It survives drops on to its back and bottom edge. Being dropped on its face does it in. Even after that though the AMOLED panels works. That's good because the SGS4 was have strange issues with the AMOLED cracking but not the GG3 panel it was bonded to. For the N3 it seems the AMOLED panel's a bit tougher.
I always hate too see the phone I really like get abused like that lol, but so worth it!

Too bad it's made of plastic. If this was made of premium materials it would have torn up the concrete right through to China.
Broke an early released ATT phone, blasphemy!

Well, it has to be done. Even upper class cars like a Hummer, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes S or SLK and BMW 5, 6 and 7 are being destroyed in crash tests multiple times... That's a waste, too. But it's for security reasons. And phones are somewhat cheaper.
btw. I had to find out the exact same results on my N2 by myself. I accidentally dropped it many many times and it survived every single time. But last week it fell out of my pocket (3ft. / 90cm) right onto its face, and guess what, Spider Man was there. Just like in the video. Still working, but now I have this webby foreground as well.
So long, thanks for the video!

That's a godawful comparison. "Drop tests" are completely retarded. They're poorly conducted, unscientific, and thus unreliable as a metric for... well... anything. Car crash tests are well conducted, and reliable. Very rarely do people give a damn about how a phone will hold up to a drop before they buy it. They just buy the phone they want. This isn't necessarily true with cars. People with families are very interested in crash tests. If someone drops a phone then they take the consequences as it happens. In the little time between the drop and it hitting the floor no one is going to take solace in a drop test, and the people who really do care about this type of thing use cases which makes the test all that much more useless. Additionally cars are much more sturdy, and take much less punishment to the actual chassis over their lifetime. Over the course of their lifetime phones have many minor "car accidents." Throw it on the bed, bump into someone in a subway, fumble it, but not quite drop it etc. Cars don't take that proportional level of punishment over their lifetime, so when a phone first "drops" they'll be significantly weaker than it would be coming out of the box.
tl;dr. Anyone who puts any stock into a phone drop test whatsoever should seriously examine what they believe to be their actual level of intelligence.
Drop tests can actually be.very interesting. But only of its testing a phone that was actually.built with durability as a selling point,
Take the Sony Xperia z for instance. The Sony rep was in our store today and threw his phone on the hardwood floor 3 times on purpose. From about 5 feet high. Not a drop... a toss/throw. And not a scratch on the phone..
I am sure 99.999% users will keep the phone well and won't play "daredevil".
Get a decent case (hybrid is preferred because my Note 2 was saved twice from breaking with these hybrid cases).
If you think drop test is not enough? Check out "dovetasatic" on youtube. Ken can do much further from microwaving to using other ways you never expect.
What's the point of random people on YouTube performing this test?

No. Dropping something is a dumb test no matter how you attempt to look at it. Objects rotate when dropped, and thus hit semi randomly. This goes even moreso for throwing things. Drop tests don't mean a damn thing.

Clearly you fail at physics there. Plastic is light and flexible, so it's protects better by absorbing the energy on impact and hard to deform.
What are premium materials? Glass and aluminum? Glass could shatter and aluminum could deform to the point that it wont let you close the lid.

So here i am, getting my phone. IT's fairly hot...of noes another SOD. I'm walking, take it out of the case. Take off the battery cover....and it slips. Im around 5 11 , and was holding it at chest height when it fell. No joke, it was like time stopped. I saw it fall slowly, without any protection
It hit the ground...and the battery flew out (obviously). I was scared even though the screen didnt crack. because the flipping Camera hit the ground first since it popped out!
At first, it wouldn't read the battery, and showed a question mark. A quick battery remove and insert fixed that.
It works fine, but after that momment, im scared to drop. Can't bear to see my baby damaged
Just wanted to share a story.

The odds of a phone surviving being dropped is so variable that it is unpredictable except for obviously disastrous circumstances. Wear textured rubber gloves to reduce the potential of dropping it.
I remember when I dropped mine about 5 feet face down on asphalt/concrete whatever it was and I was so mad that I walked away. Didn't bother to even look if it was cracked because I thought it was done. I ended up picking it up and it was pefect. No scratches on the screen only on metal sidings.

I've heard peolpe dropped theirs 3 feet and it breaks. Personally I dropped mine off a 15 foot ladder at work and it landed on sharply corrugated metal flooring face first. Heart skipped a beat, I went and pick it up and nothing at all happened No scratches, nothing. But then again, Gorilla glass is made to not scratch from metal so drop it on concrete and I wouldn't be to sure.
Ive dropped mine a few times, and in my case, the corners are pretty easily dented, like soft plastic.
Ok sit back and grab a beer folks. I have a story to tell. So ever since I got a newer phone a few months back I've been using my 4g as an MP3 player. For that it is truly one of the best phones around. It sounds way better than that newer phone I have. Add some Raver magic, some voodoo, some jetAudio, and a great pair of earbuds and you have just setup the perfect audiophile device. If I told you I listen to music a lot it would be an understatement. I listen to music most of my waking hours. With my old Ipod I was lucky to get 12 hours of tunage before it needed a recharge. With my current setup I can listen to tunes for damn near 24 hours before the battery needs some love. Now I can already see a lot of you are thinking "Who gives a crap!" Well this background will help better understand the events that occurred today.
This morning I headed out of the house to do some climbing. I always climb with one earbud in and my 4g in my back right pocket. I've done this literally thousands of times and never had an issue. Well today that all changed. As I got about 80 feet up a little Slayer came on. Sweet. The timing was perfect. I was about to do the hardest section of the climb and "Dead Skin Mask" was just the psyche I needed. I launched into the crux and at about 90 feet realized I didn't have it. Crap. I'm about to take a fall. I make one last ditch effort to find the right hold but it's too late. I'm too tired and the holds are just too small. So a falling I go. Something else that I've done quite a lot of. After about ten feet every thing pulls tight. Just as that's happening I notice my music isn't playing and my back pocket feels a little lighter. I look down just in time to see the reliable 4g slam into the ground. **** that's not good I thought. But I'm hanging 80 feet up in the air so I'll deal with it later. After a brief rest I send the rest of the climb and clip the anchors to be lowered. As I walk over to the patch of dirt the 4g hit I'm already saying goodbye to a trusted friend in my mind. Picking it up I realize the glass is still intact. What? How is that possible? The case is split open about half an inch. I snap it back together and it stays. Crazy! This phone should be in at least ten pieces. The ground it hit is pretty hard. I press the power button my home screen greets me. NO F'ING WAY!! It lived. After a few minutes of playing with it I verify that it is indeed fully functional. So 80+ feet of free fall and a working phone. Anyone ever heard of such a thing?? I think it might be a record.

Yep, it think you beat the record lol. I remember the first day I had the phone, one of my Asian friends kicked it out of my hand about 10 feet into the air, and at the time I didn't have a case. It was the longest second of my life man, it bounced twice and landed face down on gravel. I picked it up and it only had a scuff on the top left corner of the chrome thing. I think I shat myself lmao
Yeah. No case for this guy either. Just the phone and some free fall. I wonder what terminal velocity is for this phone?
Nice story, the original sgs is great at taking abuse, its plastic is good for absorbing the shock from falls, and its chrome coating along the screen has helped prevent the screen from shattering many times for me
Never had a case on mine either, once I dropped it on my gravel driveway and it definitely hit face down...... still nothing, not a scratch on the screen, I enjoyed the story thanks for the share

Wow. Glad the phone is OK. I just hope this doesn't happen to me, because with my luck...
Beats mine.. 40 mph bounce on pavement while riding motorcycle. I looked down after feeling tug on earbuds. Phone had slipped off seat while hugging a turn. Watched it bounced on pavement. Headphones stayed plugged in and I was able to safely pull back phone, but battery cover/battery stayed down. Phone has small scratches on bezel, but no damage. I did a U-turn, just in time to watch gramma run over cover (missed battery, thank God). I mumble that she must have aimed at it. But, still, went to pick it up. It wasn't all bustedup. It still works! 1 small crack by head phone Jack, but I was able to put phone back together, restart Metallica channel on Pandora and scoot down road...
Bullet proof.. and Yeap, I believe, your 80 ft drop cause I watched a 40 mph skip.
Great story, glad you didn't hurt yourself. The flip side is that these phones, like any, can crack with minimal fall height if they hit the ground "just right". I cracked the screen on mine with a less than 3 foot fall off my lap onto a tile floor. Definitely recommend a case.
Couldn't agree more about the audio quality on these phones. The Wolfson DAC's with Voodoo Sound are sick....main reason I still have the phone.

Thanks but climbing is actually pretty safe. lol And yeah my other phone fell out of my front pocket, landed on pavement and cracked the glass. Judging by all the scratches on the case it looks like the 4g hit on it's right side. Still amazed it lived though.
Not as cool, but first week I got this phone, I was listening to music while in the car when my friend slammed the brakes on us and from the back seat my phone flew out of my hand and smashed into the back mirror and broke it off. My phone didn't have a case at the time so I was kind of surprised that one, it could even do that, and two, that it was still running. Made our day.

I think I found a way to not drop it again. I found an old carrying bag that's a little bigger than the phone. It has a draw string enclosure. I pulled the old shoelace draw string out and replaced it with 4mm purlon that's about a foot longer than needed. Phone goes in pouch. Pouch gets pulled tight and tied off with a square knot. The pouch goes in back pocket. Extra cord goes around harness and gets clipped off with a carabiner. Know way I can see for the phone to take another fall. Maybe I'll start marketing it soon. LLOL
hechoen,
Great story! Looking around, it's good to know I'm not the only one that abuses his devices. I'm a little more on the "less mistake" side of device abuse though
When I've totally given up on a phone, I use it as a tool or give it the classic "Touch Down Dance". Next time I do this, I'll record it, so you know when I've had it.
I gave my blackberry pearl the TDD just before I got my htc dream. Then it got ran over by the S.L.U.T.
I got really mad at the dream one time and used it to shut a door from across the room. Never did any damage to it at all. Not even a scratch.
Now I have the SGS4G, AT&T Note, and still use my dream as a media player. I've tried REALLY hard to not just TDD the sgs4g. I think about all the time I've invested on this thing. Literally blood, sweat, and tears. If I were climbing and listening to music, I might option to use my dream as to not risk the sgs4g... but you and I both know that a time will come when all has been done with the SGS4G, and it will have to go back to it's creator... I will definitely share that experience with you guys. Some day.

Terminal velocity is about 95 mph if it falls thin edge down but since it would tumble it would be more like 60 mph or so

What are you using for Drag Coefficient in you calculations? I'm assuming the from impact marks that the phone fell long side facing down and it landed on edge. From that I calculate the the cross sectional area to be 1.879 square inches. Mass is 4.16 ounces. Air density at 4000ft on a 75 degree day is 1.4kg/m3. DC for a human is 1. So using 1 which I think is super high we get 121 FPS. If we bring the DC down to .3 which is the DC for a car and a bullet we get 221 FPS or 150 MPH. This is all assuming I straight fall in that orientation. From looking down at the phone before impact it appeared to be falling without any wobbling or flipping. I tested this by dropping the phone from 8 feet up onto my couch and in that distance it remains stable in free fall. So it fell from about 90 feet up. At 32feet per second squared it would have been in freefall for almost 2 seconds and reached a speed of nearly 64FPS or 43MPH. Someone wanna check these to make sure I'd love to have it verified or not.
Now do it using the metric system. Slugs and foot pounds make me sad

Drop tests aren't always accurate, as quite a lot depends on where the point of impact is after the fall. Overall though, given that the S4 did survive a few of the drops is a good thing, as it seemed the S3 is a bit less durable.
Either way though, Gorilla Glass isn't meant to offer a ton of protection for drops - It's scratch resistant, not shatterproof.

Haha I most certainly am... I'll be posting pics today. I'm just most upset that the bezel chipped apart. I think that if it were able to absorb some of the impact or if there was a simple metal bezel the device would have fared much better.
Actually, the fact the plastic bezel broke too meant that even a metal case wouldn't have saved you.
Read up about "crush zones" in cars and how if the frame (bezel in this case) is crumpled, it reduces the damage to the people inside (screen in this case).
It sounds like your phone hit the corner and hit hard enough that unless you had a TPU case, it would've been dead either way.
+1. A lot of factors go into how phone damage occurs when you drop it. Five feet without a case purely on the corner is enough to damage the best of builds but throw on a decent tpu and your phone might live to see the light. Also would like to add that as long as you can replace the screen with ease, which luckily Samsung designed the phone well enough to be disassemble, it's not that bad of a situation.
At the end of the day though you should really get phone insurance. It's the best case money can buy lol

If you're a little handy with fixing phones and what not then you might be in luck. The glass and lcd can be separated just like the s3. Lcd which is the display has the touch built into it. The glass is just for protection. Ive done it on the s3 many times. With a heat gun and a blade. The glass alone cost $30-40. Find your local repair shop at most you should pay is $150.

Dude! I totally feel your pain. I cringed and had flashbacks from when I did the same thing to my Captivate a while back. Same height, landed on the spot and same result. I had dropped it from 5 feet and higher before but that sweet spot is death for a phone.
Mine took the plunge from a bunk bed, yours?
As the phones screen size increases the phone will crack easier from drops

Yea its a heart breaker, I was using anbold iPhone 4 for 2 months waiting on it.. Talking smack to all my iPhone 5 owning family members.
I live in Phx and the weather just hit 100 the last 2 days, come home from work and one of the 2 ac units was broke. In the dark using it as a flash light, trying to pull the disconnect on the ac and then the crash. .. wanted tovcry but manned up and held it in haha
Thanks everyone for the the suggestions
First of all, let me say that I really like the S4. I sold my iPhone 5 and be able to buy it at full price when it was released. I like the size, it's just about perfect size for me, fits well in my hand. The air gestures and air views are pretty nice, they come in handy. Coming from an iPhone, having a replaceable battery is priceless, I liked being able to swap out my low battery with a full charged one.
My first S4 broke while in my pocket on 5/6, I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, was just doing things around the house, when I pulled it from my pocket there was a crack from the upper right corner down the middle of the left side. The AMOLED display under the glass is what broke, device was unusable, nothing showed on the screen except some colors on top left above the crack.
After fighting with AT&T and Asurion the entire next day, AT&T agreed to give me an early upgrade. So I bought a new one on 5/7.
I received my new S4 on 5/10, then this morning, 5/15, while at work I was squatted down, texting, and dropped it from around knee level on carpet with padding over concrete and it cracked the AMOLED display, this time in the upper right corner, with 4 cracks from the side to about an inch into the display.
This S4 had a Spigen Ultra Thin Air case on it, as well as Spigen's Glas.t Slim screen protector.
I don't expect manufacturers to make phones that are indestructible, but this seems ridiculous to me.
I was a long time Apple user before I bought the S4, I don't think I will ever go back, but I'm regretting going with Samsung now. I've spent over $900 between both devices and now they are both in the mail (as well as almost $200 in accessories that are worthless now), for Samsung to evaluate, so for the next two weeks I'm stuck with using an old S2 that likes to reboot every 15 minutes.
I've read a few posts on here about people breaking the screen under the glass like I did. So I'd be careful if you own one.

That sucks dude. But hey, a little advice...fix that S2! If it's rebooting like that, there's something wrong. There are several super-stable Jelly Bean roms available for flashing these days. I come from that world, so I know it like the back of my hand...PM me if you'd like me to help you make your S2 awesome.
Before anyone says this isnt a necessary thread, I think it is.
Having a 32GB and having spent money on my device and screen protector and cases I'd like to know this too, so I would love to hear from anyone else that has broken their device easily
Damn that sucks OP. I think you have bad luck with the S4, I remember when you mentioned the S4 screen cracking while it was in your pocket. I would get another phone if I were you.
I have a really hard time "feeling sorry" for people who drop and break their phones and complain.
I don't know what kind of response (pity?) that you want from people.
Drop the iphone 4 in just the right spot and it'll crack too. Every phone is the same more or less.
Don't want a broken phone? Don't drop it. You break it that way, the fault is no ones but yourself.

That's kinda of an ignorant comment, the OP had his screen cracked and it was just in his pocket so no drop at all. The second time it was a drop but it is his experience and I understand it especially when you purchase a device this expensive twice. Don't be rude man.
His story for breaking in his pocket was "while around the house". So whats to say he didn't accidentally smash it again something while doing housework or anything else like a table?
Dropping your phone - what do you expect? Go buy a Nokia if you plan on dropping it. Even then im sure drop proof isn't part of any phone's warranty.
Pretty straight forward. You may not like my "tone" but you can't honestly count it against the phone if you're not keeping it safe. The error is human in this case. Own up to it and take better care of your phone.
I've cracked iphones and android screens and bodies before, it was probably my fault in handling it; but you definitely won't see me running to a forum and complaining about the manufacturer having shoddy quality when it was clearly human error.
I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's the Chinese models in specific breaking like that because I have seen multiple S4's dropped now WITHOUT ANY CASE from 6 feet and survive with only scrapes to the actual frame and here you have a case AND a glass screen protector, and it falls from half the height and suffers catastrophically.
Has to be something more going on here. Reviews will also show the phone can survive falls just like any other premium metal phone and then some, so quite an odd case here
ALSO to everyone else, stop hating on the OP. Yea I have to agree it's just really vague to say your phone was just up and broken, but I'm willing to look at it as the OP is telling the truth cause at worst, even if he is lying, it really don't matter.
No offense OP, but I'm going to call bull**** here. You have to be leaving out something -- even if it's by accident. I've had smartphones with larger screens for 5+ years now, and not once have i cracked or broken a phone. The last phone that broke was the first nokia clamshell that came out -- and that was after i dropped it from standing on to a concrete floor. Even then it worked still, the plastic just cracked a bit.
There is no way you broke your phone just having it in your pocket -- unless you were wearing super tight hipster jeans with your keys in your pocket. Futhermore, dropping your phone 2 feet on to a padded floor, won't just break your phone either....it just wont.
I've dropped my s3/s4 many times on to my wood floor now without any issues (without a case).
Also, wouldn't your phone be under the 14 day return policy anyway? If anything happens in those 14 days, you get a new one?
Overall, this just doesn't make sense. I think you are omitting some key details here; these phones ARE NOT that fragile.
EDIT-- How did you figure $900 dollars between two phones plus $200 in accessories?
A new line/renewal should be about $200-250 per phone; cases run $30-35, USBs 5-10, screen protector 7-15....
You should have gotten insurance.

I'm not asking for anything, I'm just putting this info out here.
In my experience, the S4 is easily broken.
And it's not glass that broke in both of mine, it was the display under the glass, the device was not usuable after. The glass was pristine on both, for that matter the both phones were as well, just the display cracked.
You can do what you want with the info, I'm just letting people know what happened with my 2 devices.
When you keep you phone in your pocket, make sure you always keep the screen against your leg. I broke my first Galaxy S2 with the screen out in my pocket when I leaned against a table.
I am shocked that the 2nd time with having a GLAS.t tempered glass that it broke.
You spend this kind of money on phone...treat it like your car....GENTLE. I have had a smartphone for years and not even 1 scratch on any phone I have ever owned. It is like your girlfriend or wife...Gently...
Very expensive way to learn.

Let's be realistic. It's no secret this phone is easily broken. And tbh, when you say something like "it's all your fault because you dropped it is a bit ridiculous. I've dropped my gs2 more times than I can count, face down, from up high, sliding across concrete etc, and the screen is still fine, but the build quality on the gs4 is seriously lacking. I'm scared to even buy one after hearing all these stories. For now I'm sticking to my gs2

How can you say the build quality is lacking if you don't even have one?
Just to be safe, think of it this way, if you drop it, it WILL crack. Of course, it might not but if you think it will every time, maybe a little more precaution will be taken. It doesn't matter if it was a mistake...just don't drop it. Any phone that is mostly screen will always have a certain level of fragility and should always be treated that way. It doesn't mean the build quality is bad.

Or like telling your wife about your girlfriend... handle it very carefully... like your life depends on it.
Samsung does extensive hard use testing on its handsets so I wonder if this was a bad batch or something. Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully we don't see a bunch of these threads popping up.

Ya my S4 broke too, dropped mine 2 or 3 feet in a case and the screen shattered, build quality is not there imo

well... i was just thinking about investing in a good case.. but now, i think i will buy insurance instead.. or maybe just sell it off.. really cant afford to loose an expensive phone like this.
thanks for the info.
Just a warning to everyone wanting to get this phone because it can "take the drops."
So I'm getting ready to watch the World series, sitting on my sofa and my V10 falls off the edge of the sofa on to the floor and guess what? The SCREEN CRACKED! Are you kidding me LG? You boast how this thing can take the drops and my phone falls TWO FEET and the screen cracks? Now I have to pay a deductible to get another phone? Yeah...let me get that phone, take it in and trade it for a different brand. Not sure if mine is defective or something but I've had bigger drops on other phones that had no issues. This is NOT what I expected from this phone - a phone I was hoping to keep and carry with no case. HORRIBLE experience! My G4 can take a bigger drop than that!
It's physics and coincidence. You were unlucky enough to have it a weak spot.
It happens.
Sadly, LG doesn't do the one free screen replacement like some other OEMs do.
Any phone can shatter with one unlucky 2 foot drop. LG is no different.
Sorry about the broken screen, though. That does suck.

Sorry for your loss.
I get that but they WILL be hearing from me since they tout in commercials how you can drop the phone and it can take it. Hopefully with the phone being so new they won't want the negativity out there about this phone and since I have the G4 and the V10, maybe they will be nice enough to take care of it. Who knows? Can't hurt to try. I'll update the thread once I talk to them.
Well, they only tested to drop the phone at 1-1.5 foot, anyway.

Actually, this is from LG's website:
1. The LG V10 passed a military standard test for shock (MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, Procedure IV – "Transit Drop"") that consists of 4-foot drops onto 2" of plywood over concrete. The test includes impacts on every face, edge and corner of the device. Further, the device passed an enhanced version of the Transit Drop test consisting of 26 drops from 4 feet onto a concrete surface. "Passed" is defined as the absence of any of the following issues: surface cracks, inoperability of device including camera, and separation of screen from monitor. Device may not perform as tested in all conditions. Test performed in controlled environment. Do not attempt.
I get that "device may not perform as tested in all conditions" but for Pete's sake, this thing dropped 2 feet onto carpet.
Very sad.

CARPET? I'm sorry, but I don't believe that. There is no way your phone dropped 2 feet onto a soft, impact absorbing surface like carpet and broke. Carpet is probably the safest thing you could possibly drop the phone on!
Wow, that is certainly sad. Man I hope they will replace it

I swear to you. I even sarcastically said to my wife, "Oh no...my phone fell. I'm SOOOO Worried." Then I picked it up and it was cracked. I was completely shocked myself. I kept saying, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????!!!!" Had I dropped it getting out of my car or something onto concrete, I would understand. I'm still in shock.
By the way ---- it's berber carpet and there's currently no padding under it because we had a flood and are waiting for new flooring. Thin carpet on top of concrete. Still...CARPET.
I am sorry, i recently dropped my Nexus 6. Although it didn't hit carpet it did have a case. I was bummed non the less
Thats unfortunate. No two pieces of glass are the same though. I work on concrete all day and i cant tell you how many phones ive dropped on it and never cracked a screen, knock on wood. I'm like you, I don't plan on using a case with this phone. I may think twice about that now.
Still waiting to receive my device but you don't need a case to protect the screen... Get a tempered glass protector
Best $8 investment you can make on your $600 phone

Yikes, I feel you.
Although it really is the physics of the matter, and drop tests are based on statistics, I feel you.
It goes completely against what you were lead to expect, and I agree, you need to let LG know, and everyone else who will listen.
I can't imagine the horror. Complain everywhere for what it's worth. 'Bad luck' would not appease me either in this situation.
I feel you.
Complain to LG maybe they will replace it

No other phone available to take photos right now (Wife sleeping with her iPhone plugged in and white noise on). But why would I make this up? I will post photos tomorrow night after work. Or maybe in the morning.
Definitely happened.
