Rooted Honor 8 Nougat and EMUI 5 OTA Update Prerequisites - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I currently have a rooted Honor 8 FRD-L04 with TWRP installed, and I'm just wondering how I should prepare for the Nougat Update. I heard that I need to revert to Stock Recovery, and I'm wondering if Huawei's own erecovery can do that. Also, will using erecovery or the normal .img method wipe my phone data? I have unrooted using SuperSU or XDA (I don't remember which one). Is there anything else I should know about? Thanks!

What? SuperSU has a inbuilt unroot feature... Why not using it?

The only problem with unrooting with SuperSU is it will most likely Fail.
This is because SuperSU actually patches the boot.img when you flash it in TWRP and this can't be undone
to fully unroot this phone you'll need to fastboot flash boot.img and stock recovery.img
I find it easier to just use Huawei Backup and dload flash back to B162
and then restore my backup
If your already on the Nougat beta you'll need to do 2 flashes
first flash is the rollback and the second flash will return you too b162

Yes I know but he said that he successfully unrooted it with SuperSU, so no problem there...

I unrooted and went back to stock recovery simply by doing a FULL OTA update. It completely blew away TWRP and rooted ROM when I did it.

So just to clarify, I have a 6045I factory global unlocked from Amazon, It has never been rooted, bootloader unlocked, nothing. So would I place on SD and apply update through stock recovery, or is there a different method? Really just want root for adaway and xposed. TWRP would be nice, but not necessary. Just don't want a new paperweight. Thanks!
Can i install twrp to flash thid or stock is fine?
You can try windroid toolkit v3.1.
First u have to unlock bootloader then to flash recovery and supersu .
For me it is not recognising my phone hope u will get success.

For me it got downloaded but showing device either offline or unauthorized
I'd run a full virus /malware scan.... I use 360 Security on mobile devices and PC's. It, along with SUPERAntiSpyware has served me well.

Just install the TWRP 3.0 in android development (it has instructions in the thread) and then you can flash the supersu mentioned.

Well the obvious choices are:
1) Use mobile Q to restore to 5.0.2...unlock bootloader, install twrp....upgrade to marshmallow using the modified update.zip that doesn't wipe recovery and finally root using the file mentioned.
or
2) Live with it as it is until someone figures out how to restore fastboot which will probably still require downgrading.

That's the problem. This phone is totally stock with nothing done but the update. I literally charged it, turned it on and 20 minutes later 6.0.1 was nagging for install, which I did. There is now the OEM unlock switch in developing options, but I don't know where to start, or flash.

You must go back to 5.0 to install and then update it because in 6.0.1 update Removes Fastboot commands so you can't install it twrp....
I have a problem with rooting 6039Y on rom 6.0.1 by persona78. Stock rom 5.0.2 and root working fine. When i flash via TWRP after the update to MM i get this message:
-Cheking patch status
---Already patched, attempting to find stock backup
---Stock restore failed, attempting ramdisk restore
---Ramdisk restore failed, aborting
This solution - echo SYSTEMLESS=true >> /data/.supersu - not working.
Phone was simlock removed via furiousgold, maybe this is a problem?

update with a rooted Mate 8

I am on rooted stock B331 and I just received an update to B356 (492 MB). If I acceot the OTA will the bootloader get locked? I know I will most likely loose root and twrp. I'd like to updated but not get locked again. Any advice?
Or should I flash the image file in TWRP along with insecure boot?
If anybody has gone this route please advice. Thanks
huh? thats new! here i thought that once u unlock bootloader and root u dont receive ota updates anymore! how is that possible?!
in any case, whats the big deal about bootloader getting locked? u just unlock it again using your code via fastboot, no problem then flash twrp and supersu, done!

Yeah, I know it is wierd. My bootloader is unlocked, I'm rooted and have twrp installed and received the B356 OTA this morning.
I was hopping to dirty flash so I don't have to go through all the setup process again
true, unlocking BL again would mean that your phone would be reset...

You can still do OTA'S with an unlocked bootloader. You should be able to OTA but it may remove root or fail in the process because of root. I always recommend backing up the stock rom in TWRP so you can always go back to it to take an OTA. Fastboot flash the stock rom you're on and the stock recovery then boot up and take the OTA then fastboot flash twrp again.
I have also received the notification for b357 and I am on stock rooted b356...sounds fishy, I am not updating

I'd love it if anybody could make a flashable zip rooted B356 or 357 rom to be safe.

Safe to take OTA when rooted?

Is it safe to take OTA (B197) if I'm rooted with magisk and got twrp installed? Is it possible at all?

No.
TWRP in most cases doesn't able to install stock ROMs (OTA and FullOTA). Additionally old TWRP deletes partitions before install, so you can get some functional doesn't work.
If you made some changes in system partition OTA will not install, as it compares and requires previous unchanged version of files to apply new changes. No file - can't install.
OK.
Maybe FullOTA form FF is safe to install using TWRP?

No. As I told, TWRP doesn't know how install stock ROMs contain update.app file.
Safe, yes. If it wants to install.
But you'll be bootloader locked and unrooted when finished. So OTA or FullOTA doesn't matter if you want to stay rooted, you'll have to unlock bootloader again and root.

Help - FRD-L09, B398 update - Can I root with SuperSU 2.82 ?

Hey guys
My question is in the title... I am running B398 last update, on FRD-L09. My bootloader is unlocked. I am wondering if I can just flash official SuperSU 2.82 with ADB, or if I need a modded SuperSU to get the root. Thanks in advance (and sorry for my bad english)
i've been using magisk 14.5 stock and root works, i don't know about supersu on B398. i'd say just try magisk.

By the way I have a question please... I upgraded my Honor 8 from B360 to B398 using RedLotus. On my settings, my EMUI version is 5.0.1, but the build number still B360. Do you know why ? :/

FRD-L09? did you flash the modded stock recovery? that sounds like EMUI didn't want to install it or the package was corrupted for B398.

Thanks for the reply. It's an original FRD-L09, not rebranded or anything. I flashed the modded stock recovery, i followed all the steps. The only strange thing i see : you know when you flash a rom with HiSuite using RedLotus method, during flash there is a RedLotus window with details of the operations. On this window, at the end of the flash, i saw it only flashed the update.zip, and not the vendor file update_full_FRD-L09_hw_eu.zip. I see only the name of update.zip in the RedLotus window. Is that normal ?
(Again, sorry for my bad english)

Can someone provide zip update package so that i can update in twrp??
You have to remove majisk
Relock boot
Then you will receive official update
Then unlock and reinstall majisk

There is no need to relock.
I didnt whe 110 came out and it still updated... rooted with Magisk as well
@any_thing
Check the ROMs/Kernels/Recoveries section, there's a modified stock recovery that allows for updating w/o relocking the Bootloader.*
Once complete, put TWRP back & root, you will not lose any data/apps/etc...... as you would by simply relocking your Bootloader....
* YMMV,this modified recovery may not be compatible w/your model.

I have the BKL-L04 model & got an update notice earlier today:
While on stock rooted with TWRP & Magisk, the update downloaded & attempted to install, but,it failed.
So,just flash the stock recovery for your model & take the update w/o relocking your bootloader.
You will not lose any data from switching recoveries,at least on this phone.
(If you want to unroot 1st,that's fine, but, not necessary, flashing the modified stock recovery image unroots your phone anyway.)
After taking the update, flash the TWRP & Magisk (& Magisk Manager App,if it disappeared) as you did previously.
Just posting what worked for me,& in no way are my experiences/usage intended to contradict posts/suggestions from others, especially if they have the exact same model of phone as yours.
Hope this helps. :good:

PS my bootloader is unlocked... do I need lock it to get an update? and how to lock it?
