Battery drain (Google account manager) - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Let me start off by saying I was so happy with this phone and its battery life but the past couple of days I've seen it drain more than usual. Upon checking I see that Google account manager is responsible for this.
Anyone have an idea what caused this? and how to fix it?

i noticed the same on my chinese mate 9 however the % is below 40 still, from what I can see on my case is the google photos app causing all the noise I had disable synching over cellular data but haven't seen any improvement so far. I did that 2 days ago

Same here on my P10.
How many Google Accounts do you guys have linked? I currently have 4.

Thx for your replies guys!
Meanwhile I accidentally found out that this might be the process what is on other phones the Google Play Services.
I tapped on the Google Account Manager entry and scrolled down to the bottom of the next view and there it is..
Still I haven't seen the "Googl Account Manager" process ever before I assume that Huawei handles or at least displays the processes differently than others (at least Samsung) do.
For me it's a good thing since I see way more processes sucking battery than my SGS7 showed me.
Remembering the battery drain on my SGS7 the Google Play Services had pretty similar battery drain like the "mother process" Google Account Manager has on my P10.
So I think that's it
What do you guys think?

I have the same problem, lot's of times it's a Google calendar fail sync or Google fit fail sync because the system close it and when Google account has do a sync that's impossible because the apps are closed so I'm testing to not force closing Google apps. I will tell you my results

Still shouldn't use that much. Literally it's the most used one. One hour of screen use today and I'm down 25%
My Huawei watch is the only thing connected. No autosync no nothing. Used it minimally. My note 5 after last update and a reset lost maybe 6% all day. Android OS n kernel aren't an option. It's not on 7.0 tho

Does anyone have a solution for this? It is horrible since a few weeks (no update in the meantime, no other apps installed): Google Play Services (Google Account Manager) are very active, device gets hot, reboot helps for a short time, but almost every day I have a huge battery drain. Before the last weeks, this was not a problem at all, battery usage was super.

Do you have developer options enabled?
I've had the same problem, after diasabling developer options it seems to be somewhat better but not really cured.
I also enabled in settings the automatic memory and data cleanup as I've found that cleaning all app caches helped for a short period of time.

I fixed my by doing factory reset. Now everything is back to normal.
Also before I had a problem that whatsapp didn't show messages if I didn't open up the app. This issue also got fixed the same time.

I'm suddenly having high consumption by media server - have no idea what it means and the phone is quite hot.

mediaserver can be due to listening or streaming music, or indexing music.
its fairly normal, however if your rooted you can disable it in an init.d script.
stop mediaserver works.
or
su -c pm disable mediaserver

Thanks, I've been listening to music all day. I'm not rooted so I guess I'll have to keep on with it.
Shut down for a while then restarted the phone and it's no more getting hot.

ive still got issues with android os using the most power. i only get 6-7 hours max screen time. i use my huawei watch via BT. latest update for the USA 183

Seems to be getting worse. Now I'm slated max 27 hours. WTF

in reality battery life never gets better. The constant discharge, and charge rates only put wear and tear on the battery. It would great to have the ability to swap batteries on the fly.

[Q] New Google Search Update Battery Drain

I'm not sure if you guys downloaded the new Google Search update yesterday. Apparently it was updated yesterday the 14th. But question is, anyone experiencing battery drain due to the new update? I charged my phone 100% my last night, woke up the next morning with it down to 35%. I checked the battery status and it looks like the Google Search application used up 76% of my battery over the night. Anyone else experiencing this with the new update?
I had the same issue. Updated Google search yesterday. Went to bed with my n5 battery at 45% and woke up with it at 3%. All due to Google services. I usually only lose 3-4% overnight. Going to see if it does it again, if so, I'll uninstall the Google search update.
Uninstalling app updates is almost always a really bad idea.
Reboot your phone and see if that fixes it. It's possible that during the upgrade process something hanged and THAT is what is eating the battery.
The new update is fine for me. If a reboot doesn't solve the issue you could look at clear the app data and re configuring the app.
OP, mine is running just fine - I suggest you should look thru all your Goole syn settings on the N5 to see what's running in the background, i.e. turned off Google Now, Drive, Photo & Music, etc. has yielded excellent standby time for me.
Not comparing it on the basis of screen on time, but it's been in standby mode for 2+ days and 50% power, with very moderate to no voice usage - and running Talkatone over WiFi. Google Search is 2% for me and of course, YMMV.

Uninstalling the app update is not a bad idea stop being dramatic
I usually reboot after I update apps, so it wasn't something hanging in the app update. It could have been stuck during an account backup via google's servers. I only have a few select things marked to sync in the account.

Experiencing the same thing but not quite to that extreme (lost 18% in like 8 hours). I am extremely frustrated because I didn't think to make a backup so I can't revert back and yesterday when I tried to just uninstall the updates, it screwed up everything that was laid out on the home screen.

[Q] Help! Google app is draining my battery!

Hi guys,
In the last few days google app is draining my battery. It is disabled for wake up and keep awake in privacy mode, I tried to calibrate the battery, nothing helps. Even when I put it on flight mode, the draining is insane!
I attached screenshots.
My phone is not rooted, and I cannot root it.
Thank you all in advance!
I uninstalled it. I do not ise the cards and voice assitant plus I am an old fashioned guy, using search function in Chrome. By the way I saw other people having this issue, but don't know if it was resolved.
Yeah same for me, mine has been draining so fast when the phone is idle too! I'm running xnph05q cm11.

For chrome, you can do the same thing as suggested above
Android OS and Android System.. You can't do anything with it.. If you play with them, you'll end up making your system malfunctioning..

Hi there,
Until I will have a report regarding your previous suggestion, can you please take a look at my screenshots and tell me why the GPS is always on when I am on battery saving all the time?
Something is draining my battery, I get only 2:30 SOT, in the best case, without games videos music or even phone calls.
Thanks a lot!

As you have not rooted your bacon, only thing I can suggest you is that with the help of Privacy Settings, disable access for wake up and keep awake for the apps which are not oftenly used and also Google Play Services
Battery saver mode disables background services of the apps and lowers done the device performance
Combination of above stuffs can help you increase your battery life to some extend
Your GPS is not always ON as seen from the chart

Facebook background battery drain on EMUI 5

Hey all,
I have an L04 running B360 Nougat with EMUI 5. I updated using Charles method. I noticed the Facebook drain issue pretty much right away after upgrading. So I did a factory reset afterwards, which helped at first. But later in the day, the app started draining again...
With the Facebook app installed, I notice ridiculous background CPU usage on Facebook, using about 20% of battery with over 1 hour of background CPU usage in one day. I tried blacklisting Facebook so it gets closed in the background after screen is locked, but I notice the process just starts itself again without me even opening the app....
I have notifications off on Facebook and a bunch of other things, but it still drained like crazy. My OP3 does not have this issue despite running also on Nougat. I have no idea why it drains so much, when it should be doing absolutely nothing in the background. Seems to keep the phone awake too.
Has anyone else had this issue? Currently the app is uninstalled so that I can get decent battery life.
I noticed increased battery drain in general with Nougat/B360, not sure exactly why. I recommend installing "Swipe for Facebook" in the meantime, as it isn't as battery intensive and is a great replacement for the normal FB app.
The Facebook app had a bug that had an issue with battery drain. Did you installed the latest version?
Try to download the latest Facebook and Messanger app from apkmirror and try again.
Thanks for the quick reply guys. I am going to check out swype in the meantime.

Yes they are the newest version that's on Google play store. Messenger itself seems fine, it's Facebook itself that's killing me...

I also recommend FB Messenger Lite if you don't really need the calling features of the regular Messenger app; I'm not a fan of all the Snapchat-like features that they've been adding to the main application lately.
I confirm that the Facebook app, no matter what version you have, is a huge battery drainer. It doesn't respect the EMUI settings or anything. It drained the phone over night even on flight mode.
After uninstalling it, the battery performance on EMUI 5 is very good.

Yeah I saw that on the forum yesterday. But I'm thinking I can't put that update on my L04. Swipe for Facebook seems to be pretty awesome, I have been using that. I also installed the regular Facebook app again to try once more, and it has already consumed 3 times the energy Swipe has consumed, and I used Swipe mostly..

If you go the application info and click on battery, you can find an option to disable the system wakeup (refer to the screenshot).
Overall, I did notice that the battery life decreased after the nougat update. I personally have problems with Instagram, I constantly have the power-intensive prompt notification, and just like you said, the lockscreen-app-kill doesn't work like it's suppposed to.

Yes, I have L04 on Nougat/EMUI5.
This option is not available for all apps, but I'm sure I've had it for Facebook with EMUI4.1

Its not problem of new emui 5 , Mine is running old version emui 4.1 and still drain battery for better battery performance use facebook via google might be way better then apps through playstore.
I use Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite, you can grab either from APKMirror.
So system wakeup toggle now magically shows up for Facebook. I switched it off, and it has been good on power now. However the funny thing is, when I go to "Apps that use power in background" screen, Facebook is listed there as an application that frequently wakes up the device. It's bizarre.
I'm monitoring power consumption of Facebook closely to see how it behaves.
Facebook is one of the apps that the company behind it has the mentality of "I'm going to run on the background of your phone no matter what". It's absurd. Three apps on my phone, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram (but surprisingly not WhatsApp) wake up at the same time. If one of them is allowed to wake up, wakes up the rest - it's insane. I've tried everything possible on a non-rooted, non-xposed phone. It just starts on the background, and you can see on Greenify wakeup tracker that the trio (fb, messenger, instagram) starts exactly at the same time.
Of course, this is not the first time they are being user-hostile: https://www.macstories.net/linked/the-background-data-and-battery-usage-of-facebooks-ios-app/
The only thing I found that kind-of mitigates the problem is using AppOps by Quixingchen ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rikka.appops ) which, in EMUI 5, allows to remove the permission to run in the background from certain apps. It doesn't require root, but requires to do some tricks with adb and usb debugging. Removing it on the trio of appls forces them to use the GCM push method, which is much battery friendly but may delay some notifications - that is ok for me.
I hope this post helps people with battery drain issues - me personally don't have any issues with EMUI 4.1/5 and facebook, but I was already aggressively trying to make fb stop running in the background, so I don't know what would happen if I didn't.

Having bad battery life on Nougat? Check this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What I have right now out of Doze are "Bluetooth MIDI Service", "Bluetooth Share", the "Clock" app and two other Clock apps.
I am not sure how effective is the method listed below after the last update. Stay tuned.
Also I think the current version of Facebook Messenger is draining too much battery.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello everyone,
when I bought my Zenfone 3 ZE520KL, I was amazed by it's battery life. I could easily get around 8 hours of SOT in a single charge with moderate usage. My device was running Android Marshmallow 6.0 out of the box, but performance wasn't as good. On Nougat, performance is much better and faster, also I used to get some lags and frozen screen, the capacitive keys also sometimes froze when I was charging my phone, but now I don't get issues like that as often as before. Interface is so much more appealing and I love it.
But what about battery life? I started getting around 5 hours of SOT.. which is still good, but not really close to 8 hours. I thought a lot about these 3 hours that were missing so I decided to start investigating. I wanted to share my findings with you so maybe you would know something that could help.
It's been two weeks since I have been testing out different things. The apps I used to do my research are:
Carat. What I love about this app is the process list. It shows exactly which apps and system processes are running in the background, so I can control them very easily.
Greenify. Thanks to the Carat app, I can see which apps continue running in the background, so I can use Greenify to hibernate them after I'm done using them. (Examples: Youtube, Snapchat etc.). Also I bought the Donation Package, and unlocked the other modes using adb commands (my device is not rooted).
BetterBatteryStats. This app is usually used to detect wakelocks. I limited the Google Calendar App from syncing so it doesn't use too much battery in the background. This app is paid in Google Play but you can get it for free from here.
What I did to get better battery life:
I excluded the services, that were always running in the process list from the Carat App from Doze. Apparently, the new Doze in Nougat gives us permission to optimize more system processes and services than before, which can backfire - Doze starts trying to kill processes that can't be killed, and this results in consuming more battery juice than saving it.
How to enter Doze settings and make the following changes:
Go to "Settings" > Select "Battery" > Tap on the three dots at the upper-right corner > Select "Battery Optimization" > Select "All Apps" > Find and tap on the Apps/Services/Processes I have listed below > Select "Do not optimize". The other apps and services should stay optimized.
The apps, processes and services that I removed from Doze are:
Android Services Library
Android System
ASUS Calling Screen
Bluetooth MIDI Service
Bluetooth Share
Camera
Clock
com.android.smspush
com.asus.keyboard
com.asus.shim
com.qti.qualcomm.datastatusnotification
com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice
org.codeaurora.bluetooth
org.codeaurora.ims
com.qualcomm.qcrilsgtunnel
ICESound Service
Mobile Manager
MobileManagerService
System UI
Telecom Service
Telephony Service
ZenUI Keyboard
ZenUI Launcher
Some other apps that I'm using: Do It Later, Greenify, Messages, Nova Launcher, Timely, Weather.
Please do a full charge to 100% afterwards and check if the battery still drains as quickly as before. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
I am already starting to see improvement in my battery life. I was losing around 2% on Stand By and battery was draining fast when I was using the phone, but now I lost 0% on Stand By overnight and 10% for 1 hour of SOT (before this I was losing 10% for 30 min. of SOT). I am still trying to figure out which services exactly are causing the drain, when they are being optimized. Maybe the services, included in the Android System? (Check them from Settings > Battery > Android System > Included Packages). I deleted Facebook and Twitter apps and started using them from Chrome (almost the same thing, I quickly got used to that). Please check the updates below for more info and share your opinion or advice in the comments so we can all reach a better experience with this amazing smartphone.
Thank you for reading!
Update1: 6h30min SOT with 30% left (917mAh, 35%), but I will have to charge now. I have been messing with Doze a lot, maybe I'll get more clean results later. Progress has been made though, at least with my device.
Update2: Something interesting - my J-Score with the Carat app before and after starting this experiment: http://i.imgur.com/Q8u6HBD.jpg
Update3: There is a battery drain when making voice calls - 226mAh (7%) were lost because of 43 minutes long talk time.
Results were worse after testing with the second list removed, although there wasn't much draining with the screen on: SOT - 5h20min for 70% of battery (752mAh, 20%).
Update4: com.android.phone appears as a wakelock at BBS (Wakeups:8). Also 2h30 SOT for 30% used battery (100-70%~408 mAh). I'm updating the list and trying again.
Please note that my phone is updated to the latest firmware WW_Phone-14.2020.1703.28-20170410.
Update5: com.android.phone is still an active wakelock (Wakeups:14), but SOT is 2h34min for 30% used battery (100-70%~343mAh). At 30% battery left, SOT is almost 6hrs(28%~787mAh), Device Idle is at 10% (291mAh). The MobileManagerService is causing way too many wakelocks and is probably the reason for the high Device Idle battery usage.
Update6: MobileManagerService is no longer showing as a frequent wakelock. com.android.phone (Telephony Service - Wakeups:9) and com.google.android.apps.messaging are the most persistent wakelocks, other than that battery life is amazing at the moment. SOT is 2h45min for 30% used battery (100-70%~366mAh). I also had 27 min of talk time (4%~145mAh). At 30% left, I have 6h33min of SOT (32%~912mAh). Device Idle is again at 10% (292mAh). We are ready for the final test.
Update7: The results are quite interesting. After removing com.qti.qualcomm.telephonyservice from Doze, com.android.phone stopped appearing as a frequent wakelock at first, but now, at 70% it has 16 wakeups. SOT is 2h22min (100-70%~318mAh), so it's not better. I'm going to try a few more changes.
Update 8: I posted it as a reply here.
Update 9: I shouldn't have put Task Manager out of Doze, I get so much better battery life now. The update is ready, check it here.
Good post, thank you for investigating this, please let us know if you find more stuff or what exactly is responsible for it and an easy way of fixing.

Hello! Thank you for your reply. I'm so happy I could help others and myself with this thread, but I also need to know if you are also seeing any difference. Please check here regularly!
Also, I'm guessing that when you put your system processes and services in Doze, you also decrease their performance, which causes battery draining, as they try to run normally and do their work. Doze is trying to prevent them from doing that. This is my conclusion, but only results will show if I'm correct. If you own yourself a Zenfone 3, please feel free to report if you experience any changes using my method.
Thank you and have a nice day!

Too early to say, also I got a weird wakelock, and lost 2% overnight. I lost the results (100-90%) after a restart. Now I'm going to update my phone and start again.
I had 8% used up on 43 minutes of SOT, and 2% lost on voice calls (100 and something mAh). I went to bed with 92%, I guess the other 2% were lost on that wakelock and the clock wakelock. These 2% were lost on equal intervals.
It's going to take a while, I'm just using my device normally. I don't have time to be on my phone all the time, also the battery is harder to drain now. At this point, I'm just trying to get better results.
Cheers!

I don't think it is a good ideea to change Doze settings for system services like com.qualcomm.* or telephony*.
In theory, these services should be compatible with operating system and they should work as designed. I would focus on third-party apps who doesn't work well on Nougat.
Anyway, is just an opinion and i'm looking forward for updates

Hello ci6i, I also agree with you, and that's why I excluded all of them from Doze when I first tried this out. At the moment, I removed only those system services, that run in the background all the time. My goal is to find the least amount of system services and processes, that are causing battery drain when the phone is in use.
I am not saying that you should do exactly what I did. It's best if you try out yourself on your own device what works and what doesn't.
I also have only excluded from Doze apps that I use daily. But everyone is using different apps and it depends only on the developers to update them.
You can download Carat for free from Google Play and check the process list, it's very useful. The app itself doesn't use any battery.
Good luck!

I agree with you and i really appreciate your work Yesterday I've installed Carat after i read your first post and today i did new OTA update and cleared cache partition. Let's see how it works in the next few days.
What should I do next, guys? Remove other com.qualcomm/com.android/com.asus services or remove just MobileManagerService from Doze? I'm thinking about the second one, I'm curious to see if ti makes any difference. I think the results from the first test were the best, and the MobileManagerService was out of Doze as far as I remember. Might as well try and see what happens.
It's a bit hard to drain the battery these days, so updates might not be fast. Patience is key!
Yeahh final test!! Looking forward to the result

All of a sudden, phone started using way more battery

Android 11, OnePlus Nord N10. Using for a couple of months. Everything worked fine, but recently, phone started to use way more battery. Like, it would only last about 8 hours, even when I hardly use it at all.
At first, I thought Google Chrome was the culprit. Phone's Battery screen in settings showed Google Chrome and Google Play Services as two top battery users, even when I would have chrome closed (recent apps shows nothing).
I have disabled Google Chrome and switched to Opera, this seemed to help, but then problem returned. Google Duo and Google Play Services were two top users.
I disabled Google Duo and now EVERYTHING is draining battery.
For example, right now, I have 40% battery gone in ~3 hours since full charge. I have hardly touched my phone at all (about 15 minutes of active usage max). My Battery summary shows many apps from my phone (maps, taxi, money management, youtube, messengers, work apps, productivity apps), each using 1% to 2% battery. And Google Play Services using ~8%.
How can I troubleshoot this to find out the root of the issue?
Do a Factory Reset.

Well that's one solution, but I've spent a lot of time customising the phone, and not all the apps have full cloud sync of their settings
Well, either uninstall them one by one until you find the culprit or a factory reset. Seems one of them is misbehaving

Thank you, this approach will not yield any results as some of the apps are useful to me, and i mean it, it's like 20 apps each using 1-2%, hardly its a specific app issue.
I was advised to use BetterBatteryStats to throubleshoot the issue and I'm going to try that. See specific wakelocks and services that keep the phone awake.

Still, the end result is the same. A few of your apps are misbehaving. I recon you the last update for those apps is to blame.
