Hey, I have a couple of quick questions. About 4 months ago I came over to Android from several years on iOS (all Jailbroken & heavily modded devices). I was up for contract renewal with AT&T, and I am still grandfathered in on the old Unlimited Data plan. At the time all I knew about Android, is that I liked how much better it had gotten with Jellybean and that I thought I wanted to give Android a try. At the time I was under the impression that Android was much more open & customizable, and easier to work with. AT&T changed that experience for me. I ended up going with a red Samsung Galaxy S4 because I like the hardware, thinking that if I didn't like the Samsung interface, I could just flash Vanilla Android from Google.......as everybody knows now, not the case. I really like Android and prefer the Vanilla experience to Samsung's Touchwiz interface. their Knox security (and Knox 2.0 coming soon), and the fact that it is not optional has left a very bad taste in my mouth, in addition to the locked bootloader on the GS4. I have also been playing around with Android Studio and am looking at getting into some Android development. So for me, it's time to jump ship and move to the much more user-friendly (mod friendly) Nexus 5.
So for anybody who has come over to the Nexus 5 from another phone, what issues did you run into switching over?
From what I've read, both use a micro sim, so I should be able to just put my sim in the Nexus 5 and go, right?
I currently have root on the GS4 and backup all my stuff to Google drive with Titanium Backup. Theoretically, I should be able to install Titanium backup on the Nexus and restore my apps & app data, correct?
Anything else I should be aware of? I need to make as smooth of a transition as possible. GS4 is then getting restored to factory and is getting sold to pay for a good chunk of the Nexus 5.
I also plan to go with the 32 GB Nexus 5 since there is no SD card slot. Advice on this decision? Thanks for any information and suggestions. I look forward to soon becoming a Nexus 5 owner and member of this forum community.
-Jeremy
Get the 32. Be careful not to restore system data. Insert sim and go.

Received the Sony 16gb Micro Flash Drive today and yes when i just plug it in i get no mount options of course.
However when in TWRP it allows me to mount "USB OTG" to do what i bought the drive for witch is Backups.
Edit: tested above USB flash drive with "StickMount Pro" and works great.

That looks cool. Nexus 5 came in this last Friday, and my Spigen SlimArmor case & Nilkin Tempered glass protector came Monday. Over the weekend I was able to get the bootloader unlocked and got the phone rooted. So much easier on the Nexus. Can't get much easier than:
"adb bootloader unlock"
I got my S4 back to stock and getting ready to list it on Swappa.
I had one other question regarding the IMEI. You mention calling AT&T to update the IMEI, but I've done some reading and it's my understanding that once you make some calls from the new device after moving your SIM over to it, the IMEI is automatically updated in AT&T's system within 48 hrs. Can anyone here confirm this? Anything else I need to do? Everything is working great on the Nexus 5.
Thanks. I already love this phone!

Can not confirm the auto IMEI switch for you but if there is truth to what you mention than i would call to have it switched sooner than the 48 hour auto period .
Bad ass phone isn't it?

You don't have to switch anything over. I have a note 2 and nexus 5 and switch the Sim out all the time to use either phone. I never called for anything.

I have until tomorrow to return my AT&T Note Edge. I like the phone, but I miss Titanium backup and free hotspot tethering from my original Note. I read somewhere that AT&T locked the bootloader on the Note 3 as well. Did they ever get root for the Note 3 on AT&T? Will we get it eventually for the Note 4 and the Edge?

Just go to the note 3 forum and look and see if they have root for AT&T variant. As for the Note 4 and Edge, there is root they're just letting the bounty get up. The last sentence was a joke, how is anyone suppose to know if they'll get it?
Ok, they do have root for the N3. They didn't get it till mid-April, though. But if they get root for the N4, would it also apply to the Edge? If not, I would worry that the Edge might get left out due to fewer users.

That's exactly what I'm wondering about. I love the edge though and my next choice would be the Note 4 which is for now just as root less but as you pointed out it might get more love.
Exactly. Here's another thought...what's to stop someone from creating an Edge-style overlay for the Note 4? I could save $100, keep the Edge functionality, and possibly get more ROMs. I'm hoping that root and ROMs will be almost identical for the Note 4 and the Edge.

Go over to the AT&T Note 4 general section to keep up with root progression. No root for either of the 2 devices yet but they've been hammering away at it. Most work being done for note 4. Once it's done, should be able to port over.
all of a sudden I can't get into the gear apps anymore tonight and this error comes up. anyone else see this?

so i did factory resets, i un-rooted etc, and it's still doing it. i'm pairing it to my TAB S now to see if it'll work there...
sucks bc now i can't download apps at all.
wellp, it works on my Tab S and i can get into the store no problem, but it seems like my Note 4 is the issue, which makes ABSOLUTELY no sense because for 2 full days it's been working and i've been downloading apps, and now all of a sudden it decided that the Note 4 isn't compatible. WTF.
same here my friend Just started doing it !! With you describing the same issue I believe this is a Samsung issue and not something we have done.
whats up guys!! just solved the problem!! i was having the same issue. it has something to do with the security updates.
so to fix it go to application manager and find security policy updates under the ALL tab. and unistall updates. this will then let you back into the gear app store :good:
Same issue but no security policy updates app.
I have the same issue. Was working fine this morning and my device isn't supported now. :/ I also don't have a security policy updates app in application manager.
It fixed itself.
It works now.
I'm so mad I wiped my device and unrooted then rooted again lmfao. now I'm on tizenmod 3.0 though and the store works. nice. thanks for the heads up guys!

btw, i didn't have to do anything for security updates. I always decline those on my note 4 anyway. it just worked today. hmm

I have a Note 4 (US version) and am having no problems. Sounds like something changed in your setup. Did something change your build.prop file setting ro.product.model? Sometimes people change that. Running any type of app or xposed module that spoofs other apps?

NOTHING changed in my setup and some days it works, some it doesn't and I get the dreaded message. Samsung really needs to get their sh!t together or else they will soon find the answer to the question "why Apple is MUCH better in terms of user experience".
it's a Samsung server side issue. probably the same reason so many apps weren't available on the note 4 but were on every other device like s5 and note edge lol

I've been stuck on the note 4 for Verizon without full root after 10 months. Will this ever get root and unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my SM-N910V
Ummm... are you referring to your Note 4 or the new Note 5? People only just started receiving them yesterday (myself included), so it'll take time for any root/unlocking stuff to come about if it'll be possible.
Talking about the note 5. Just wondering if anyone heard of Verizon locking it down in a similar fashion.
Sent from my SM-N910V
Honestly, with Samsung and Verizon...just assume that root will never be available. It likely won't, but if it is..it's just a bonus.
Regardless, it's way too early to tell.
If root is important to you, DON'T BUY A PHONE UNTIL ROOT IS ALREADY AVAILABLE.
EVER.
These days root is not guaranteed. And in some cases even if you get 'root', you can't write to the system partition without an unlocked bootloader to change out the kernel, severely gimping what many want root for on the first place.

Very true. I purchased the Note 5 because I like the phone. Root would be nice but it won't break my heart if it doesn't come. The S6 had root but it didn't last long if you like to stay up to date on the software. Samsung and Verizon locked these phones up pretty tight where even just flashing the modem will cause you to have to flash the whole update and loose root. I'm not holding my breath for root.
Probably Yes in the future but not right away. So i decided to talk to a Samsung customer service representative to ask weather the bootloader would be unlocked on Verizon note 5. It took me 20 whole minutes just to find that out bumped into a such a stupid representative on the live chat

Exactly! I guess someone was brave enough to ask... I'd give it about 6 months until root comes out. In the keantime, this phone is pretty awesome.

From what I read if rooted Knox 5 will lock the phone down...on Verizon and att only. Root looked to be done already on other carriers. Something in Knox 5 called "Root of trust"

I am ignorant on this, but if ALL the Knox software is disabled how could Knox be tripped? Anything related it Knox, I have disabled using Debloater. I am a Windows guy, and when a service is disabled it is not running but the software is still present. Wouldn't it be the same on android and Verizon/Samsung bastardization of android? Baby steps I know, but wouldn't that also leave the possibility of Root more likely then knowing Knox wont screw the phone?
The last time I used root was on the s3 and that was about it. Note 5 not needed. Even the bloatware doesnt bother me. Disabled/uninstall most of them. Phone is smooth as butter, for now at least.

You took the words right out of my mouth!!! Mine has been running flawlessly since day 1! The only way I would give it up is if i could go back to my note 4 as well. I just hope they let us keep them until the S8 comes out (Feb. of next year) or something...at this point I don't want to trade it in to go backwards technology wise and I hate Apple so yeah...what do we do?
Both our original, and replacements have run without heating up either. The only reply I got from Samsung is to stop using the phone, and return it for a replacement or refund. Not interested in changing phones either. I did notice the new phones said SDI SDI again when I checked the battery type (a forum here said those were the bad phones), but after software, prl, profile updates the type now says BATTERY.
