So I finally got a pixel after lurking around for a while and ended up with a Verizon version. Luckily the dePixel8 fix got the BootLoader unlocked as it wasn't updated yet. Now that I've got the bootloader unlocked, I haven't done anything with it yet. I used to root all of my android phones (Nexus 5, 6, 5x...) and do all kinds of cool things, but as of the 5X, everything I used to root to do is now baked into the Pixel, so I haven't touched anything on it. The one thing I would love to use is Android-Pay... DOH
So, I am verizon phone (on t-mobile), bone-stock OS with an unlocked bootloader and no Android Pay due to failing safety-net. The question is, if I re-lock the bootloader, will I ever be able to unlock it again? Like I want to try a ROM etc? Or is my best bet to get the Kernel that patches the Safety-Net process?
My original thought process drug me to the kernel patch, but since I really haven't had a need to mess with my pixel, the whole process seemed far more involved than the simple desire to use Android-Pay... Which led me to thinking about just re-locking the bootloader... So, please help!
TIA!

I believe most of kernels have that safety net patch. Really painless to flash. You can just boot TWRP and flash kernel I believe

Ok, I'll bite... Is there a "preferred" kernel at this point? Digging through some of the threads on the different kernels is about a bunch of people having problems... I just want the safety-net patch, probably won't use the other features.

I usually just use the kernel that comes with the rom im on. And I use magisk. I have used ex kernel. I really like the ex manager app. And I do believe it still passes safety net with just unlocked bootloader. At least it used to. Google updated safety net this month so I don't know if that changes things.
Alright, I did it... TWRP RC2 + Elemental X sorted out my safety-net issues... Just concerned about legit updates to the phone. Guess I'll fgure that out when the time comes.
Thanks for the help!

You will probably be able to take the OTA with just a unlocked Bootloader, you will just have to boot TWRP and Flash that kernel every month. There also is a stock kernel someone builds for what you're trying to do
You can flash google's factory-image.
Then you can re-lock your bootloader and you can unlock it too.

Hey fellas, I got my Verizon GS3 last Thursday knowing that it had a locked bootloader but was hoping someone would figure out how to get root. Now I see that it has been rooted but is it "completely" rooted? What I mean is, can I overclock it, flash kernals, custom roms, wifi tether? Does it have the same capabilities of all three of the other US carriers' GS3s? Is Cyanogenmod developing CM9 for it yet? I was reading somewhere that you can root it just like any other version but it's just a bigger pain in the ass. I just want to make sure that my Verizon GS3 can be completely rooted so I can do everything I did with my old Droid. Should I just take it back and go with the Sprint version of the GS3? Im sorry if some of these are "noob" questions but I just want to figure out what I should do. Any help would be much appreciated!
Rooting and the other things you spoke of are not the same thing.
Rooting = The ability to write to the system partition, while booted into android. This allows you to delete system files (such as bloatware).
Locked Boot Loader = You will not be able to flash custom files (unsigned) to the phone from Odin. This means no clockwork recovery, roms, kernels ect....
There are ways around some of the locked boot loader stuff on some phones (ex. droid 2 got a special recovery through months of dev work. This did not cicrumvent the locked boot loader, but allowed away around it). This type of recovery (2nd init) is not avalible for Samsung phones.
If you want roms and all access, I would go with the dev unit samsung is selling for verizon. However, there still may not be much for the VZW gs3 because they wont sell tons of the dev units at $600 a pop.
The Verizon S3 already has root, roms and kernels up and working and some really good devs trying to crack it. I have a VG3 and it was rooted in less than a day and I'm having no issues. It's a great phone but the locked bootloader may cause issue in the future.
If I knew that samsung was going to release a dev version I may not have pre-ordered my S3 but I"m still happy with my purchase so far. What I find amusing is the price stated on the dev phone right now is cheaper than buying the phone outright from big V right now. We will see what the price really is when the phone is made available.

Not true.
Touchwiz based custom roms are entirely possible and it has already been shown custom kernels work using kexec. Yeah it's not as good as an unlocked bootloader but we have our work arounds until these crazy smart devs figure out how to bypass the locked bootloader.
Sent from my SGS3

Thanks for the reply man! The dev phone just may be an option but I really don't feel like forking over $600 when I can go to Sprint on a cheaper plan and have an unlocked bootloader....either way, I have 10 more days to return my phone and cancel my contract if I need to. And btw, I sent a long email to Verizon asking them if they will ever unlock the bootloader ( I read an article saying they may, then today read a article saying they wont. We'll see.) I also said that I may just cancel my contract and go to Sprint and ask them how they can "help" relieve this situation that alot of people are facing. I'll report back and let everyone know what their response is.

There's some erroneous replies so far, hopefully this will clear it up for you. Root or superuser, is a linux term, which basically provides you with admin rights. With root alone you can run WiFi tether, rename system apps, etc. Root is easily attainable on the Verizon S3, see the dev section for guides.
The S3 recovery partition is NOT signed. This allows us to install custom recoveries (i.e. ClockworkMod, TWRP, etc.) This is very different from say, a Moto phone that had to use bootstrap methods. The S3 can have a fully functioning recovery that will allow you to do backups, flash ROMs and Kernels, etc. Again, very easy to do, see dev section for guides (it's grouped with root).
What's currently being worked on is the "locked" bootloader. Basically we can write whatever we want to the various partitions, however, there is a security check being done that prevents altering various areas, like the boot.img. Right now there is a workaround where custom Kernels are flashed via the recovery partition (see recovery/kexec threads for more info).
There is no official CM9 or CM10 builds yet, but they are being worked on and there are bootable versions of both. Right now the RIL is the bigger issue as it's preventing data but that has nothing to do with the bootloader. The RIL is being worked on, no ETA.
tl;dr - The bootloader is still "locked" but there are already various workaround methods in place to allow for the flashing of custom recoveries, ROMs, Kernels, etc. Reading the guides in the dev section would be a great place to start understanding what's going on better.

This explains things alot better for me Thank you!!!. Im coming from a OG Droid that I rooted as soon as I got it so its been a while since I've been on the scene. I've kept up with the OG Droid Development for quite some time (which is basically nonexistent) so Im somewhat familiar with rooting and such just not familiar with this lock bootloader and such on my S3. Anyways, I still may just go to Sprint but havent made my mind up yet. And THANKS again for the very knowledgeable answer!
Guys, I have spent hours rooting and unlocking my S3. Reason it has taken so long is either I don't know what I'm doing or there are so many ways to do it, some may be outdated or something. I'll side with the first reason. But, I do have experience in rooting...kept my OG Droid rooted/overclocked/customized. Did the same with my Thunderbolt. Also rooted my S3 a few months ago after the VZW update that crapped out the radio. When they released the fix, I removed root and installed it. Got the urge for some new stuff and here I am...
Here is what I'm doing:
- Using CausalR795b. Seems quick and easy. Definitely provides root, but I'm not sure about unlocking the bootloader. What is the insecure aboot? Says it's ready to install it, but I can't find out what this is?
- Trying to install TWRP recovery. What is the easiest way to do this? The last time I did it with Goomanager, I got the Verizon Unauthorized Software message at boot.
- Trying to install the latest Hyperdrive ROM. Got it installed once and on reboot, got the VZW Unauthorized message again,
- Using ODIN 3.07 to flash a stock ROM after getting the error message.
Can anyone tell me a link with good directions, start to finish? Or, give me some advice? To me, at least, seems like VZW has made customizing the S3 unnecessarily complicated,
Thanks in advance.
Insecure aboot is the unlocked bootloader. Once you install that you will no longer get the VZW Unauthorized message.
First welcome to the community.
second, this is the wrong section.
third, you have to use D2VZW-CASUAL-R634b release to fully unlock bootloader

My bad...I did post in the wrong place. Wasn't even thinking about it. Had just spent so long in this subforum trying to find answers, must have lost my bearing.
I really appreciate your help! The older Causal did everything in one try with no hiccups whatsoever. Why isn't anything posted about this noted in the newer Causal thread? It might be in there somewhere and if I would have seen it, hours would have been saved.
Now rocking the newest Hyperdrive and probably going to try a few more ROM's. Thanks again!
I just got this phone and debating if I should root and unlock this phone. I'm a big fan of CM. I traded a friend for this phone. I used to have a gs5 and touchwiz was driving me crazy and that it could not be unlocked. This phone is way better. I have been rooting and unlocking since the days of the htc eris. I'll never buy another Samsung phone again. Sorry for the dumb post.
So do you have a question? Or what's the point behind the post
Yes, you should root and unlock. I have flashed more than a few roms on this pbone, but I have been on stock rooted for a couple months now. Mostly because it has the least amount of issues and most consistent performance. I got it all tweaked up though. IMO HTC did a great job on the stock ROM but to each there own.
And another big plus is that you can easily unroot and relock your phone back to 100% stock state (thankfully we have all the most recent stock ROM ruu's). So really as long as you know what your doing which it sounds like you do, you can only gain by rooting/s-off
No, wait a few weeks first so you know the phone works. You don't want to be those guys that spam issues in rom threads only to find out it's your phone and not the rom.
A rule of thumb I always follow is make sure it runs properly before you start modding. (Cars, phones, computers, etc.)
the real question is why wouldn't you unlock an S-OFF - full control over YOUR device for only $25 AND you can always go back to S-ON. :good:
I tried to unlock the boot loader through HTC Dev with no luck. My boot loader says ***software status*** Modified
***Locked**
He was running the phone on T-Mobile. I was wondering if he had it flashed to T-Mobile to work. Any Ideas!!
Never mind I just used sunshine apk and worked. Thank god
Bootloader still says modified. Only getting temp root, but s off

To get permanent root you will need to install a custom recovery and flash the supersu.zip and that will get you full root. You can then get rid of the temp root by uninstalling the apk
I figured it out. Its been awhile since I rooted and s-off. I already fixed the bootloader saying modified. Had to connect it to htcsync and do a repair. Thanks guys. I'm enjoying cm again.
I have successfully unlocked and am using the G930VL and installed the official verizon version rom to get rid of anything straighttalk related and it has been working great!
But....i want to install custom roms in order to do that i need CWM or TWRP. I cannot seem to get either one to install because of a "Secure check fail: recovery" message. Any suggestions?
also does anyone have a good link here on XDA for G930V/G930VL rom's?
I am rooted so this should be possible somehow what am i missing?

Is there any roms that will work? I have found things like King rom but that's for the edge. Even so...how would i install it without TWRP? Would i have functionality issues with G930VL? I haven't had to install from ADB in a long time but if someone guides me i'd still be willing. The reason why this is an issue is i can't get out of the security messages that happen in the OS. Every time i boot it keeps saying i have to reboot because it finds a problem (due to it being rooted)....1 time my phone wouldn't even boot up which is when i installed the official verizon OS and wipped everything straighttalk except the bootloader(for obvious reasons i'm not touching that!).

You'll have to ask the folks in that thread, i don't have any answers for you except that thread that i looked over before.
With Qualcomm Snapdragon's security feature DM-Verify, it is extremely unlikely. Even if you took the stock image from Verizon and did nothing more than deodex it, dm-verify will not allow the ROM to boot (from what I've read). There are other security features that prevent the Bootloader form being messed with.
Root was a dream come true. An unlockable bootloader (while a developer version does exist) is a more unachievable dream.

"I have successfully unlocked" what type of unlock are you speaking of?
Just rooted my phone and was curious to know if any custom roms exist yet for this phone. Because from what I can tell TWRP is not compatible yet.
I've seen 2, Lineage 18 and Pixel Experience. Did you by any chance flash any yet, since posting this? I've also been hesitant since we have to manually flash the files I guess in fastboot since yeah we don't yet have TWRP. I know how to do that but I've never actually done it. I guess since I've already handled BL unlocking, and patched image root I probably can handle it.
