That's odd I have the classic version and it is water resistant. I have put it under water fine with no problems. That was a selling point of the watch for me and as the only thing that was different from the watches was the body language. I'll check my oem box at home and see if it says water resistant

I just checked the box of my classic gear s3 and its IP68 waterproof - has anyone gone swimming with it?

Just checked mines and it is ip68. I haven't gone swimming with it but showering or washing the watch is perfectly fine

I am looking to purchase the gear S3 and I'm doing one of those rugged maniac races in June - does anywhere here know if the watch will survive being dunked in puddles or possibly muddy water for short period of times? It won't be submerged for long time and no more than a foot submerged I believe. I see on the website that it is ip68 and I researched what that means, but still kind of skeptical.

Someone may have better info but they do have warnings about the "ports" that work for the altimeter and barometer and the speaker. Water probably dries but muddy water might leave deposits. Download the pdf manual.

I agree with the above poster. I've had mine under water several times without harm, but what you're talking about would make me hesitant. Dirty water is one thing but you're probably talking about extremely muddy water.

Samsung Galaxy S III Water Proof Coating From Liquipel

we has earlier rumored galaxy note to have water proof coating!
but it seems sgs3 to have for sure!
SGS3 water proof by Liquipel
not a big deal, any phone or electronic device can go through that
it's only $70 bucks, check their website for details
you send your phone to them, they coat it
then they send it back to you
as simple as that
^ thats awesome! i didn't know that!
oh, that's good news
knock on wood, never had water damage on any of my long list of phones from the past. Drops...?? now, that's another thing. That's what happens most of time, getting out the car, slipping out of jacket pocket etc... if there is some way phones could be made so I don't have to use the ugly protectors / cases....
I agree. I'd be more interested in a phone that won't show the wear and dings that day-to-day life bring to a phone. It's a sexy piece of hardware! I don't want to have it in a case all the time!
HTC thunderbolt 4g has liquipel feature who knows may be iPhone 5 too.
Are there not issues with this tech causing components to overheat?
Personaly dont care about water prof feature wish they make it skratch resistant

I Don't like Apple One Bit
My vote for a shock resistant one...
Samsung Galaxy S III? Its really exists?

i think it's really nice development for the coating,
cause it can be used for so much devices!
I hope it will be designed for GNote

I love how the liquipel videos say "Now, our company does not recommend that your Liquipel coated device come in contact with water". Nice disclaimer there. Anyone know what their warranty is like?
As far as the device breathing, I don't think it's an issue. The coating doesn't seem to be like a bag, glove, etc. It's super thin. Air, basically heat transfer, will work just fine. It's like putting a tiny coat of polyurethane on something, heat still transfers.
My questions are with the contact leads for the SIM and SD card. Does the coating effect flow even in a very small manner?
We need a scientist to tell us.
Nice
Sounds good but honestly how often does somebody drop their phone into water. 30 years never happened to me. If that bumps the phones cost up $50 then I'd rather not have it.
Cool! just like watch..
can I swim with it?
For anyone wondering how the phone will breathe, they put the phone into a vacuum sealed chamber, and coat it at the atomic level, binding it with their water protection.
As you can see in their videos, it works underwater, with the ports submerged, you could just dry it off, plug it in, and work again.
They say it'll last for 30 minutes underwater, so yeah... you could technically use it underwater (only at 3 feet though, anything deeper must mess with something).
It also gets into every little nook and cranny, so EVERYTHING is covered, including the insides (internals) of the phone.
Pretty amazing if you ask me.

Drop Test Video - Not too bad

It survives drops on to its back and bottom edge. Being dropped on its face does it in. Even after that though the AMOLED panels works. That's good because the SGS4 was have strange issues with the AMOLED cracking but not the GG3 panel it was bonded to. For the N3 it seems the AMOLED panel's a bit tougher.
I always hate too see the phone I really like get abused like that lol, but so worth it!

Too bad it's made of plastic. If this was made of premium materials it would have torn up the concrete right through to China.
Broke an early released ATT phone, blasphemy!
I hate these droptests like hell. What a waste of materials and rare earths. THIS is decadence on its highest level.

Well, it has to be done. Even upper class cars like a Hummer, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes S or SLK and BMW 5, 6 and 7 are being destroyed in crash tests multiple times... That's a waste, too. But it's for security reasons. And phones are somewhat cheaper.
btw. I had to find out the exact same results on my N2 by myself. I accidentally dropped it many many times and it survived every single time. But last week it fell out of my pocket (3ft. / 90cm) right onto its face, and guess what, Spider Man was there. Just like in the video. Still working, but now I have this webby foreground as well.
So long, thanks for the video!

That's a godawful comparison. "Drop tests" are completely retarded. They're poorly conducted, unscientific, and thus unreliable as a metric for... well... anything. Car crash tests are well conducted, and reliable. Very rarely do people give a damn about how a phone will hold up to a drop before they buy it. They just buy the phone they want. This isn't necessarily true with cars. People with families are very interested in crash tests. If someone drops a phone then they take the consequences as it happens. In the little time between the drop and it hitting the floor no one is going to take solace in a drop test, and the people who really do care about this type of thing use cases which makes the test all that much more useless. Additionally cars are much more sturdy, and take much less punishment to the actual chassis over their lifetime. Over the course of their lifetime phones have many minor "car accidents." Throw it on the bed, bump into someone in a subway, fumble it, but not quite drop it etc. Cars don't take that proportional level of punishment over their lifetime, so when a phone first "drops" they'll be significantly weaker than it would be coming out of the box.
tl;dr. Anyone who puts any stock into a phone drop test whatsoever should seriously examine what they believe to be their actual level of intelligence.
Drop tests can actually be.very interesting. But only of its testing a phone that was actually.built with durability as a selling point,
Take the Sony Xperia z for instance. The Sony rep was in our store today and threw his phone on the hardwood floor 3 times on purpose. From about 5 feet high. Not a drop... a toss/throw. And not a scratch on the phone..
I am sure 99.999% users will keep the phone well and won't play "daredevil".
Get a decent case (hybrid is preferred because my Note 2 was saved twice from breaking with these hybrid cases).
If you think drop test is not enough? Check out "dovetasatic" on youtube. Ken can do much further from microwaving to using other ways you never expect.
What's the point of random people on YouTube performing this test?

No. Dropping something is a dumb test no matter how you attempt to look at it. Objects rotate when dropped, and thus hit semi randomly. This goes even moreso for throwing things. Drop tests don't mean a damn thing.

Clearly you fail at physics there. Plastic is light and flexible, so it's protects better by absorbing the energy on impact and hard to deform.
What are premium materials? Glass and aluminum? Glass could shatter and aluminum could deform to the point that it wont let you close the lid.

water damage?

Has anyone found any information on how samsung plans to deal with an S5 that has water damage. being that the phone is supposed to be water resistant ( and I have watched a few blogger test of the water proofing with surprisingly good results) also post general water resistant discussions here

It isn't supposed to be waterproof. It's supposed to be water RESISTANT for shallow water (1 meter I believe) for 30 minutes or less.
Point made and that is what I meant. But still curious if Samsung is going to stand behind that

Yeah how do you/they prove that it leaked at 1.1 meters or .9 meters?
I have a feeling that it will usually swing their way and they won't cover it....

Gear S2 (Sport) Water Resistance - Tested

Today I was rowing in a boat on the UK river Thames (dirty water ) wearing my Gear S2 Sport and we unexpectedly capsized.
I was wearing the standard plasticky TPU strap.
I am pleased to say that the watch performed well. The deepest it went was probably around 2 feet, and it was submerged for around 2-3 minutes while swimming to the riverbank. It survived the dirty river water and never stopped working.
Some hours afterwards, the rotating bezel felt a little strange and clunky, so I span it round a few times and it's all good again, it maybe even feels a bit better than it did before! I expect this to revert back to normal as it dries further however. I believe this was due to some water caught in the back of the bezel.
Overall this watch appears to be waterproof for everyday use. I would not wear this while swimming (at least when it is planned anyway!) but if you fall into some water or drop it in, it should be all good.

Its Rated IP68 so it should be good for 9ft of water at 30mins.
IP68 means dust tight and water proof beyond 1M (3 feet) for 30 minutes.
It does not mean waterproof to 9 feet.

Yes -- all gear models.
Excluding the leather strap, of course
I wore mine in the shower by accident a few weeks ago and I had condensation under the glass after I got out. Doesn't look like it caused any long term harm but I don't plan on getting it wet on purpose.

Waterproof up to 9 feet still qualifies as "water proof beyond 1M (3 feet)" ?

Beyond 1m, meaning the manufacturer specifies the limit (though you can assume if they don't it will be ok at least to 1m). The reason for this is one of the lower ratings (IP X7) is to 1m. So IP X8 is beyond 1m, thoughno one should assume more the the minimum unless explicitly stated.

Shower is considered water jets (or powerful water keys, depending on pressure/speed.) The force of the water from a shower head can easily exceed that of 1m of standings or gently moving water.
Though I only think of the IP readying as a safeguard, I don't intentionally get any of my electronics wet lol.

That's bad luck, I've worn mine every day since November. I don't take it off for the shower or the swimming pool and it's perfectly fine.

Using Gear Sport in sea salt water?

Hello,
Is Gear Sport safe for use in sea salt water? Mediterranean or Red Sea.
From my mechanical watches past I remember recommendation to put a watch in a fresh water after sea bathing, to remove salt.
Is it the same for Gear Sport?
Thanks!
Hmmmm.
You could try...
But maybe look at this, about Quality... Gear S3:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/help/bezel-peeling-t3649339/post74668286
Only as hint.
So at your own risk to test your SM-R600 in salt water...
Best Regards
Yes reading all the reviews that mention it it should be safe to use in sea water, probably worth rinsing off with fresh water afterwards though.
The sport was made with saltwater in mind. It is the only Gear watch that claims to be protected from it, so you should be fine.
