[Q] GPE Vs Stock - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone
I'm ready to pull the pin on converting to GPE 5.1. I'm not that worried about being up to date; I sort of just want a ROM I don't have to worry about.
My concerns are very basic: I want a rom that I can set to cruise control.
Ideally, the ROM should be fast and easy to use. I like the idea of GPE being always up to date, I like flashing new ROMs, but what I know about GPE is that the experience isn't as nice as Motorola's stock ROMs.
My questions to those who have used both Stock and GPE (and perhaps other, custom, ROMs) are: Is GPE noticeably slower or glitchier than stock? Is GPE updated regularly? Do regular updates mean I have to give up root? (I don't mind not having root, considering this is an official Goolge ROM) Is there anything else I should consider?
I don't want to worry about updating, or reinstalling apps on my phone and the whatnot. There is no Arch Linux version of Android I can use, but maybe GPE is the closest thing.
Thanks!

IMO GPE 5.1 is somehow faster than moto edition. But it has the low memory killer issue which I believe there is no workaround for that, I already asked for some help, actually found a flashable zip for a "solution", but nothing. So you won't be able to multitask the proper way, since every time you minimize an app when u bring it back it opens all over again as if you closed it. Battery life and performance are great except for that issue. I believe I'll use blisspop from now on if I don't get this issue solved for tomorrow. As for updates I'm really not so sure but Bliss pop is using 5.1.1 already with this and other little big fixes. So for your concern about cruise control this may not be the best way as it will be closing the app regularly. Cheers.

Does it close apps that are supposed to be continuously running? Like playing music, or a podcast? The Moto G doesn't have a ton of RAM and from what I can tell I'm almost always running on full usage anyway. If it's closing apps that I want to use even while they're not front and center, that'll be annoying.
I don't need a ROM that is 100% up to date, I was just hoping that the GPE ROM would see regular updates that would be both stable and come with an expected frequency(I'm cool with an OTA that happens ever 3-6 months), without breaking my phone or deleting any of my personal data. I love custom ROMs, but I've come to a point where I just want a ROM I can rely on for long periods of time. With that said, you recommendation for Blisspop is welcome. Looking at the ROM (I haven't kept up to date with custom ROMs latetly) it seems pretty legit. My issues with CM12 (when I last used it probably a year ago) was that it was unstable and drained the crap out of my battery. Are those issues gone? I expect them to be. My battery life on the Stock LP ROM is outstanding. I can go about 2 days or more without charging, with about 3 hours of screen on time (I normally use my phone to listen to podcasts and audio books, reddit when I'm bored, so most of the time the screen is off anyway.)

you are correct, if you do a lot of multitasking i would not reccomend gpe 5.1 cause youll be facing that stupid issue. apparently this sorts the issue out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60203758&postcount=1363 but to be honest, it would not work for me, another workaround was found but it did not work either. worst thing is that i tried to go back to blisspop and i could not make it... :crying: i got an error while installing blisspop error executing updater binary in zip twrp. So I´m kind of stuck with this stupid glitch... fortunately everything else works awesome.
BTW, which LP stock are u using? is it retail brazil 5.0.2 ???

Yeah, I'm on Brazil 5.0.2. I don't hate it, but I like the idea of being a bit more up to date, and a ROM that I know will get an update. I don't multitask often, but there are things I've seen in ROMs before that really upset me with auto-killing.

hey man, after some hard work and research i could go back to sweet blisspop rom. I tell ya good battery life, great performance, perfect multitasking (mention since that was what i was complaining for the other rom), and stability. no fc´s no random reboots, no crashes... beautiful. totally recommend it and plus its 5.1.1! maybe the only thing i can complain about this rom is ambient display, currently or apparently not working... maybe it will be re-enabled in future builds. plus its got some nice tweaks and features oh and if you like changing the look of your phone, its got themer, just get a cm12 theme from play store and change your entire ui. hope i helped u make up your mind regarding gpe stock and custom rom. cheers

[ROM] Modded Super D with dwang's kernel

As I`ve posted before some code in most new kernels is causing some issues while using my car's handsfree set(vw) I get random disconnects.
So as I like Super D and I like latest dwang's rom. I mixed both of them and took the best of both roms. What you get with this rom is latest Super D with the best kernel that's working for me.
i don't take any credit from it, I'm sharing a good setup working for me. I just took all the work done by people involved in Super D and Dwang's rom. Apart from that I also included advanced launcher themed by eesel with cyanogen's tray shape.(thanks rogro82, cyanogen and eesel)
Link:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V5H2P9IE
Trying will report back
thanks for sharing friend!
Edit:
1. Speed is good
2. Sometimes launcher lags in sweeping
3. No MT anywhere, well thats the Kernel thing
4. sign-in page force-closed on me many times but got over with that
5. Killing all the apps gives 60 MB free, wwhile on SD default kernel we get around 45 MB, this is great!
6. application response is very very quick
7. wall-paper gallery is older
Thats all for now....hope it helps those wanting to try this ...
Cheers,
I am not having those issues. Have you wiped everything before flashing? I didn't have any force close in the whole friday.
I have to research how to solve multi touch issue, because dwangs rom supports it
Wow, superb work. I may test it asap.
Hows battery life compared to stock SuperD? That was the thing put me away from Dwangs (and the random reboots).
Thankyou!
sounds interesting.

-no idea then, coz mine asked for re-inputting log-in information again and again. although everythhing was setup (meaning, synching was running while it was still bugging for signing in to google after I did it once)
Coming to your question, ya I always do full wipe, no matter what.
Your Mod definitely runs fast, congrates, and the force close is only stopped once you ignore signing in request and press Home button - done!
MT is an issue fr me, not that I use it while browsing web or Gallery very often but I like to have it for the sense of completeness
Good Job, I am now back to SupD tho.
P.S. Battery was not checked since I only stayed on this rom for less than an hour, not enough time right?
cheers
Battery life *seems* good so far
Multitouch is working indeed BUT not in the browser nor the photo gallery, I still have to look for more info. If you want to try it run MT visualizer. I 'm sure it's something about multitouch being handled in different way by donut or eclair.
I just flashed it without a wipe.
It works fine for me so far, but it should be mentioned that it is the white version
But i like suprising graphical changes

60 MB free? "
It use ramhack, compcache and swap?
BTW.. seriously.. The kernel have ramhack, right?
Now I'm using the rom SuperCSDI V1, and with the SupSetup I can turn on or off APP2SD.
I think it's a great thing, because installing apps on NAND they run a lot faaaaaaaaaaster! So I install default apps in NAND, and other apps in ext partition.
If I found a way to do it in this rom, I'll try it
PS: If you don't use compcache or swap and it have 60mb free on killing.. ramhack can be removed to use 3D application

OMG i have the same exact issue with the random disconnecting. its been prevalent in every rom since cyan's 4.2.6 (and dwangs, super D, etc). I've tried pushing the older working "bluetooth.apk" from 4.2.6 to the newer builds with no success at all. Did you recompile the ROM to make it work? The perfect ROM to me would be Super D 1.9.2 with no ram hack and working bluetooth.
good work though, im willing to sacrifice 3D games for working bluetooth though so i may give this a run... *subscribed!*
sounds good flashing
nice Rom, but it only has 3 screens, and i don't like the launcher. Despite those things its great, i did a few tests
benchmark
lowest - 625
highest - 1084
ram
after killing all of the tasks i had 50mb

What hands free set do you use?
I've read that you can solve it by editing /etc/bluez/audio.conf as follow
enable=
Disable=Headset,Gateway,Source,Control,Sink
uncoment #Master=true and replace it by Master=False (mind the caps)
It's working for BMW sets, give it a try may be you can keep 3d.

I drive an audi A3, and the OP drives a VW which most likely uses the same BT system. I just finished pulling the audio.conf from the phone and will edit it like you said. *fingers crossed* will update tomorrow...
UPDATE: The bluetooth fix mentioned by xabierd seems to have fixed my random disconnecting issue. didn't drop the connection once during my 30min commute to work. i normally experience at least 2-3 random disconnects every time i drive to/from work. yay!~!!
I'm glad I helped you, I am the OP too

why thank you....alot of work went into it...making sure code was done properly as well as building with gcc 4.8 for rom and sabermod 4.8 for kernel really finely tunes and optimizes the rom just perfectly
Now that it's out into the open!! The best ROM used since forever. Get 16k+ scores on antutu and whatnot. Very stable and have had no raging temperature sores. Definitely the best ROM out there. Period.
Credit goes to R3V3NT3CH for all his hard work and time spent on the development of what might be just one of the best phones with a physical keyboard till date..

There actually are a few glitches that I'm noticing, now that I've had time to play with the phone. Is there a way to disable certain services / features to get the phone to run a little better? What I'm looking for is something very bare-bones; I don't need any bells or whistles. For example, I've disabled all the animations that I could, but are there any other tips to make the phone a little more responsive?
Another problem is that the phone doesn't want to update to a newer LS, it says "Invalid ROM (liquidd2lte) & device (apexqtmo) combo!"
Any ideas?

the reason it wont update through settings is because although the relay is a d2 variant phone it is not unified for any of the d2 variant updates....hence why for now its unnoficial and not unified or seperately branched on liquids end for updates.....as for wanting something very bare liquid is not meant for this as it has a huge multitude of customizations....try using slimkat and flash my kernel over it and im sure youll find what you are looking for

Hello and thx for the nice ROM, only KITKAT makes my phone useable.
Unfortunately i have some issues.
1. No deep sleep after charging, i have to reboot to resolve that.
(performance menue changes: cpu limit to 1458 on boot)
2. Email only imap and no way for option dont delete from server?
How i change to some kind with no delete from server or better which app work?
(k9 app don't have this option, gmx app have this option but activate the option do exactly nothing,
the mails are still deleted).
3. Gallary don't show photos that took with app Ucam, same if photos send by bluetooth.
I have to reboot to see the photos from the last session (media scanner only scan at boot).
4. TrackID with optical issue, i report a video if nessesary and i inform me about HowTo take a on screen video.
5. No undervolt possible, the performance menue told me my device doesn't support undervolting. Checked that behavior with some tuning tools, same issue. All tweaking tools tells me Kernel doesen't support undervolting so i deinstalled the tools without changes. No worries, i have some uv experience with xperia pro
I installed your new kernel yesterday (B14CK1RD v. 1.1) and repplaced the original one from LiquidSmooth but unfortunately the issues are the same.
Only 1. and 3. are realy important for me.
and again, thx for the nice LiquidSmooth

Need help finding a ROM for my OPO (maybe)

I've spent literally days and days reading through threads about various ROMs, I'm hoping someone who has more experience with OPO ROMs than me can point me in the right direction - looking for a solid ROM with these features baked in:
Good ad blocker
Privacy guard
Best or close to best battery life
Can set system font
Solid : doesn't crash or have nasty wakelocks / memory leaks - want a phone that spends most of it's time nicely SLEEPING when it's in my pocket
Most of the ROMs I've looked at seem to be missing one or more of those basic features? I was thinking CM 12S will be good, but then was reading about layers and they were saying the CM theme engine is not so good in terms of security or efficiency compared to the layers theming system?
I like CM 11S pretty well at this point, but I realy want to get behind (support/use) a great ROM that comes with something like AdAway pre-installed because I want to see good ad blockers included (built into) more ROMs and I want to support that. It's deeply discouraging to me when I can't find a great ROM with ad blocking baked in. Same with Privacy Guard - I don't think any ROM should come without Privacy Guard or equivalent baked in!!!
Thank you so much for your help/advice - believe me, I HAVE searched and read many threads, but I expect there are thousands of other people who have had their OPOs for weeks or months longer than me and can give me some solid advices!
Please resist the urge to simply tell me "Just try ROMs for yourself bro!" - I have done that before (on my Galaxy S3) I probably tried about 30 - 40 diff ROMs on that phone. At the moment, I look and read when I can, but before I flash I'd like to know if there are least a couple that at least have those basic features, and if not, I wonder why?
My best guess at this point is, I will need to stay with CM 11S and ad Xposed? I used Xposed a couple different times, but most recently it broke - the device still works, just Xposed was no longer compatible once it got an OTA update... I haven't put Xposed on my OPO yet as I didn't have much time for making backups/restoring re-flashing the phone in case it gets messed up because I have my kids over spring break for the next week and a half.
The only issues/missing features I'm currently experiencing with 11S are: haven't figured out how to set my system font (or perhaps my old type of font file is no longer compatible?), don't have adds blocked in apps yet, and I want to change the color of my clock in the status bar. I will go ahead and read through threads about putting Xposed on OPO - hopefully it can be added on 11S without causing any glitches?
Oh, and my [stock/unlocked/rooted CM11s] phone is not yet working for LTE - I have Walmart Family Mobile and I recently read that they have begun supported LTE. Sometimes it's just 3G and sometimes it's H+. I will call their support sometime over the next couple days because so far all I did was move the SIM card from my S3 to the OPO and perhaps it's not properly "provisioned(?)" for LTE yet? I say that because I watched one video on Youtube where a guy had to take his OPO to the AT&T store and put his SIM card in another LTE phone, then when he put the SIM back in the OPO, LTE started working on it.
Try Vanir-Exodus, there's a link to it in my signature. It has all those features except setting the system font (which I think you'll have a hard time finding as a stock feature in a ROM anyway), and the battery life is fantastic. Plus, it's mostly original development unlike a lot of the other ROMs out there which just cherry pick commits.

I was all set to try Exodus - but then I read some users mentioning some problems, and I think there was some important feature(s?) I wanted missing, so then I thought - oh, well I'm actually mostly happy with 11s.
The only things missing from 11s for me ATM are 1)haven't found how to change the system font yet,Adaway doesn't seem to block all the in app ads, and it doesn't come with Xposed "baked in".
If Exodus comes with Xposed pre-installed, then wouldn't that let me change the system font?
Basically I want to: set different system font, make the status bar clock green, and not give up Privacy Guard or Profiles - and of course not have to use a ROM with poor stability or poor battery life. My purpose is for the phone to be most enjoyable and useful to use, not to try a different ROM each week and find lots of bugs/glitches/wakelocks/missing features. I went through that with the S3...

Honestly, I haven't had a single issue on Exodus. It doesn't come with Xposed pre-installed, but I'm not sure any ROM actually does. It has Privacy Guard, and it has Profiles. Battery life is excellent and it's as stable as they get.
Blisspop, or basically any ROM with CM themes do let you change the system font (it's part of themes).
like Team Nocturnal's latest ROM. Smooth, no bugs other for me. Never tried to set the font as of yet.
Every 5.1 or higher ROM I've tried had been buggier than EVERY 5.0.2 or 4.4.4 ROM I've tried.
I'm really hoping that some 5.1.x ROM comes out soon without apps crashing, graphics glitches, or wakelock problems.

Which ROMs?
"Setup"? You're not suggesting that I should try without choosing a more reasonable DPI or give up on using the system font that I always use, or put up with ads or wakelocks, are you? Those are what I see as "basic and essential features".
I do "clean" installs and the only app I restore using Titanium Backup is "A Better Camera Unlocked". I use features such as Profiles, Users, and (hopefully) the ROM's built-in AdBlock (otherwise I use AdAway).
If a ROM requires that a third party patch be used to fix wakelock problems, then I'd consider it an "Alpha" at best?

No I'm not suggesting that at all. I use a custom DPI (370). I use Adaway. I don't use a custom font though. Keep in mind that certain DPI's can and do cause major issues, so you might need to tweak that a little. As far as wakelocks go, no, I wouldn't consider them an Alpha at all. Wakelocks can be found in stock ROMs from the major OEM's, and isn't always caused by the system, quite often they can be caused by third party apps, and apps from within the gapps package.

[Q] Memory leak? GPE 5.1

Hi all, been doing some research on this subject, some say mem leak was solved, others say its fixed till 5.1.1... Please, anyone here knows how to solve this damn issue, i think its the famous memory leak, not sure, but whenever im multitasking for example using chrome with like 4 tabs opened up, running whatsapp, winamp, and... facebook, i go back to facebook, the damn thing opens again like refreshing feed from the beginning, freakin winamp closes up, damn chrome reloads the pages as if i was opening again after closing it, and there is a slight UI s%$# that apparently re-opens the launcher (stock), like if it loads all the icons and widgets again. Im really not sure if this is the stupid memory leak thing, but I perfectly remember it also happened on stock 4.4.4, just as it happens here. 5.1 is really good! And having my phone with stock GPE 5.1 battery life and performance are freakin awesome! I dont want to go lookin for a custom rom, not totally satisfied with bat life and perf. Stock is wayyyy better at this. However, on custom ROM I didnt have this issue at all. wtf is going on with stock roms carrying on with this issue. Please help, thanks in advance. This is all I need to get this thing working properly. BTW I am NOT having my RAM consumed when I lock the screen or anything like that. Its just that it appears as if the system cannot hold apps running in the background, when i get back to them is like if i closed them and opened them again. If im using just one app in the backgorund for example whatsapp, this does not happen, and even when i press home, the launcher wont have those stupid drawbacks, everything is solid smooth.
Another thing, not a biggy, USB OTG... I even installed stick mount from playstore but never opens up in ES file explorer, any ideas on that?

XT1032, Android version 5.1, Stock kernel, build number LMY47M.M001
This helps somewhat, but requires a custom recovery (and root if you want to manually edit):

Chrome RAM usage in the latest updates is insane, and Facebook, well.. it's always been a memory hungry one.
I just think you are expecting too much for a 1GB ram device, there is a reason that recent devices comes with 3-4GB RAM

I actually used an s3 mini before this phone, and never had this kind of issues. Its the software gpe 5.1 which has this issue, I read its not only for the moto g and moto g 2nd generation, its several devices. Im currently running blisspop rom with 5.1.1 problem gone. Stock kernel, nothing modified.
Tip: I removed chrome and use lightning now. I've also disabled most of the other play apps.
I've done some RAM stress testing on my stock 5.0.2 Moto G to try and work this problem out. I don't think it's just a LMK issue.
Some of the 'free' RAM in Android is taken up by a kernel cache/buffer which should freely give most of it's allocated RAM back to the system before the LMK kicks in. On an old tablet I've got on 4.2.2 it does just that - if I use the Fill Ram app (find it on the playstore) to simulate extreme low memory conditions on my tablet cached apps are cleared and background apps start to get killed when there is about 60MB 'free' left and the Fill Ram app in the foreground eventually dies when there is around 40MB left. The tablet is only keeping around 30MB aside for the kernel cache/buffer.
Do the same on the Moto G and it's will clear the cached apps and start killing background apps at about 150MB 'free'. The Fill Ram app dies at around 90-100MB. So the stock Moto G kernel is trying to retain somewhere in the region of 90MB for it's kernel cache/buffer.
My guess this a deliberate tuning by Moto for UI performance at the expense of multitasking. Combined with the reduction of available RAM due to the allocation of zRAM swap and it effectively leaves the stock G with much less room for user apps to run in the background or be effectively cached than you'd think for a device with a 1GB ram chip installed.
I haven't really noticed any evidence of the famous Lollipop memory leak on 5.0.2 on the Moto G (it's a system UI leak) so I reckon Moto may have patched it.

While awaiting Android N for our Pure (XT1575)...

I decided to try out simplifying my phone and reduce issues that I've come across when using various custom ROMs, modified stock ROMs, etc... and used the Restore-To-Stock tool found in these forums. I then updated the phone via Settings, About, System Updates... then once that was done (Several times...) I was fully updated and ready to go. I flashed the latest TWRP & then installed the latest SuperSU for MM via TWRP... went into the file system and removed the APPs I did not want or need on my phone, wiped the caches and rebooted... I did this a few days ago and am insanely impressed by it. I forgot what stable and issue-free felt like... There's no fancy custom edits, no oddball quirks randomly from whatever was modified from various ROMs and after I installed xPosed, a few basic modules, setup Nova Launcher and all my APPs (Did a full fresh no restore of anything run through of it all)... I am the happiest I've ever been with my Moto X Pure (XT1575).
Once N pops in, I'll go through the whole process again, of course... but I think I might start sticking out simplified setups from here on out. I wanted to get the next Google "Nexus" phones released this year, but after seeing the Pixels and the prices... no thank you, I'm staying with my Pure for a while. I'm VERY happy with it... Dual front facing speakers are pretty much a necessity now for me. Internal Storage and Removable Batteries (prior to my Pure) are no longer my requirement. I've adjusted to pretty much using Google Drive and Google Play Music for all of my Files & Music with T-Mobile's no-data-cost of Google Play Music Streaming, I download my favorites (All I ever need would fit on a 32GB phone easily)... and Google Photos auto-backup has prevented me needing tons of storage options anymore... Battery you say though? No... I've YET to have a phone I wasn't able to charge on-the-go or even have a battery go bad.
Rambling here, this post was probably more for me than anyone who might read it, lol... I wanted the Moto Z so bad... but if I can't get an unlocked one that has the shatterproof display to use on T-Mobile... I don't see myself getting one at all. I want my next phone to have a fancy AMOLED hopefully shatterproof display with dual-front facing or at least a mod for sound / speakers like the Z and perhaps smaller top / bottom bezels. Not sure if I care about a fingerprint sensor yet or not. Anyway, have a great day everyone!!!
Have you compared debloated stock to tru pure x?
I've been thinking about doing something similar for the last few days. I've been running the latest TruPure since it came out several months ago. It might be the longest I've ever had an Android device without doing a clean flash of something, and things are degenerating.
I've always been a huge fan of TruPureXMM but have run into a few minor quirks here and then over time and definitely feel this is proving to be a much more stable experience. I removed (debloated) pretty much everything TruPureX did when it comes to APPs, but I believe TruPureX had a lot more going on than just that, which is what prompted me to go this route.
Since we're all sort of waiting for the official N, and we all know it won't be here amazingly fast... I've opted for this route to stay with the official run of things until N is stable and available through the official channel. I'll go through the full official update process and then TWRP and Root after... I'll be able to stay away from xPosed at first simply because the only things I'm using now are making MM more like N and I won't need to do that with N. I'm hoping once I can TWRP, Root and debloat by deleting the many APPs I don't like... things will be great!

You've made me interested in trying this out as well. Is titanium backup the best way to remove system apps or is there a better alternative?

What I've always done is go into TWRP and remove them myself. Going full fresh no restore means no real need for Titanium. Return-To-Stock first, then OTA your way up to current... THEN TWRP and SuperSU... then boot in, make sure everything is working and jot down on a piece of paper or Google Keep from your computer a list of the APPs you don't want.
Then power off, get into TWRP and mount /System, go into Advanced, File Manager and within /system/APPs and /system/PrivAPPs (Or something like that, memory just blanked) and find what was on your personal list... enter the folder for it, hit button bottom right, choose delete, done, go back and do the others... then wipe Cache / Dalvik and power off / boot up for the absolute freshest experience you can have with a stock ROM.
The trick is to NOT restore ANYTHING... install all your preferred Google APPs first, do the whole Google Phone install if you removed the stock Phone app, etc... (I remove it and the messenger, and a bunch of other stuff like the gallery, mail, etc... because I solely use Google services now).
I removed my case cover and have been carrying the phone around bare.
It's like I bought a whole new phone.
Have you guys tried a quality AOSP based ROM like Dirty Unicorn or BrokenOS?
Super stability. Nothing at all like running a CM ROM.
Testing cm14 now. Hashbang is doing a great job getting it daily worthy.

10/11 build will I bet. :highfive:
What apps/services did you remove? I'm running stock rooted myself and honestly I only see a couple of things I'd get rid of, nothing that would have any real impact on battery/storage though. This phone's stock ROM really is close to AOSP.
same too what apps did you remove tnx.. im not rooted .. tried uninstalling apps and guess what it got temp bootloop.. did hard reset using stock recovery and got fix again started tru welcome menu.... may i know guys what apps not to unistall tnx
Did a side by side comparison of apps in TruePure and stock. I counted 39 apps deleted from TruePure.
