Anyone running 4k all the time? - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

I saw a video on YouTube how to change settings through ADB to run 4k all the time?
Here's video link.

Anyone done this? Any issues or comments?

I assumed that was the case. But what exactly does "wm size" really change? Can you explain how it is able to "simulate" higher resolutions? Is it just changing the DPI? What is really going on when you run that command?

Does that mean you can add that function into your custom kernel or that it's only a thing Sony can do?

That would be a no, I have it running 4k for about a week now. Maybe it's the way I use my phone but my battery life is up there. Performance is simply unaffected for me

Didn't you guys read what @AndroPlus said? He said it's only virtual 4K and not real 4K.
He said only kernel can change real resolution, I asked if a modder can add it or only Sony which he replied that he could but wouldn't.
I then asked if it was because it would destroy the performance/battery.
So not sure why you're replying to what I asked.

I confirmed by reading the source. This is not real 4k. Sorry guys.

So the phone has a 4K Display. But doesn't run in 4K. But it can if you modify some data with ADB. But that's not real 4K...
Guys... wtf???
It's been more than a month I am thinking to buy this phone but I don't because no one really knows what this phone can or can't do. xD

by saying not a real 4k u guys mean its just shows different resolution on paper but actually renders in regular 1080p?
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

God seriously, how much of an explanation do you guys need? Google answers anything you ask.
It's not NATIVE 4k. i.e. your apps and other things are not running in 4k. All you're really getting is more space on your screen, similar to changing the dpi. Except in this case instead of things becoming tiny, due to changing the DPI they stay relatively the same size. You are not getting more quality, you are not getting more pixels etc. Apps like games etc. will not run at 4K and suddenly look tons better. If the source is NOT 4k, then you are not looking at something in 4K it's as simple as that.
Almost all content isn't 4K yet. Only Netflix and the Gallery app and a few more apps that can correctly tell the Kernel to run in 4K, can actually run in 4K.

Ok, so let say that you didn't modify the ADB. You are running a normal 2k Movie Player App. If i wanna watch a 3D 360 4k Video, will the video be rendered at 4K? Or at the lower resolution of the Application?

Camera 360 has been my favorite. The pro version has a few more features than the free, but I'm happy with the free. Used black and white setting.
No, I don't mean for actually taking photos. I have a DSLR for that.

Ah, I see now. You mean apps that assist in photography. I guess I read it wrong. If you meant a camera app, you probably would have titled it, "camera app." Haven't come across anything as of yet, but will shoot it this direction when I do. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Photoshop does that pretty well. I don't know why you'd need it on your phone since 1) you can't really do exposure bracketing with the built-in camera and 2) it is very CPU-intensive. It takes my quad-core about a minute to HDR a 12.1MP image with 3 shots.

As a very keen amateur have subscribed to this thread.
Don't really know what kind of apps you're looking for, but I found GoldenPic (I know it's on Android, but I don't know about iPhone) that shows you the golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, sunset, etc. It seems to work good and I took some great golden hour photos this past weekend (if I don't mind saying so myself)
it looks like they just have Android for now. I found the website here:
goldenpic.jebsapps.com
You also have 'Photography Trainer'.
It's a Paid App $1.99
To Quote from AppBrain:-
This app guides you step-by-step how to set your D-SLR to take the perfect shot. Capture amazing photos by truly understanding shutter speed, aperture & ISO. Dozens of sample photos, photography tips and tutorials. Night photography, sports, landscapes, portraits, HDR & more.
It's well loved with practically ALL comments getting 5 Stars.
Anyone here try that 'Photography Trainer' app? I wish they had a free version available to try out first.

It's very good. I just got it, and it is really good especially if you are totally new to DSLR photography. It gives you an intuitive flow of conditions and then gives details based on each level. I.E. Night time -> moving object -> fireworks.

[Q] Camera exposure compensation does not work with 3rd party apps.

Hello, I am on ICS and have this problem since Gingerbread.
The exposure compensation function of the camera does not work with 3rd party applications.
When I try to change the exposure on a third party app (HDR Camera, camera zoom fx, procapture, vignette, camera fv-5) it always stays the same.
This is a pitty because I can't have HDR, bracketing etc, which would make for nice photos.
I've contacted Almalence (creators of HDR Camera) about this issue in the past but they couldn't help. They told me that not all Android devices give access to these controls and offered me a refund.
Since we have so many i9103 hackers here, I thought to ask if you have any experience with this issue. It should be a firmware and/or library thing.
Yes, I'm too facing the same issue. Can't change exposure value in other camera apps. I thought it was only me. But it seems this is universal.
Thanks, at least I know I am not alone. It is very difficult to find information about this problem for any device.
I can't understand why Samsung did such a bad work with the device. Especially in ICS there are standards they should follow for camera access in order to avoid such issues.

Being able to change is one thing but does it make a difference. BTW which app are you using?
HDR camera+ always captures photos, but in order to work properly the 3 photos it takes should have very different brightness. Does it work that way in Angeeks ICS?

No, the exposure control is the bar on the bottom right, the one which goes [-2...-1...v...1...2].
When you move this bar, the brightness of the photo should change. Dark towards -2, bright towards 2.
It is also called exposure compensation.

Apparently these screenshots were taken by "some dude" on an AT&T Moto X, to a friend, who then sent them to Brian Klug, a senior editor for Anandtech.
Here are the screenshots:
The phone probably has a Snapdragon 600! Or something similar, because I don't honestly think an S4 Pro could perform that well. Maybe Moto's baked something special just for us!
This will be updated as soon as I obtain new information to add

How does CPU-Z actually ID the hardware? Is the CPU specs ID'd by CPU model number or are they placeholders in this case because it is an unreleased phone?

From what I understand, it actually knows the exact hardware. I mean, worst comes worst, you just download cpu-z and try it on your own device to see if it matches up. I wouldn't think they're placeholders

I don't think its good idea to record for more than 5 minutes.
First - it takes alot of space.
Second - processor will burn. Even DSLR cameras have limits because of their processor and storage.

First: I will choose how I want to use my space not samsung
Second: The processor will never burn as it is able to handle 5 minutes will be 8 hours, I will choose how to use my battery not samsung
Third: DSLR cameras have limits because if some camera is able to record more than 15 minutes in a lot of of countries will need to pay a higher royaltie in the price for the audivisual agencies like RIIA as they pay with a 15 minute limit as a photo camera
So please, don't post stupidities.

For future reference to anyone and everyone I have recorded over 1 hour of video (cut into 5 min peices) and my phone got a little warm but not as warm as playing sentinel 3 so let's continue looking into this.
How can you burn your phone? Last time I checked, all modern processors have thermal throttling to systematically prevent exactly that.
This isn't the 2000s anymore.

Woah! Way better. Nice find! :highfive:
EDIT: For me, the sweet spot is right on top of the camera icon.
Interesting... Wonder why I've never heard of this. Is it an artificial contrast, so like just adding more sharpening affect? Or is it actually making Black's blacker and White's whiter?
^ I'm curious as well.

So, If you ran this through a actual contrast test (the one review sites use), would it show an improvement? I hope so, because this phone according to review sites has quite a low contrast ratio

The phone was designed to have natural colors, alot people dont understand it because they are use to the high contrast in displays the super amoled. Also when they review the phone they never show off the color adjuster feature..
All i can say is try it ur self.

Good call. Liking this setting a lot.
Very Cool Find!
Very nice. What's the optimal contrast level for this phone? Coming from a GS4, I'm wondering how much i need to adjust it.

For my display @ 50% brightness auto turned off, putting the icon directly above the camera produces perfect contrast and blackness levels according to this "template page" based test site:

thanks, you see a pic speak the meaning much clearer than just words, at first I put the circle directly above the camera icon
