do I need unlocked bootloader to flash an FTF file? - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

I have a HK version xperia XZ dual and the updates are really slow (see xpericheck.com)
If I want to flash a FTF version from a different region:
- can I?
- will I need root or an unlocked bootloader?
(and it will probably wipe my device right?)

Yes you can
No you do not need an unlocked bootloader

It will not wipe your phone. To flash ftf you have to use flashtool (http://www.flashtool.net/) If you don't check check marks in "wipe" section, nothing should be wiped. You don't loose warranty. You will receive OTA updates after it (matched with the newly flashed region, not the original one). And you don't need root nor unlocked bootloader to do that.

in "exclude" section, select "partition".
if you don't mark "partition", your internal storage will be deleted.

1) Yes you can
2) No you do not need an unlocked bootloader, or root
Thanks @S1gma:

Does anyone know if you lose your camera DRM keys?

DRM keys are not lost

How to update an already rooted Z5

Hi!
In february I unlocked by bootloader and rooted my Z5 following thsi guide.
As you can see on the screenshots I am on version 32.0.A.6.200.
My phone is branded by the "Deutsche Telekom".
Now I have seen (in XperiFirm) that there is a version "Telekom.de DE 32.1.A.1.185" available.
I cannot figure out how to update an already unlocked/rooted device with stock rom to the newest firmware without loosing the root/unlock status and without wiping all the data.

yuo can update with flashtool but you have to root again flashing a recovery and flashing supersu after that another way will be a flasheable zip but i think even you have to flash the kernel with flashtool.
if you don´t want wipe anything ensure unchek all marks on wipes part in flashtool.

Firmware

Folks, I unlock the bootloader xperia d6633, now I can no longer update the device the following screen
Settings> About Phone> Software Update
I wanted to know how do I relock the bootloader, and able to upgrade to version 23.5.A.0.575
I'm a beginner, possibility ,possibility of video?
thanks
:confuso:
Edit: you can relock the bootloader without TA, there's an option in flash tool. DRM keys are still gone though
It is made clear that once you unlock the bootloader warranty is lost and many Sony software features such as those affecting camera quality are lost.
You will need to update manually with flashtool which will work fine with unlocked bootloader and is not very difficult.
http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
All this means is you need to get the firmware as an FTF file for your phone probably from here on XDA (make sure its for D6633) and then use this tool to update the phone. Google is your friend for a guide.
Edit: I probably need to tell you DO NOT try to flash a TA partition from anyone else or in flashtool (when there are tick boxes for "exclude" make sure you exclude .ta files) or you will hard brick the phone (dead as dead can be).
Ideally if you're going to unlock the bootloader you should root kitkat firmware and then take a TA partition backup to be able to restore DRM at a later time if you feel the need to.
Root here (other methods available, but I like this way):

Did you backup the TA partition? If you did then go ahead and restore it to your phone.
If that means nothing to you then you didn't and you cannot re-lock the boot loader.

Really? I missed that bit I thought there was no way without TA
Okay I learnt something new
Don't just say it though explain how so he can do it!
(And so I can learn instead of passing wrong information again like an idiot )
Edit: found a tutorial. They explain relocking just after how to unlock
https://blog.unlockbase.com/sony-xperia-z3-unlocking-relocking-tutorial/
Unfortunately though this does not restore DRM keys (I wish though) so as said some software on stock rom won't work, but there is a flash able zip to enable most of it though

[Question] Unlock bootloader risks

Hi all!
I have my Xperia M2 with the latest firmware: 18.6.A.0.182.
I want to root it, and install a custom recovery, and i know how to do all of this through this forum. But I need to unloock my bootloader.
What's the problem?
If you go here: (i can not post links, the developer sony / unlockbootloader) and warns you:
Important note! In order to unlock your Xperia™ M2 you need to be on software version 18.3.C.0.37. Also beware that booting this device the first time after unlocking the boot loader may take a long time.

I don't know why this...
Searching in google, the people recomends to use flashtool to unlock the bootloader.
What will happen if i intend to unlock it and something goes wrong? I don't know how to solve a soft-brick withouth an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks for your help.
Hey, first do it the official sony way flashtools doesn't work for many including me when i unlocked my bootloader. http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
Second if anything goes wrong, just reflash your firmware (jellybean, kitkat, lollipop whatever) through flashtools and it will be back to stock.
Unlocking your bootloader there is not much which can go wrong.
Btw, you will lose your DRM keys. 2 of them i think for buying stuff through ps store.
Also if you run into problems post here we'll help.
Now I have root with KingRoot. If I make a backup of TA partition i can restore DRM keys when I like it, no?
And the magic question for me is: How I flash original firmwares if the bootloader is locked? I only need locate the right FTF and with flashtool is enought?
Thank you!

Yes you can restore your DRM keys backup if you want in the future.
And if you want to flash a FTF on locked bootloader you can use Flashtool by Androxyde or Xperia Companion.
Ok, thank you all, I'll try to backup DRM keys and unlook the bootloader and I'll post the results!

[Ask] Z5 Dual E6683 32.0.A.5.19 DRM

Hi guys, so i just bought a Z5 Dual E6683 online yesterday and it turns out to be a Commercial/review model with 32.0.A.5.19 firmware installed, and I'm planning to root it to restore my Titanium Backup.
There're 3 things that I want to ask,
1. Is it possible to root it and upgrade to MM but with DRM still intact?
2. If so then do I need to flash another ftf 1st or change kernel or anything?
3. If I flash another Lollipop ftf, does it erase my current DRM or no?
Nah you have to unlock BL to get Z5 rooted. You can try the DRM backup tools though.
Patched kernel is enough just for root
If you flash official FTF you won't lose DRM(you only lose it by unlocking BL), however, I don't think it is possible to flash back to LP

You mean there's no going back to Lollipop once you patch the kernel and upgrade to MM?
But to patch the kernel I need to unlock BL right?
So, in conclusion I need to flash official LL ftf 1st (any build (?)), then backup DRM and unlock the BL, patch the kernel, and finally upgrade to MM?
And do I need to backup my current firmware (32.0.A.5.19) ?

You have to flash a Lollipop firm, then use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597 . Backup your DRM and then you are ready to open the bootloader, and flash a rom or root or do what you want.
You are on right firmware to root and proceed.
1. Is it possible to root it and upgrade to MM but with DRM still intact?
Ans. Yes, use this tool to back drm first from http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597 and then unlock bootloader and then download any MM firmware and flash. Then you need patched kernel to root your device from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...ot-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605.
or I have already made for E6683 for the latest MM firmware here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/root-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605
you can use as you wish.
2. If so then do I need to flash another ftf 1st or change kernel or anything?
Ans. as i said above.
3. If I flash another Lollipop ftf, does it erase my current DRM or no?
Ans. flashing doesn't erase anything but bootloader unlocking does. So answer is NO.

Flash FTF via flashtools and wipe everything it's pretty straightfoward, you can get it here. Download, open xperifirm, flash.
To restore drmkeys you need to have a backup before you unlocked your bootloader otherwise your DRM keys are lost forever and you will have to flash either a kernel or
drm fix.
