I see people are having problems with RC2.
What is the difference between RC1 and alpha1, alpha2?
I have had no problems with RC1 at all,,,however, I had my entire phone wiped after using RC2 so the choice is yours.

Good to know, I've never needed to backup/restore on the Pixel yet so it hasn't been a problem for me.
RC1 definitely for now :
RC2 has issues (backups restoration not working at all, unwanted data partition wipes, etc...)
Alpha1 and 2 are what they mean : alpha versions (ports in very early development for device) and as such not to be used if newer versions exist (could contain bugs and non-working features, plus backups done with alphas will not be compatible with newer versions)

Thanks, that makes sense - alphas are earlier in development than betas.

I recently got 0RC2 and have been having no problems, just don't install the app through the recovery because when I did that it deleted my ROM.

Important!
It is strongly recommended that you flash clockwork recovery via NVFlash. If for some reason this or a future nightly build causes your phone to not boot up, you will not be able to boot into recovery unless you have it flashed via NVFlash.
NVFlash for Linux
NVFlash for Windows
To clear up some confusion, if you flashed your recovery via ROM Manager, you didn't actually flash a recovery. It is what we call a fakeflash, you should still probably flash with NVFlash.
Instructions
Download from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p999 and flash like you would any other ROM (via recovery or ROM Manager).
Be sure to backup before flashing, and of course a wipe is necessary when coming from stock.
Gapps are available from the usual places, however do not download the version that says it is for Tegra, even though this is a tegra device, as it will not flash.

ChrisSoyars Edit:
After skimming some of the posts in this thread, here are some things that you can expect.
What to expect
- Everything working including Wifi, GPS, Audio, Camera, Front Facing Camera
- Screen off animation is not enabled, therefore it isn't broken.
- Occasional audio problems (as far as I know they have not been fixed). If audio does not play just reboot.
- Automagical brightness weridness, this is controlled by the kernel and not userspace, even having it working is very hacky.

What exactly is a nightly? Is it just like an alpha build or something? I never understood the term.

They are also usually buggy; so if that isn't your thing, I would avoid flashing CM 7 (or 7.1) until it's final release.
Interesting... thanks for the reply.
thanks for this. I was syncing my repo and was going to compile from source, any reason as to not continue?

We don't do nightly builds until most everything is working, our nightly builds are "beta" status. We don't externally "alpha" test.

As long there is no official CyanogenMOD support on the Desire S, we must compile the nightlys from source for the Desire S.
I will compile a nightly if there are important changes or bugfixes in the cyanogen changelog.
These CyanogenMod builds are highly experimental and unsupported.
DO NOT: Post to the bug tracker
DO NOT: Think of this as official forum support; this thread will be strictly user to user support. Don't expect CM-dev help.

I think the idea with nightlies(official ones anyway) is that the users find all the bugs so the stable version can be updated with only the things that work, although i may be completely wrong

Well I think we already have too many CM version to test...No Stable version exists for cm7 though 1.3.2 of superkid is mighty close....
Even nightlys do have specs if you go through the sites....

you are right. i test every release before i upload it. if i found bugs i will not release it. but mainly the users should tell me what they find.

Just my 2 cents, but I'm thinkig, there's no need of CM nightlies. We should focus first on a real stable version, like superkid's one.
We are all working together on making the cm... we are all on the same team.. and what he does can help me, and what i do can help him
hi trismegistos
Does your rom contain some custom kernel or do I need to flash Tiamat?
I agree with that, but I think it's more useful to focus on a stable version rather than on a nightly build.

I posted that because the op's information was about as pertinent as my previous post. Rule of thumb, if ya want help, no problem...but atleast give us some information to work with.
What ROM are you trying to boot on? Chances are there are some merges in the new Kernel that will make an older ROM not boot.
Example: I was on CM10 M1. Couldn't boot on any of Faux's new kernels or KT747. Old ROMS didn't have new merges necessary to boot with newer kernels that had them..
or something like that. Solution - update to a newer ROM.

Cool. Ill give it a try myself.'
TWRP 2.6 is working just fine for me. It hangs for a couple (2-5) seconds before doing a couple of specific actions like rebooting, but that is not a bother for me because I have not problem with it.
Flashing ROMs is no problem either. I've flashed CM10.1 nightlies, Viper, bpear's seneless ROM, and another one that I cannot remember all without hiccups.
