How to update an already rooted Z5 - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
In february I unlocked by bootloader and rooted my Z5 following thsi guide.
As you can see on the screenshots I am on version 32.0.A.6.200.
My phone is branded by the "Deutsche Telekom".
Now I have seen (in XperiFirm) that there is a version "Telekom.de DE 32.1.A.1.185" available.
I cannot figure out how to update an already unlocked/rooted device with stock rom to the newest firmware without loosing the root/unlock status and without wiping all the data.

yuo can update with flashtool but you have to root again flashing a recovery and flashing supersu after that another way will be a flasheable zip but i think even you have to flash the kernel with flashtool.
if you donĀ“t want wipe anything ensure unchek all marks on wipes part in flashtool.

How can I update my 6603 an retain root?

So I have an xperia update alert. Is there a way to update to the latest and retain my files as well as root access?
No. If you are on KitKat flash a pre-rooted Lollipop.
If you upgrade you can root only if you unlock the bootloader. It is the only way to root Lollipop directly.
There is no sense to upgrade, then downgrade to root. Do that now, since you are on KK.
In short : Do not upgrade officially, upgrade by flashing a pre-rooted Lollipop. You can do that even with an locked bootloader with Flashtool. Find an appropiate ftf.

I'm not on KK, Im on lollipop but I believe there's a newer version to LP for the Z3. I'm on 23.1.A.0.690
What size is it? Maybe it's not a firmware update.
It's an Xperia system update I can't pull up details about it without beginning the install process
you would have to flash a pre-rooted flashable rom to retain root, ota updates generally tend to kill root

Thanks, I've been a little out of the game when it comes to flashing and rooting. I rooted my phone about a week ago and put lollipop on it. I assumed it would be the case that i'd have to flash the updated version I just wondered about retaining my files because i've gone through a bit of trouble debloating and tweaking the phone.
you'll most likely have to go thru that process again of debloating depending on what rom you install as it will most likely put most of the stuff you have removed back into the system

I suppose I don't mind debating again but what can I use to make a backup of my apps and app data? to then restore once updated... are there any full proof tools?

There are loads of tools for this, probably the most well known in titanium backup

[?] Flash 23.1.A.1.28 OTA on rooted Z3 ? [SOLVED]

Hi all,
I have a rooted Z3 with dual recovery and locked bootloader running firmware 23.1.A.0.690.
Since the OTA to firmware 23.1.A.1.28 is minor, I was wondering if it is possible to flash an update zip file while keeping root and modified recovery.
any idea ?
thanks

Modified bootloader? Do you mean unlocked? If so then you cannot do OTA, is says so explicitly on the Sony site about unlocked bootloaders. But you can make a backup in recovery, flash a stock FTF of that version (System only) then just flash back your custom kernel (Before booting the phone) and restore data from a backup
If you mean locked bootloader then you can OTA, if its a small update then the chances are it wont format system so you will keep root, but if its a large file the chances are it will format system then re-install it so you will lose root.
Just flash a pre-rooted version of the updated ROM in recovery
Sorry, i meant keeping root and modified recovery (not bootloader).
My bootloader is locked indeed and i am on stock kernel.
So, to your point, i should be safe upgrading minor OTAs?
If so can I anticipate sony's rollout of the OTA and flash the update zip? And where can it be found?
Thx

Maybe.... it all depends on whether or not the OTA formats system and reinstalls it. If it a minor update they may not do that so root and recovery (Which is in system for locked bootloaders) are not deleted.
Its a gamble...
to be 100% safe, you will need to get a prerooted flashable zip and flash it
Hmmm... Ok, but upgrading with a prerooted zip involves flashing a full rom not just the update right?
I am ok with that but would rather save the hassle.
Thanks for the advise
Hi,
Happy to report back that OTA process went smooth.
I am now running 23.1.A.1.28 and still have full root & dual recovery!

Sorry friend but it was not clear to me... you updated via OTA and keep the root?
Yes that's right. I fixed the typo in my last post.

How do you do it? I mean, you were stock .690 berofe ota?you delete anything of stocks apps??because i test to do the ota update but at the end of processus it's says "verrification impossible" and i saw somewhere that's if we touch or delete stock apps we can't ota ....ans if possible, nobody van do a flashable ZIP with just ota update????
I was stock indeed, and you are right playing with system apps probably prevent OTAs.
That's why I deactivate system apps rather then delete them.
I guess you will have to do a full rom flash.
I'm on stock ROM rooted. Updated to. 28 via OTA just only. Root access still available!!
Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalk 2
No possible to create a flashable ZIP with just ota update???it will be wonderfull
I believe this is just minor update. So lucky for me haha

[Q] Help with installing lollipop on unlocked phone

Hello !
I recently bought a used Z3 6603, and wanted to update it to lollipop.
But it seems it has a unlocked bootloader (according to service menu) and when i recieved it, it was factory reset, but some 3rd party apps were still installed.
One of them Super SU, so it was rooted.
I was told that i could update the firmware if i just used the Full Uninstall feature in Super Su, so i did that.
I still can't update using sony companion, becouse it knows the software is not the original one.
And i cant reinstall super su, its saying that there is no SU binary installed and the program cant install it.
I have flashed phones before, but it was really a long time ago, so im asking for some help to fix this.
Its running 4.4.4 build 23.0.1.A.5.77 and stock rom i think.
Please tell me what to do, and what info you might need !
I want to have the phone in lollipop, but everything stock, no root, no bootloader etc.
And somewhere I read something about DRM keys. Please help me with fixing that aswell thank you.

Your DRM keys are lost forever.

Ok, so they are lost even if I use the first backup that was made by the person I bought it from ?
DRM=Hardcoded=Once unlocked, always DRM free, even if you use the recovery image ?
And the rest of the questions, what am I supposed to do to get stock lollipop?
In the matter of fact it does not matter if its unlocked or locked, I just want legit lollipop, with the possibility to update regularly. (But if root is possible at the same, it can still be rooted)
Thanks for your reply !
You need the TA backup. Not system backup.
And careful not to restore some other TA.
If the previous owner backed up TA, good. If not, no chance to recover them.
Download your specific firmware in ftf format and flash it with Flashtool.
Make a clean install.
You cannot recieve OTA with an unlocked bootloader, only if you relock, but there is no point in doing that if the DRM keys are lost.
So, from where you stand, keep it rooted and unlocked, because you can do much more with it : Custom ROM' s [at the moment stock is best]...custom kernels with recovery...mods...etc.
After you flash the ftf, flash via adb a custom kernel with recovery and from recovery flash SuperSU update, as a flashable zip, that will root the phone and install SuperSU.Search also for busybox flashable zip.

Ok, I will try that then, but if I use flashtool to update to lollipop, will I still be able to root easy, or should I reinstall 4.4.4 clean, then root, fix recovery kernel and everything, and then lollipop or what goes first?
Does flash/kernel etc affect the fact that it has an unlocked bootloader ? do i need to do anything with that, or do it stay unlocked?

If you have unlocked the bootloader it is always a trivial matter to root.
Just flash an insecure kernel.
If one does not exist use [NUT]'s online kernel builder to make one with recovery incorporated in it. Its very straightforward and an automated process.
So, update using flashtool, flash your custom kernel, and you have root and recovery.

1. Sorry for my noobish question, but define insecure kernel?
2. Did I get it right? I read about ppl downgrading their phones to 4.4.4 and then installing stuff. And for me it does not matter wich version it is, becouse the unlocked bootloader makes it easy to flash, even what version you are running?

1) a rooted kernel.
2) If you have unlocked there is no need to follow any of the locked bootloader guides, they are a waste of your time. One of the points point of unlocking the phone is to easily get root. You just flash a custom kernel to gain root.
If you have a locked bootloader then you have to go through all the fuss of downgrading etc etc.... but with an unlocked bootloader its so easy and straightforward

[Ask] Z5 Dual E6683 32.0.A.5.19 DRM

Hi guys, so i just bought a Z5 Dual E6683 online yesterday and it turns out to be a Commercial/review model with 32.0.A.5.19 firmware installed, and I'm planning to root it to restore my Titanium Backup.
There're 3 things that I want to ask,
1. Is it possible to root it and upgrade to MM but with DRM still intact?
2. If so then do I need to flash another ftf 1st or change kernel or anything?
3. If I flash another Lollipop ftf, does it erase my current DRM or no?
Nah you have to unlock BL to get Z5 rooted. You can try the DRM backup tools though.
Patched kernel is enough just for root
If you flash official FTF you won't lose DRM(you only lose it by unlocking BL), however, I don't think it is possible to flash back to LP

You mean there's no going back to Lollipop once you patch the kernel and upgrade to MM?
But to patch the kernel I need to unlock BL right?
So, in conclusion I need to flash official LL ftf 1st (any build (?)), then backup DRM and unlock the BL, patch the kernel, and finally upgrade to MM?
And do I need to backup my current firmware (32.0.A.5.19) ?

You have to flash a Lollipop firm, then use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597 . Backup your DRM and then you are ready to open the bootloader, and flash a rom or root or do what you want.
You are on right firmware to root and proceed.
1. Is it possible to root it and upgrade to MM but with DRM still intact?
Ans. Yes, use this tool to back drm first from http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597 and then unlock bootloader and then download any MM firmware and flash. Then you need patched kernel to root your device from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...ot-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605.
or I have already made for E6683 for the latest MM firmware here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/root-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605
you can use as you wish.
2. If so then do I need to flash another ftf 1st or change kernel or anything?
Ans. as i said above.
3. If I flash another Lollipop ftf, does it erase my current DRM or no?
Ans. flashing doesn't erase anything but bootloader unlocking does. So answer is NO.

SM-G955FD upgrade to Pie from 7

hello everyone,
i have S8+ with android 7 installed, not rooted and still didnt get any OTA for either oreo or Pie, so i decided to do it manually but i wanna make sure of the steps since it's been a while for me not flashing anything.
first thing i should know is that this update is going to wipe my phone due to the bootloader update
and about that bootloader update, should i flash pie bootloader first or just flash a stock ROM with odin that includes bootloader file ?
any help with this issue is much appreciated

If you are going to update with Odin flash full firmware. ( 4 files )
As for wiping your phone when you unzip the downloaded firmware there will be 2 CSC files.
CSC - Clean install will wipe your data ( same as factory reset )
Home CSC - Dirty install should keep your data
Always do a backup before doing anything.
Note: Make sure after you upgrade your firmware to update your apps so that they will be comparable with new firmware.
