Hi all,
It's a question that's probably been asked before, but the search yields too any results to find the answer!
What I need to know is whether unlocking the HD2 will officially void its warranty? I can get a new boxed HD2 for £370 delivered from my provider, or even cheaper on fleabay if I look for locked handsets.
Is the process easily reversable? I really can't afford to have HTC say no to repair should anything happen to the device!
Also, if I buy used on ebay, is the warranty based on the serial/IMEI of the handset, i.e. I will definitely have (just under) 24 months of dedicated HTC repair?
Thanks fellow HTC lovers!
I'd like to know this myself
I too have the option of buying directly from my network which adds a bit more comfort than buying from ebay! But if I'm saying goodbye to the warranty then it's a big risk......
I think it voids the warranty. Reversal is usually as easy as unlocking it.

Sim unlocking your phone does not void the warranty, but cid unlock does.
The difference in buying a unlocked phone or a carrier locked phone is the Sim.
If you buy a phone on ebay, the HTC warranty will only be for the remainder of the 1 year warranty that starts when the serial # is registered to a network upon activation of the phone, unless the seller is a commercial operation providing their own warranty.
^Correct...CID unlocking will void the warranty!
Many thanks for the advice above!
I decided to go for an factory unlocked (sim free) HD2 that I managed to pick up for a (well, kinda...) reasonable price, or as reasonable as prices for these things go!
Though I haven't even got it yet - I'm already looking into the different cooked roms available, despite knowing that by many accounts the official HTC WWE rom will be stable and work well for most stuff.
I see the hackers here have developed two ways of flashing custom stuff to the HD2 - via HardSPL (allows you to flash anything) and via SSPL (which from what I can gather only allows you to flash the rom/OS, nothing else)
I've always flashed HardSPL to my older HTC devices as I've got them used without any warranty and therefore know that if anything goes wrong it's down to me (or xda's advice) to fix.
HSPL obviously makes things a lot easier to recover from and gives peace of mind, but will in this case mean voiding my warranty with HTC as it's permanent?
If I flash for example Artemis 5.0 via SSPL I assume it's reversible with a simple flash of an official HTC ROM, will flashing using it void the warranty at all?
Though I'd love to flash HSPL and just get down to business, voiding the warranty so early on on a device as expensive as this isn't really a risk I'm willing to take (just yet). I know the easiest thing for me to do would be to just ignore any custom stuff and look the other way, but it's not in my nature to do so!
Many thanks again for the advice, I see this thread has managed to make its way to the top of the Google results page for related queries, so hopefully this will help quite a few people out.
Bump!
I'm pretty sure you can undo HardSpl if you need to send your phone for warranty issues. Though this might only be a little difficult if your display is broken for example.
Okay folks, I figured I could either hang back and wait for a root / Cyanogenmod ROM for the DoubleShot and cross my fingers, or I could put my money where my mouth is.
I've got $25 (via PayPal) waiting for the first person to sort me out with a way to get permanent root status on my S-ON doubleshot, and another $25 for the first Cyanogenmod ROM I can download with a better pixel density and none of the T-Mobile crap. I also offer myself as a beta tester.
$25 for so much work isn't very much, but if we can get some more folks to pledge some cash, then there could be a nice wee incentive for devs to get this thing rolling nice and fast.
Anybody else?
EDIT: $150 pledged already! This is great! Keep it coming! Our beloved devs work hard so that we can have the best and most awesome phones; let's sweeten the deal for them.
If you want some guarantee that I'm gonna stick my fifty in ($25 for S-Off and another $25 for the first CyanogenMod ROM that works), well, I've got six thousand players on improbableisland.com who'll be extremely disillusioned if their admin caveman didn't hold up to a promise.
EDIT EDIT: Root Achieved! Donate here:

For reference, I rounded up to eighteen Euros, which works out to $26.29 as of the time of this edit.

S-OFF (and consequently root) is in the works. I'll let you know when I have more info.
I'm sure AlphaRev and unrevoked can use their exploit to S-off the myTouch Slide 4G.

Yes and no. Again, I'll let you know when I have more.
Keep us posted with updates. S-On, the locked bootloader, and no root are what's keeping me from buying this device.

The appropriate parties are working various attack vectors and we're hoping to have something to show for it soon.
I'm in for $25...

With the perma-temp root, you can do root. You just have to re-run a script after a reboot... not ideal, but at least we can do root stuff while we wait.

I'd be in for $25 as well, but I'm not sure if the group doing the exploit have a way to receive these funds as a collective. I'll investigate that later today.
EDIT: nevermind. They do. Lets see who else we can get together for a fund! $75 so far.
I'm in for $25 too, the MT4GS needs S-OFF and Root like Pearl Harbor needed a better plot (and that's an awful lot).
New total = $100

I'm in for $25. Diddnt care about S-OFF or Root on my G2, but **** all this bloatware on the MT4GS.

I'd be in but only for an exploit that doesn't involve 18000 steps, scripting and downloading tons of large installs. Why can't be as easy to root as my A500!?!?!?!

If you've owned a G1, you'd know that various root processes that involve that many steps ARE streamlined (the root process, A2SD, DeathSPL, CyanogenMod after 4.1.11.1, etc. involved over 9000 steps that weren't feasible on a Windows machine).

Not really. Lets just say I'm "consulting" for them for our device. I have direct contacts though.
since the MT4GS is so closely related to the E3D and the Sensation, shouldn't this be a piece of cake?? I've never done any work on exploits, so I'm not sure exactly what goes into it. just curious.. with $125 on the table I'm tempted to dig into it myself.

Yes, it is similar hence the hope that it can be accomplished. The notable difference is that the Evo 3D ("Shooter") is HBOOT 1.40 and ours' is HBOOT 1.44. The Sensation (Pyramid) is even older than Shooter. Point being? We have a newer HBOOT, so things may take more time, plus I'm not sure if the appropriate party received my message that there's $125 on the line.

Good luck. Unrevoked went to a lot of work to prevent reverse engineering and now that AlphaRev and Unrevoked are a team ('Revolutionary'), the Pyramid and Shooter S-OFF release is likely just as closed as Unrevoked releases.

yes, I see that digging into the pyramid release. oh well. I respect that it's their work and I'm not about to waste hours upon hours of my time trying to figure that mess out.
I contacted HTC requesting help (considering they're finally starting to get the ball rolling on unlocking bootloaders), but I'm not really holding out much hope there.
did you let the team know that the MT4GS guys have put $150 (I'm adding $25 to the fund as well) on the table for the first team/person to get the doubleshot s-off'd?
I purchased an HTC Sensation from someone on eBay about a month and a half ago. It works great, but I'm having issues with dust under the glass on the screen. I contacted HTC and they checked on the phone, it is still under warranty. The tech at HTC told me that there would be a fairly hefty (over $100) charge if there was other than original software on the phone. I contacted the seller to ask if everything was original and he confessed that the phone is s-off and rooted. I was not told this at the time of purchase, nor did I know to ask, so I guess I'm the dumb one.
I'm at a loss. I really don't know what that all means. I don't want to do anything to ruin my phone, but I'd like to get the dust problem fixed. It's very annoying and very obvious.
I've looked on the forums here and have read posts about this, but I am far from tech savvy and it's like reading a foreign language. All I can think is that I'll ruin my phone if I try anything and then I'll be out the $400 that I paid for it. Is it even possible to get the phone back to what it was originally if I don't know what was exactly done to it by the other owner? Also, is it going to ruin my phone to have this software on it?
I'd appreciate any help or advice that you can give.
Thank you!

you can flash the stock tmobile rom and then s-on again for warranty returns/services. You can look here for a little more info but if you're not comfortable with the process i wouldn't suggest it.
[Q] exchanging phone @ AT&T hoping to get one without 1.85; any experience with this?
Like an idiot I jumped the gun and updated to 1.85 without changing CID. I went to the store and they obviously didn't have any in stock but they would call me as soon as they got a shipment in/acquired one from another store even if it is past my 30 days.
Does anyone have any recent experience with this? Does it have an earlier version? Or will I be stuck with another 1.85 device?
1.85 hasn't been released... can't see how you'd end up with one.
So you know the risks of using a leaked ruu. Why not just wait for root for 1.85 or a official update ruu?
Nothing is wrong with your device
Why would you need to return it? If being on 1.85 is the only issue, why not wait it out? I can't see why this is a problem that would require an exchange...
If you are not experiencing any problems other than being on 1.85 I would suggest u keep the phone. There is a very good possibility you could end up with a phone that has issues like the one I have and several others have had. Not only that but u flashed it to your phone so why make the carrier pay for something u did.

I'm stuck on 1.85 also. The phone runs fine and I can wait for the root.
I'm just curious, what were you going to tell them to convince them to exchange your phone with 1.85 for a stock phone?
Mike
I just took mine to the AT&T store half an hour ago. Since it was finally released from customs they said it should be in stock this week. They let me hold onto the phone and said even if I have to keep it past the 30 days they'll replace it anyway. They said there's a possibility of it being in stock tomorrow, so if I replace it then, I'll let you know.
I swear this forum needs to take a harder stance on threads like these. Suggesting that you're taking the phone back for exchange because you knowingly flashed a software version that is not carrier supported is shameful. These threads should be treated like Warez posts and deleted or locked.
Come on people, these things cost money! HTC and AT&T may make a lot of money, but every time someone does something like this it cuts into their bottom line and you're just driving up costs for the rest of us.

Your ad hominem attack doesn't do anything to make my point less valid. There is a difference between AT&T locking out things like data tethering (which is stupid) and HTC voiding warranties for bootloader unlocking, which is their prerogative. As an electronics manufacturer who incurs cost every time they accept a warranty return, it makes perfect sense to have a system which allows them to track who has unlocked the bootloader.
As a community of modders, I like to think that we all can accept that we are taking the warranty into our own hands when we modify the device in ways it was not intended to be used.

I've been trying for a couple weeks to get mine swapped, both because of 1.85 and because of connection problems.. I just called a store and they said to call tomorrow (31st day since purchase) to see if they have any, and that they would be willing to work with the circumstances... But if you are swapping for no other issue I'm not sure how they'll like that.

I got my Padfone yesterday which means - if everything is going well - I am going to sell my One S in the next few weeks.
The funny thing is, I have never sold a used (smart)phone before.
Currently, I have an unlocked bootloader, installed a custom recovery and a custom ROM.
My question is, how do guys sell your used smartphones? Just as they are? Or do you go back to stock? Do you relock the bootloader?
well if you sell it online, You can state that its running custom firmware, But can be changed to whatever the buyer prefers.
Or if you sell it to your carrier (most carriers have buy back option) you will need to revert it to stock.
Also check XDA marketplace, You will get lots of interest there, and because people on XDA know what its all about, they wont offer you stupid amounts and try to rip you off !

That is up to the buyer, some buyers don't care and others might actually prefer rooted phones. Then there are others who might not buy it, thinking that a rooted phone is flawed.
I sell my phones on Craigslist (CL). Make sure that you NEVER ship out a phone! EVER! They are all scams. Ask the person to meet up with you in person and ask them for cash ONLY!
Also, people will always try to low ball you, just make sure you are selling for a similar price as other One S on CL in your area and you will be fine.
eBay is another alternative, if people are selling phones on eBay for more than your area, then you might want to try eBay, but eBay takes a cut (about 11-13%). If after eBay cut, you find that you will still sell your phone for higher on eBay than CL, then go for eBay. If you have your own price, try to add a Buy it Now or Best Offer. Auctions are more risky as you might end up selling your phones for cheaper than you expected.
P.S. Congrats on the padphone :good:
I am planning to sell it on ebay.
The question is rather if I should take it back to stock completely or sell it as it is.

I think if you take it back to stock you'll have a bigger potential customer base.
Majority of the peoples don't understand "root" and custom ROM.
I do see it all the time peoples posting for sell with custom ROM.
You could also note if anyone want it stock you can revert it before shipping.
I sold my Samsung Captivate a while back, listed it as rooted.
I sold it but the buyer ask me to take it back to stock.
His reasoning, he would root it but want to learn the process of doing it himself.
+1 on Craigslist.
It is local and safe if a cash only sale. I sold my Blackberries and my Nexus One (different times) the same day I posted add. No surprises. Left the N1 rooted and just Factory Reset to clear personal data. Had buyers meet me at common public place.
Ken
just don't mention that it is rooted. If the buyer wins the auction, ask him/her if they need it to be rooted. If they say no, just unroot it and send it.
rooted could be an advantage. the guy i sold to was heavy into flashing
