Ok so I'm going to pick up a s8+ and the seller has this particular model for sale brand new. Are there any cautions I should be aware of? Can it be blacklisted here in the USA?

You could always be extra safe by checking the imei number on swappa or where possible.

Well when I searched the model it showed up full price at bestbuy and Walmart as unlocked. So I'm very curious if it's the actual unlocked version from Samsung and not tied to any carrier.

The G955U1 is the US unlocked variant. It's what I have. What he was suggesting is to ensure that specific device imei is legit via Swappa or the like.

nope. what he's asking is. if this model. the unlocked version. even if is already paid in full CAN BE BLACKLISTED? how.... if the owner after selling claim a lost/ theft claim using (example...geeksquad warranty if he got it before selling) the previews owner get the replacement. what will happen to the one the OP bought.
or even if someone put a claim on it, will it never get blacklisted.

Yeah exactly lol. Since it's not a specific carrier, should I be worried? The guy even has it listed on eBay with 100% satisfaction results. So I just wanted to check before buying. $600 seems like a good deal to me.

Considering the 955U1 isn't sold by any carriers, it shouldn't be blacklisted unless reported lost or stolen.
However, it could always be a 955U that's been flashed to a 955U1, since that is possible.
And 955U's can indeed be blacklisted by any of the carriers they've been purchased from.
Get the IMEI of the phone, check with your carrier and on Swappa if the IMEI/ESN is clean, go ahead with the purchase, otherwise stay away.

So I recently purchased a Galaxy Note 3 from kijiji in Canada. Its the SM-N900W8. It was sealed when I bought it and the phone worked for a few days and is now blacklisted. I went to a samsung service center and they said that they can't do anything and my carrier Rogers said the same thing. Is there anything I could do? And is it blacklisted in only my country? Amd is there any way I could somehow change the imei or something? Is there anywhere someone can guide me?
Thanks in advance.

That's why I convince people to check the IMEI of the phone before buying. Now the only option you have is pay to unlock it and sell it internationally.
I could sell it internationally but I was wondering if the phone will be blacklisted there. Its been blacklisted with the CWTA in partnership with GSMA. So what carriers would it work with. I was thinking about selling it in Tanzania but am not sure if it will work there. Called the police and also the carrier and both said nothing can be done. Also called samsung and got the same response. Thanks for the help much appreciated. Also can I just buy a new motherboard and change it from the existing one? And where would I get this new motherboard?

There is actually one other way, but it is not cheap. This is more for the people that will follow this after Irfdiddy as his question was posted so long ago, but you can replace the mainboard in the phone with one that has a good IMEI, they can be found on ebay...if at all. Sadly, that is where Irfdiddy got ripped off...
Hi guys:
I bought a Galaxy S8 64GB from somebody. I exchanged my Galaxy S7 Edge and $100 dollars for it. I have AT&T and of course the phone is not unlocked and does not read mi sim card. I have tried reaching to the guy even calling from another phone and when I told him he just hung up.
I paid a unlock service but it says it will take about 3 to 7 days. I now have a Galaxy S5 Active im using until. What can I do? any help?
Thanks,
Wait the 3-7 days for the unlock service....Since you have th S5 active that will hold you down in the mean time.

Not much unfortunately if the SIM is locked to Sprint. Maybe someone else can shed some light on what happens when you flash another U.S. carriers ROM on a phone sold by a different carrier. Meaning if you Odin flashed an AT&T ROM on your Sprint phone would the radio take on the characteristics of AT&T? I'm thinking that the IMEI will forever be identified to Sprint since it was sold as theirs no matter what you do s/w wise.
I'm guessing the guy you bought it from bought it on an installment plan. That or he received it via UPS/FedEx and reported it not delivered. Or worse, picked it up off someone who was supposed to have received its front porch. If there are unpaid installments Sprint won't unlock it. If it was claimed not delivered or stolen its IMEI is blacklisted which means it won't work on AT&T (or pretty much any carrier) no matter what you do.
You can check if the IMEI is blacklisted here. Although since we're talking 72 hours it might not be listed yet even if it was reported lost/stolen.

So, he gets a new Galaxy S8, since his phone was "lost/stolen" by paying for the deductible, he gets to sell YOUR Galaxy S7 Edge for some money, AND he has $100 cash to throw towards that deductible. I'm guessing the deductible will be $150 or $200 for the S8. So, how much can he sell your S7 Edge for? $400 or so?
https://protection.sprint.com/tep/en/faq.html
SPRINT TOTAL PROTECTION
Q: Is there a deductible charge or additional fee?
There is a $50, $100, $150 or $200 non-refundable deductible per approved insurance replacement (depending upon your device). Payment of the deductible is required upon approval of the claim.

Yes they all support different bands. Some share a few bands but most work best on that specific carrier themselves.
Flashing firmware does nothing to lock status. It has to be unlocked by operator or by code from 3rd party. You cant do anything now just wait for unlock code.

Why would you ever buy off of Craig's List when you can buy off of swappa? Stupid.
That guy is likely going to stop paying on that device and then it will be blacklisted and worthless. You made an expensive mistake. Next time, buy off of swappa.
If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

Hello,
Recently bought an EE Pixel off eBay, was told it would just need to be unlocked. Attempted to unlock it at a local (Canadian) business, no can do. Bought an ee unlock code from eBay, seller refunded it because phone is coming up as blacklisted.
What are my options? Is this just an expensive paperweight? My Samsung S7 Edge is beginning to give out and I would like to switch to this Pixel ASAP.
Using 7.1.2, bootloader is locked, I haven't done anything with the phone.
Willing to pay for this, please help!
Hello
I am in the same situation. Is there any way it can be fixed? Or there are just bricks ?
Thanks
Normally a blacklisted phone cannot be activated and no matter how hard you try to change it, it will remain blacklisted. A device is normally blacklisted because it was reported lost, stolen, etc. Always verify that the ESN is clean before purchasing a used device. You may be able to get help from eBay if the seller sold a blacklisted device with a deceptive listing...

Sometimes it can be removed from the blacklist but that all depends on the phone, the reason for the blacklist and even still it can be expensive if it is even successful.
Edit: Your best bet is try to get it swapped for a good phone or return it through ebay or using buyer protection.
Look on craigslist or somewhere for techs who unlock, remove blacklist, etc from phones. They will change the emei for you but these people are hard to find nowadays as they don't have much business because everyone is financing.

Hi, I would like to buy a used Pixel 2 off Craigslist and since I am not familiar with the Pixel 2 I hope you can help me make sure I don't get scammed.
I know I need to check that the IMEI is not blacklisted (can run it through the swappa IMEI checker). I can also probably put my SIM card in it before I pay to make sure.
I would like to buy the Unlocked (non Verizon) one. Is there a way to identify that they are giving me the non Verizon version?
Anything else I should check when I get to physically inspect the phone?
Thank you!

One suggestion is to check the OEM unlocking toggle, and see if it can be used. If it's greyed out, it's almost assuredly a Verizon model.

Thank you!

To be honest mate it is always risky when you have no warranty, the phone may not be blocked when you buy it but there is nothing stopping the person blocking it afterwards
What could they possibly stand to gain by doing that?

Some people just suck.
Also, be careful that it's not one of the refurbs that you can't unlock the bootloader. Lots of folks have complained about this issue, and I don't believe it was ever resolved.
Amazon or Swappa would be safer options since there's some buyer protection. I'd also only buy a used Pixel 2 if the seller had the original receipt from Google to transfer ownership/ warranty.

If they have insurance, they can claim they lost it and get a replacement. The claim would get the original phone blocked. I work in a second hand retailer trust me happens a lot.
I really appreciate all this important information! Thank you.
