[Q] root question

Just got a Sensation this last Sat, my first Android phone, and am interested in rooting it. Never done this on any phone and am a little confused as many guides are for people who want to flash roms. For now, I would just like to root in order to get rid of some preinstalled apps. Is there a guide that has the minimal steps needed to just root? Also, does rooting do anything to my settings or apps that are there now?

Follow steps one to three on the first post of this.. and that is it

Ok, didn't quite understand the guide here but found a video that made it easy and now I'm rooted. Will this keep me from receiving updates? When I get updates will this unroot the phone? Also, which apps are safe to remove without messing anything up?

Hello and welcome to the forums.
To property receive OTA updates you need a stock recovery - that's a must! We cannot predict what HTC is going to update next so if you delete a package that is going to be updated - yeah, this may cause troubles. So deleting kinda anything as root may cause a OTA update to fail. I suggest that you buy a application that does a backup when uninstalling a package. I'm using Root Uninstaller Pro to "freeze" some apps just in case HTC releases a OTA that needs one of those disabled apps.

If you are running the stock ROM you can just update OTA right? I'm not running a stock ROM so i dont have any OTA at all, but just curious...

I'm running stock rom, nothing changed except it's rooted. Are you saying I won't get any OTA updates from HTC? Would I get them if I took the phone in to a T-Mobile store, say when ICS is released or would it still not update because it's rooted?

Not sure of it's exact location because I didn't bookmark it, but it was on youtube.
Anyone know the answer to my last question?

to find your answer boot into recovery on your phone, if you see it orange or blue with lots of options and on top it says CWM custom recovery, then no you will not receive OTA's, but to be honest thats ok, usually we root users get OTA leaks before its even released, expamle ICS some one is already working on ICS port so we will see ICS before even official release is even out
and if your rooted i found best way to remove bloat is to use titanium backup
back up the apps you want to remove in there and from the same app there is an option to uninstall it

Ok, got TB. Is there a list somwhere of apps that are safe to remove from the sensation? Also, when ICS is released, will putting it on my phone myself erase anything I currently have or not work at all if I start removing apps? Sorry for all the questions, this is my first smartphone.

GS3DebugFSRoot Bloat Free?

Anyway, I wanted to know if the GS3DebugFSRoot rooting method removes all the bloat on the phone? Should I just go with this method or should I go the Odin method?

First, Welcome to XDA!
Back to your question, I am pretty sure that the GS3DebugFSRoot rooting method does not remove all the bloat from the phone. I personally think that the rooting method is better than the odin method, because it is faster and is a smaller download (waaaay smaller). However, the root you get from GS3DebugFSRoot is as good as any other root (because of the way root works). You can use that root access to remove the bloat you do not want.
In addition, after using Noxious Ninja's root method, you can use the root you get to flash a recovery to your phone, which you can use from there to flash many roms/mods/hacks/themes/etc such as CyanogenMod

It doesn't remove anything, just adds root/SU.

yosterwp, you lost me there. Isn't here a major thread of bricking or some other damage to the phone if I start removing some of the bloat myself? If I root the phone how would I know what can be safely removed?
Here is a list of what I'm looking for:
I want to be able to install APKs
I don't want any of the bloat from Verizon or Samsung
I would like to us HotSpot tethering
I don't think I need any custom mods
I do would like the ability to set it back to stock (with no trace of it having been rooted if possible)

Whoops! I guess a went a bit ahead of myself in that post. I'll look into your list in the order the criteria is put.
1. Umm, I believe you can install any apk you want even without root access (Go to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources and check the box). Now if the application requires SU, that's a different story and need SU access.
2. [This answers one of your main concerns too] I forgot where I found this thread, but I bookmarked this spreadsheet on Google Docs. It is a table showing what is safe to remove, what's risky to remove, and what you should not remove. However, if you are rooting for the sake of flashing a custom ROM, then you should forget removing the bloat, as the custom rom should be devoid of bloat to start.
3. HotSpot Tethering should already be on your phone without root or anything... Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot.
3.5. If you are talking about not using that (because your plan prohibits it) --I'd rather not be the one who encourages violating contracts...
4. If you want to return to stock without a trace of being rooted, get ready for a HUGE download. Go to this thread and use your preferred downloading method. And remember to grab Odin from the link on the page. Thank the OP if you can. Then boot your phone into download mode. [(in computer with phone plugged in) adb reboot download] and then fire up Odin. In odin, hit PDA and then navigate to the large download. Finally just to make sure the flash counter appears to have not changed, go to this thread.
You should be good to go from there. I make no guarantee that my instructions will work for you, but it should point you in the right direction. And if you have any questions, let the forum know!

Just have Odin installed and on hand. While the easy root solution is nice, it's still a good idea to be familiar with Odin as you're going to NEED it if you get yourself in a pickle or want to go back to fully stock.

If by recovery tool, you mean Odin, then i definitely would suggest getting Odin and the stock images for your phone. Hopefully you will never need it, but it is always good to have on hand. Familiarize yourself with it, especially if you are rooted.
If you are talking about a recovery partition, that is a definite must have when rooted! You can make complete backups of your phone in case something goes wrong as well. And it can do much more.
Now for the android crash course
If you are talking about developing apps, there is a user on YouTube, mybringback, who does excellent videos on developing apps on android for absolute beginners like me. I am not the greatest Dev (in C++ and Java), but his videos gave me a good foot into Java.
If you are talking about developing for the actual android system, then honestly, I have no clue. Many places will tell you how to download and build the source, but not much else... I am still trying to find a site that explains the source...

Looking for stripped down rom for 6.0.1 without any of that bloatware installed stuff like that, im using SM-G900P.
Anyone point me in the right direction.

Nothing stocked based that i know of. Your best bet is to request a debloat list, and freeze or uninstall system apps with titanium backup.

I went ahead and went with the CM13

So to piggy back off of this thread with out hijacking it, just wanted to say I just got a brand new sprint Samsung Galaxy s5...yay! (Replaced my Sprint Samsung Galaxy s2)... The phone already downloaded and installed 6.0.1 and so far surpringly I really like it.
But as noted above it just has too much bloatware.
I haven't seen a thread on rooting with Marshmellow, so is it safe to assume that I can use the normal method via Odin, root it, then push CWM recovery on it? Or, should I just root the actual phone? (I've always rooted the phone but changed to a different rom, where this time I actually like the stock rom, but just want to be able to get rid of junk, disable camera shutter noise, and be able to back up the phone, then with a later possibilities of flashing a new rom ..etc.)

You should check out this ROM. It's marshmallow, and it has option for de-bloater.
I used the extreme debloat and it took 95% of the stuff i would've removed.

TWRP, Root, modify system (adaway, etc), and unroot help

Hi,
Bassically I'm just trying to get my phone to be unrooted to pass SafetyNet (Android Pay, Pokemon Go, and others) but have some system modications (adaway and removed boot sounds mainly).
What I did do is flash stock odin firmware (PG1), then twrp, supersu, and make my changes. Then if I just unroot with supersu it still fails SafetyNet. If I unroot and tell SuperSU to restore boot.img then I get a bootloop. Probably due to TWRP still being there and not stock Recovery? So I thought maybe from there I can just flash boot and recovery via odin but that didn't seem to work either. Is it possible to take the stock firmware and flash whatever I need except system? Or not possible to alter system and go back to stock boot/recovery?

That no longer works to pass SafetyNet. Last couple weeks there have been a couple of root/xposed solutions only for Google to changes SafetyNet and detect it. So I was thinking of just getting rid of root but hopefully keeping the couple system mods I like...

Not much help in here. Anyone know of a way to have a modified system but no root (or recovery if I don't need twrp)? Mainly I'd just like to update my hosts file and remove the stupid reboot "ding".
My hope was to modify system via twrp/supersu and then flash recovery/boot to get it back to stock but there must be some sort of check because that just causes dm-verity failed notification in stock recovery. I can unroot via the SuperSU app but unrooting and telling it to restore stock boot.img causes loop. Unroot and tell it to leave boot.img lets my phone work but still doesn't pass safetynet checks.
All this work makes me miss my HTC phones. They seemed so much easier to manipulate.

This guy's solution lets me have a stock system with some system modifications. So now I have what I wanted, passing Safety Net, removed boot sound and applied adaway hosts file!

I know yur post is pretty old bug i just got my note recently but i had no idea there was such a lack in development for sprint version. If u did end up accomplishing unroot with eneabled security, let me know. Thanks

That will unroot it but you'll also lose all system modifications so it'll be stock again. I wanted adaway hosts file and a couple other system mods. What I posted above did work for me but about six weeks ago I exchanged my Note 5 for a new one (camera died on the old one) and haven't rooted. I enjoy using Samsung Pay so I haven't tripped Knox yet.

Help rooting Samsung galaxy j3 (sm-J337a)

It seems everywhere I go there is no root for this phone (sm-J337a) it's an at&t phone. I used kingoroot, kingroot and basically any root out there. nothing has worked. So this seems that it has no root made for it yet? is there any possibility for someone to do this? Sorry, I'm not too good at rooting as a whole. But I've used Odin and things like that before.

it's running Android 8.0 and was made in 2018.

Hi all.. I know this thread is a little old but thought id add this.. As of this date Ive found no ROOT solution for the SM-J337A - AT&T variant either.. I have found a lot of other software and such and as soon as I can get it all sorted, cataloged, and uploaded to the cloud I will see about placing some links here somewhere to all of them.. Not sure how long it will be..Stay tuned...
I happen to inherit a J337A with a cracked screen but was working fine until I updated it and tryed ROOTing it.. Im still Playing with it to see if I can revive it.
Having issues finding a UB compatible Firmware set that I dont have to pay for.
Am needing "J337AUCSBBTI1" or maybe "J337AUCSABTE1" to see if I can bring it back to life.. I may end up pitching it tho...

I can help you with that if you still need it. I have my j3 rooted with magisk, although there is no twrp or any custom recovery for that matter..
I can give you the exact files along with the patched magisk file and you'll have to flash it with patched odin and you should be good. Let me know.

Instead of sending a patched magisk file would you mind sending over the method you used to root? If you did what I think you did I'm very confused. The phone is OEM locked although this hasn't stopped others from accessing root before. If you can confirm you have the phone we have, the SM-J337A ATT then you can pull out the boot and recovery images using a root app. Then I could develop a working TWRP for our device. But ofc this is only possible if you explain how you went about rooting the device. Thanks in advance.

I have both SM-J337P/A and it works the same on both. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to be oem unlocked? You mean greyed out? Or does it not show up at all or what? If I go into developer options I have the oem unlock option, which then allows me to unlock the bootloader. If yours is greyed out I saw a solution on XDA a long time ago, maybe a year ago. I'd have to look for it in my files, I know I saved it somewhere. Let me know what you meant by that and we can go from there

I do not have the option to OEM Unlock the phone period. It is not in my developer options unfortunately. If you do find something of that nature please do contact me. Also if you would like a TWRP for your device I'd be up to developing it, although I wouldn't be able to maintain bugs... All I need is the kernel and I can get it done.

Any updates on this?
