Samsung Red Tint Update Fix - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Well it appears Samsung is going to release an update to address the red tint issue. Still worth returning for a new one or do you think it might actually be software related?
https://www.google.com/amp/www.zdne...ce-software-update-for-galaxy-s8-red-display/

Considering it's only affecting South Korean units, I'd say it's a hardware defect and not something that can be permanently fixed with a software update.

Reading this forum and others - users across the EU, UK and US have seen this problem - it isn't just isolated to South Korea unfortunately.

If this patch doesn't fix it - I'm just going to return it.

Not sure if you all are new to Samsung phones or just gullible. Have you seen the side by side comparisons? It's a DEFECT not an adjustment issue.

I think you can use the XDA forum here as reference. Lots of people here in the US receiving red tint.

I've been speaking to Samsung UK and I directed them to XDA for all the various issues.

Myself (in Spain).
I have a red tinted screen. Specially on the sides. I hope they release a real fix for this

I pre-ordered my S8 direct from Samsung.com store with Gear VR glasses for USA T-Mobile (black color). Got it yesterday and mine also has a reddish tint most noticeable on the right edge. The red tint is not as noticeable or not at all if you look at the screen straight on. It is more noticeable if you view the screen from an angle.
Note to those who say that they are not affected by red tint... I thought mine was not affected either out of the box as the screen appeared "white" initially looking at the screen straight on. Hardly noticed any reddish hue. BUT, if you have other phones with real white screens and you put it next to the S8, then you will see that the S8 indeed has a reddish hue to it. So you all should double check like this and see if your S8 has a red tint or not. I think they all do as to me it seems like a screen hardware issue not a software issue, since the red hue is not consistent in intensity across the entire screen but is more prevalent in varying spots of the screen. Software misadjustments I don't think would present itself that way on the screen! Samsung has an issue with this I believe.

I received the update from TMO last night and no it does not fix anything. The update allows for the red hue to turned off even further but it does not fix anything what's so ever. The red tint is still there. Absolutely unacceptable. Samsung's QA has gone to **** and it only proves they worry about numbers and not the quality of their product. It's sad because their phone designs have stepped up big time compared to other OEMs.

Considering there's no certain pattern yet about which phones are affected, I noticed someone who had the issue had a Made In China manufacturing location, for the rest of you who have the red tint issue, where are your phones made?

well if its like the ipad and its a manufacturer defect I wont return it its not terrible just curious if its only me with the backlight bleeding
I noticed it a little bit on the top corners when I first powered on the 2 that I have. I don't notice it at much during use though (a tiny bit when watching something full screen with dark colors in the corner).
I noticed it too when I turned mine on. I do not notice it when it is up and running

I'm replacing mine too, but I'm going to ask the customer rep tommorrow if there's any way to go in store to arrange the exchange so I can make sure I don't get another phone with a bleeding backlight problem. I'm surprised that they didn't catch this somehow?

Let us know what they say.
I originally ordered mine online and just called to get replacements. The rep said - and it is on the return form - that you can only return/exchange through the channel you purchased. Or, if you are a new customer, you could cancel and then go to a store and sign a new contract - and get a new phone number.
Customer rep said she'd escalate the issue, and that once the issue was assessed, they'd make sure to check for the issue in the replacement units, so she said they won't be sending out faulty units. She said I was the first person to comment on it, so I'd recommend that more people call in to T-Mobile to make sure they address the issue. I'm surprised so many people are having this issue! Also said that it has to be sent through the warehouse and I couldn't exchange in store.
I have some minor bleeding but nothing irksome. I checked it on full screen apps, not startup.
I'd replace it if it was guaranteed no leaking I guess but not going to go nuts over it.

Yellow/Orange spot on Galaxy S 4 G camera

Whenever I take a picture under any kind of artificial light I get bright yellow/orange spot at the center which also shows up in pictures.
My buddy has a vibrant which does not have this problem. I know cell phone cameras act funny in artificial light and I have tried changing white balance from auto to different settings but no luck...
just went to tmobile store to exchange it but they said this is a known software issue which will be fixed soon...
I'm running latest GB leaks and the issue is still there so I don't know about that...
Any feedback guys?

Anyways, like what everybody says, your best bet would be to get yourself a replacement. Maybe you should try changing the camera app through SGS Tools.
Thanks a lot for the help guys, just got back from the store with a replacement and guess what, this one also has a YELLOW SPOT. Its not as prominent but its still very noticeable. No one else has this problem if you take a picture of white background?

I have same problem with me and my wifes phone. If you take a picture of a white wall or white paper under incandescent light you can see a orange hue srtarting from the center and fading out. It works fine under fluorescent or natural light. I think these phones have a super cheap Chinese camera in them. Just gonna go with gs2 soon. This phone has been awsome for the most part but signing a new 2 year contract for the gs2 is a simple solution for me.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I'm going to speculate it is a rear camera issue. The front facing camera does not have this problem. A good way to check your camera for this problem is to turn up the contrast/saturation/sharpness all the way up. You will REALLY see it if you haven't noticed it before.
I have this issue too. If anything, it is an issue with this phone itself. I will tell tmo and hopefully get a nexus prime.

Do you think we will suffer from this issue as the regular One X has? It seems to be a large-scale problem.

The displays on both One X's are the same. You guys are already getting both cool and warm displays. Unless the spots are Teg3 code/driver related (most of the graphics-related problems are) you'll get them too. A note, the international forum is very emotional so divide an issue at least by two when forming an opinion.

Ugh... I don't get why HTC would use 2 screens. I ended up returning my unit because Rogers refused to exchange my phone.
It is really hard to live with the warmer screen once you see the cooler one.
People who settle for the warmer display are missing out IMO... The warm screen is nice... but the cool one is "wow" nice.
Remember the iPhone 4s had yellow spots, it was from the adhesive not fully drying, they told the phone owners to wait a while and it would go away. Could be the same case.

Plan on picking the One S up soon...

I currently own a G2x and am really interested in picking this baby up. The last few days, however, I've been reading about a lot of issues. These are mainly quality control like wear and tear on the power key, the paintjob coming off on the sides, etc.
I was hoping some of you guys could share your experience with the phone and whether or not I should take the plunge. Is everyone having the qaulity control issues?

My device is working amazingly. great battery and performance. the only paint chip issue is with the black and red model. I have the silver and blue model with absolutely no complaints. My suggestion: get this device!
I am very happy with mine.
I have a D30 cover on it, so I haven't seen the paint issue (or because the T-Mobile US model doesn't have the issue) and my power button works fine.
I also came from a G2X.
Agree with all of them .....one of the best phones out. No disappointment...no regrets with this phone....its the real deal and T-Mobile has an update coming out within a couple of days or so...so any lingering bugs should be fixed...this is a high quality phone built to last! High recommend it to anyone

The T-Mobile version is the grey+blue version. This one does NOT have the chipping problem. As far as I understand, T-Mo will not be selling the black+red version. The only way to get black+red would be to get the international version shipped from online. The grey+blue (no paint chipping issue) model also has an international version as well (not T-Mo branded). I would prefer to get the T-Mo version (if you have T-Mo) because you can get it for a cheap price with contract extension if your line is upgradable.
Either way: black+red version = chipping problem, grey+blue = no paint chipping problem. The reason is because of the material it is made of. The black one goes through a process called micro oxidation where the metal is zapped with a lot of electricity. This leaves the black finish over the metal, which may chip over time.
I'm really happy with mine too. Only a couple of minor software bugs for me (that will probably be fixed with the OTA).
About the chipping (and pretty much all problems with all phones), it's hard to say how prevalent the problem is, because usually only the people who have problems speak up. You almost never see anyone make a "Who else's phone is perfect and totally awesome!" thread. So there could be hundreds of thousands of people without problems, but you only hear from people with issues, which makes things seem much worse than they are.
If you're really worried, I'd say go for the silver one - still the best looking phone out there, regardless of color. Black is boring anyway.

very simple, made in taiwan stuff meant to be sold in usa has to have higher quality otherwise the government of this country will kick htc's butt lol. while made in taiwan stuff meant to be sold in whatever party of the world, I dont thing is a big deal
I love my One S. The only thing I'm not totally happy about is the display. Sometimes the right edges of icons or text are a bit pixelated. However, this is not noticeable in games or movies which is what I mostly use mine for anyways. It's a very sexy device, and once I rooted it and put Trickdroid on it with a few tweaks (6 x 5 app drawer and removed the 3 dot menu stuff, remapped the soft touch buttons), it's just shy of perfection. Damn sexy looking too.
So basically I should get the blue version and don't have to worry about the chipping?

Correct. The process they used on the black and red version which causes the chipping was not done on the blue and grey version. =)

I have the One S myself, and yeah, I don't like the screen b/c it's not as high res as the X.
I just got the One S, but am thinking about jumping ship to the SG3. One of the things I like most about the One S, however, is the f/2.0 aperture on the camera which allows for better pictures in a low light situation.
Anymore input?
I'm still considering picking this phone up, convince me not to lol.
I kinda like the greyish color not tho, so the chipping isn't a problem.

At the moment, nothing. There really isn't anything that they can do once the process to the aluminum is completed. A coating to cover it is only as good as what it's covering, and if that chips, well...you get the point.
If you're stuck on the red/black one, just make sure to buy a clear case for it and you should be okay. Alternatively, I maintain that the grey/blue one is pretty sexy. And Samsung's plastic phones with Touchwiz suck. Don't do it. =)

This is happening a lot. I don't think its an issue of misuse at this point. There have been a ton of reports of this exact thing happening.

This is obviously a manufacturing issue with the lcd under the glass. I have just read to many threads of this exact thing to believe its misuse at this point.

Right cause a wonky story and the fact that he says the phone is made in "Vtnam" means he's giving the whole story... Most of these cases are from misuse if not 100% of them. People don't realize a big screen means you need to be a little more careful. Jeese...

For everyone who's saying it's all from misuse, think about the S3. How many people had this issue with the 3? None that I can think of, and personally I abused mine - dropped dozens of times and it was still in one piece when I traded it in for the S4. I don't think it's a coincidence that all of a sudden A LOT of different people are reporting the same thing.
me either. I don't see why everyone has such a hard time admitting that there may be a quality control issue here. Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't make it not true. I am personally nervous every time I put my phone in my pocket. I have since taken out a squaretrade policy due to this issue alone. I would love to use my phone without a case but I seriously don't think its wise with this going on. I wonder if its isolated to a bad batch or a design flaw in the total manufacturing process.
It's all your fault, didn't you know you were supposed to carry it around on a down feather pillow.

read all the comments on this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQ14_8XDqQ of the same thing happening to A LOT of s3 owners. make sure you read the comments and the problem starts to become very clear. This issue dates back to the s3 and I even found evidence of the oled on s2's doing the same thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5KxsniG_NM Samsung knows about this problem and refuses to acknowledge it. These customers are NOT abusing their phones. this is a major manufacturing issue with samsungs amoled screens.
My s3's outerglass screen majorly cracked 3 days after purchase from a mere 1.5 foot fall onto a hardwood floor. First time it saw any impact. It's ridiculous. I read many forums with tons of people having similar problems or worse like screen cracking from just being inside a pants pocket. Seemed to be an issue with the gorilla glass screens from all info i gathered. Samsung refused to even acknowledge there was an issue. Hate to think there is an issue with s4 displays too.
