OK. I use catchall email for my domain but I use gmail (good spam filtering)
here is the problem. the way it works is I create a catchall ([email protected]) and set it to forward to my gmail account.
problem is it ALSO keeps a copy in its own webmail imap account and there is NO way to automatically empty this and using gmail to access it is cludgy at best. The problem is every few months this 500mb mail box fills up. When that happens ALL mail stops as it gets bounced and not forwarded. I have to remember the address login etc.. and manually empty it out.
Here is what I am looking for. a tiny app that I can program with my server user name password etc.. for the imap account.
I tap this app and it just logs in and EMPTIES the account. Completely. deletes everything. nothing else. I don't need to see it or anything (its already been forwarded to me anyway)
this way once a month I tap this app and POOF all the mail saved in the imap account goes byebye. does anything remotely like that exist?

Now that i have "the real thing" i would like to setup my gmail account with outlook mobile so that whenever i am connected to wi fi i can download my messages without having to open PIE. I would also like to do the same thing with my hotmail email account. How can i do this?
Have a look here - and then normal po3 account?

Or here
http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums/pocket-pc-tips/15296-gmail-settings.html
I do have POP setup, but it won't download messages, it can connect, but it won't download any messages. As for windows live hotmail, i cant connect with that either, i think it has to do with my settings under connections, then connections. Like with all the network and dialing rules.
you configure the incoming and outgoind mail right?
incoming mail: pop.gmail.com:995
outgoing mail: smtp.gmail.com:465
options: page 2: Outgoing mail requires authetication
Ok so i now got both working, but my gmail automatically removes my messages once they have been downloaded once. How can i fix that?
probably because there no "new messages" set the "Only display messages from the last "x" days to more days
or unset this option
The option was off, and after it had downloaded the messages once and i tried it again they all went away. My Windows Live ones stay the same though.
prefix your user account name with "recent:"
for example, my gmail account is "baarod" so I use "recent:baarod" and my normal password
see http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=47948&topic=1555
does it need quotes around it? and do i put this infront of the email adress or user name?
EDIT: nevermind i got it. Thanks a ton. Now both are working.
@Baarod
Thanx for the "recent:" tip... this was driving me up against the wall... Have you ever had it that messages you sent from Gmail (sometimes when sent from PPC, always when sent from PC) appears again, from yourself, in your Gmail Inbox?
Yeah. That's "normal" for gmail. Has something to do with it being conversation-based. If you look in gmail through the browser you'll see that actually the same thing happens, your responses to email get attached to the message you replied to.
anyway to turn it off?
Hi people... WM6.0 is bugging me - every time I send/receive it deletes all of my old mail... Is there any way to turn this off?
Thanks in advance!
No ideas?
I have the same issue with GMAIL, but could not find a setting on the device to stop the inbox deletes. Also, the gmail pop3 settings online are not that clear on what to do?
I have the same problem, and the only way I found to keep my important mail, is by moving them to the spam folder...
If you configure the settings for the mail account to download "All messages" then they won't get deleted unless you delete them manually (in which case they'll disappear next time you send/receive). Just make sure you've only got what you need in your server Inbox....or you've got an unlimited data plan as it may take a while to download them all!!
By default, new mail accounts are setup to download "messages from the last three days" IIRC, which is why messages older than that will disappear from the phone's Inbox on a send/receive.

Mark.

gmail has a problem that it deletes any read mail. Kinda sucks, but it happens
In the Gmail options (not on your phone, but on the webpage) you can set it to retain a copy of the mail after POP retrieval.

It's not a GMail problem, this happens with all my POP3 accounts. My retrieval settings are already on All Mail - any more bright ideas?
My sister recent went from a Blackberry to a Thunderbolt. She liked how on the BB she could delete an email off her phone and still keep it on the server and wants to know if it's possible to do this on the Tbolt. She doesn't use gmail. It's a Cox Communications email account. Is it possible to do this on Android?

Stolen from another forum (original post regarded an EVO - but likely applies to all Android OS phones.

Mail accounts use one of 3 protocols: Exchange, IMAP and POP. Both Hotmail (as of a few weeks ago) and Exchange use over-the-air (Active) sync technology so when you delete a message on your phone, it's removed from the server and thus your client program as well (web/Outlook). IMAP also supports a similar 2-way update.
In order to only delete messages off your phone but not the server, you need to set up your mail accounts with POP instead. POP downloads a copy of and sends mail to/from the server -- nothing else. Hotmail supports POP but your Exchange server may or may not (a lot of larger companies policies do not). You'd have to contact the Administrators to find that out.
If they don't allow POP on Exchange, then ask if they can forward a copy of your mail to another public mail service, like Gmail. Then you can add the Gmail account to your phone via POP.
Remember, if you still want to sync your Contacts and Calendar with Exchange, you need to keep those and just uncheck Mail instead of deleting the Exchange account entirely.

My 2c:
Not sure if it will work - I personally just delete on the fly, be damned the server. However, when I had an old LG v11000 (Envy Touch) I had the VZW email service on it - and even if I deleted from the phone, it was sitting on the server when I logged into Gmail. It was set up "POP3" style.
IF you go under mail/menu/more/settings/send & Receive you can check the box that says "delete mail on server" to turn it on or off. I turn it off so that it will leave a copy on the server but remove it from my phone.

I am having the same, or a similar problem. On my PC I use POP3 to access my mail; the ISP recommended using IMAP on the HTC (with different "in" and "out" mailbox settings for the HTC IMAP i.e. on the HTC two different settings for in and out). Was working fine but then found that messages I had received on my HTC were not appearing on my PC when I got home (my PC had been off, usually it is on, syncing every 2 minutes). I think this is because I had deleted them from my HTC in the meantime.
Trouble is, there is no setting ""delete mail on server" to check or uncheck under mail/menu/more/settings/send & receive, so I cannot follow the above advice. Only Mail size limit, Update schedule, Download options (it's not in there), Auto download message, Folder to sync, Reply with original text and Always bcc me.
What am I missing please ? Software says it is Android 2.3.3.
Thanks in advance.
I use K9 mail and go to more/settings/fetching mail/when I delete
I am flummoxed. I changed the HTC settings from IMAP to POP and did some tests; nothing being deleted ie still available on server. But when I looked at "Send and receive" options, I now have a list with 2 new option, inluding ""delete mail on server". It was not there before. Honest !!
I have been bak and re-set the thing to IMAP, and then the option about deleting from the server disappears again. So I am not going mad. But why should the options be different ?
low on memory
My father In-law has a Thunderbolt and is constantly having a low on memory issue on his phone.. When I go and look at his app's, his exchange is hogging up 2.6 gigs of memory while everything else (APPS) is using only KB'S of memory nothing big.. How would I be able to transfer his exchange email to the SD card,, He has a 32 gig card with 26 gigs of it being free.
Thanks for your help.
the issue is prevalent on all androids: when using htc's mail to add hotmail (or sounds like any email), the synchronization is not quite right... if you have viewed or deleted an email, it is not reflected on the mail server and therefore the next synchronization you will be notified of "new mail" even though you have just read/deleted it.
everyone is blaming the fact it is a POP issue and the solution is to use Exchange or IMAP. there are MANY hits on google with supposed solution. however when i tried them out, i am still getting that annoying problem.
Use K9 mail. I have never had a phantom new mail with any of my non gmail email.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using the power of the dark side.
+1 to K9 mail
tried k9 for 5mins
it doesnt work very well with hotmail (according to the warnings) and i recall i had a problem with hotmail would put up captcha (the image verificaiton) and hinder k9's ability to get mail.
Go to your Hotmail account email option on your computer not your phone.
look for "POP and deleting downloaded messages"
There are 2 options,
Don't let another program delete messages from Hotmail. (If your other program is set to "delete messages from the server," we'll simply move them to a special POP folder. They won't be deleted.)
Do what my other program says-if it says to delete messages, then delete them.
Select the second one. It works for me. Your problem should go away.
For some reason Hotmail Exchange ActiveSync is not the true Exchange ActiveSync.
ah thanks. i recall they recently implemented that feature... that explains why my hero (which was working) also suddenly broke.
edit: it works. all fixed.
now i cant be any happier with my inspire (battery could always be better)
My stock email client on my Nexus 5 was working perfectly fine with my gmail. I had a break in at my house and my tablet was stolen. I changed all my passwords to prevent any illicit activities. Since I have changed the password, the stock email client has stopped working with gmail. Every time I try to set it up, I get "couldn't finish - Username or password is incorrect" message. I have tried the "edit details" or manual setup options. Checked username and password, select imap as the server, SSL/TLS security type, and port 993. I get the same message when I hit next. I am using the stock ROM that was rooted. The root is lost too, but I will work on that later.
I have cleared the data and cache for the client multiple times but that didn't help either.
I have the gmail app on the phone as well and that works fine but it doesn't give any notifications. I would be OK if the gmail app gave me notifications whenever I got new emails so I wouldn't have to use the stock email client, but I prefer the stock email since that was setup as the default email app.
I have also tried K9 but that doesn't show anything when I launch the app.
Ideally I like to use the stock app but I will be OK with the gmail app becoming the default app. Any thing that I can implement to fix this?
