Maybe it's just me, but I always thought that the bootloader and the OS were separate entities. Unlocked bootloaders were promised yes, but, the promise to keep exploits in the OS for rooting was not promised. These are 2 SEPARATE ENTITIES!
Correct.

I don't think it will be hard for any of the talented developers we have here to root the OTA ROM. Obtaining S-Off after accepting the update might be another matter, and accepting the update on a rooted but otherwise stock TBolt might break root. But as long as you've rooted before the GB update I'm sure we'll be fine. It's the poor suckers who haven't rooted waiting for the update, and once it comes decide they want to root that I feel sorry for.
don't install the OTA until it's cracked by the devs, simple as that. i give it a day or two and it would be rooted. they never close all the root exploits.

As said, the BootLoader and rooting the OS are two different things..
That being said... I expect the DEV's to root upcoming GB updates... After all, chingy51o just created Gingeritis v1.2 from a new "non-test" GB rom... and its rooted.

Building a rom that has root access is not the same thing as gaining root access on an existing installation.
Its not really the same thing, but think about having admin rights on a machine with windows already installed, verses installing it yourself. If someone else has secured the machine, getting admin could be quite hard (stfu peanut gallery, I know that's only in theory).
If you install from scratch though, you just have to tell it to make you admin
What this means though, is with source, bootloader is everything. They can lock the rom down three ways from sunday, but if devs have source, and an open bootloader, we can install WTF ever we want on the phone.
Its silly that they are so quiet with updates its not like they are launching a spy satellite but anyway. Phase 2 out of how many phases? Just curious what their proper procedure is.

I understand the analogy of admin rights on windows already vs a regular user trying to get admin rights after the fact.
I'm not a developer, nor do I know the first thing about creating a "custom rom"... so my thought is... Chingy51o used a "GB leak that is newer than the last" as the base to create Gingeritis v1.2 which is rooted.... How much harder can it be for the DEV's to put out an already rooted/busyboxed version of that GB ROM Chingy used as the base?
And if that is possible... then the S-Off/Root processes (where you flash to older rom first to exploit...) could be used by those who took the upgrade... and flash the already rooted ROM, no?

You might not be able to downgrade once you accept the update, this happened on the Incredible. They had rooted 2.1 on the Incredible, then there was an OTA (still 2.1) which required you to downgrade to root, similar to what we're doing now. When Froyo came out, of you accepted the OTA there was no way to downgrade and root. We (I personally) had to wait for them (the unrevoked team) to crack froyo to gain root access. I would suggest you root now, then wait for someone to release a rooted version of the OTA. Just my experience in the matter.
Why not flash an older RUU that has the known exploit?

I'm not saying you won't be able to after the GB OTA on the Thunderbolt, but on the Incredible after the Froyo OTA you could not flash an older RUU. That's my knowledge on the subject.

Sorry, my memory on each phone and their specific quirks is fuzzy (between the D1, X, INC and TB, and add in the NookColor and Xoom, and I sometimes have troubles remembering)
But I do remember a friend had sent me his Inc for my then fiance (now wife)... he didn't S-OFF, took an update and lost root... So when I got it, I had to jump through a few hoops to get her's S-OFF and rooted as the Unrevoked tools didn't work on that version yet.
Are you thinking that the Dev's wont be able to pack a pre-rooted/busybox'd/SU version for those with S-OFF and root already?

I think they absolutely will be able to, in fact I almost know so. I'm simply not sure how easy it will be to obtain s-off after accepting the update. I could be wrong, it's happened before, I think it was on a Tuesday...
Edit: In other words, I think it would be wise to obtain s-off while on 2.2 then wait for one of our wonderful developers to provide a rooted version.
It seems HTC's 2.3.4 Gingerbread builds are quite secure. I guess all builds of it are, not just HTC's. I have just noticed a trend with HTC's builds being rather difficult to obtain even temp root.

Hopefully people are looking into it now that the new GB rom has leaked.
AlphaRevX managed to unlock the bootloaders on the evo 3D and sensation. Don't see what would be diffrent on the Thunderbolt if it gets locked down again.
Hello. I have been triying to root my Sony Tablet S again, since my sister updated it to build 10. Previously had it rooted in buld 6. I had an OTA Backup of Build 6. But now i cannot root it again, since sony patched it. My OTA Signed Backup is Region 2 (signed-nbx03_002-ota-0042.002). Maybe LA. Anyway, is there a way that the OTA Backup could get decrypted, and intentionally sign it to downgrade the tablet to Build 6 (Maybe making an incremental on the prop.builld)?? Just a thought. But since no exploit has been found lately. I thought maybe that could be a way for me to get it back on root.
Since i still cannot post in the develepment area for Sony Tablet S. I Post it here. I hope someone can help me. Thx. in advance.

So I finally got a pixel after lurking around for a while and ended up with a Verizon version. Luckily the dePixel8 fix got the BootLoader unlocked as it wasn't updated yet. Now that I've got the bootloader unlocked, I haven't done anything with it yet. I used to root all of my android phones (Nexus 5, 6, 5x...) and do all kinds of cool things, but as of the 5X, everything I used to root to do is now baked into the Pixel, so I haven't touched anything on it. The one thing I would love to use is Android-Pay... DOH
So, I am verizon phone (on t-mobile), bone-stock OS with an unlocked bootloader and no Android Pay due to failing safety-net. The question is, if I re-lock the bootloader, will I ever be able to unlock it again? Like I want to try a ROM etc? Or is my best bet to get the Kernel that patches the Safety-Net process?
My original thought process drug me to the kernel patch, but since I really haven't had a need to mess with my pixel, the whole process seemed far more involved than the simple desire to use Android-Pay... Which led me to thinking about just re-locking the bootloader... So, please help!
TIA!

I believe most of kernels have that safety net patch. Really painless to flash. You can just boot TWRP and flash kernel I believe

Ok, I'll bite... Is there a "preferred" kernel at this point? Digging through some of the threads on the different kernels is about a bunch of people having problems... I just want the safety-net patch, probably won't use the other features.

I usually just use the kernel that comes with the rom im on. And I use magisk. I have used ex kernel. I really like the ex manager app. And I do believe it still passes safety net with just unlocked bootloader. At least it used to. Google updated safety net this month so I don't know if that changes things.
Alright, I did it... TWRP RC2 + Elemental X sorted out my safety-net issues... Just concerned about legit updates to the phone. Guess I'll fgure that out when the time comes.
Thanks for the help!

You will probably be able to take the OTA with just a unlocked Bootloader, you will just have to boot TWRP and Flash that kernel every month. There also is a stock kernel someone builds for what you're trying to do
You can flash google's factory-image.
Then you can re-lock your bootloader and you can unlock it too.
Andorid is one of my hobbies, but I only have so much time to spend (isn't that always the case).
I bought this phone because I had to ship my V20 back to LG because I was a dumb a** testing a 9008 de-brick method and screwed up royally.
Anyway, I have the V10 now, so I might as well show it some love -- IF there is interest.
Please post your thoughts / ideas on what you would like to see for this phone.
Here is what I am going to release no matter what:
* An update.zip for MM to Nougat that is pre-rooted, and debloated.
* A ROM that people that are already on Nougat, will be able to flash clean that is pre-rooted and debloated.
Here are some ideas for things that I can do if there is interest:
* Port LineageOS
* Port AOKP
* Custom kernels with cool bells and whistles (this is another one that I may do no matter what).
Here are the things that I can't do:
* Get Xposed working on Nougat. The dude that wrote the framework is having problems, so that is not something I am going to waste my time on. See this article for details.
* Find an exploit to root Nougat if you took the update OTA, or flashed the KDZ, or used LG Bridge, etc...etc...
Feel free to post away with thoughts and ideas.

I still have mine and would really appreciate a clean lineage 7.1.2 port with Xposed installed
https://github.com/abforce/xposed_art_n/blob/master/README.md
Most likely means losing the DAC, and quality camera, of course.
At bare minimum a flashable debloated with optimaztion would be awesome. Most people have left LG devices though, due to their brick, reboot, more strict root/recovery issues.
I like the phone which is why im trying to get it to work.this is my second v10 but ive taken some anti bootloop measures this time.phone works fine just network locked and cant find any way to unlock it lol.
I really like this phone and any addition is awesome. I appreciate your earlier posts and cannot thank you enough for your guide. I'm on mm dirtycow root and have not flashed 7.0 yet because I use xposed don't know yet if the (sp)Magisk frameworks will do what I'm doing with xposed. But I do want to flash 7.0 soon so thanks.
I am very interested
Yes!!! Would porting an updated TWRP also be a project you could do haha?
Yes to this

Just a heads up, it's Only for 7.1.2 rooms, for now
root & custom recovery for nougat 7.0 . mine is h901 sticker but its f600l board & ( f600l firmware now )
Better people than me are working on trying to root Nougat on other devices and not having any luck. Well ... Nougat that has had dirtycow patched....
The easier (and I am going to try and crack this) way is to figure out why you guys can't roll back to MM. The anti-rollback version hasn't changed, so it is just a matter of figuring out why the flash won't complete.

As for the interest in this phone... v10 is still my daily driver. So I am very interested!
Now with Nougat in there, it feels like a new phone, and def. not ditching anytime soon. Got some months left on my installment plan anyway xD haha.

eigokyoukan,
On Nougat V10 can you check google map settings-->Navigation settings and see if the "Play voice over bluetooth" option is missing?
From what i have seen 7.0 removes this and you can no longer play directions over the phone if bluetooth is connected.
thanks
A LineageOS port would be amazing!
someone here https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/help/flashed-h901-h960-comrade-to-help-t3429025 managed to change hex values of kdz and flash a h901 onto a h960 with lgup.i myself tried this but it didnt work.either says its not the right file for the device or kdz file is invalid if i change all the hex values. this user also had the same problem but he fixed it, not sure how since the edited file he posted was deleted and he is not active anymore.I could have compared it. in lgup it passes the anti-rollback but gets stuck at modem.also seems you can only run upgrade when even trying to downgrade.
I'm still very much interested in this phone! I would love to see an AOKP type vanilla Android type of ROM. Even if it's not super customizable, it should just be vanilla Android with root.
I'm definitely interested.
And if it's possible, I pretty much want to know how to revert back my v10 from F600L nougat to Tmo again (it was Tmo).
Also in case someone is already updating on lg bridge or flash kdz, does he need to downgrade again to use your release?
Thank you

After riding the HTC and Samsung wagons for quite a while, I have purchased the Oneplus
I have been browsing around the other threads for the 7 and 8 models and it looks like OnePlus typically releases the firmware and/or recoveries right away when a new model is launched. Does anyone know if this will be the case for the 8t?
I want to get root out of the way before setting up the new device when it arrives, so I was hoping a dev already has the boot img uploaded somewhere or it was coming soon.
Does anyone care to elaborate on what expectations should be for this type of stuff?
Thanks in advance!

If you've around here awhile, you should know that you shouldn't ask about timelines. They'll be available when they're ready.
It's shipping with R out of the box and has new ways of doing things that will take time to figure out. Past availability times shouldn't be used to gauge availability on new phones.

There is no need to add the useless commentary. I appreciate your reply but I wasn't asking for timelines from a dev or some modification to be done. I wanted to gauge the typical expectations of people have who are current OnePlus users for things like firmware, updates, etc.
For example, HTC is terrible at getting out new updates and has not provided timelines or expectations for firmware updates in like the last year + for their last two flagship models. Samsung is very consistent with software releases and public schedule announcements. These are important to a lot of users and it was tough to determine this when reading the other forums for other OnePlus devices.
Past availability is frankly the only way to estimate when things like this might be available to us. Most companies don't change the way they do everything just because there is a new product being released. If you want to help with that information instead of being negative, I welcome your assistance!
There is typically a monthly update in firmware, with possibly more frequent ones in the beginning if there are issues.
I wouldn't necessarily expect root for at least a week or 2 on any new phone, especially with a new OS.

Thank you! Good info!
OnePlus phones can be rooted as soon as you have the bootloader unlocked, and you have either TWRP booting (data decryption does not need to work), or stock recovery patched to accept ADB commands.
Once you can pull the stock kernel, you can patch it with Magisk, boot off it in fastboot, then direct install through Magisk inside the OS.

Thanks! You gotta love companies who don't actively discourage or block rooting!
Can you confirm which TWRP version is working on R/11 for Oneplus? I see the instantnoodle version people are using for the 8/pro; will that do the trick? It has been a while since I had to root and I honestly forget if it is the root or unlocking the bootloader which wipes the device, but I at least hoped to get that done before setting up the device.

I don't know what version is out there right now. My OP8T doesn't come until tomorrow, and I will be at least 40 days out from rooting since T-Mobile won't SIM unlock (generally) until that time, and you need to be SIM unlocked in order to unlock the bootloader.

It has been a while since I had to root and I honestly forget if it is the root or unlocking the bootloader which wipes the device, but I at least hoped to get that done before setting up the device.

Just to follow up on this so others can avoid it, flashing TWRP does not work. Neither the TWRP vanilla edition nor the isntantnoodle edition worked and went straight to Qualcomm Crashdump mode in both.
I guess it is now a wait for the OTA to download
