Am I missing something or is the Chevron unlock a useless item now? If I have a new WP7 fully updated is there any hope of unlocking it at present? I am too used to Android already so it's going to kill me if this thing can't be hacked and I get put back in the corporate cage.
Please advise on any opportunities.
What phone do you have? If it's an LG, you can use the built in secret MFG app to modify the registry, and enable the developer unlock. (Which is all that Chevron does anyway).
If not... you may be able to downgrade. You can certainly downgrad the LG Optimus 7 by downloading the original ROM and installing using some whacky LG-specific 'modem' software.
I'm not sure what other options you have.

Basically, if you have the latest WP7 updates applied, there is no known method to unlock your device.
Someone will surely figure out how to crack it open again, but right now, there is nothing.
Thanks folks, It's hard as hell going from a Moto Droid that's wide open to this wanna be Apple device. Feels like being put in prison. I'll wait patiently for a fix...well maybe not patiently but wait none-the-less. LOL

Didnt you just claim here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986628that WP7 is a joke? Really, for someone who claims android is so superior how hard can it be to take the WP7 device you dont like back to the store you got it from and get a device you actually like and NOT troll on the WP7 forums?
What a way to sell another OS.
No help, support or anything. WP7 police in full force.

Someone posting claiming that using WP7 is like being in prison (not to mention creating another thread to bash WP7) doesnt really come across as someone looking for help. Is it really that hard to just move on from an OS you tried and didnt like, is there an unspoken rule that says you have to bash WP7?
Dang, sorry to get you MS fans ruffled. I really didn't mean to honestly. I didn't know that only certain people are entitled to an opinion here.
I got this particular phone because I work in a location where I KNOW for certain gets good reception. I'd have rather had an Android phone but didn't want to chance getting one that didn't have the same reception in that geographical area. Some phones radios are just stronger than others.
It'll do for making calls, texting and checking emails in a pinch. I truly didn't realize that the platform was wrapped up so tightly before I got it. If you've ever had an Android phone you should understand the shock factor after switching.
I still have my Droid and will use it primarily. I'll just keep the WP7 to use like the "may-pop" spare tire on a car until a way to unlock it again comes available.
Edit: And as for my other post that was linked...I am too used to reading in the other forum and not the WP7 section that I kinda forgot where I was. Apologies for that. Some of the issues folks need to know about before purchasing the devices though.
Grow a brain, look into what you are buying next time you purchase anything.
And you didn't get "us MS fanbois ruffled durr", you walked into a forum of people who enjoy a particular device and trash-talked it instead of being mature.

I'll be honest, I thought you were 15 or so by your posting style.
Took a while but I got this one to side load apps. So it's still able to be unlocked as of now. I did install the Chevron .cert, used LGM to dev unlock, had to change my USB setting to QC Composite I think. Still looking to see what's out and available for it.
Would love a way to bluetooth files over to it. Or Dropbox.

for some reason i feel the opposite towards this.
I am glad that they put a hardware chip that can bring the phone back to factory default settings. They probably did this because so many people had bricked their phones with no real way to get them back up and running so they had to send them in.... This way it should eliminate that whole process....
why this is good?
It will be cracked, and will give modders room to store custom roms or clockwork recovery on this... or.....
A MOD CHIP!!!! imagine a small mod chip that could enable or disable the chip. You muck up your phone, hit the switch... go back to factory defaults.
Reminds me of the old Playstations where I had to go get them chipped to be modded.
First off it was a pretty good read. Personally I would take this as yet another reason to keep up the awesome work done by the fine programmers here on XDA! Give them something else to "access & modify".
All in all, I never got the feeling of "eff off". But then again, that was just me.
What a whiner. Every day I'm more and more disgusted by some of the people on here. What have you personally done to help HTC aside from maybe buy a phone of theirs? What have they done for you? Oh, they gave you a miracle of modern technology. The ability to have a phone in your pocket which is amazing by itself, forget the fact that it can look up maps, browse the internet, play music and videos, etc.
What about people who don't even have phones?
You're sitting here complaining because of issues rooting a phone which YOU DONT EVEN OWN or intend to buy judging from your comments.
Let me also ask you this: Is the ability to root a phone a feature that is advertised or standard on any devices? Are phone manufactures supposed to be supporting this?

Would you be happy if you bought a car and told you you went allowed to mod it or accessorise it? What someone does with their own device is none of anyone elses business INCLUDING the manufacturer and provider. If I buy a sponge cake I should be able to add whatever decorations and icing I want, If I buy a PC I should be able to install whatever OS and programs I want. Is that so hard to understand?

hard to understand? not at all.
also, not true. you can't legally install apple OS on non-apple hardware. you can't legally alter an iphone. you can't legally mod your car with NOS or any number of other things.
there are still laws, and company policy to take into consideration. your argument is furthered by the fact that android is open source - but what that REALLY means is that Android can be thrown on any manufacturers phone with no limitations - NOT that any phone that has android HAS no limitations.
I WISH the world allowed us to do whatever we wanted without ourselves and our possessions, but that is simply not the case.

OK -
so first, where did I say I was never interested in this phone? If you care to take a look at my posting history you will see I'm desperate for a phone with a keyboard. (ROM issue aside) I did take a look at this phone but the screen is just a little too small for me and I just don't personaly like Android. If this is your ONLY argument, then you know you really have no argument - move along please, nothing to see here.
Second, you seem to be missing the grand picture. You see all those subforums for each phone right? Pay particular attention to the "ROMs" subforums for EACH phone.... delete them. IF I understand this correctly, none of the new phones (assuming they all employ this) will have cooked ROMs. Why do you think most of us are here? Thats right, because HTC ROMs out of the box are crap... cooked ROMs have certainly saved my use of HTC phones and to be honest, are one of the priamary reasons I would buy a HTC phone (and have!).
Third, if you had any idea what I was talking about you would know that this is not so much about the "phone" itself but the very fact that cooked ROMs will no longer be possible. If it was about the phone, I would have posted it in the G2 section.
So in summary, (and this might be hard for you) please, try to focus on the new "feature" of the phone rather than the phone itself. Also, try to stop assuming facts like I was never going to buy this phone and really, if this is the best discussion point you can bring, please use the "unsubscribe" option - do us all a favour.

I don't "feel" it is illegal. I don't believe it is wrong - but they have the legal right to tell me it is. that doesn't mean i won't do it anyway - I just don't lie to myself and say it is allowed... even if I believe that it should be.
there's a difference between recognizing the law and following it. I'm not saying I don't agree, that it sucks that they will lock out ROMs. BUT - I've got my Evo and it will last me for years, so i really don't care.
it's called reality. I'm not arguing that your opinion is wrong - i'm highlighting that it is just your opinion, and in this world they don't mean much.

Found this interesting Article on Fudzilla regarding how Android could be killed off by the suppliers of the phones. Figured I would share
http://www.fudzilla.com/mobiles/item/21611-android-could-be-killed-off-by-suppliers
Nice read but those publishers are idiots. The only way android will be killed of is if apple takes over the world and burns down google
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I pretty much summed up the article that if, Google doesn't take tighter control of how the suppliers are updating the phones, and if Google themselves do not ease up on releasing updates, then it might drive people away from Android phones due to the lack of support.
Twoddle.
At last report (that I know of), 300,000 people a day were activating new Android phones. I'm gonna guess here, but I reckon about 90% of those people don't give a monkeys about updated ROMs and new features. They don't understand enough about their phones to care. (Not an insult - just a statement.)
They'll keep their phone for the next 12/18/24 months and then get a nice new shiny one with the same OS cos it'll remember their contacts and they can download the same apps again.
Anyone that's in the other 10% know exactly how to modify the phone to suit their needs, and will only buy another phone because of the hardware. They know full well they can put whatever OS and apps on there they want.
For every bunch of people that leave Android to go iPhone, there'll be an equally sized bunch of people that leave iPhone to go Android. Change the OS names in that last sentence for other OSs to complete the story.
Analysts don't know squat. They're paid to make predictions that are less founded in reality than astrology. Besides, you can't be an analyst without anal.

A majority of customers don't care about updating the firmware of the phone. If it works, they won't complain. If it doesn't work, they'll bring it back for a warranty repair or simply get a new phone.

Anyhow- Android won't be killed. That's like when they said Linux was to be killed off in the early 2000's because Windows machines were supplied with an X amount of memory (about a 100mb extra than those running a distro)
Won't happen I mean come on what you think is the alternative? They want to pay the license? What happens if upgrade comes? who you think will pick up RIM? lol they are dead who else iOS? Sorry thats for iPanzy and who use that come on now, only other alternative is WM.
Also who wants to fight big Google? You think they will let it go easy? They can buy the ****ing company out and change the decision if they cared to just to send single message. Also then you have the user who can and is doing what they want hence you are on XDA? F the carrier support thats like saying you are bound to software hence your PC?
But the biggest problem with mobile world is the hardware which is not actually openly shared as opposed to computing world, where one can actually code the driver for support. BTW voddles your last sentence didn't make sense what so ever take it from someone who been using Slackware since it was created.
I for myself isn't that impressed of Android anymore.
Having used an X10 Mini since May 2010 (now 2.1 and some extra updates)
Wanted the Mini for the Android Hype, Spotify music streaming and smallness.
Love the phone still but getting more and more angered of lack of decent software/apps
Hate all the Android keyboards(not because of it's tiny on a 2.6" screen) but the lack of arrow keys and stupidity behavior (like unable to mark text and enter new).
Search function is limited too (In Market and others) It's impossible to editing an old search, you have to enter everything again.
Also getting more and more irritated on the Google in general.
Wanna have a new non Win, IOS, Bada, Android or Nokia stuff. Phone OS. Now.
Will not follow your guys inte 2.2 or 2.3
Journalism just seems to go down the toilet in the highly competitive virtual world of the internet.
"While HTC appears to be ahead of the game at getting new updates to uses, some outfits, particularly Motorola are developing a jolly bad name for themselves. You could upgrade yourself but he problem is getting your paws on unlocked boot loaders. Motorola's upcoming phones have locked bootloaders."
Locked bootloaders have nothing to do with official updates.
"However it looks to us like Google is going to need to put its foot down fast before the suppliers start killing off its operating system. The last thing people want is to get an Android phone and find it can't do something that has been advertised because some phone maker could not be bothered upgrading."
Put its foot down on a free OS? Ads go out advertising that all Android phones support roms? That all Android phone are upgradeable to the latest, greatest Android OS?
The whole article looks to be written by someone attempting to be sensational but really has no clue.
I remember when Android was new and you had all these manufacturers "skinning" Android. I was worried that a user may confuse a skin with the primary OS and incorrectly give credit or blame to that skin. People seem to love Sense UI and hate Motoblur. You impression of Android could vary depending on if you used an HTC vs a Motorola. That clearly did not happen.

Everything said here is somewhat true and somewhat false. We all have our opinions, we all have different expectations from our phones...
What i don't understand is, and i say this from a developer perspective, why would any mobile device manufacturer, like Sony, lock out their devices? Same goes for Apple etc etc
I mean, i think far more ppl would actually buy their products if they know that they have a open device and that it can run on all carriers. I mean, i actually bought my 1st iPhone just because of the fact that someone made an unlock tool so u could use it outside of AT&T networks...
As for the OS side, Android wont die ofc, and i believe its a good thing that Google publishes updates to it so fast. This means they are really dedicated to the project and that they really care for developers so they can make much better apps, with more features and capabilities.

I have to somewhat agree with you about the virtual keyboard. Now coming from HD2 which has the best stock keyboard I have ever seen. The arrow key and able to select via drag is best when you typing but on AOSP the whole idea is retarded. I can still type every fast but not fast as I once was on HD2 then again where is that whole 4.3" out there.

I personally am always going to be sticking with HTC. They usually update most of there phones and even if they dont someone will have rooted it and just made a <insert android version here> rom. Plus even if no one can root it i still love Htc Sense and it looks 100x better than Motoblur or whatever Sony uses.

Hi long time no post
For the last few years I have been waiting patiently for a predecessor to the xda exec , none arrived so I decided to go for the new 7 pro as it seemed to be the closest I will ever get .
It arrived and I was absolutely chuffed HTC have outdone thierself. I have had it for less than a week and I am well miffed with it already . HTC and Microsoft haven't seemed to of talked with each other over this phone . My guess is this is exactly the same rom as the hd7 only a small amount of apps rotate when the keyboard is slid out basically text and web . Kind of pointless keyboard really .
I came to terms with this and decided not a problem then my next snag was I went out of signal and would not reaquire on its own . I turned on and off airplane mode ,it didn't make a difference. I removed the battery and replaced and got 3 bars straight away , I haven't had this problem since a Nokia 8210 !
The final straw was Monday I changed to nightshift so I set my alarm to wake me up guess what it didn't and i was late. to make it worse it completely muted my phone aswell. The cure was yet again removal and refit of battery. I thought maybe it was me so I tried again with back up this time my HTC diamond 6.5.1rev and It did the same again no sound only vibrate and muted phone again. out came the battery again.
I have decided to go iPhone which does miff me off as i have waited for Microsoft all this time when i should of switched right at the beginning .
My outcome of the whole ordeal is the phone itself is awesome.beats the iPhone hands down ,i am actually in love with it it is that good (except speaker in underside?) but Iam fed up with being a windows guinea pig
Also I am very disappointed with marketplace , I find it hard to beleive that there is zero Sat nav software available . I have always stuck to windows purely for that reason . The I phone has for me in the UK a free Prog called navfree and it ain't far desimilar to TomTom. What does market place have to offer no half decent freebies at all

You can't be coming here criticising MS, the uber microites will be after you for blasphemy.....
we've gotten to a point of not really caring i think... this person has their point of view, that's fine. though it would of been better for him/her to do their homework before buying the device, but aye, i'm sure there is also cooling off period.
at the end of the day, if they're not happy with it, that's fine, swap it up for something you'll like and hopefully when that contract is up, Windows Phone will be at a point where it does meet your needs and you return. If not, all good, enjoy whatever phone you pick up.
Enough said?

Yep, no need to say anymore really, he tried it, didnt like it and moved on. Happens all the time and as mentioned, maybe one day WP7 will meet his needs, if not enjoy whatever does meet your needs.

In consideration of a qwerty keyboard, whats better?
I'd like to point out to the OP that the iPhone Appstore has been in existance for over 3 years... the WP7 marketplace has been available for only 4+ months...
You gotta give the developers some time to develop these good apps.
Be patient... As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day!

I think that the Nokia alliance will greatly help with Navigation and Marketplace issues overseas as Nokia already has a great variety of licenses and products over there that Microsoft will not utilize.

Your presence and constant sarcastic attitude are honestly making this forum so much less enjoyable for me, and I'm sure others as well... Jesus Christ, we get it, you don't like the phone, or the OS... You don't need to get into EVERY TOPIC and say it... or mock those who do like it...

My DVP is amazing, be sure to get the 8 gig though and upgrade it up to 32 gigs as you see fit. The 16 gig is known to have issues though it seems to be SD card related. The quantum is good though the screens a bit small for my taste (I like 3.8+ inch screens) LG does have the best apps though.

Whats on the market place has little to do with Microsoft, please direct all moans to the likes of tomtom and garmin etc for not pulling their fingers out, they have had plenty of time and MS is usually very good for offering assistance on such matters.
Pitty you didnt have much luck with that, the OS is great, new hardware will be on the way in due course so hopefully things will get sorted soon, i dont suppose you tried another one did you? not beyond the realm of posibility that your device was in some way buggered.

the xda people should make a program that computer morons, like myself, can download and plug our phones in and it just takes over and deletes bloatware then unlocks our phones and puts cool stuff on our phones.
i got shafted by a mobile carrier salesman who told me they would unlock my phone then after buying it, i called and they told me i have to wait til july before they would give me the unlock code. im not a computer pro so basically i got stuck with a phone that doesnt work in china. i specifically asked the salesman at time of purchase in december, " will they give me the code in march?" and he said yes. i also told him i was only buying it so i could use it in usa and china.
i love and trust this site. it is just too difficult for a computer moron like myself. people would pay good money to just be able to click on a button and let a program do its magic.
maybe this is a stupid idea, maybe it is a good idea. i dont know. i do know i would have gladly paid 25% of the phone price to just click a button and have a phone that isnt full of apps i dont want and works according to the salesman's promise.
is this idea any good?
ya we could do that, and then we could build a machine to cure cancer and aids! the sky is the limit!

If you want something like this you should buy an iPhone. This is a phone for rich people that don't now anything and just want it works. And if they broke something, they will just get a new one.
well i did get the phone unlocked and it was good i had to learn to do things myself. i am glad i dont have an iphone and glad that there isnt a program to do everything because it gives us the chance to choose what we want and to learn what we need. this site is great for learning that. thanks for your replies.

But you will have to wait until July in a couple years for that one. And only on the condition that the world ends in 2012.
Unfortunately it's basically impossible to build a phone that's everything to everyone. That's why you can narrow it down with platform choices. If you want it to work well out of the box and don't want to change anything yourself, go with iPhone, if you want to be able to personalize, go with Android.
Also, it should seem obvious, but never take a salesmans word for anything important to you - get it in writing. Too many either don't know what they're talking about, or are prepared to say anything to make the sale.

so true. i should have known better about salesmen in general. however, i didnt think at&t would leave me hanging to such a degree. they could have given me the code but that would make a customer happy and that is not their policy (happy customers.) thank goodness for xda members and their willingness to help.
So, here's my problem:
I bought a Blu Life One X3 late last year since it was on sale for $150 ($100 lower than the current MSRP).
Since it was still a new release, I thought that the modders would come after it eventually, so I just waited it out.
Many months later, there has been little to no word about any sort of root method, it seems like the Life One X3 turned out to be very unpopular.
So far, I have been able to get it into the OEM unlock screen using adb, prompting a press of either of the volume buttons to confirm unlock, only that the volume up button won't do anything, and the volume down just cancels the process.
Any help at all?
Big thanks!
Ferchito
Hi Xiione,
I bought a couple of X3s recently and I was also expecting some development for them already but I only found your thread.
I think there are chances to root the X3 and install customs rooms since it has the same chipset as the BLU Vivo 5 (Chipset Mediatek MT6753, CPU Octa-core 1.3 GHz) and the Vivo 5 has extensive coverage and even kernel sources available. Vivo 5 doesn't have a fingerprint sensor but the BLU Life One X2 Mini has one that I'd be willing to bet is the same as the X3, so drivers may work for it too. This is the route I will follow but I'm only getting started with this stuff so it will probably take a few weeks to get some results.
Hopefully others will join
Cheers
Hey dude!
Glad to see at least one other living human that bought the same phone... good to hear that there might be some hope for this poor device after all.
I'm not so experienced in this area, so there is only so much I can achieve at the moment. I'm looking forward to hearing back from you if any developments arise, I'll do my best to dig around for a solution.

You will not find a one click root for that device. The problem is Blu is still recovery from their security scandal. So most people won't buy their devices.
funny thing is... i don't really consider rooting devices as necessary as it once was (for me). But still... it bugs me to no end i can't get this phone rooted.
I'm having the same problem as the OP.. i'm able to get into fastboot mode, but oem unlock option leads to a dead volume up button which leaves me nowhere. it really is to bad there's so little interest in BLU. they make decent phones at great prices, imo. but i also know they make it very difficult for developers as well.. difficult to get source and such. ...

They are unpopular due to the security issues the company has faced. Not to mention they are just rebranded chinese devices. Which is why sourse is hard to get for them as they dont really make the devices.

I understand the security concerns. However, it's inconceivable that they would not have source, regardless of where the phones come from. If they released the code, more secure versions of the OS could be made available.

It's very common with rebranded Chinese phones. Micromax (and oem in India) had the same issue. The main issue is the oem doesn't release it as it's not required in China. And no it couldn't. The kernel source is only a small part of it.
Best bet is to be more selective with your next device purchase

I do. I'll be at your preschool later today after nap time so if your a good boy you might get to see it. If you can stay awake passed the puppet show.
Look here is the bottom line. You bought a joke of a device. Because you didn't do research. Now you have malware as well as it reporting to Chinese servers all your private info (you can look it up if you want.)
But to save you asking mommy for internet time

So good luck with that. I hope you learn before another year goes by.

Well to be honest from your pic of devices 2 things are clear.
1. My shows would be above your station in life.
2. You couldn't afford my shows.
Look you were told all the help you are gonna get over the past year. And yet you keep trying. You know that's the text book definition of of insanity right?
Even if you managed to find the source guess what. Your bootloader is locked and there is no unlock. So if with the code You can do nothing. Not like you would be able to understand it even if you got it I fear.
Just accept that you messed up and move on. We all do it. It's called growing up.
Oh and next time you need help. Mugjt try a support site and not a developers site. But that might be above your head.

That is a BS excuse. With the internet you can have any device you want. Just save up for it. Its that simple. As for the condescension, you are ready far to much into things. You can get great devices for really cheap these days. I mean even almost good devices like Xiaomi are really cheap.
I was here long before you and ill be here modding devices and building the os for my device long after you are gone.
Let me explain. What happens to you and your device I really couldnt care less about nor does anyone here. It is your problem. Watch the Video if you are confused.
