I think I saw somewhere that it is not *mobile* HDR "qualified". Personally I don't care. I just got the u11 because my G3 broke and it seemed a good value. Anyway here's the link to where I saw the HDR thingy

No, the display does not support HDR video playback

So I took to normal non tech people and let them shoot pics (in auto) with the LG V10 and the iPhone 6s Plus.
https://youtu.be/73bYwnju8gg
The iPhone pictures looked nice but almost as if it was HDR as standard?
The video on the V10 also looked a bit stuttery which surprised me.
Nice video
Thanks for doing it.

There are some videos on YouTube that don't have that stutter at all. I personally believe comparisons using auto-modes are unfair comparisons, as one phones auto-mode is very different that anothers auto-mode. The best comparisons are when the user takes the best possible image/video they can with each phone.
That's... Really lame.
My Blackberry could do that. What the hell?
I don't use it often, but it's a great feature.
Geez. Any solution? Can i use a 3rd party camera? Even if can't use both cameras?

idk if it works
There's a camera icon displayed while recording that takes photos when you click it.

No there isn't?
I certainly can't seem to find it.
Probably another "enhancement" to the North American versions.
So Huawei doesn't give a damn about anyone outside China, go figure. Last Huawei device.
Nope, scratch that, I figured it out.
It doesn't happen if you record at 60fps.
Which is another problem, why can we record at 1080p 60fps but not 720p 60fps?
Regardless, can't record at 60fps and take photos at the same time. Super lame.
do you know if Htc u11 supports hdr videos from you tube?
No. It does not. It's a hardware feature.

No, XZP has LCD as well. So perhaps it's my fault to say "U11 won't get it". Perhaps U11 will get it.
I looked for the criterias to get HDR content on smartphone screen, I did not see any critical hardware/software regulation or something.
It's probably Google rolled this out for a small amount of phone models, and more to come.

In the photography world it's certainly not a screen dependant thing. Of course a display with a wider colour gamut will reap more benefits from HDR, but in theory it should work on any screen unless I'm missing something.
But I'm going to guess it'll be some weird marketing thing to make people buy certain phones and displays. But for what it's worth my Canon 6D takes HDR pictures and I can certainly notice the difference on my old Samsung TN panel, as well as a 10bit IPS panel...
Sadly it seems the market is turning it into an elite function where by you'll need a HDR panel, which to me sounds like a wide colour gamut/contrast ratio/jacked up brightness...
I'm guessing YouTube functions on a unique device tag, or device tag entirely, so custom ROMs should be able to change the marker to enable it on YouTube.
E.g. my brother's OP3 is recognised as a S8 on YewToob so he can view 1440p content...I'm guessing HDR videos should work too as the S8 supports the feature? If so I'll check when I get in tonight if this is the case.

I have a solution for this it's very easy and simple all you have to do is download YouTube vanced
I accidentally found it because they didn't mention it they only mentioned the capability of override the 1440p to 4k so we can watch 4k and it does it but no one heard of the hidden option that will allow you to force HDR
well I'm here to help forgive me because it's my first time to reply anyway
1 install it and bla bla bla u know the rest of the settings
now just like how to activate the developer option in Android this app has hidden developers option just go to IYBT SETTINGS and tap on about multiple times u will see that the developer option is unlocked refresh and stop the app completely go back to the app go override option and boom congratulations now u have HDR activated
THANK U
Hi,
I just played a YouTube video and noticed in quality settings 1080p 60fps HDR is available ! But why there is no mention anywhere of this HDR capability ? It's an important specification ! Someone else can check if the HDR is available too on Mi Mix 2S : https://youtu.be/1La4QzGeaaQ
Holy $h!t. I've owned 11 smartphones and not one has had this option in YouTube before.
That's pretty sweet.
That's awesome ? works here too on my Global edition
Does this mean that the Mix 2s is HDR10 compliant?, Or does it just mean the LCD panel is HDR?

I'm no expert on display tech, but I can't find anything online about it being HDR10 compliant. There is also only support for Widevine L3, so no HD Netflix, that requires L1, as do some other streaming services, however we do get HDR Youtube videos as seen above.
Maybe someone with a bit more display knowledge could chip in?
Also don't quote me on any of this, this is just what I found from a 20 min google session lol
I just found this on phonearena
I also noticed this in the YouTube app, but the colors are really washed out when playing HDR. So probably, the screen metrics are such that it CAN support HDR, but it doesn't have proper tone mapping, so it looks worse than SDR. So far it seems useless....

I downloaded this video in max resolution (1,1GO) and tried to play it with MX player. The colors seems a lot better in it but can't say if it's HDR or not...
On miui 10 (dont khow about 9), when you turn on hdr video on youtube and rotate phone landscape, it turns full brightness and maybe something else. Video looks very cool, like hdr photos, with light and dark parts on one image. On default videos rotating changes nothing

Maybe it's because of my outdated Vanced mod lol....
I compared my device playing HDR vs RN5 same video, Rn5 is lot lot lot more punchier.. my Mix 2s looks very washed. I dont know if HDR supposed to be like this or this is a bug or what.. Regular videos shows same clarity.

That's a bug.Maybe you should update your system or application?
Snapdragon 845-855 have supported hdr recording, so I wonder if this feature can at least be enabled on phones with very capable hardware..
Hdr is enabled by default in the camera app. It can be turned off however.

No. He meand HDR10 for videos... not pictures with HDR
Hdr10 is not very relevant right now. Future proof in a nutshell. The one plus already records in HDR, though I'm not sure which one in particular. The oneplus 7 pro is only officially certified to VIEW hdr10 content. I saw nothing about the phone being capable of producing it.
I haven't figure out to activate the HDR to watch videos
Does anybody knows how to do it?
@jetfire245 I'm not sure what you're talking about with future-proof. Maybe you're thinking of HDR10+ which only Samsung, and some international Phillips, TVs have? HDR10 has been around for at least 5 years.
