanks!
Anyone??!! I recently put kashmellow (tduros android M). Gapps no longer works so I didn't install that. Many people say its fast w/no gapps. But mine is barely usable. So slow. What the heck happened to these devices? Thing used to be a beast! Believe it came with ICS
I use KatKiss timduru site and xda thread, it is Android 4.4.4 ROM and it is quite fast an somewhat usable. I also have old Google Play Services 10.5.42 that mostly do not crash so even Play store works. However many new apps either cannot be installed or crash because of missing NEON support, sometimes older apk versions work. Basically I keep it for lot of old stuff that still works but don't update anything (or keep Titanium backup of apk+data and often restore back to old version when newer one crashes or needs newer play services).
I recently installed a Custom Rom and the truth is that it is giving me more problems than solutions.
I would like to know which is the best custom Rom to install it and that I can use the tablet 100%.
What do you recommend?
Preferably android marshmallow or higher
Which custom rom did you install?
Hi
At the moment i testing out following Roms:
Stock 5.4 (debloated by myself)
This is the latest Rom from Nvidia which has all of the oem apps and features this Tablet offers. But on the downside it has slowdowns and freezes. In my case i debloated the Rom by myself where i deleted apps and the systemapps like twitch, squid, fallout and ota or feedback for example. With this the device is barely useable with some slowdowns and freezes but way better than before.
LineageOS 14.1 by Saint2k
This is a stable, fast and secure Rom. Secure because it get almost every month a security update like on a new device and is the perfect Rom if you use it as a normal Tablet and play Games from the Playstore. On the downside Nvidia Games doesnt work and the Old Controller is just useable with the USB Cable + OTG Adapter. Also the Console Mode is buggy and some say it has a bad Batterydrain at idle what i cant comfirm yet.
AOSPExtended 5.8
This Rom is based on Android 8.1 with working Hardware Acceleration. But it has the same issues with Nvidia Games and the Controller and Consolemode. This is the more stable Version of the AOSPExtended Roms.
AOSPExtended 6.7
This Rom is based on Android 9 and the Nvidia Games App works but only when the App Signature is deaktivated with LuckyPatcher. For the GAPPS you also should use the OpenGapps Nano Pack instead of the older MindtheGapp. This is the less stable Version i also had 1-2 Restarts and 3DMarks had some Graphicissues. But apart from this it is a interesting ROM where i hope the Developer still is working on
One thing to the DRM Issues:
Every Rom also the Stock One is affected from this. Its because our Devices has Disconnected from the Widevine Service run by Google without a warning or a reason.
That means no Copyright Protected Medias like from Netflix are able to use atm.
I hope this was helpful for you and dont hesitate to ask if you have more questions.
i am also curious about this! looking for the best ROM for my k1

If you flash Magisks it has a few different modules that fix DRM so Netflix and other streaming apps work correctly. I just learned about them the other day when I was checking out some options in Magisks Manager.
As far as the best custom ROM goes I am going to have to go with ASOP 6.8. The reason being is it is the only ROM that will let my PS4 controller connect wirelessly. Also, it is the only ROM that screen casting is working for me on. However, it does not work when I use cast by swiping down on the screen and selecting it. I have to download a 3rd party app to get it to work. I found one the other day that worked perfect for allowing me to watch Cinema apk movies on my TV. I ended up factory resetting my tablet though and now I cannot remember what app it was.

Cool that means you be able to watch Netflix, Amazon, ... In Full HD ?
Because i also tried out the liboemcrypto disabler on my rootet oem tablet and i was able to start at least the netflix app but it wasn't going above 540p i would say because the Widevine CDM Securitylevel is now L3 before it was L1 with only Current HDCP Level stated as "Disconnected"
But i try out the second modul with DRM in name when the Tablet is done with charging

I tried the 5.8 aex 5.8 and it worked very well, until playing a google play game I realized that the tablet was locked and I closed the apps. Apart from that the screen mirroring does not work, it freezes the image.
Now I have installed the 14.1 , it works very well, the same game freezes, but it takes a lot longer. And this standby spends little battery, but on consumes that gives taste. And with this screen mirroring does not work with a smart tv, like stock.

What I'm looking for in a rom for my tablet is: to be able to play google play games, something demanding (like when I buy it), also be able to use screen mirroring to watch videos and movies on smart tv. And if it's possible for the battery to last.

Hi
In your case i would give the Unofficial LineageOS4.1 from Saint2k a try. Its fast, reliable, and secure because of the almost monthly security updates. Also Games from the PlayStore shouldn't be a problem. I also have a mirroring option which gave me no issues so far.

I currently have the 14.1 that you tell me installed. But screen mirroring doesn't work for me.
And demanding games, it slows down a bit or even after playing for a while, it closes my game.

Ok i tried the screen mirroring again and you are right it also crashes for me when i start it direct with the button from the dropdown menu. When i use it to cast the youtube app it works fine for me and thats the only thing i use it for atm so thats the reason i didnt notice it.
About the demanding Games i play occasionaly COD Mobile with the Tablet. Its really slow at starting because most of the time the game does updates and loads a lot of annoying ads
It just needs a bit of patience but when you actually in the match itself it runs just fine and it doesnt crash a lot for me.

for example, he played clash royale and the application closed 2 times.
Then the other day playing the game of the 7 deadly sins, it closed after 5 minutes of playing.

I recently upgraded from a 2 year old 14.1, to the latest. I found on the androidfilehost for the-saint2k sometimes had the latest on the right side, under recent files. I checked now and its updated to the latest
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297059
I found the kernel from BitObession
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sh.../tweaked-kernel-nvidia-shield-tablet-t3069776
K12-002 works fine and fixed my battery drain during sleep
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=282989
I dont use screen mirroring, but i do use HDMI out for use at school and that works fine. Nvidia console is still included in this builds, and I'm glad its standard.
Now I've noticed Kernel Aduitor is no longer available in the appstore, and is over 2 years old. Is there a better kernel auditor app for changing the governors? My tablet is a e-book reader currently, I could happily downclock it to get more out of the battery.
I hope you find your solution. I wouldnt expect too much more development for this (in before lineageos16.0 becomes the bees knees for this device).

Ok sounds for me the Games running out of memory and the ROM cant handle it. You could try to change the Low Memory Killer Settings. For this you need Root Access and with the Kernel Manager App from the PlayStore you can easily change those Settings it even have some Presets as shown on the Screenshots.
It also have Settings like KMS which reduce the Memory Usage too and you can set the Read Ahead Buffer Size.
I think it may need some tinkering with those settings to find the perfect ones.

I agree with Scavenger87, I've also tested Saint2k 14.1 & 15.1, AEX 5.8 & 6.7. By far the most usable is Saint2k 14.1 the second time I've loaded it up (so far).
AEX 5.8 has outstanding deep sleep battery life but the random reboots to the OS or TWRP in the middle of doing something eventually had me loading up Saint2k 14.1, which was stable but ate battery at idle despite running the BitOb K12-002 kernel.
So I tried Saint2k 15.1 but had a lot of problems launching apps and also RR, then wiped & flashed AEX 6.7 which seemed to have even more problems with app launching. Both were quite laggy compared to LOS14.1 and AEX5.8 when the apps finally started to run.
Today I reflashed Saint2k 14.1 with BitOb K12-002 kernel and so far the device feels like is should - clean and snappy. It just finished being fully charged so I'll get an idea of sleep battery consumption over the next few days.

I would like to make an installation as clean as possible of 14.1.
What do I have to clean when I reinstall the rom from twrp?
And if I have to do a separate installation to make it work better, when should I do it? Thank you
For a complete wipe down you should go to TWRP -> WIPE -> Advanced Wipe and Wipe Everything apart of the Micro SD card for obvious reasons
Then install the newest build of the 14.1 by The-Saint2k which you can found here : https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=8889791610682953905
The Filename says its from the 6 October 2020 which wasnt revealed by The-Saint2k in the Forum and i wasnt able to test it out myself but i never had any new Problems with his ROMs.
I dont get the second question what do you mean with seperate installation ?

Some zip file that improves performance, or the operation of the tablet or rom.
Ok i don't have any expirience with such improvement files but i guess as early as possible maybe like the gapps direct after the rom.
Which files are you mean ? And did you try to test the Games without those packs ?
I mean because you facing instability issues..

My installation was only of the rom and gapps.
But there are times that they recommend you install some more package from twrp to improve the functioning of the tablet. As for example the one from aex 5.8 there is one to use fast loading (or so I understood).
