Just curious, but let's say that we go to the market and find a cool new program.
Turns out, while it installs something such as a new IM client, it locks the phone up.
Is it possible? Can they change firmware from a software title? Just a random paranoid thought
Not quite sure by what you mean "locks the phone up" but if you mean make changes to the settings because you have root and left it open, yes. This has been addressed and if you have root, you should have already secured it. If not, you have 2 choices, a: realise you might not be a user in need of root, or b: go read how to secure root (with a password).
I have been an advocate of root on the G1 from the start, even while everyone was saying "users do not need root". I am recently starting to notice a lot of issues with users having root and blindly running apps they do not know about, or bricking their phones because they are running complex system commands without knowing what it is doing. Keep in mind, root = god as far as the phone is concerned. You can and probably will kill your phone if you are not careful. I would advise you obtain root, secure it and do not touch it unless you know what you are doing. This will give you the ability to use things in the future that require root while still keeping you somewhat safe.
Also, this is not directed only at the author of this post, but anyone who has posted in the last few days who is making changes they do not fully understand, running programs that require root without knowing what access they are giving it, or anyone who follows my advice and upgraded to root "just incase" but doesnt know what to do with it.
I do not want to see a massive rush of users returning "rooted" G1's to tmobile and getting refunds/exchanges and have tmobile suddenly think this is an epidemic and start really working hard to secure the phone. That would not be good for anyone, but that is where were are headed.
Technically, yes...
Just like nuuneoi's Orientation program runs as superuser without letting you know...
I don't see them being that sneaky, though... It probably would provide ground for a class-action suit if it comes from T-Mo.
how can we sue? i didn't read the fine print, but i would imagine flashing a modded version of android would break their TOS

I'm just speculating... It just seems sneaky and evil...
I assume the TOS relates to the actual "service" (haven't read it, either). They can ban me from T-Mobile, but they better not maliciously install their poop-infested code in phone.
P.S. People are gang-bang suing for the early cancellation fees, even though they all signed the contract.

Um...the fact is, Google is allowed to kill any software they think is "bad". This has been public a year before the phone's release.
Now, I have downloaded the patch and installed it (to have a pop-up asking if it's ok to run root)
However, many of us are new to nix commands as I am myself. How do you assign a password to root?

God mode for my phone? Yes please.
Stop with the fear tactics regarding the dangers of root access. People actually going through the trouble of figuring out how to do are aware of the risks. It will never be an issue of phones returned, because an unlocked phone return is an immediate dealbreaker, warranty void, and most people understand that.
But the desire for freedom. Maybe I have to move to another country but this lock down bullsh*t on U.S. phones in particular is a real nuisance.
They track us with the gps, FBI can listen in thru the mic even when the phone is off, they have the remote kill switch.... at least let me install the apps i want with root access for the love of Chr*st.

The warranty wouldn't be void so long as you flash back to RC29 or 30 without the mods (both avail online)... just FYI
Nice to know consumers and civilians still have a trick or two left up their sleeve in this over-controlled greed filled market.

You have just shown that your post count is probably even with your "read" count. If you had been reading this and other forums you will see that lots of users are installing root, running commands they find in random posts, installing apps without knowing what they do etc... For you to come in here saying everyone knows the risks is absurd. Also, if you had read anything here, you would see that numerous users are on their "new" or "second" G1 after having bricked it somehow and returned it for a replacement. At the time being tmo doesnt seem to know how to tell if a phone has been tweaked, but they will soon.
Spend some time upping your read/post ratio and then come back with your opinions.
Dude, come on... I appreciate the typical response about reading through the massive forum before posting...
The point is... We pay a lot for these things, we are monitored and we have control switches all over the place.... when it comes to tweaks, people want
FREEEEDOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And you speak against Freedom?
No, I am speaking against someone who makes a post about nothing using non factual bits of information and uses "FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and thinks that repeating that will bring him a following because its just such a cool word to use with all them purdy exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Dude. Do you HONESTLY believe that? Go to the Ubuntu forums and read the new header at the top of EVERY forum about not posting malicious commands, cos too many people said 'oh, run rm -rf to fix that!' and too many people who had no idea what that did RAN IT. People don't bother to check up on what stuff does before they run it, they just go 'oooo, this will do what I want? Cool!'
Am I missing something or is the Chevron unlock a useless item now? If I have a new WP7 fully updated is there any hope of unlocking it at present? I am too used to Android already so it's going to kill me if this thing can't be hacked and I get put back in the corporate cage.
Please advise on any opportunities.
What phone do you have? If it's an LG, you can use the built in secret MFG app to modify the registry, and enable the developer unlock. (Which is all that Chevron does anyway).
If not... you may be able to downgrade. You can certainly downgrad the LG Optimus 7 by downloading the original ROM and installing using some whacky LG-specific 'modem' software.
I'm not sure what other options you have.

Basically, if you have the latest WP7 updates applied, there is no known method to unlock your device.
Someone will surely figure out how to crack it open again, but right now, there is nothing.
Thanks folks, It's hard as hell going from a Moto Droid that's wide open to this wanna be Apple device. Feels like being put in prison. I'll wait patiently for a fix...well maybe not patiently but wait none-the-less. LOL

Didnt you just claim here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986628that WP7 is a joke? Really, for someone who claims android is so superior how hard can it be to take the WP7 device you dont like back to the store you got it from and get a device you actually like and NOT troll on the WP7 forums?

Someone posting claiming that using WP7 is like being in prison (not to mention creating another thread to bash WP7) doesnt really come across as someone looking for help. Is it really that hard to just move on from an OS you tried and didnt like, is there an unspoken rule that says you have to bash WP7?
Dang, sorry to get you MS fans ruffled. I really didn't mean to honestly. I didn't know that only certain people are entitled to an opinion here.
I got this particular phone because I work in a location where I KNOW for certain gets good reception. I'd have rather had an Android phone but didn't want to chance getting one that didn't have the same reception in that geographical area. Some phones radios are just stronger than others.
It'll do for making calls, texting and checking emails in a pinch. I truly didn't realize that the platform was wrapped up so tightly before I got it. If you've ever had an Android phone you should understand the shock factor after switching.
I still have my Droid and will use it primarily. I'll just keep the WP7 to use like the "may-pop" spare tire on a car until a way to unlock it again comes available.
Edit: And as for my other post that was linked...I am too used to reading in the other forum and not the WP7 section that I kinda forgot where I was. Apologies for that. Some of the issues folks need to know about before purchasing the devices though.
Grow a brain, look into what you are buying next time you purchase anything.
And you didn't get "us MS fanbois ruffled durr", you walked into a forum of people who enjoy a particular device and trash-talked it instead of being mature.

Not true. Make your app authenticate against a server then serve the assets needed by your app. Force your users to update their apps if a new version is available. In fact I would even build an app with all its functionality built in files served remotely every time.
There are more aggressive methods with permissions. Some gullible users will install anything, even apps that read their SMS.
So yes, you can protect your app. The question is: is it worth the time you will spend developing the protection? And even if it is, will you charge just pennies for it? or will you charge $150 for it like this one but nobody will ever buy it?

thanks im forwarding this to the dev ..
Hello, First post, my apologies in advance if this is the wrong place but i have spent some time researching this question but i want to be sure before i brick a $850 phone...i have rooted a few Samsung phones but i think a lot of it was luck and part of it was being able to read instructions (from here, i might add)...i have read enough to believe i can safely root a G955USQU1ACQ9 android 7.0 Kernel 4.4.16-10895874 build NRD90M.G955USQU1AQC9 Knox 2.8
the reason i hesitate to do it myself is the above mentioned cost of this phone and, i saw a "one click root" type thing and used the function that allowed to see if the program can unlock my phone and it says it is not available yet.. i imagine they simply have not updated the program to include my phone but the phone itself is able to be rooted using the methods i see here at XDA for the G955U in general.
so my question is, is this particular phone root-able following the instructions found elsewhere on this site? thank you in advance

From my own personal experience root is blocked in the USA for 2 main reasons.
1.) Corporate contracts - most companies will not allow root access on company phone. In order to steal contracts away from Apple corporations asked to have the phones be locked down tighter. This why even Tmobile locks their bootloaders now. A big part of this is government contracts as well. The USA government is extremely strick on which phone hardware anyone who contracts for them can use.
2.) Samsung Pay - (or tap and pay in general) It will never be allowed to work on a rooted of bootloader unlocked device. And in the USA they are pushing it hard because it is more secure than a physical credit card. Credit card companies lose Billions each year to stolen/lost cards and fraudulent charges. If they force everyone over to a tap and pay solution on your phone they will limit much of that liability.
Honestly I don't think it's a bad thing. The key really is that Google (Android) and OEMs (Samsung) need to continue to roll out the features users want. There should be no need for root anymore. The phone should have all of the features built in, or non root solutions should be found.
To be honest the only thing I miss from root is Viper4Android and even that there are comparable features built in now. I do think Support for older devices should be required as well, but I think Android is addressing that in 8.0 by segmenting out the system from the OEM over lays and drivers, basically allowing Google to push system updates straight to devices.

Awwww poor snowflake need a safe room?
Hello, I am on the official rom. Since rooting Google pay and Samsung pass stopped working, I tried everything. Is there a ROM that could fix Samsung apps (they're nice for biometrics in banking apps)? Also Google pay isn't working which is a pain and a half.
Knox and it's evil micro efuse are at the core firmware/hardware level of these devices. It's a tough order to bypass them.
Some have gotten at least some of the functionality back. Some solutions used for specific apps or on older models may be helpful to you.
Try multiple google searches with XDA in the search parameters.
I tried googling but no luck

There are multiple threads about it here on XDA.
I run across them from time to time. I'm not rooted so they are only a curiosity to me.
Google search is probably the most effective way to find things on XDA. " your search, XDA" usually does the trick. Try different search words and phrases, keep it simple.
what should I try? Knox fix xda?

Rooted With Working Samsung Pay
Is this even possible?
forum.xda-developers.com
from what I understand googel pay gives no buyer protection for anything for any reason with the exception for a very short time refund on apps purchased because it benifts them to lure people into using their payment for apps, but why would anyone be concerned or want to use this over any other cash app?
I don't know about spam pay although I would guess they are the same kinda people. I would root just to rid my phone if these soulless (if that's a word lol) corporations money apps
