Anyone on Verizon? - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

With Verizon on current 2.42.617.1, we receive several LTE Bands, which is good in most places with strong Verizon signal. S-0ff until next reboot has been achieved and there is TWRP recovery, root choices, and several custom roms available which make the U11 experience better.
Note if you unlock your device: so far no updates will relock an unlocked device or deny you the ability to stay unlocked.
This is a well-made and for the most part, now problem-free phone. Most of the earlier Verizon connection issues have been resolved.

So far only the Sprint version is out in the wild in the USA. The "unlocked" verizon - ATT, Verizon, Tmobile - is not out yet. Why not just get that one?

Yes, ordered it in first hours of availability: coming this afternoon via FedEx.
Ordered the 'unlocked' one alright.
But in the past I bought the Unlocked HTC/Google PixelXL, and Verizon shortly sent out software that would eliminate
the possibility of unlocking the bootloader - different from carrier unlocked.
I just don't want future bootloader unlock to get prohibited by putting in the Verizon sim. Once burned, now cautious...

Oh, man, this had better not be the case.
I will be returning it if this happens.
At least my LG G3 is unlocked and works the way I want it to.

Got mine already, unlocked model with verizon sim. It's true that this phone does not seem to have cdma radios. So you MUST have advanced calling turned on in order for this phone to work with a verizon sim. So if you aren't blanketed in 4glte service and relied on cdma for phone calls you are SOL. This phone only supports VoLTE for calls. Just an fyi/disclaimer in case cdma is important for you.

This is partially why I am waiting. So see how much others find this to be an issue & come here and talk about it. It seems to me it will be a BIG issue for me as I do find 3G and 1x at times when I travel remotely.
We have zero idea when VZW will be fully moving over and off the CDMA - it could be years and in the meantime, I feel like I need that ability personally.

Actually my Verizon business rep is being told that they need to phase out 3g phones over the next two years. They aren't even allowed to sell 3g only phones anymore, that's why advanced calling is on by default now on new devices. They expect to start re-purposing those 3g towers by 2020, maybe sooner, who knows.

I ordered the "Verizon" U11 (which is actually just the unlocked version). Just got it, opened the box and booted up, went through the HTCdev Unlocking process successfully. Popped in my VZW already activated SIM card and got the message: "Would you like to install settings and apps from your carrier? Existing settings will be replaced." Choices are to install now or later so I said later. Gave it time then rebooted and chose to install the Settings/Apps. Looks like it added some VZ Bloat and also modified some network/call settings, but nothing else.

@WorldOfJohnboy - Interesting. I got none of that when I put my Verizon SIM in my unlocked U11. It works making phone calls, texts, etc., but no WiFi Calling, no Visual Voicemail, no Caller ID, no HD Voice. Only VOLTE is offered. Didn't ask me to install settings or apps. Wonder if I should do a wipe and set up from scratch, because I'd actually like those things to work.

@WorldOfJohnboy can you use Titanium Backup or other method to freeze/remove VZW apps?
Did you have or do you now have Mobile Hotspot enabled?

Strange things are afoot the circle k...
I was actually shocked as well.

Can anyone on Verizon make a few screenshots?
1. Settings > More > Cellular networks
2. Settings > More > Cellular networks > Preferred network type
3. Phone (the dialer app) > Settings > Calls
4. *#*#4636#*#* > Phone information
These screenshots would clarify which features are available on Verizon.

These options did not work for me. The menus are different than your directions.
There's no CDMA. No GSM options. Only voice over LTE.
Option number four didn't work for me at all.
I only received my u11 last night. Calling is good in my LTE Zone. No Wi-Fi calling options available. This is after I allowed Verizon to install its apps and settings. I don't believe that there were any changes to the menu. I didn't see Wi-Fi calling at all.
The phone is absolutely beautiful but it is slippery and looks fragile as hell. Even in the included plastic clear case I question its resiliency.
However, this is the first Verizon phone I've had where mobile hotspot worked out of the box! Usually I have to unlock root and ROM for that.

Okay, sorry, I just assumed it would be the same as the stock Android 7. It's strange that #4 doesn't work though.
Could you try to find screens similar to #1 and #2 in the settings menu? It should say something about cellular/network. #3 might not be there at all if HTC is using their own dialer app. I've attached examples how it should look.

Sorry, but screenshotting and uploading are too difficult for me at the moment.
None of those options exist for Verizon. LTE is the _only_ option for calling. No voice over WiFi, No CDMA.
There are some GSM-only options, but they don't come up in my phone. Selecting them goes to a forever-waiting "Reading settings..."
Apparently you can use SIP calling for Internet calls.
Hope this helps. I need to get on the unlock process and ROM installation before I decide whether I keep it.

Is There a CDMA On/Off Setting?

With GSM it's easy - you take out your SIM card, and you are off that SIM's network.
Presumably the Nexus 5 will work for voice and 3G without the SIM card. Is there some way to turn off CDMA (yes, I know that if there is no SIM I can just turn off all cellular data. But that's not my question.)
If you mean temporarily, you can always do the old standby of airplane mode. Enable airplane mode, then enable whatever wireless services you want (Wifi, Bluetooth). The airplane mode will keep the cellular modem completely off.

Now that the phone has been out in the wild for a while does anyone know the answer to this question?
The N5 does not allow voice or 3g without a sim for some reason. Perhaps someone will figure out a way to bypass this check at some point.
You can also pick and choose between gsm only, cdma only, lte only etc no problem.

So if you take out the SIM, and you are on Sprint, you can't make phone calls or use 3G data?
I know the Sprint LTE Iphones will work if the SIM is removed, just without LTE.
Maybe that's just a way of keeping things clear to the user - your phone has the identity of whatever SIM you have in at any given time.

I don't think it is compatible with any other CDMA only provider - certainly not with Verizon. Who else is there? Metro is going GSM/LTE.
Or perhaps the SIM is necessary to pick the CDMA provider - most CDMA phones are carreir specific, and they just default to the carrier associated with the phone. In other words, if you turn on an unactivated Sprint or Verizon phone, it automatically goes to the correct carrier. If the Nexus 5 has access to more than one CDMA carrier, perhaps the SIM is the method of selecting the carrier.

PagePlus is one who runs on Verizon and allows any phone. No LTE tho with them.
Also, The carrier on most CDMA phone is determined by the PRL file. This tells the phone which towers to communicate with and it can be changed.

Presumably then the PRL is preloaded on the Nexus 5 - hence it knows to look for Sprint.
I believe Page Plus as a Verizon MVNO and will only activate Verizon phones, or their own (Page Plus) phones.

They will activate any CDM phone for a except few exceptions such as if the phone is ESN banned on Verizon, PrePaid Verizon phones, Verizon iphones and Verizon blackberry devices. It's a well known unofficial policy.

Due to hearing that problem I might look at a S4 or something. I generally like the build quality of Samsung much better than LG.

Interesting, but doesn't really make sense that 3G data is unavailable. If you put a GSM LTE SIM in and select CDMA only, will it make calls on Sprint? (Don't mean to tell you what to do, but I think it would be an interesting thing to find out if you were so inclined.)

I guess I really don't understand how CDMA works. With GSM, if the phone is unlocked, it works on any network. CDMA always seems to involve flashing. Although I believe there is so me sort of lock on CDMA phones as well (after all, MSL = Master Subsidy Lock.) I wonder if the CDMA side of the phone is locked to Sprint (we know from other posts there is an MSL code for these phones.)

In my experience, none of the *#*#xxxxx#*#* codes work without the SIM inserted. You might even need to be activated on Sprint at the time.
Just to clarify, CDMA in this thread includes WCDMA(3g) too?
So the phone will either go GSM or LTE only, which 3g or HSDPA/HSPA are not available by options?

Xfinity Mobile

Hello all, I just activated my Samsung S8+ on Xfinity Mobile this past Tuesday and I still have not received the May security update. I was wondering if anyone read anything about how they are going to push the monthly updates? I have been searching Google but of course because it is so new there is a lack of information.
It hasn't been released yet.

So you can use data while on a call WITHOUT WiFi being on? Mine shows 3G all the time with WiFi off. I was thinking it was a SIM compatibility issue between the LG X Power and S8+. My SIM from my Note5 wouldn't work in my S8+ on Sprint. Had to have a different one.

It's set to global. I have trouble getting LTE period. I can use Rom Control and force to LTE and web is OK. No calls though. Toggle is missing. Same thing, I can enable VoLTE with Rom Control and can see the toggle. NO voice calls though. Says out of service area. Maybe it's because the LG X Power doesn't support VoLTE and the account isn't provisioned for it. I put the SIM card back in the X Power and I can't get 4G on there now. A tier 2 tech was poking around my account yesterday. Don't know what he did. He hung up on my. LOL

APN settings appear correct. Compared that with the LG. My LG has a username and password though. I take them out and I have no data at all. The S8+ has data with the settings like yours. I can edit the APN settings on the LG where as they are locked on the S8+. Weird since this is an unlocked U1 phone. Had to flash the Xfinity firmware to get text to work though. Hopefully that didn't lock the device to Xfinity. The tier 2 tech wanted the IMEI from there S8+. I gave it to him and he said that was for the LG X Power. I had the S8+ box in front of me and even pulled it from the phone. Still said that it belonged to the LG. Then he hung up on me. Not a word since.

Hmmm, maybe he did you a favor actually.
I just flashed the U1 firmware to my Xfinity device and all the APN stuff is editable. Phone shows as a U1 model too. Everything is working great. I found everytjing in thr AT&T section of S8+.
Can you flash back to U1 firmware, pop the X mobile sim in (get the device all set up first before putting SIM in) and then do a manual search on service provider section of mobile connections? The tech may have locked that SIM to IMEI, but that's a good thing if you are wanting to use that SIM on S8, right?
Go in to network operators and pick top option (search networks) and let it search for a while. Then you should have a list like my second attachment. Oh and don't mind my lack of cell signal lol, I was jacking around with all of the editable options available now.
Be sure and set Bearer to Unspecified (with nothing else selected). Save before exiting. Added third pic to show I am on LTE+ on U1 firmware with X mobile SIM, but this SIM was always tied to this IMEI as it is Xfinity Purchased phone.

Did you ever get this going? I never did get 4G going on my LG X Power. The only way I could get it to work was to select LTE/GSM under mobile networks. Of course calls wouldn't work then. Exchanged them for the LG X Charge which supports VoLTE. I still can't get 4G. They said to use my old sim cards. I think I have a provisioning issue. Still waiting on tier 2 to call.

WiFi Calling on Factory Unlocked S8+

A couple of weeks back, I purchased a factory unlocked S8+ Model #G955U1, Baseband Version G955U1EU1AQE3 (The AT&T Galaxy S8+ has different Model and Build #s), inserted my AT&T SIM card and have been using it since. Then I decided to activate WiFi calling, however, unlike my wife's iPhone 7, my Galaxy does not have the option to enable WiFi calling (this option should be under Settings>Connections). After some research, I found out that this a carrier feature which AT&T must provision. When I asked them to do it, they provisioned it on my wife's iPhone 7 but not on my Galaxy, so I called them again and asked them to provision it on the Galaxy. Although they insist that they did, the feature does not show up on under AT&T Devices (It shows up under the iPhone but not the Galaxy). After spending no less than two hours speaking to three agents, I learned that AT&T does not have in their data base the IMEI number of the Galaxy because it was not purchased through them. So obviously, not having an IMEI number, the WiFi calling feature is not going to be pushed to my Galaxy. Not being able to solve the problem, they escalated it to another level who is supposed to contact me two days from now. A friend purchased his Galaxy S8+ through AT&T and the WiFi calling option is there in Settings>Connection and he is able to toggle it on or off. When I used AT&T's IMEI Verification tool, the result was "Device is compatible but we cannot find matching SIM card".
Any and all input would be appreciated.
Same here. Looks like wifi calling is not a feature that is available on the unlocked version unfortunately. Same with using LTE while on calls and built in visual voicemail :/
You have some advantages going unlocked but you lose some things too.

True, just keep in mind that future att updates can't be done via OTA - which can be a pain too.

With the unlocked s8+ i've found that wifi calling and volte only worked on T-Mobile, I tried it with T-Mo and verizon. It stinks that ATT cant be more like T-Mo with accepting non branded devices

I am pleasantly surprised and a bit puzzled because when I spoke to T-Mobile Tech yesterday, she could not confirm if WiFi calling will work on unlocked S8+. If I can be assured that it will work, I will switch to T-Mobile.
Please do me a great favor and check if your unlocked S8+ has the same Model and Build Numbers as mine. Here are my numbers:
Model #G955U1
SM-G955UZKAXAA
Baseband Version G955U1EU1AQE3
Thank you.

All the information you provided matched with my phone. As a matter of fact, I also tried my friends SIM who is on MVNO called Mint Mobile that runs on T-mobile network. Mint also allowed me to make wi-fi calling. I am surprised that t-mobile rep could not confirm this feature because this feature is on by default! If I don't want to make wifi calls, I have to turn it off. The only little annoying part is that you get constant notification," Calls will be made over WiFi". Even when you block this notification, it will reappear on the reboot

Thank you indeed for your response. When I got my S8+ and before inserting AT&T SIM, this feature was NOT listed under Settings>Connections. I was informed by a Samsung agent that the carriers will push this feature to the phone through their SIM after they provision the feature. So now since my SIM is AT&T and my phone is unlocked, and its IMEI number is not in AT&T's data base, I don't have the feature listed.
Unfortunately, I can't comment on at&t network. On t-mobile, I did not have to do anything except during the initial setup, I was asked if I was ok to make wifi phone calls when a wifi connection was available & the signal was strong. I still have the option not to use this feature. You may wantvto visit a t-mobile store or find a friend who is on t-mobile network. It might not be a bad idea to reset the phone (after backing up) when you get the new sim card. Good luck ?

I switched yesterday from AT&T to T-Mobile and immediately the wifi calling showed up in Phone Settings as you mentioned. However before switching from AT&T to T-Mobile, wifi calling was not anywhere to be found.

That's because WiFi calling and VoLTE are not available on ATT using the US Unlocked device. You have to either buy an ATT carrier version, or flash the ATT firmware to your current device.
Try to reset to factory defaults with sim inside
I'm on Argentina and with unlocked software i got wifi calling when the device is set up with my sim inside

I found that after wasting several hours with AT&T's techs. The 3rd option is to dump AT&T and switch to a carrier that has wifi calling available for unlocked S8/S8+ phones such as T-Mobile.
Wi-Fi Calling works great for me
TheBoozer said:

Essential PH-1 on AT&T postpaid

If you are not on AT&T postpaid plans, then please refrain from posting. I had enough research that Sprint and T-Mobile are working fine with the phone with all the advanced connectivity options.
AT&T currently has a crappy insincere BYOD policy even though they said they welcome your device. Here's the link from AT&T website about the Essential PH-1.
https://www.att.com/plans/essential-phone.html
In reality, the Essential PH-1 on AT&T will be restricted to HSPA/UMTS for voice and LTE for data. Advanced connectivity options such as HD Voice, VoLTE and WiFi calling do not work on Essential PH-1. Looking around, the same frustrations do apply for others with unbranded phones from Google and OnePlus.
How does this differ from prepaid? I'm getting LTE+ and WiFi calling. Not getting Volte though. Would it say Volte up top of it's active during a call? I get HSPA during calls.

I don't think AT&T prepaid has any of the advanced connectivity options. How do you know WiFi calling is working for you? Having the option showed up in Settings->Wireless & Network does not imply it is working. Mine has the option, too, but placing or receiving calls still drop down to HSPA/UMTS. You can check what kind of network you used on placing/receiving calls by going into *#*#4636#*#* menu.
Mine stays on LTE during calls. You have to call them and give them your IMEI and let them provision it and then reboot your phone. Did it today, works great. Never tried prepaid, standard unlimited data family plan here.

I did.
When I got my Essential PH-1 from BestBuy, I even called up AT&T rep to get a new SIM card for the phone. I provided the phone make/model and IMEI to them, since my old SIM card from OnePlus X back in 2015 was not getting these advanced connectivity options. Essential tech support recommended that I obtained a new SIM card from AT&T. I am surprised that you were able to get this done over the phone with AT&T tech support without having a case opened and wait for another 9~11 business days.
My case is currently opened and expected to be resolved by 11/30/2017. I had threatened to move to T-Mobile if they did not escalate the resolution. Researching further, I have less hope that Essential PH-1 will be fully supported by AT&T BYOD in all the advanced connectivity options. And, I am not alone with such frustrations.

I am really after VoLTE, WiFi calling and HD Voice are nice to have. Essential PH-1 LTE HSPA/UMTS indoor reception seems to be poor compared to OnePlusX from where I live.
It all works fine here. Just had to provide the IMEI for them over the phone and reboot my PH-1 after. Getting all of these features on mine, no problem.
If you register the PH-1 IMEI to the SIM you will not get VoLTE on AT&T as it is not an AT&T carrier branded phone. AT&T reserves those features for their phones.
To get around that, register an IMEI from an AT&T carrier branded phone to the SIM. Then you will get VoLTE. Unfortunately WiFi calling does not work even though the option is available on the PH-1.
My SIM is registered with my old AT&T S8 IMEI. I'm still on LTE during a call and also get HD icon on the call screen for HD Voice call also.
Quick and easy test would be to take a friend's AT&T SIM and plug it in to verify VoLTE.

I never thought of that. Yeah, maybe the difference is that a lot of us had a SIM from a previous AT&T branded phone that we just tossed in here, so when we gave them our IMEI it all just worked.
If I had to ask them for a new SIM and told them it was for this phone, maybe it wouldn't?

Strange though. In my case I've never had an AT&T branded phone with this SIM and it all still works since getting them my IMEI. Every phone I've used has been bought outright from the given manufacturer.

AT&T just closed my case with a disappointing response.
------ AT&T response ------
Regrettably, we do not support HD Voice/Wi-Fi Calling on non-AT&T Branded devices. As the device in use on the line is an unlocked non-AT&T branded device, we are unable to support those services on the device. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Thank you for choosing AT&T. We truly value and appreciate your business. If you have any further inquiries, please contact Customer Care at 1-800-331-0500 for assistance.

So for those of you who claimed VoLTE/Wi-Fi calling/HD Voice work on Essential PH-1, I would seriously doubt the validity of such claims. AT&T system is smart enough now to detect IMEI mismatch if you reuse existing SIM on AT&T branded phone. AT&T periodical system audits may disable such advanced connectivity options once it is flagged by the system.

I know for a fact that I have HD voice. The dialer shows HD on some calls and doesn't on the others. When it doesn't, there is a sound quality difference.
The SIM that I'm using came from an AT&T branded HTC M8 which i l used on an M9 and then the 10... Now it's in the PH-1

Thanks where did you buy it?

Any idea how to change our find apn for Verizon?
This phone is GSM only. That might be part of the issue with Verizon. To set the APN you go to settings>Sim cards and mobile network>click on the Sim card>Access Point Names.

Are you on t mobile? Some of my other xiaomi's phones have it enabled but it still drops to 3g during calls. But another different xiaomi with the same sim will also have it working so I've been confused whether it's carrier or device dependant
I'm on Mint Sim. I did make a few calls and discovered a few things. If you enter the above code it then shows the VoLTE option under the sim card. If I toggle it on, phone calls don't go through. Toggle off they do. I observed when making a phone call that the mobile signal says 4g rather than LTE during the call. If I use *#*#4636#*#* to go to the info screen it says the voice network type is LTE. Lower on the screen it says that VoLTE provisioned is off. If I toggle mobile radio power off then on the LTE provisioned will then go to On. If I try to make a call the connection resets (network drops for like a minute) and the LTE provisioned toggle goes back to off once the network comes back up.

I'm on Mint Mobile too. I've been trying to find any info I can to enable WiFi Calling, as Band 2/4/5 coverage in my area is weak, and the only strong signal we have at our home is Band 12 which this phone doesn't support, unfortunately.
A few observations:
I disabled both the VoLTE carrier check (*#*#86583#*#*) and the VoWiFi carrier check (*#*#869434#*#*) and enabled both toggles within the SIM card settings page with no luck.
I also saw the settings you mentioned on the hidden info/settings screen ( *#*#4636#*#*) and, similarly to what you said, any options I modify simply revert back. IMS Status is also indicated as "Not Registered" in the more tab at the bottom, and I'm not sure if this is directly related to these features not working. I can't seem to register my SIM Card with the Xiaomi SIM Activation Service either (it requires an international text or something). When I attempt to do so, I just receive a "Can't activate SIM card; Server error occurred while requesting an activation SMS." message. I linked my number with my MI Account on the website, but I still am getting that error, so I'm not sure what's going on there.
Lastly, if I change my phone's WiFi Calling option to WiFi Only (via another secret menu that I accessed with an app literally called "WiFi Calling" lol) it can't make any outgoing calls at all. It can only function with a mobile connection available. If anyone has any info to share on the possibility of enabling WiFi Calling on this phone in the US, or has had experience with configuring other stingy Xiaomi phones, that would be greatly appreciated.
I know in the mint app there's a toggle to turn on wifi calling which is off by default. Did you turn that on?

Oh, yes. I have. At this point I may just have to purchase a cell signal booster for our home, but VoWiFi would definitely be the best case scenario.
Changing regions
Anyone know if you could do factory reset and select a different region that would put you on different bands for Verizon allowing me to get service here in the US? Just checking if anyone's tried that ?

I'm on t mobile and have a few different budget phones from xiaomi and none of them stay on lte during calls for some reason even though I have the volte toggle enabled after dialing the code. Only one of my xiaomi phones which is a more expensive kind will have volte working by default with the same sim card. Not sure what the differences are between them but the budget phones are volte capable for other users just with a different service. Weird because if it's carrier related and my same sim isn't working then something else isn't right. Volte will be an important requirement in the US starting in 2021 because of the 3g shutdown right?
There is a pc tool to modify the modem and also a different one for band unlocking but not too sure how reliable they are. People did have success with it though check out this thread here

It's a different xiaomi phone but I think the method could be similar. On the last page, someone on t mobile said they were able to get volte and rcs working after some changes. Not sure about wifi calling though. I might try this myself soon though I'm not too advanced with it. It should be fine if an old budget phone is used for testing. Seems to be one of the most useful info I've found after some digging around

The only Verizon bands this phone supports are the 4G bands 2, 4, and 5. No 2G or 3G. It's tailored more so for GSM carriers and Verizon is a CDMA carrier. I don't see how factory resetting or changing the region would affect the bands as that has more to do with the internal modem and antennae than it does the software. But I could very well be mistaken. Awhile back I know there was a weird method to "unlock all bands" if your phone had a Qualcomm chip in it, so phone tech and their carriers can admittedly be a bit of an enigma to me lol. Regardless, I'd advise against getting this phone if you're on Verizon.

Thanks a ton for this info! My dad has a Redmi Note 7 so I might try this out for both of us and see what kind of results I can get.
I stumbled across this icon today, to my surprise. I had followed the steps to modify the modem in the phone, but could not really find an adequate profile among the options to enable for T-Mobile/Mint in the US. I mostly work from home where my cell signal isn't the greatest, so I didn't even see it until a couple days after the modifications.
I'm not entirely sure if it's the modifications to the modem that caused the icon to appear, or simply enabling it via the dialer code but I was surprised to see it, nonetheless.
I tried making a few calls with it, but it seems to disappear when I get into an actual phone call, and unfortunately I have no news on the VoWiFi front.
