I just got an OTA update. The "details" weren't detailed at all... just "improvements to android." This is just a heads up if you want to check for one. I'm also curious if anyone knows if this brings any improvements?
I don't have a wireless charger (Samsung has it and is supposed to be fixing it) but maybe this will fix the wireless charging problem?

So far in the Verizon notes it's a security patch only

Are we supposed to be getting anything else soon?

@Hezzennater, wat's the build no.? If it's oi1 or oi# then most probably it's Samsung Pay update all Samsung devices in US are being treated with right now.

I want to update and enable Samsung Pay and fix the wireless charging but security patches always take away possibility of root etc
I got it and I see the updated kernel, etc.
Still fails the stagefright check!

Someone in the other thread said they worked for Verizon and that the last update allows for Samsung pay to work, but since they aren't officially supporting it, the last step is Samsung making a special update to give it the feature, somehow not through Verizon?
Everything is hearsay, anecdotal, and annoying. But that's all we've got I suppose.
The update makes the wireless charging worse for me using the older mini charger, it worked fairly well before the update.
Correct, It unlocks the functionality needed for Samsung Pay, Verizon and Samsung are still negotiating official support. Samsung is not willing to activate Verizon members cards until Verizon makes an agreement.
I hesitantly took this update on my Note5, and so far regret it. Everything was running absolutely fine until the update, then things got weird. I get ANRs, which isn't a terrible thing when seldom, but then the lock screen crashed over and over, and wouldn't let me do anything. Also, during the crash, it showed my home screen wallpaper and contents, which I'm pretty sure is a security concern. Anyways, I had to do a hard reset, and it cleared that issue up, but now boot time is significantly longer and the finger print reader is giving me problems. Not once did I have a problem with the finger print reader before the update. I'll look into this and see if anything in my control is causing this instability.

Interesting. I took the update and nothing is wrong for me as far as general day to day tasks go. Fingerprint scanner still works and everything feels just as smooth as before.

Get Zimperium stagefright detector from the play store and it will show the device is still vulnerable.
Now I'm not having issues like other users but Antutu scores dropped and things like crossy road are unplayable.
If this is how things are to come I'm done. This device was nearly perfect and now not so sure. I'm still in my 14 day period to return this device, may just do that.
More than likely it's due to the new kernel. With a locked bootloader this is impossible for the user to fix.

Weird, I had no issues. Hopefully it was a fluke and it clears up fo ryou.
Also, it seems to be confirmed that the OTA update does allow for Samsung Pay to work. Now we have to wait for the app to be released to the play store.
This is the Tweet from Will Graylin saying, "soon to be down loadable on Google Play for Verizon customers. Hoping in the next week or so."

It's not the April patch and we already had March's with Nougat. Hopefully some bug fixes and performance improvements. My battery has been a lot worse since Nougat
I notice a slight performance increase. Battery life definitely improved.
After the update, my phone won't boot past the Sprint LTE screen. Any one else with issues?

I didn't see an update from you about this, but I wanted to weigh in. I saw this thread and your issue. I installed the update myself and it seemed to stay on the Sprint LTE screen for way too long. I actually had time to stare at it, worry, then pull up this thread, reread your issue, read the reply about recovering, and reread the solution! Then the screen dimmed and after I stared it down some more, it loaded the system stating the update was successful. Not sure if this was your issue, but maybe? For those that may run into this, I guess be patient!

To fix the issue, I had to perform a clean Odin flash then update. I'm guessing the conflict was related to me previously being on the beta versions of Nougat.

I had same issue before this update. Phone was stuck on beta version and said I was on the latest version when checking OTA. Smartswitch is complete garbage. Not only do you have to mess around with old C++ redistributable just to get the latest Smartswitch to run, once you do get it running the auto-prompt to revert back to stock no longer worked and the manual recover feature also didn't work as it said I had an invalid serial number even know I didn't. Not only did it not work, apparently the serial it wants is on the box only so if you don't have the box your SOL. I had the box and it still didn't work. Total lousy tool and worthless.
I ended up having to flash the official build with ODIN doing a clean flash. Once I did that, everything was great. Issues went away (battery drain, lag, getting hot, etc) Now this latest update popped up like normal. Update didn't take long to install, all good.
So those that were on beta at some point, use ODIN to flash official build. I already have a GS8+ on order and moving to big red after 15+ years with Sprint. Sprint is taking away subsidy on top of I can't take the network anymore it's total crap. That is a story for another day.
Well if anyone cares, the update includes the checks against hiding GPS mock apps from system. No more hiding. No more Pokemon Spoofing, if you're into that.

I have the same issue. Updated late Sunday evening and never got past the LET screen. I left it on over night plugged in and still at the LTE screen in the morning. Went to Samsung Experience Center in Best Buy and they re-flashed and all was well with no data loss.
I was prompted for the update again this morning, ran it and again looking at the damn LTE screen as I type this. The Samsung folks are off until Thursday so trying to figure this out. The SmartSwitch app does not recognize the phone.
Will look at Odin and appreciate any tips you, or anyone, has.
Anyone notice the nougat update lowered the phones resolution to 1080P ? I just realized it. i stayed on the OG firmware PB5 till i saw a hotspot no root hack.

does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?
some tools titanium backup et.al. need root access
Yeah I also want to root it. Plz anyone tell the method.
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

i mean yea, kinda, but your not gonna get updates. Personally I am just gonna update my phone, and hopefully they find a way to root. My biggest concern is using samsung pay with my Gear S3, while having my phone rooted. idk if that will be possible so until then im just gonna wait.

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

I use it also from my S7 Edge. Works just fine. I have the BT version of the Gear S3 tho. Pay dont work with international(the one on amazon) version of the S3.
So I noticed most of the pink screen fix updates were only 200mb ish. Today AT&T got that update, but it was almost 500 MB. More than twice the size. Any ideas on what else changed?

AT&T usually posts a changelog within a few days of pushing a new release.
Meanwhile, the update itself displays this helpful information: "The software update supports enhanced performance and other device improvements".
It's G955USQU1AQDE, and the security level is still April 1, 2017 (not May).
Think it adds the red tint fix. So there are more display options.
I'm on verizon and haven't gotten a update since release day when I picked it up.
So one issue they seem to have fixed was that annoying DQA app popup that I disabled and re enabled before the update.

Its carrier crap not actual android stuff. Never really liked into it. But I've seen it before
I could be wrong but that looks like a Samsung update and not a carrier or Android update. I do believe I have seen those before.
Thanks for the replies. I did wonder if I'd had one before but wasn't sure. If it is from Samsung, I wonder why they don't just stick it in with other updates.
These are updates pushed from Samsung and contain carrier app and carrier specific config updates.
These are mainly used for small, carrier specific updates.
You can use an activity launcher to view some of the info. Look for Configuration Manager
