Buying Pixel 2 on Craigslist any tips to avoid issues? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hi, I would like to buy a used Pixel 2 off Craigslist and since I am not familiar with the Pixel 2 I hope you can help me make sure I don't get scammed.
I know I need to check that the IMEI is not blacklisted (can run it through the swappa IMEI checker). I can also probably put my SIM card in it before I pay to make sure.
I would like to buy the Unlocked (non Verizon) one. Is there a way to identify that they are giving me the non Verizon version?
Anything else I should check when I get to physically inspect the phone?
Thank you!

One suggestion is to check the OEM unlocking toggle, and see if it can be used. If it's greyed out, it's almost assuredly a Verizon model.

To be honest mate it is always risky when you have no warranty, the phone may not be blocked when you buy it but there is nothing stopping the person blocking it afterwards

What could they possibly stand to gain by doing that?

Some people just suck.
Also, be careful that it's not one of the refurbs that you can't unlock the bootloader. Lots of folks have complained about this issue, and I don't believe it was ever resolved.

Amazon or Swappa would be safer options since there's some buyer protection. I'd also only buy a used Pixel 2 if the seller had the original receipt from Google to transfer ownership/ warranty.

If they have insurance, they can claim they lost it and get a replacement. The claim would get the original phone blocked. I work in a second hand retailer trust me happens a lot.

I really appreciate all this important information! Thank you.

I did something stupid

I bought a HTC one s for 200$ off of Craiglist (first time buying anything from there) came home and tried putting a SIM card in it doesn't get any signal. So i called tmobile up and they said to me the phone was block for fraud and they told me there isn't anything they can do about it. I tried calling n texting the seller back he would not respond. Is there anything i can do with the phone now or am i just stuck with the way the phone is now?

Not much you can do as far as T-mobile.
It could be SIM unlock to use on a different network, ie AT&T.
Meant to "quote" but gave you a "Thanks" LOL
i tried the free method of unlocking it but that didn't work. I thought i was coming up with the wrong code but turns out it was the correct code because i tried a online website that charge to unlock it and they gave me the same exact code i came up with and still haven't had any luck

Did you use a SIM card from a different carrier than T-mobile?

I'm curious as to why it will not work, is it because the phone imei was block by tmobile. Would that also block me from unlocking it. I look everywhere online n i can't seem to find a solution.

I have no idea what you can do OP but damn that sucks. Good luck with resolving it... now I'm going to think twice before buying a phone from Craiglist.
Always power up, insert sim and make a test call, text and data pull with any used phone purchase. Put the screen through tests, and the touch sensor. Test the headphone jack and all buttons. Look at water damage indicators.
There is a sim unlock thread in development section have you tried it? The only way than would be to change your imei though thats ILLEGAL! As ILLEGAL as stealing and buying the steal!

Does the wifi work fine? Hopefully it isn't a hardware issue!
Everything works fine the phone is practically new it came with the original box and everything. Its just block by T-Mobile carrier. I'll go check at a local cell phone shop and see if they can unlock it, to see if it works on another carrier. If it doesn't then got damnit I'm stuck with the phone way it is....

Making call., send text , .... On the phone before you buy still not enough. There are some asshole out there sell the phone;
1) then report stolen (assume they have insurance ) . Then whatever you do still meaningless.
2) they are on value plan ( they pay full price for thier phone in 20 month). Then they stop using tmobile.
=> both cases above will make tmobile lock your phone.
The most safety way to buy phone on craoglist now is have proof of purchase from the owner.

A proof of purchase from seller on CL does not insure you won't have these fraud problems.
To OP, I would file a police report.

no, with proof of purchase that shows the seller is the one who bought the phone from tmobile, then you can contact tmobile so they can unlock your phone and make the seller pays for what he/she did. If you file a police report, i assume they wouldn't do anything except you have to turn in the phone you bought. There are several topics on XDA discuss about this problem and the only loser is the buyer. I'm feel sorry for OP.
P/s: nasty things like this are happening more often on Craigslist lately, this is why i won't buy phone from craigslist anymore.

What these people are doing is buying the phone on a payment plan. Sell the phone on CL and not make the payments to Tmobile. Sometimes phone will work for a month till it get BL. There's no disputing that it was bought from Tmobile but no payment to then equal BL phone.

Yeah, that's the case make me pissed off. By BL a phone because some one not pay money for them, Tmobile just wastes their phone, make the buyer become such a loser and pretty angry to tmobile them-self . however, the winner is the a**hole who sold the phone...
Weirdest thing is that it can't be unlocked ?? Gosh

Not sure how it works in the States but here in the UK if your phone gets blocked it'll be blocked on all UK carriers.
If you put any sim card it checks against a database and notifies that it's barred.
No way around it apart from changing IMEI which is ILLEGAL.

clean imie means the phone is not blacklisted or stolen.
ready for activation really cant be axplained mch further. just means it is ready to use as soon as you activate or put a sim in it.
there a good bit of scams on ebay with phones, you may want to try a more safe site like swappa.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imei
A bad/dirty IMEI would mean either the phone was lost/stolen and reported as such (usually by the insurance companies), or that it was reported as lost/stolen, but actually wasn't, and the seller got a replacement or reimbursement for the phone and is now selling the original device.

Thank you both for your answers! Good to know it means that, because I thought it's an info like "IMEI is 000000..." so I wouldn't be able to use this phone. In my country, I have never heared of dirty/clean IMEIs so that's why I asked you about it.
And bweN, I would use Swappa, but thirst thing, I can't find this phone there (Galaxy S Relay 4G) and second thing, when I found it today, the seller won't let the phone to be shipped to other country than US.
Thank you for your answers again!

[Q] Motorola Droid Ultra XT1080M on ATT

Just a quick question I hope I can get a quick reply on.to help a friend. From what I can tell this phone should work on ATT with a carrier unlock. Just want to be 100% sure before I tell him to go ahead and buy one. But from what I can tell it should be fine (Although may or may not have 4G on ATT, but thats not hugely important).

It says it's unlocked for GSM carriers so you should be able to use your AT&T SIM without hassle, if not use ebay protect to get a refund

Thats what I thought. Just wanted to be sure. Ive never had to deal with bringing a phone from one carrier to another before. I know it needs to be carrier unlocked. Just wasn't 100% sure if GSM was ATT compatible. Also thanks for the advice on the ebay protect. Will let my friend know about that.

Please help me unlock my Blacklisted EE Pixel

Hello,
Recently bought an EE Pixel off eBay, was told it would just need to be unlocked. Attempted to unlock it at a local (Canadian) business, no can do. Bought an ee unlock code from eBay, seller refunded it because phone is coming up as blacklisted.
What are my options? Is this just an expensive paperweight? My Samsung S7 Edge is beginning to give out and I would like to switch to this Pixel ASAP.
Using 7.1.2, bootloader is locked, I haven't done anything with the phone.
Willing to pay for this, please help!
Hello
I am in the same situation. Is there any way it can be fixed? Or there are just bricks ?
Thanks
Normally a blacklisted phone cannot be activated and no matter how hard you try to change it, it will remain blacklisted. A device is normally blacklisted because it was reported lost, stolen, etc. Always verify that the ESN is clean before purchasing a used device. You may be able to get help from eBay if the seller sold a blacklisted device with a deceptive listing...

Sometimes it can be removed from the blacklist but that all depends on the phone, the reason for the blacklist and even still it can be expensive if it is even successful.
Edit: Your best bet is try to get it swapped for a good phone or return it through ebay or using buyer protection.
Look on craigslist or somewhere for techs who unlock, remove blacklist, etc from phones. They will change the emei for you but these people are hard to find nowadays as they don't have much business because everyone is financing.

Question Can I trade in my Verizon variant for an unlocked variant?

I got this as a gift through Verizon website and they don't know a thing about root/unlocked bootloader and they just got me the Verizon version. I'm not even going to try to explain why I want the unlocked version.
Aaannnyyywaaayyy lol. Is there a way I can just swap this out for an unlocked version or a site that does swaps like this? Is there maybe a root option without unlocked bootloader?
Someone suggested to buy the unlocked version and then return it with the Verizon one in the box. Probably not legal or would they even care? Probably won't do it anyway.
If you really want an unlocked one just sell the Verizon one through Swappa or a local marketplace as BNIB. Don't do #3 as they record the IMEI and serial number of the device that they send you. I'd imagine they'd give you an issue with returning the device when those don't match. Plus the whole legality issue.

If your finances allow it grab the unlocked one from the Google Store. BF sale is about to drop so $100 off right out the gate. If you open the Verizon one the value will drop.
If it's paid off already call Verizon to carrier unlock it for you maybe by unlocking it you'd be able to root cause I've got the pixel 6 from visible few months ago and i was allowed to rooted and visible has the same variant as Verizon only difference is that visible sells their phones carrier unlocked

Didn't think they would allow that but wouldn't hurt to try. You'd think more people would suggest this.

Carrier unlocking and bootloader unlocking are distinctly separate. Verizon variants are not bootloader unlockable.

It's controlled by IMEI whitelists. If Visible didn't specify they want OEM Unlocking to be disabled like Verizon does, Google doesn't blacklist the lots they buy.
Unlocked is $150 off on Google Store.
