Hello everyone and sorry if this is not the right place to ask, but I am a little desperate and could use some of your advice.
I purchased a phone through ebay which was supposedly unlocked. I am in Argentina and I put my SIM card into it. While doing the initial set up, the phone kept trying to do a "Hands Free Activation", which failed and retried 5 times before letting me do anything else. After I gained access to the phone (after all the steps in the setup), I tried making a phone call and it worked. I received an SMS from my carrier (CLARO Argentina) and I was able to receive calls. However, data does not work. At one point, I got a message saying to insert the UICC card that came with the phone originally (I don't have that). I tried factory resetting. I am assuming the phone is unlocked as I was able to place calls, I get signal with my carrier, and so on. Under mobile networks, Network Operators is greyed out.
I have been reading here and on other places, that I might have to use a Sprint sim card for a while in the phone to get it activated?
I was wondering if someone can help me to get this working. I need to have data on my phone. At times, the phone says LTE, 3G, etc above the signal strength indicator, but goes away quickly. I tried the same SIM with my older phone, an LG G4, and it works perfectly.
Thanks again!

My MyTouch 4G slide has been sitting for a month or two after previously working fine. Now it powers up however it can't get a signal with my T-mobile SIM (or my wife's). I'm concerned that somehow the radio might have gotten fried. So far I've reflashed it back to stock, unrooted, and hard reset it a few times, nothing has worked.
If I go into Wireless & Networks, drop down to Mobile Networks, Then Network Operators, and "Search Networks", it takes a few moments and finds AT&T & T-Mobile (I'm in an area where my devices normally get full T-Mobile service). However when I try to connect to T-Mobile, I get a message saying "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network". Same SIM works fine in a G2, connected to T-Mobile.
Anyone have a way to test the phone radio, or perhaps have an idea on what it's issue is?
I have had this exact problem, and attempted the same solutions, but without success. Was working fine, and then 1hr later quit working and was not able to repair even after return to stock/deroot, etc. Doing warranted return, and just got replacement phone by mail for swap out from t-mo.
am a little worried about reroot and rerom in case I have another problem.
My device is doing the same thing. Not sure when it started... I havent used the MT4GS in a few weeks, picked it up and reset it back to stock everything, and it's not getting any service from any of my SIM cards. I unlocked it a while ago to use on AT&T prepaid SIM, and not even that will work... Any advice would be helpful...

I've used Z-Device Test by Zausan Innovacion Tecnologica to test just about everything on my phone.
I'm having a similar issue on mine after trying jupoeanutbear and failing. I have signal but data craps out at random times now.

Did you have to unlock the phone to do that?
I called AT&T and they said that they don't have the unlock code since they don't even sell the device, but that it works on sims outside the US. She seemed to imply that it won't work on tmobile but that if I go outside the US, and just put a sim in, it will work without me having to unlock the phone in anyway.
Can anyone verify this?
Thanks

Most customer service representatives are pure idiots .... Nexus S is a Google phone , so it's factory unlocked to any SIM card you use with it(you may or may not get 3G on other networks depending on the other network 3G frequencies , and if the forgein network has 3G on 900/1900MHz it will have 3G on this Nexus S)..
Hope this helps..
Well I went to tmobile and the guy put in a sim into the phone and the phone got no reception nor did it seem to recognize the sim at all.
So it seems that it isn't unlocked.
I tried putting in this code: *#7465625#
Its supposed to tell you if the phone is unlocked or not, but nothing happens, it just says: Connection problem or invalid MMI code.
I don't need it to work on tmobile, but I do need it to work on foreign simcards. And I saw on other forums that for some people it worked on tmobile and others it didn't so there doesn't seem to be any clear answers.

you have another issue here , check your phone
Thanks for the response.
What do you mean by other issue and how should I be checking my phone?
In any case, I put in a simcard that my brother gave me which I believe is from Mozambique on a carrier Vodacom. It asked for the code of the sim when I put the phone is as always, and so I got in putting in 0000.
It then showed no connection to anything whatsoever, also as always.
Keep in mind I did have wifi on.
Then all of a sudden it asked me to update my phone and install something. So I just said yes and it updated and rebooted.
All of a sudden I have bars here and there and it recognizes that tmobile and AT&T are in the area. I also saw I think at the top of the notification bar when I pull down the notifications tab, it said Vodacom. Of course I get no reception whatsoever but that is expected, this sim was a gophone sim in Mozambique.
Does this mean that its unlocked if it is recognizing another sim, even though no confirmation of reception? I plan to try again with tmobile now and perhaps make sure I have wifi connection while doing so and leave it in for longer.
Thanks and please let me know if you have any thoughts.
what ROM you're on now?stock or costum one ? you also might consider a FULL phone wipe.because this might be caused by a difference between at&t apn or other Sim data and the other .check for that
I'm on stock 2.3 that the phone came with. Haven't messed with it at all.
So I assume you saying that if I want to switch to another sim, I should do full phone wipe then? so that the at&t apn doesn't confuse it?
IF it doesn't work with tmobile again, I will try taht, and I will also try to learn what an apn is.
Thanks for the help.
Might work or might not !!! backup all your data and apps first then use the shotgun method lol
But what I am sure of is that Nexus S phones are always unlocked and SIM free..
My husband finally let me root and rom his S3 (I have a Gnex). Unlocking the bootloader and rooting (using Odin) went well. When I installed SlimBean+GApps, however, we started having an issue. He kept losing 3 & 4G signal. We didn't know about the roaming issue, so I had not backed up the IMEI. I flashed Clean Rom, and the issue is partially fixed.
The phone's signal is fine now, 3-4 bars 4G most of the time. The trouble is, we can't dial out to any numbers, and any calls to the phone go straight to voicemail. We've pulled the sim card and let it sit for a bit, but that didn't help. Dialing *228 (as Verizon tech support had him do about 4,583 times) just brings up a message about the phone being activated by the sim card, and roaming capabilities being updated. All tech support had to say was that Google Voice was probably the problem, even though we've both had it for ages with zero issues. :/
Any ideas? I don't really want to unroot and take it in to the Verizon store, but I will if there is no alternative.
EDIT: Just discovered that 4G is only working when "Preferred network mode" is set to Global, rather than LTE/CDMA.
*228 is for 3g phones only, it does absolutely nothing for LTE sim phones. Here's your solution btw.
I knew it! I kept telling them I didn't think that was supposed to do anything when I have a sim card. Crazy first string tech support. They also didn't know my battery was removable.
Will try the things listed in that link, thanks.

Haha Verizon lost credibility with me when I rented their global phone for travel last summer and when I got back to the US the instructions to get my GSIII working began with dialing *228. There wasn't even a warning about it being unnecessary for LTE sim phones.
Good luck and let me know how that goes.
Yesterday, I received a new StraightTalk MicroSIM (ATT compatible) for my new Nexus 5. I have been using a StraightTalk T-Mobile compatible one that I used in my old phone. I activated the new SIM, using the automated phone system. This morning I saw that my phone still had no service. That is, zero bars, I cannot make calls or text. Of course data doesn't work either. I logged into my account and it said that the transfer to the new SIM is complete. So I called StraightTalk and was transferred 5 times to people who did the same trouble shooting with me every time. Their trouble shooting: power off your phone, take out your SIM and then start it back up. Then they said they need to send me a new SIM card.... Here is my issue, I feel like they don't know what they are doing so their answer is just to send me another SIM.
My question: Did anyone else have this experience or ideas on getting the phone to work? I've tried different APNs with no different results.
Okay, this is odd. I figured, since I won't have phone service for a while, I would root my phone. After I rooted my phone, everything works. I can make calls and data works. Not sure what changed but when the device was rooted, it also did a factory reset. After 50 minutes of crappy customer service, I think I'll just take the new SIM card they are sending.
Takes a while for them to activate it sometimes. I was with customer services for 2 hours trying to activate my Sim card because it wouldn't let me online.
Their customer service, signal penetration might suck, but it's way cheaper, which I'm good with.

I wonder if maybe that is what happened but I think it probably had to do with the factory reset.
I do want to post one final thing since everything has played out today... On the phone I asked them to expedite the package since this is my work phone and ONLY phone. Today, FedEx delivered a new SIM card... it was the card only. No other packaging or information. It was the wrong SIM... I needed a micro and they sent a regular SIM... but at least they tried. After receiving the SIM today, I don't feel so bad about the situation. Things may have been different if my phone didn't miraculously start working. I would have had to cut down the regular sized SIM... to find out if it is an ATT or Tmobile version... it's probably the Tmobile versions, since I ordered the ATT version. Thats how things go... have a good day!

My service should have Auto-Refilled today. However, when I went to make a call, I found out my service was deactivated. I thought maybe Auto-Refill was disabled when I transferred to the new microSIM. Unfortunately, after spending another 45 minutes on the phone with customer service, I found out that they activated the replacement SIM that they sent me... the one that doesn't fit my phone and appears to be a Tmobile SIM. So, instead of just re-activating the microSIM that was working yesterday, they have to send me another one. I confirmed with them that they will be sending an AT&T compatible microSIM. We will see what I receive.
I recently switched from straight talk to verizon's own pre paid plan after being fed up with straight talk. When I first got the service active everything was fine. I flashed the CM11 AOSP rom snapshot. I then proceeded to try and update my roaming capabilities by dialing *228 which the automated system told me was successful and ever since then my phone will not stay on LTE. It will only goto 3G. If i try to force the lte only mode then my data will work but i wont be able to make calls. I have tried going into stock recovery and resetting factory to try and clear the NV and flashing both the kitkat and lollipop RUU to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You might have damaged your Sim card by dialing *228, well I don't know about damaged, but I know Verizon phones locked to their network that uses 4G LTE Sim cards are blocked from dialing *228 because of the reasons you described.

So maybe i need to go get a new sim card then. Thats what i figured hopefully i can get to the verizon store before work and grab one.
Hey,
Were you able to get it working again?
I have the same issue. I dialed *228 like an idiot and my phone activated on 3G and won't get anything else.
I've had Verizon reset the connection on their side and I went to the store and picked up a new SIM but I still can't get LTE. It's driving me crazy. I've tried restoring to a prior backup, factory resetting the phone. Nothing gets me LTE.
