Questions about refurbished unit. - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hey all,
I'm getting sent a replacement from Google due to my current device having a faulty power button. (It works whenever it feels like it)
Are the refurbished phones clean looking like new phones? I love the look of the phone itself and have had bad experiences with refurbs (HTC).
And since it's from the Google Store, it's still rootable?

I would assume yes it's still Rootable. The refurbished units are good but I notice there was two scratches on the edge of the housing with mine. I assume it was there due to a previous screen replacement.

Should still be rootable..

If the phone you sent them was a Google bought phone yes it is rootable. If you sent them a Verizon phone probably not.

I haven't gotten a refurbished Pixel. Luckily I haven't needed it, but I did get a refurbished Nexus 5X because it boot looped, and it looked brand new.

I just received a refurbished phone and I wouldn't have even been able to tell it wasn't brand new.

Thanks everyone for replying. I received my refurbished unit and like everyone said, it looked brand new! Only issue was that Sprint was unable to get it working on their Network. For some reason, the IMEI and the MEID were entirely different. I went through 4 techs before the last one informed me that those two numbers should only be off by one, and mine were entirely different. So, Google is sending me out another refurbished one.
Wish me luck. ?

Good luck. I am going on my 4th replacement. First 2 couldn't lock onto gps satellites and my current phone died while on a road trip. I haven't rooted or modded my device and use the chargers+cables I bought from Google. There are only 2 months left for the warranty and afraid I will have an 800 dollar brick after the warranty expires.

Nexus 5 warranty replacement really new?

Hey everyone,
I purchased the Nexus 5 back when it was first released. The other day I was using the phone and it all of a sudden rebooted, and became stuck in a boot loop. I called Google and they tried to help, but ended up they couldn't. They are replacing the phone, and the customer service agent told me it would be a brand new phone. He sent me a link to order the phone again, and I went through the process of ordering the phone, it gave an estimated delivery of 3 to 4 weeks. That was yesterday, and today I got an email stating it was shipped.
Since the delivery time went from 3 to 4 weeks to being delivered in 3 business days, this had me wondering if the replacements really brand new or refurbished? Anyone have any experience with returns that might know?
Its brand new.

Are they requiring you to give them the original box and accessories from the defect unit in return for the replacement? Did they say that the replacement will come with new accessories? If not, then I'd assume its refurbished.

The customer service rep told me to remove the phone from the new box and put the old one back in and ship it back. If its one thing I've learned over the years it is that just because the customer service says they ship new ones doesn't mean that it will necessarily happen that way. I was hoping someone who has had to do a replacement might chime in on their experience. Either way I will find out Monday.

I just sent mine in for warranty and they told me the same thing. The phone I received was new in the box. I put my old one back in its original box with original accessories and sent that one back. I ordered my replacement through the link in an email and got it within a week. I placed my order on the 3rd or so of this month. Sounds like yours will be new.
I had my Nexus 4 replaced last year, and then my Nexus 5 a month ago. Google doesn't deal with refurbs, they just send you brand new devices.
Received my replacement yesterday and it was indeed a brand new device. I also received the newer updated model with the larger speaker holes, and the quieter power and volume buttons. My original from release date had a lot of rattle to the volume and power buttons. So, in the end it all worked out for the better.
Based on my experience, it should be a brand new device. However once the production stops for the phone ( Like the Nexus 4) they start giving out refurbs.

Makes me wonder what they do with all the defective ones? I guess they fix them up and have them on standby for when production stops?

A refurb one
I bought my nexus 5 the first day it was available on google play store.
On July my phone suddenly turned off itself and never woke up, when i connected it to the charger, it was in a boot loop, i called google, they tried to troubleshoot me, but we ended up replacing it. They send me a brand new one and i was happy.
Unfortunately, last week i noticed some issues while making calls, i could listen the one i was talking with, but the other end couldn't hear me. I did some tests recording sounds with different apps, but when i reproduce them, i could only hear noise.
My speaker was apparently having problems, don't know if physical or software related, but i needed to call google assistance again. They drive me to make some tests, reboot it in safe mode, restore to factory defaults, but nothing helped. I read some articles and forums and this is a well known problem, but the rep @ google says they aren't aware of it.
In the end, they opted to replace my phone, but this time with a refurbished one, i'm afraid the phone they will send me, could have usage signs like having some scratches like a case a read in a forum. Mine was aesthetically perfect. Maybe they ran out of new phones so they started to warranty replace with refurbished ones...

Yes they only replace N5s with refurbished devices now. They are supposed to be in "as new" condition so if you notice any cosmetic damage you can send it back.

I just went through this myself. In terms of cosmetic issues, you likely have nothing to worry about. My refurb looked like brand new. Unfortunately, the original issue that it was returned to LG for (speaker issues) wasn't fixed by LG. So I'm now waiting on my 2nd refurb in a week.

I just sent in my old Nexus 5 that randomly shut off and got stuck on the boot screen and when trying to go through fast boot to recovery, the recovery was gone... nothing but a black screen.
I received a refurbished 32 gig to replace my old phone. Looks brand new, not a scratch on it. The process couldn't have been any easier.
I received two replacements the month of September, not were 403k, both sealed, with the usual screen protector on them. No signs of usage whatsoever, 100%mint. I bought the phone through Google BTW. I honestly think these are new...

[Q] Nexus 5 Warranty Replacement

Recently, my Nexus 5 has been acting up. The problem specifically is that when I plug it into the OEM charger (along with 3 other chargers that I've tried), it will only hold the charge. It will not charge past the battery% that it is sitting at. Sometimes, it even drains somehow. I've tried going back to stock, clearing my cache, and other troubleshooting steps that Google sent me.
After letting them know that I had no luck with getting the phone to charge properly, they tell me that they will provide a replacement (hold on credit card, blah blah blah) but that the replacement unit will be REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW condition.. Is this how the Google warranty has always been? It does not sound right to me. I've only had the device for 8 months, and they offer me a refurbished replacement for a hardware-faulty phone?
Just looking for a quick answer and some peace of mind if someone could quickly clarify if their refurbished replacements are something regular and I shouldn't be worried about swapping out my phone for something in like-new condition.
They used to give new devices for rma. Now that the phone has been out for some time they only give refurbished ones for rma. So yes, it's normal.

I called Google yesterday about my Nexus 5, but for a different issue with the SIM card. Same as you, "hold on credit card, blah blah blah" and then I received the email to see it was going to be a 'REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW' unit. Knowing that the potential for abuse or misuse on a returned and refurbished unit is seemingly limitless I called them. The woman who I spoke with said that they just changed their policy 2 weeks ago and now they will all be refurbished units. They said that if I receive the refurbished unit and I don't like it, I can just send it back. They also said that if I receive a refurbished unit and it has problems after sever replacements I could go the route of returning it all together.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
I may stand alone when I say this, but how is getting a refurbished replacement for an 8 month old phone anything but fair? I can understand if it was a month old, but after 8 months your phone is thoroughly used. The refurbs are like new so you'll be getting a device that's in better condition than yours... I dunno, pick your battles I guess.
Refurbs are fine. They go back to LG and are put through the same QQ checks that new devices are. If housing or glass have any cracks or scratches they are replaced. The device will look brand new and they only way most people would be able to tell is because Google is telling you.

Exactly, every other device you would get refurbs from the start. The fact that Google was replacing them with new devices for 8 months is the surprising part, not that they've now switched to the standard business practice as the device nears EOL. It's like complaining about Google cross shipping the replacements. they go above and beyond what is expected of them and people still find reasons to complain.
If you return a used product, you can expect a used (refurbished) product in return.
I RMA'd my device due to a faulty earpiece. It is a 7 month old phone, and the earpiece just simply started acting up.
The refurbished device that I received is nearly flawless, but at the charging port there are quite some scratches. It seems the previous owner would fumble the cable around without looking, trying to plug it in.

They are bad enough that I am attempting to return it and get another one. I understand that they are refurbished, but I dont one want that is in a worse condition that mine. I am super caring to my phone. I expect something similar than that.
I will update as to how it goes!
Thanks for the responses (excluding the slight opinionated hostility). I feel a bit more comfortable about a refurbished device since I haven't had issues with phones before. I was skeptical because I had my Galaxy Nexus for 3 years with zero issues, it was the best phone I've ever had, so I was really surprised that a battery could crap out after 8 months just like that. I'll probably be ordering mine soon since I don't think a full refund is possible, and quite frankly, the device is quite better than the SGS products.

That actually looks like they were using some sort of dock with their phone, hence the squarish imprint. Not the worst but I agree with you it shouldn't be in a worse condition then what you sent in, and that would not qualify as "as new" in most people's opinion.

LG G3 REFURBS?? Shipping Issues

Are we really receiving refurbished LG G3???
Ordered my replacement phone on Aug 28th and didn't get it yesterday as promised. So I called ATT and they told me they were having shipping issues with DHL and that the phone is still at DHL's warehouse. I told them that was unacceptable so they sent me out another phone yesterday and it got here today . Same model, same software build number. Know I don't know if I want to restart everything over again to go through wireless charging stopping a day later. ATT says it a refurb but the phone hasen't been out long to be having this many refurbs.Right??? It has to be a new phone without the back cover, battery, and what ever else that's in the original LG box. I asked the ATT lady If I could sent back the phone, box and everything that comes in it back to start fresh to make sure it wasn't my battery as well as my phone. The lady stated that all warranty issues come with the phone only per LG. So do you really think we are getting refurb phones?
Its not impossible. Refurb dosnt mean it was broken. It could be just one of the many g3 returned after a few days because they didnt like it.

You'll almost always get a refurbished unit after a warranty claim. They are probably sitting on a mountain of refurbs sent back for people not liking the screen tone, or the buttons feel, or the weight of the phone... Etc... Etc... Once it leaves the store and gets returned it goes back to be 'reworked' hence the term refurbished. They RMA them, they get unpacked - inspected - tested - then repacked as you just received yours. If nothing is wrong, and it passes all cosmetic inspection criteria, then you are basically just getting a phone someone used for a day, week, maybe month and returned.

Yes, 95% of replacements are refurbished. They tell you that when you call for warranty service.

Att is swapping out my s5 for a g3 as soon as they get the full kit with a charger, battery, and plastic back in stock. Who knows when that will be.

Took me over a week to get my replacement because of DHL. I got a replacement for the wireless charging also. For some reason my phone sat in the DHL warehouse for 5 days. It seems like I have always had problems with DHL. Got my phone today and so far the wireless charging is fine for how ever it's gonna last.
It would seem they are not sitting on a mountain of them, they still can't get me one with a battery and back plate from the warranty department. I want to get this phone but I can't sit on it forever while my current phone isn't working. Sometimes I hate at&t.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using XDA Premium HD app
I would have to say that most, if not all, of the back plates get scrapped during the RMA process. Very rarely do they receive the device with a back plate that's immaculate enough to ship with a refurbished phone. Consumer devices such as phones can not have any scratches, dents, or other blemishes on any Class A surface. The entire device outer shell is a Class A surface, so during the RMA process they replace a lot of cosmetic plastics. Because of that, they are likely sitting on a mountain of refurbished phones, but not back plates due to those getting scrapped at RMA intake.
**Note - I can speak with some level of authority on this matter, as I am a process engineer for an electronics contractor that builds boards and finished devices. My specific group produces medical devices, but we have other facilities that produce consumer electronics for nearly all of the major device manufacturers. ?

So I have a predicament. My G3 does crazy stuff when on mobile data. Last night at dinner my G3 went from LTE to 4G to E to G then after about 5 mins went back to 4G and occasionally back to E. Mean while my wife's GS5 had LTE the whole time
I've already tried a new Sim card and that didn't fix anything. Other than the mobile data my phone is fine, I hate to have it replaced and end up with a refurb that does the same thing.
What should I do? Are all the G3s this bad with mobile data? Or is mine screwed up?

Have you tried reloading the factory image. There is a thread in the general section on reloading back to stock. Its pretty easy and if you donr want to chance a refurb then give it a shot.

Connectivity issues with pixel 5

Hi I have the pixel 5. I seem to be having serious connectivity issues with this phone. I have a replacement unit on the way. But I wanted to know if this is a common problem with this phone.
When I moved into my current residence I was using the nexus 6p and I have had every pixel xl in the line up to my current pixel 5. All phones were on Google Fi. I never had issues with connection till I got the 5. My wife's phone is the pixel 3a xl and she will have almost full service while mine has none at all.
It is weird. I will be on 5g then it will drop service and sometimes It will show that the phone has reception and say 5g but the little x is in the reception box. Signal spy will say I'm connected to TMobile but I get nothing. And yes we have decent 5g and strong lte here. As I said above my wife's pixel 3a xl gets almost full lte service. I don't know if it's because 5g is still new or if it's because of the downgraded processor maybe. Anyway is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have any possible solutions to this? I am thinking that maybe the phone is getting stuck on 5g when it should go to lte. So I am going to try shutting 5g off using the dialer menu.

Hey Jimsmith did you have issues with connectivity before they replaced your motherboard? Also I gotta be honest I know ubreakifix is a authorized repair shop but I was not impressed with their work. I had a new battery put in my nexus 6p and it did nothing to fix the problem I also had a new motherboard put in my galaxy s2 and I had problems with it. But go figure I went to a little shop near my house and had a new screen put on my note 2 and one of my galaxy s5's and it worked great with no problems. After my issue with the nexus 6p I have always gotten the extended device protection from fi. Now google fixes my issues. I recommend doing that.

No problems at all prior to the motherboard replacement. I finally got around to calling the store that replaced it and they said to contact Google. They couldn't find the new motherboard's IMEI in their system so now I have to go back to the store to have them inspect it, create another work order, and put the IMEI into Google's shared database.
The motherboards are severely backordered. It took them 12 days to get the first one and they said it's months long now! I'm going to insist on a replacement, I just hope it won't be refurbished.

How long you have the phone? There is a 1 year RMA I believe. But be careful I only have this phone for 2 months and they tried telling me I had to pay a deductible for my device protection. I had to say wait a minute device protection is for when you make a.mistake and cause issues with the phone like when I dropped my pixel 3a in a bowl of soup woopsie that's my fault not there's. But my pixel 5 came out of the box went into a speigen cases.with a speigen screen protector and stayed that way. I didn't drop, bang, smack, drop in water or anything else. Therefore I want a manufacturer warranty not device protection.
I only know because my wife is in customer service and she always says the more you are a **** the more you get what you want. So I tried that and I was respectful but 5old them how I feel and got what I believed I deserve. I think they call that being assertive or something right?
Did you get the phone from Google store or from Fi or one of the carriers or a third party seller? Because that matters too. Good luck I hope you get it sorted out brother.

I bought it last November from Best Buy. Google had no problem fixing it under warranty for being bricked, and the warranty still lasts for a year from purchase. I have sent the requested information to Google and am waiting for the replacement authorization to complete and my hopefully new phone to ship.

Question UK Currys/Carphone warehouse Purchase

Hello
Anyone here who purchased pixel phone from Currys or carphone warehouse website ever asked for proof of purchase with IMEI and actually got it?
Google asking for it to replace under warranty.
Stdange. I had good expierence with google RMA. I bought Pixel 6 Pro from hands. It was working ok, but unfortunately it heated very often in the summer and I asked google for RMA. And they didn't asked for proof of purchase. I said phone bought feom hands. And google replaced because phone still was under warranty. But with Pixel 2 XL google asked for proof of purchace because they wanted I'm going to the store and ask them to replace. And as store didn't want to replace google accepted for RMA.
Whenever i have bought from them the IMEI has always been on the reciept that was with the phone when it was delivered. You are probably better off letting Currys deal with the phone to be honest given your contract is with them.

Mine was delivered with no invoice.
Currys will take it back and see if they can repair which means no phone for who knows how long. Google includes warranty so want to use them for quick replacement.
Turn around was 2 weeks when i took a phone back to Currys, they just sent it off to Nokia who replaced the phone.

That's the problem I don't have spare phone. Google offer advanced replacement so they collect old and deliver new same time but keep a hold on bank for full amount in case they do not get correct old phone back.
With no proof of purchase/IMEI what choice do you have? You could end up nearly a grand out of pocket.
