Iris Scanner Useless Outside? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hi there
Is anybody able to successfully use the iris scanner outside and in day/ sunlight? IT NEVER WORKS for me outside, especially when it's normal daylight or sunny.
I can only get it to work inside. It's really useless outside and annoying that it doesn't work.

This was my experience too. When I decided to try the Samsung pay, it added the iris lock, not just to that app but to the whole phone. I didn't notice until I got in the car and went to use Waze and couldn't get in. It never did unlock that way. Removed that lock for system as soon as I got to my destination. Just figured it wasn't meant to work outside.

Strange my scanner works in the dark and also outside. If it really don't unlock the device at all i would give Sammy a call. It should work even outside and in direct sunlight. Only with sunglasses it's hopeless

No need to shout. My iris scanner works outdoors unless I'm standing in direct sunlight and wearing glasses, in which case I need to push up my glasses for the scanner to work.
You could try re-registering your irises to see if that helps. If not, try temporarily registering a friend's irises and try it in sunlight, to see if your irises are unusually hard to detect.

That's an interesting thought too. I wonder if lighter eyes are harder to read in bright light etc. Worth a test when I get my phone back. I only had the one experience and turned it off while in my van but sunlight shining through.

My works outdoors, but because of wearing glasses it's more hit and miss. I'm actually finding myself use the fingerprint reader more often.

Mine wouldn't work in direct sunlight, so I just re registered them while in direct sunlight. Now it recognized me outside too.

Mine works outside as well... even with sunglasses sometimes. Lol

MIne works like a charm everywhere. Try to use a hand near your eyes to block unwanted light.

face unlock & iris scanner

All the reviews I read prior to receiving my phone said Samsung utilized the face unlock and Iris unlock in conjunction together.... My device tells me I can't have enough both on at the same time. Was something changed or am I missing something?
Yeah you can only use one or the other in conjunction with the fingerprint sensor...
that would be ideal to have both face recognition and iris scanner working at the same time in case one or the other cant recognize you.

It they would work at the same time, iris scanner would never engage as face unlock is faster.
so awesome
Its one or another for sure.. From a Device user since a while..
Hmm maybe I was mistaken I swear on release day they were saying they included it to assist with unlocking when the Iris scanner isn't picking up the eyes fast enough... And the Iris scanner would be the option for when you're in pitch black situations
Iris scanner is useless if you wear glasses. Have to take off your glasses to use it.

I wear contacts and it works almost flawlessly. Sometimes I have to purposely not look at my phone because it unlocks so damn fast
Iris scanner is lighted with an infrared diode so no problem in total darkness.
If biometrics fail you can always unlock with your PIN.
I also recommend using the option of requiring a PIN when starting the device.
This is for your own protection in case your device gets seized at a checkpoint as you cannot be legally forced to enter a pin/password whereas biometrics (face/iris/fingerprint) you CAN be!

That wouldn't make much sense for security. Right now it's (biometric) from least secure to most secure face>fingerprint>iris
if the most secure can't unlock your method, why would it try a less secure method from the same general area?
they say to use iris for the most secure method. but then allow it to unlock with the least secure?
that would be like you try to login here and it says password is wrong (esdd9udskl%(_*$#1239) so then it just asks you for your first name instead to log you in.
Only way it could be useful is if the light sensor thinks it's too bright outside (where iris scanner doesn't work) then it can do face unlock only in those situations with a warning that it will use a less secure method.

Face recognition will recognize you faster than iris every time.
The point of having the exclusivity is to have the user choose: ease of use or security
For the fraction of a second difference, I'll be choosing security with iris.
iris has been working so well for me that I see no reason for face unlock. Only time I had an issue was outside when bright and also wearing sunglasses.
Problem is, if it's bright outside, I'm wearing shades.... and when I'm wearing shades, face unlock doesn't work either lol.
another thing with iris is if the phone is too far away, you gotta bring phone or face closer to the other. (this week's example is I'm in class and trying to unlock phone under the table and it's too far for my eyes to be recognized).
if you know there is gonna be an issue, just touch the fingerprint sensor. it will open screen and unlock.

I would think glasses would give issues because the ir light would reflect off the glasses and not brigthen up the iris

Yeah you're right but I didn't think into detail I just swore that's what I read. I swear all the head lines were like "Samsung to include face scan because Iris scanner not yet up to par" that made it sound like to me they would be used in conjunction

True. Lol. But the warning on the phone always warns about contacts and glasses... I think it's for the thick colored ones that's the issue though.
Both face and Iris unlock suck. Finger is in a bad spot. FML

Iris is working phenomenally for me. I haven't used face yet though. I haven't had to use finger but I have a otter box on so I can feel right where the scanner is and my pixel kind of got me used to back scanners.

Fingerprint fix - without a case

Here is a sensor location fix I found on youtube.
Works extremely well and it's barely noticeable. It comes off easily with a coin or a credit card without leaving any marks

This is the correct URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxFN8JRjJhA
Well that's one way to ruin a perfectly good phone...
Thank you, I edited the link.
It does not ruin the phone, when you remove the glue there is no mark left. Unless the tool you use to remove it is too strong. But soft metal does not scratch the glass.
YOu can see that here:

Sorry but thats an horrible idea.... why would i put superglue on 900 euro device.... use face recognition or iris scanner if the fingerprint is concern of yours... but applying sueprglue is a no go.... defo not smart idea.... look at your figner tips..destroyed in proccess..
Thats my 2 cents
Honestly, after a couple of days using the phone, I'm getting used to the finger print sensor and unlock without issue. I also have Iris scanner on.
Lol I'm sorry but you don't DYI on a 850€ phone let alone ruin it for something so futile. You get used to it after a day and u always have the iris scammer which works surprisingly well in the dark

fingerprint scanner

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to buy Galaxy S8+, I'm just worried about the location of the fingerprint scanner.
Can anyone who has the device tell me their opinion? Is it easy to get used to it? Does it feel as natural as the front one after a while?
Thanks in advance,
David
I don't find it inconvenient but I do like center of phone better. My only complaint is it's a little slow half the time. But I wouldn't let the fingerprint steer me away from a otherwise great phone

Got the phone but don't use the fp scanner. I use eyeball scanner, have case on phone so no big deal on do scanner I am guided by the case. No biggie go buy your phone. S8+

I guess I'm not as paranoid as the rest are, I don't use either - just swipe to unlock the phone. Don't use any security but the finger print scanner is easy for me to use, if I wanted to use it.
I use the finger print scanner for shopping. Most of the time I'm on unlock due to location, like bluetooth on the car home wifi etc, the rest of the time I switch between eyes and finger print to unlock more to do with which up way I left the phone than preference. ?

Hello,
I had a Huawei P9, the fingerprint scanner was ideally placed for me, I have the S8 + for 15 days, at first I had difficulty placing min finger directly on the fingerprint scanner but after 2 days Use everything goes well.I also use the iris scanner that is perfect.
the fp scanner is the worse ive ever used, i dont mind the placemeny but it only works less than half the time i want to use it (probably because it is too small). the iris scanner is the best option, works all the time, even through sunglasses. Im pretty sure i could get used to it, but i prefer the iris scanner anyway
Fingerprint scanner works better than on my old S7. Only drawback is you have to pick phone up to use it. With it on front of the Z7 you could use it when phone was laying down. But with the fingerprint scanner and iris scanner both turned on, i'm happy with the S8+.

Fingerprint sensor in sunlight

Hello, everyone.
I just would like to ask if you're experiencing the same:
When indoor, the fingerprint sensor works like a charm. But when being outdoor and there's sun (it doesn't have to be directly shining at the screen), the fingerprint sensor has a high rate of failure. It doesn't matter if the screen brightness is at maximum or minimum, it just doesn't like bright environment it seems.
Are there any issues for you as well?
Cant comment... We dont get much sunshine in Scotland ?

Hahaha ???
For the topic: I'm using a TGSP (not fully adhesive), so maybe this can be connected to my issue? Probably the sun is highlighting the minimal visible patterned structure of the glass and so the FP sensor is confused?

How is the performance with the stock one on a bright day?
I'll set them up again in a complete dark environment as suggested for the 6T. Will see how it works then I'm sunlight. It's blazing fast everytime, except outdoor on a bright day... ?
EDIT: Registrating fingerprints in a completely dark room with screen brightness at maximum SOLVED my problem with A-Videt TGSP! It's working now in bright environment!
Hehe awesome, enjoy

Terrible fingerpring reader

The fingerprint reader on my Note 10+ is terrible!
It often doesn't recognise 4 or 5 attempts in a row, then locking me out from further biometrical login and I have to use my PIN to get into my phone.
I was kind of expecting for this forum to be full of this problem. Is it only me then?

Update to Official Android 10 , and re-write your review after doing that ! :good:
Also look arround for threads regarding some tricks to get a "beter" fingerprint registration
I am on Android 10 already.
It already starts when registering a fingerprint. It constantly says "Press a little harder" when I'm already pressing my thumb right through the screen.
It got that bad after Samsung published the update after people found out their ****ty fingerprint sensor can be fooled by having a screen protector on.
Since then, my fingerprint sensor has been pretty much all but useless.
Your not alone its crappy they should of kept it on the back
im very dissapointed with that fingerprint sensor on my predecessor p30 pro is it shame.. slow and inaccurate, maybe This is due to plastic foil but thats Thinnest foil What ever exists
It only works well if your fingers are little moisturized. Otherwise, it failed often
Yep, I have dry skin and that makes it extremely difficult for the scanner.

Man honestly I wish they would have put the scanner in the power button like on th Huawei mate30 pro
Yes it's rubbish. Worst fingerpront scanner on any phone I've owned. The poor scanner, dropped calls and scrolling issues stop this phone from being 10/10. All very big problems too. I would have kept my Note 8 and not bought this phone had I known.
I just don't use it, lol. Actually I don't use any lock screen at all, not even swipe. I find them annoying. I hide all my stuff in Termux which the average user or theif wouldn't think to look, or even know what they are looking at, lol. I could always lock it or erase it remotely with a few clicks on Google. As long as it's turned on and connected to the internet.
Try this
Register 2 fingerprints only for the same finger with many angles as you can,its worked well for me
I've stopped using the fingerprint scanner altogether and now use facial recognitiong (quick) which works flawlessly.
