face unlock & iris scanner - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

All the reviews I read prior to receiving my phone said Samsung utilized the face unlock and Iris unlock in conjunction together.... My device tells me I can't have enough both on at the same time. Was something changed or am I missing something?

Yeah you can only use one or the other in conjunction with the fingerprint sensor...

that would be ideal to have both face recognition and iris scanner working at the same time in case one or the other cant recognize you.

It they would work at the same time, iris scanner would never engage as face unlock is faster.

so awesome

Its one or another for sure.. From a Device user since a while..

Hmm maybe I was mistaken I swear on release day they were saying they included it to assist with unlocking when the Iris scanner isn't picking up the eyes fast enough... And the Iris scanner would be the option for when you're in pitch black situations

Iris scanner is useless if you wear glasses. Have to take off your glasses to use it.

I wear contacts and it works almost flawlessly. Sometimes I have to purposely not look at my phone because it unlocks so damn fast

Iris scanner is lighted with an infrared diode so no problem in total darkness.
If biometrics fail you can always unlock with your PIN.
I also recommend using the option of requiring a PIN when starting the device.
This is for your own protection in case your device gets seized at a checkpoint as you cannot be legally forced to enter a pin/password whereas biometrics (face/iris/fingerprint) you CAN be!

That wouldn't make much sense for security. Right now it's (biometric) from least secure to most secure face>fingerprint>iris
if the most secure can't unlock your method, why would it try a less secure method from the same general area?
they say to use iris for the most secure method. but then allow it to unlock with the least secure?
that would be like you try to login here and it says password is wrong (esdd9udskl%(_*$#1239) so then it just asks you for your first name instead to log you in.
Only way it could be useful is if the light sensor thinks it's too bright outside (where iris scanner doesn't work) then it can do face unlock only in those situations with a warning that it will use a less secure method.

Face recognition will recognize you faster than iris every time.
The point of having the exclusivity is to have the user choose: ease of use or security
For the fraction of a second difference, I'll be choosing security with iris.

iris has been working so well for me that I see no reason for face unlock. Only time I had an issue was outside when bright and also wearing sunglasses.
Problem is, if it's bright outside, I'm wearing shades.... and when I'm wearing shades, face unlock doesn't work either lol.
another thing with iris is if the phone is too far away, you gotta bring phone or face closer to the other. (this week's example is I'm in class and trying to unlock phone under the table and it's too far for my eyes to be recognized).
if you know there is gonna be an issue, just touch the fingerprint sensor. it will open screen and unlock.

I would think glasses would give issues because the ir light would reflect off the glasses and not brigthen up the iris

True. Lol. But the warning on the phone always warns about contacts and glasses... I think it's for the thick colored ones that's the issue though.

Iris is working phenomenally for me. I haven't used face yet though. I haven't had to use finger but I have a otter box on so I can feel right where the scanner is and my pixel kind of got me used to back scanners.

Lets talk about security

So pretty much every reviewer has commented on the challenges with the fingerprint sensor as we expected. The other interesting thing is that the reviews call out the difficulty of using the iris scanner since you need to position it just right and on the other hand, facial recognition is lightning fast, but not very secure. What will you use?
My thoughts here are that facial recognition isn't really that bad. Who are you trying to protect against? If the phone is at your house/work or whatever, most of the people in a vicinity of your phone aren't really out to hurt you by using a picture to get into your phone. If you lost your phone, just use Google Device Manager to kill the facial unlock.
Thoughts?
Face-unlock sucks unless the device using it has a decent IR light on it. When I worked IT I would get to the office before the lights came on and the little bit of sunlight wasnt enough for the phone to properly read my face. Facial hair pissed it off, too.
Considering the home button on my Note 5 is a terrible place for fingerprint reader, the S8+ will be an improvement over that. Touching the camera glass is a non-issue... A light fingerprint wont cause any noticable impact on photo quality, and even if it did it takes all of a half second to wipe it clean.
I will probably use iris unless it sucks for me, then I will just use fingerprint till the iris scanner gets sorted. I guess I will put a vote in for Iris then.

Totally valid points - allegedly Samsung has improved face unlock to be really good, so it will be interesting to see in low light. I know you can use fingerprint + iris, but not sure you can use fingerprint + face unlock.
Something I wish came stock was the ability to snap a picture with the front and/or back camera whenever someone failed to unlock the device...
Unfortunately I cant test the iris unlock or facial unlock till freakin Tuesday because Best Buy is terrible and I should have known better...
Same always, 4 digit passcode. What's wrong with people. I'm not volunteering my biometrics to ANYONE. EVER. That's "jail bait"

Not really for this thread but... Biometrics are stored locally. Also your pin is far more insecure given that anyone can see it and every store you are in has cameras which will pick up your pin

Cerberus can eat me. I had a lifetime membership with them but then they decided more money was better than good relationships with customers so they expired all of the promotional lifetime memberships. This was their official statement:
"We had to revoke free lifetime licenses that were given away during a few promotions we made years ago. We apologize for this and know it is a bad PR move, unfortunately it was not feasible anymore for us to provide a free service for life.
Free licenses will expire about 3 years after their beginning, and affected users will be notified via email before the license expires. We hope Cerberus helped those users recover a lost or stolen device, and that they will consider buying a license to continue to use our service. Paid licenses are not affected."

This is a security announcement, for your safety we recommend… always shield your pin. If you see something suspicious.
This is for the "always be in fear" crowd. I am not one of those goats. Security update my @$$. Having used Windows 7 for the past decade I do not allow "Automatic Updates". Same with Samsung, "Security Update: Improves Performance, Prolongs Battery Life". This is a 'Trojan Horse' to get your biometrics on the grid. What next, DNA Tester? Blood Sample?
Even IF someone has my PIN, then what? Do they have my phone? Even if I had your phone locked down with Fingerprint Lock, I can just reset the device?
Nope, not buying it. That stuff's for the goats.
I used Iris unlock on both of the Note 7s I had and never had any issues. It even worked when I had my glasses on.

That's twice, but I'm not sure if "goat" is just an insult, or reference to Doddington's zoo.
Either way, using a 4-digit PIN trades ease of use for very low security. It can even be guessed remotely, using sensor data showing how you tilt the phone.
As far as "just resetting the device", that won't bypass Full Disk Encryption., because it should erase the keys stored for FDE and render internal storage unreadable. I'll confirm this on my S8+ when I get it today.
Who exactly is going to take my phone or "guess remotely" my pin. And go ahead, quote fear mongering propaganda. Some people will believe anything they read. The world is full of people looking to hack their phone and computer I get it. Better "be safe and secure" and use Iris Scanner and Fingerprint Sensor. These 2 things are like one year old, what were people doing to "protect" their phones for the 10 or 20 years prior. Just a reminder, your whole bank account, life savings, in the form of Debit Card/Credit Card is used how? With a 4 digit Pin number. I would rather guess that remotely than worry about your "smart phone"

Thanks for the thinly-veiled ad hominems, and catching my "fear-mongering propaganda". Most people are easily fooled by inline URLs., but not you.
Another reply isn't going to do much, because the goalposts are moving around fast. What happened to Win7 never being updated? Now we're on to my bank account (which BTW uses routing, account, and ACH numbers, not just a 4-digit PIN). I don't play that kind of game though. Cheers.

Any one having issues activating Cerberus app in S8+?
Actually I have no problem with fingerprint scanner "location" (near camera some folk says) and its pretty fast and it opens my phone on very first try. the only thing i don't like is when the phone is on the table i need to pick it up and use fingerpring which in this scenario I use pattern unlock.
I use the iris scanner all the time and it works flawlessly unless the phone is in direct sun light and then it doesn't work well and I use the fingerprint scanner but in most cases the iris scanner works just great!

I agree. It is not quite as easy to use as fingerprint scanning- however a pin or more secure password option exists and with smartlock setup- the phone will only lock when not near your Bluetooth connected watch, car audio, etc. Secure folders is an added layer of security (S8). Besides theft, the principal vunerability is downloading apps not in the Google play store. However none of the above is fool proof. Antivirus/malware tools should also help.

Iris scanner on Samsung S8 has been defeated. Fingerprint reader has not.
Banking apps use Fingerprint reader. So does LastPass that can protect other passwords. Use a complex PIN with more than 4 numbers as a last resort if Fingerprint detection doesn't work.

Iris unlocking and sun glasses

Just noticed that my phone unlocks itself by scanning my irises even if I have my sun glasses on???
Maybe the scanner is too powerful I thought...so I covered one of the lenses with my hand...and tried unlocking it again...
And it did...it unlocked by scanning just one side of my face and with sun glasses on...
Maybe it is time to go back to the pin option.

Why? Matching just one iris is secure enough--and certainly more secure than a short PIN.
Yea just like the note 7 it works very well and fast

fingerprint scanner

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to buy Galaxy S8+, I'm just worried about the location of the fingerprint scanner.
Can anyone who has the device tell me their opinion? Is it easy to get used to it? Does it feel as natural as the front one after a while?
Thanks in advance,
David
I don't find it inconvenient but I do like center of phone better. My only complaint is it's a little slow half the time. But I wouldn't let the fingerprint steer me away from a otherwise great phone

Got the phone but don't use the fp scanner. I use eyeball scanner, have case on phone so no big deal on do scanner I am guided by the case. No biggie go buy your phone. S8+

I guess I'm not as paranoid as the rest are, I don't use either - just swipe to unlock the phone. Don't use any security but the finger print scanner is easy for me to use, if I wanted to use it.
I use the finger print scanner for shopping. Most of the time I'm on unlock due to location, like bluetooth on the car home wifi etc, the rest of the time I switch between eyes and finger print to unlock more to do with which up way I left the phone than preference. ?

Hello,
I had a Huawei P9, the fingerprint scanner was ideally placed for me, I have the S8 + for 15 days, at first I had difficulty placing min finger directly on the fingerprint scanner but after 2 days Use everything goes well.I also use the iris scanner that is perfect.
the fp scanner is the worse ive ever used, i dont mind the placemeny but it only works less than half the time i want to use it (probably because it is too small). the iris scanner is the best option, works all the time, even through sunglasses. Im pretty sure i could get used to it, but i prefer the iris scanner anyway
Fingerprint scanner works better than on my old S7. Only drawback is you have to pick phone up to use it. With it on front of the Z7 you could use it when phone was laying down. But with the fingerprint scanner and iris scanner both turned on, i'm happy with the S8+.

Terrible fingerpring reader

The fingerprint reader on my Note 10+ is terrible!
It often doesn't recognise 4 or 5 attempts in a row, then locking me out from further biometrical login and I have to use my PIN to get into my phone.
I was kind of expecting for this forum to be full of this problem. Is it only me then?

Update to Official Android 10 , and re-write your review after doing that ! :good:
Also look arround for threads regarding some tricks to get a "beter" fingerprint registration
I am on Android 10 already.
It already starts when registering a fingerprint. It constantly says "Press a little harder" when I'm already pressing my thumb right through the screen.
It got that bad after Samsung published the update after people found out their ****ty fingerprint sensor can be fooled by having a screen protector on.
Since then, my fingerprint sensor has been pretty much all but useless.
Your not alone its crappy they should of kept it on the back
im very dissapointed with that fingerprint sensor on my predecessor p30 pro is it shame.. slow and inaccurate, maybe This is due to plastic foil but thats Thinnest foil What ever exists
It only works well if your fingers are little moisturized. Otherwise, it failed often
Yep, I have dry skin and that makes it extremely difficult for the scanner.

Man honestly I wish they would have put the scanner in the power button like on th Huawei mate30 pro
Yes it's rubbish. Worst fingerpront scanner on any phone I've owned. The poor scanner, dropped calls and scrolling issues stop this phone from being 10/10. All very big problems too. I would have kept my Note 8 and not bought this phone had I known.
I just don't use it, lol. Actually I don't use any lock screen at all, not even swipe. I find them annoying. I hide all my stuff in Termux which the average user or theif wouldn't think to look, or even know what they are looking at, lol. I could always lock it or erase it remotely with a few clicks on Google. As long as it's turned on and connected to the internet.
Try this
Register 2 fingerprints only for the same finger with many angles as you can,its worked well for me
I've stopped using the fingerprint scanner altogether and now use facial recognitiong (quick) which works flawlessly.

Question What is your experience with fingerprint and face unlock?

Hi,
I'm coming from Note9. Fingerprint scanner was on the back. It also had iris scanner.
So dry or wet finger, day or night - I was able to unlock my Note9 from the first try with 100% probability.
Can't say about S2 Ultra.
Faceunlock - works only in ideal conditions (face in front of the camera, well lit etc.).
Fingerprint - most of the time I unlock it from 1-3 tries. And yes.. I rescanned my fingers many times. Same result.
What is your experience?
Coming from a Note 10+ the fingerprint reader works great; it is much more responsive than the Note 10+. I don't use face unlock (I haven't used it since the Galaxy Nexus), so I can't talk to that. I'm not comfortable using face unlock. It is still less secure than fingerprint or a PIN. I don't care what Apple or Samsung says.
I did like the iris scanner on my Note 8. Though, I am not sure how secure it was.
I have no issues with fingerprint....works mostly first time....sometimes when finger is wet I need a 2nd try....Face unlock works okay most of the time....lighting conditions do play a roll....especially bad if the room is dark and a light shine from behind....overall much better then my previous samsung phones

Good for you. What previous Samsung phone did you have?
It's really worse than Note9. But Note9 had different tech (iris scanner and not ordinary front facing camera, hardware finger print scanner and not under the screen scanner).
I had the s5,s6+,s9,s10 and s21 ultra...on my previous phones I made sure to scan one finger into multiple fingers, so it had 5 copies of my finger... that helped mostly with it reading my finger print the first time.. saw a video on it on YouTube. With the s22 ultra I only have one fingerprint registered and works great...i did make sure i scan it from all angles and sides... also video on YouTube...
Faceunlock much worth than OnePlus.

S22 Ultra lets scan only 4 fingers. So 2 times right and left thumb.
I suggest doing 1 finger on all 4...it worked for me on the previous phones
I used both thumbs for setting up one fingerprint. Did this for all four fingerprint options, so each process has both thumbs registered and it went on for four times. Did this fun and not necessarily to make sure to recognise better.
Both thumbs work as intended. Doesn't work when wet or with pruney fingers.
I don't use face recognition because of no security and "ideal condition" requirement. It's neither IRIS scanning nor super secure face id.

S22u fingerprints recognized 80% of the time. I have set up one thumb and one index finger. I wish the fingerprint reader was on the power button like the z Fold 3 which worked about 98% of the time.
I do not use face unlock.
The FPR for me works about 99% of the time. If a finger was wet that's typically the only time it doesn't work. I use face unlock secondary. Also works great.
I came from a pixel 6 pro, where the FPR was total garbage. It's nice having a phone you can actually unlock with a fingerprint lol.

Wow, 99% success with FPR - that seems a little high. Try turning off face unlock and see what percent success you get with just FPR. Not sure if it goes immediately to face unlock on the 1st failed attempt with the FPR. If it does, face unlock is very fast and may be masking the failed FPR attempts.

I did both thumbs and both forefingers using one fingerprint entry. I saw it on youtube and couldn't believe it. I'm not talking about adding one fingerprint completely and then hitting add. Example, start with your thumb and just register part of it, then use a forefinger, another thumb, another forefinger, keep alternating until it hits 100%. Works perfectly.

Same experience. Works very fast but probability of unlock is 90% or so. And this is supposedly a good result for the scanner which is behind the screen. My previous phone was OnePlus 3T with a fingerprint scanner inside a button - unlock speed was the same (instant) but unlock probability was something like 99.99%. This is called progress...
I use both thumbs for unlocking which works around 90% of the time.
With face unlocking I have normal and alternative appearance set so this typically works before I can even use my fingerprints.
Inconsistent at best. Still better than the fingerprint on my Pixel 6 Pro. But face recognition belongs to the iPhone.

I have a new S22 and my experience is so frustrating. I am coming back to samsung after few generations from huawei (mate 20 pro and P30 Pro). What I can't digest is the fingerprint and face id works so flawlessly on the Huawei which is relatively newcomer than Samsung and they have done it so perfectly. (on Mate 20 Pro it used 3D scan and on P30 Pro 2D scan). Samsung with all its generations with the many decades of experience still struggles.
Fingerprint is too slow and sometimes after a few tries. Face ID takes a while to open the screen. And what more - when i enable fingerprint - for some reason the face ID just becomes lazy, I don't see it even attempting to detect the face (from the rim light effect on front camera). It looks as though the fingerprint has superceded the face id. I am getting more and more frustrated by this. I did try scanning both fingerprint and face id several times. But no luck. I even suspected probably there is a way to prioritize the usage of biometrics and looked for it but there is none.
In contrast on my Huawei - it just takes fraction of a second to unlock as though it is not scanning the id (both face and fingerprint) but actually it does the job so quickly. What is happening here - is this how samsung had been all these years? I can't believe if they say they've improved from previous generations. Why is the face id so slow and most times (well lit environment as well - the face id is not at work at all (no rim light around front camera, as though the id is not at work)
Is this the same experience others have and is normal for Samsung? Do you all think it is a one off case and a reset might fix it?
I find it almost as smooth as IPhone 13. Both fingerprint and face recognition work well together, probably @ 98% unlock efficiency. with official samsung screen protector
