Galaxy S8+ Slow fast charging - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Sup guys, just got my new Galaxy S8+ out of the box. I've noticed that my device charges a bit slower than usual. I'm using the stock fast charger that came out of the box and wireless charging IS TURNED ON but it takes me about 1 hour and 40 minutes or more to charge it from 0% to 100%. In comparison to my friends S7 edge which has a bigger battery, his phone charges about 20 minutes quicker than mines and his is practically brand new. I would still be charging at 50% and his S7 edge would be at 65% which is a big difference when it comes to most situations. Normally before I leave the house I charge my device and at this rate, this is pretty slow for me. Anyone know any possible fixes? I did the low battery dump method already but I might try to reset the phone if nothing else works. AGAIN I'm using the original charger that came out of the box.
My charging time from 0-100% is about 1 hour and 50 minutes for my S8+
My friends charging time from 0-100% is about 1 hour and 25 minutes for his S7 Edge

There has been some discussion about this elsewhere on the internet. It would seem that Samsung have limited the charging rates slightly on the s8, in addition to being conservative with the battery size and leaving empty space around it so that it can expand freely when hot. All measures completely understandable given what happened with the Note 7. It's slightly annoying that they went to these extremes but they could not take even the slightest risk of a disaster like that occurring again. It would have been the end of their smart phone division.

How is the real charging speed?

One reasons that I am considering the Note PRO 12.2 is the possible faster charging speed. If I watch videos and/or browse the web non-stop while charging the device, will it run out of power? I read that for the 10.1 2014, consumption of electric power is faster than charging. Thanks.

The charge speed is faster than the uncharge speed on the wifi model. You might wanna take a look at the lte model though if charge time is important to you because that model has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. The Snapdragon 800 has QuickCharge 2.0 on board. Depending on the adapter it should charge very fast.
In case of buying, I will buy the LTE version. Thanks.

When I got mine yesterday (wifi) it was at 55%. I plugged it in and started to set everything up, basically restoring from my google account, syncing corp mail, etc. It was fully loaded down with tasks. After an hour or so the battery fluctuated between 54%-56% the whole time. It wasn't until I let it go to sleep that it finally started really charging.
I can't give you metrics because I haven't measured them yet, but it definitely charges faster than it drains, so if you have it plugged in you won't take it to zero even under heavy load.
I did notice something strange however, I first tried charging it with the charger of my Note 2 phone (5v, 2A) and it charged until 90%, then got stuck there. Wouldn't go past 90%.
I then used the charger that came with the Note (visually identical to the Note 2 one) and it progressed to 100%. The difference is that the new one is 5.3v/2A. As far as I can see, the thing charges pretty fast even with the huge battery, but I'm already used to waiting a bit because of the Note 2 (3100 or 3200 mAh).
Using the stock charger with 3.2a adapter it charges slowly even with the screen on. With the screen off it charges fast - the screen is the main power draw.

I got mine last Friday and I only charged once . Came with 40%, used it down to 17% then let it charge for like 3 or 4 hours. It's charging about the same speed as Note 10.1 (SLOWLY). It's nice but haven't had that much time to fool around with it since Friday. It's freaking expensive and that's the thing I keep thinking about 750 (32g) + 60 for a 64g Samsung Msd card. Now I got to find a case and the only ones I seen so far are the one with the BT keyboard for 100 and a Samsung case for 69.00. None of the other cases online are in stock yet.. I been trying to wait but im afraid I will drop it
It only seems slightly faster then my 10.1 (CY 11) on it but I know for video its much sharper screen.
It charges faster than the Nexus 10 provided it has bigger battery. It took around 4 hours to charge to 100% starting with 20% remaining battery. My Nexus 10 needed at least 6 hours to charge full in that situation. However, on the other side I used the device to watch a 1080p video (around 90 minutes) with WiFi on and it reduced from 55% to around 25% which is I think too much.
My batt did good the first day now it seems like it is draining very fast. I am looking into what is making it do this. I can't wait for CWM and custom Roms

Observation. The quality of a charge

Hi there.
Over the past month i have made a few very interesting and surprising observations with my phone that led me to a couple of theories. I'd like to share these and get opinions as i cant find anything that proves or disproves them online but the implications are interesting if i'm correct.
The quality of a charge is just as important as quantity. Is this correct? If what ive observed is accurate, the quality of a charge not only effects charging time but how long that charge lasts out for. Ie how quickly the battery drains.
How did i come to this conclusion?
I've been using my faithful galaxy s4 for a good while now. When i first got this phone, it would charge fully in just over an hour from its bundled charging block and that charge would last all day with heavy use.
That was until last month.
The data cable partially broke. The part that jacks into the phone. The pins got worn and that connection decayed and became dodgy. The qualty of the connection dropped significantly. When connected to pc it would cut in and out if it was moved about and charging time via the charging block had increased from 1 hour to over 6 hours. I also noticed the battery drained from full charge significantly faster. I was reduced to charging 4 times a day for my normal use. I actually thought my battery was done at one point.
Then i ordered a new data cable from amazon. An official samsung galaxy s4 cable. That changed everything.
The phone whent back to taking 1 hour to charge from the charging block and its back to lasting a full day of heavy use from one single charge.
That really surprised me. Its rather interesting is it not that wear and tear of a data cable can effect not only charge time but how quickly that charge drains? I'm guessing here the poor connection drastically reduced not only the strength of charge but the quality of it as well. That would at least suggest that quality of the charge is just as important as quantity.
What do the gurus on here think of that one? Does that sound about right?

At work, I sometimes used a flaky USB cable to charge my old Huawei G330 with CM11.
I also noticed that sometimes afterwards, the battery lasted much shorter, because it lost around 5-10% per hour, even when not using the phone.
Turned out, the phone has a software bug in the USB-OTG area, that was triggered by the USB cable making bad contacts.
It caused a permanent wakelock, and the CPU couldn't go to sleep anymore until next reboot.

Charging speed

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the OnePlus 6T can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
dash charge (now called fast charge) is crazy fast!!
Still, I would only recommend using that feature if there is a real benefit - i.e. time is of the essence. The battery will age quicker being dash charged all the time.
saw 60 percent at 35 minutes and 38 seconds, which is more or less in line with what OnePlus claims
Incredibly fast compared to my old Honor 8. One example I have is the first charge I did 5 days ago when I had bought it at a pop-up event here in Sweden. I had used it for about 1-2 hours with the screen on when I was setting it up and trying out the phone. Then when I plugged it in, it went from 36% to 75% in just 24 minutes. That's insanely fast
I've also noticed that just like OnePlus claims, the phone basically charges at the same speed with the screen on as if I would have had the screen off.

Can you provide any factual basis for this statement? Research or articles from established professionals in the field of battery charging?
Everything I've read from reliable sources state that the biggest impact on battery longevity is temperature. Repeated heating (or extreme cooling for that matter) will accelerate the "aging" process, as you put it. OnePlus has actually solved this problem by offloading the energy conversion that causes heat to the power brick, leaving the phone cool during charging (pretty ingenious). I've also read that not always charging the battery fully to 100% can prolong longevity, which is why you get charging strategies on laptops that will stop charging at 80% or 60% if you leave your laptop plugged in 24/7.
Point being, the ONLY way to slowly charge this device would be to use a third party charger and/or cable.
The reason I ask this, is that the manufacturer, OnePlus, clearly states in their documentation that comes with the phone or dash chargers to ONLY use the charger and cable that came with the phone.
Please charge the OnePlus Dash device only with the official Dash Power Adapter and Dash Type-C Cable. Using unauthorized adapter can be dangerous and may void your warranty.

I'm not completely opposed to the idea that this could just be a marketing ploy to get you to buy their own adapter and accessories, but again just want to know if there's any substantial proof that fast charging, by itself, degrades the battery faster, of if it's just a case of incorrect tribal knowledge.
Thanks.
You are correct that the rate of charge and discharge alone are not the only deciding factors on lipo life and certainly not the most decisive ones.
Excessive heat, especially on high charge levels, is the biggest factor for increased aging.
As you mentioned extreme charging levels (completely empty or full) will also contribute to faster aging, albeit the impact is not that extreme for these low current-draw Lipos used in our phones (as opposed to high-drain Lipos for instance).
Discharge and Charge at high rates will also contribute to the speed of aging, but not as much as heat.
When a lipo spends most of its time one medium charging levels at moderate temperatures and is only charged and discharged with low rates on it will have the longest service life.
This is common for all Lipos, just how much a low or high rate is for that particular battery differs (low drain, high capacity VS high drain, low capacity cell)
With Lipos everything is a compromise. Max and min voltages, max temperatures, max draw are values the manufacturer has chosen as the best compromise to reach the intended MTBF. All these numbers are not physical absolute barriers.

First of all, how many device support Super VOOC? How many device you can buy outside China with VOOC?
Super VOOC is 50W, the same like Huaweis SuperCharge 2.
Did you test SuperCharge 2 or VOOC?
My OP6T charges up to 100% in 1hr 22mins, so I don't charge overnight anymore. Go to sleep on 40% and charge in the morning
The combo of battery life and crazy fast charging is for the first time breaking me of the "plug it in overnight" habit that I have had since my first cell phone over a decade ago. I can keep my charger at my desk, plug it in for half an hour, and be at 100% with almost no chance of running out before the next morning. That means fewer vampire chargers around the house wasting power, and fewer charge cycles lost leaving the phone plugged in long after it's full. I wish I had swapped to OnePlus sooner - I think I have finally found a phone maker to call my favorite.
The charging Speed with "Dash charge" is amazing.
Within few minutes the battery is from 0% to over 50%!
Generelly I can only say: Amazing battery life. The best I ever had with a phone (except Nokia 3310).
I started to charge when the battery was 5%. It took around 1 hour 20 mins. I can say this to be quite faster when compared to the devices I have used previously, that too when the size of the battery is much bigger than the previous phones.

The incredibly fast charging, coupled with the insane battery life (especially in dark mode) has made me totally OK with no wireless charging. I used to leave my phone on the charging pad at my desk most of the day, and on my nightstand charging pad overnight. I never had to worry about charging at all and plugged in maybe 20 times max over the last two years with my Note5. I said I'd never buy a phone without wireless charging, but the $350 or so I got for my Note5 exchange for this phone was just too tempting to overlook, particularly if it set up my family for the next two to three years (our current phones didn't have band 71 and Samsung said no more security updates). The only thing I was really worried about was wireless charging and whether or not the battery life and dash charging would be enough for me to overcome range anxiety.
It has.
So I'm thinking of keeping my dash charger at home ,and my 30w aukey charger at work ,I take it this will be ok to use ?

It should be. If you are starting from full in the morning I doubt you will even need the charger are work except for very rare instances. I have gotten 7 hours SOT that was mostly gaming on this thing, moderate use you can easily get 24 hours, light use around 48.

Confusing Fast Charging Issue

My S10e is like a week old now and I was charging using the fast charger and assumed everything is on track. When battery hits low like 10% and I put on charge, it says 1hr 30mins or so remaining until full but it's taking way more time that that. Today I noticed that my dad's S9 Plus charges way faster with the same S10e Fast Charges, I am confused and not able to understand why this is happening. If I am on 90% and I charge S10e it says 10-15 minutes to complete the charge and takes that much time approx, when I put S9 Plus on the same with 10%, says 3 minutes until full and finishes it in around 4mins. Why is this disparity?
Also, I did charge my S10e initially with the MacBook charges as I read it's safe but my phone never charged on time and heated the phone so I switched to Original charger. What can be done to fix my issue.
Thanks.

Not sure if it's any consolation, but same sort of scenario with my note 9 compared to the s10.
Edit. I use slow wired charging for both.

I had my phone wirelessly fast charging overnight (I know...), the phone was at 100% in the morning when my alarm went off, but once I took the phone off the wireless charger the phone powered off and was at 0% battery. Has happened twice. I now have wireless fast charging disabled.

Samsung Original Wireless Fast Charger Duo Pad 2.0

I have bought long time ago new version of fast charger duo pad. I use this charger to charge my SM-G977B S10 5g. I used this charger almost from s10 5g was released. It was charging battery from flat in about 1:35 every time when I was using this charger. From about 2 months I have noticed that charging is slower and it takes 2 hours to charge battery from flat. Maybe it's nothing important but the difference is especially noticeable at the beginning of charge process if I have only 10 - 20 minutes to charge it's really noticeable. I thought that I happened after certain update and firstly ignored that because of I wish to have only this type problems in my life. Anyway recently I have seen that if I use both pads and during charging my s10 5g I remove second device from pad s10 will switch to faster charging and I am able to achieve 1:35 charging time the same like before otherwise it charges a little bit over 2 hours. Is it software bug or problem whit my charger? Charger is quite expensive so I prefer to don't buy second one just for testing purpose. Have you noticed slower wireless charging yours s10 after one of recent update? What's the normal charging time for s10 5g on this charger? Thanks
Hi, is the same for me, I use it for about one year and at the beginning one charge (from 20% I never go under that or rarely) take approx 1h40 and it take 2h10 now ....
It's not an a really big problem for day to day use but sometimes it's annoying when you have less time for charge your smartphone.
But I need to say after one year this charger stay in a good condition especially in term of temperature management.
Anyone ?
Hi, an a factory reset solve my problem ?.
Before : 0,5%/H full charge in 3h20
After : 0,8% /H full charge in 2h20 (like at the beginning)
After the reset when put my phone ? on the wireless charger an notification appear "you can program the time when you went to stop the fast charging option to avoid noise and light during the night ? "
I never seen it before, I think ? the problem is that.
My 'fast charge' charger is as slow as the 6 times cheaper one I have had for more than a year, this means that a full charge takes about 3 hours. I bought it because I got a smartwatch and I didn't want to have two chargers on my desk.
I wiped the cache partition but the situation is the same. I followed other tips but nothing helped.
I did not do a phone reset because it takes me a long time to return to the normal state of the phone with passwords and other things and settings.
It is very annoying that samsung does not mention such a situation, as well as the fact that the estimation of the charge is far from the actual charge ... stupid is the one who buys this charger !!!
