Dueling Grandpas: Android G1 vs iPhone 2g (One users experience)

I have had a G1 from the day it came out. (I actually have TWO G1's due to a weird twist of fate.) I bought it mainly because I was annoyed that iPhones had no physical keyboard. I like Apple products as a rule (I'm typing this from my MacBook), but many of the limitations of the iPhone were dealbreakers (or so I thought). The lack of MMS, and the lack of a keyboard... not to mention the lack of multitasking, swappable memory or batteries were a turn off to me. In fact I've even been an iPhone hater for some time now, after briefly using a locked and un-jailbroken 2g. HOWEVER, recently I picked up a gently used iPhone 2g for $50 bucks, and for the past week have been using it as my main phone. Sadly, my loyalty to Android has been wavering as a result. This is a comparison of the old obsolete hardware that started it all.

Screens:
First off, the iPhone 2g screen is bigger and better. There's really no avoiding this. It's brighter than the G1 and more responsive. The whole unit feels sturdier due to the solid engineering. I remember when I got the G1 it felt this solid for about two days. Then came the annoying squeak and the inevitable loss of the micro-usb cover. The iPhone 2G's screen looks incredibly sharp when compared to the G1, even on the brightest and dimmest settings.
Operating System:
I love Android. It's so open. The market is full of stuff that Apple would never allow. That being said, both of these phones have been out for so long that developers have had ample time to try and make up for any shortcomings the OS's may have. My G1 is rooted and tricked out. I'm maxing out the processor speed but the OS still lags. Even on vanilla 1.6 it lags. The only time I ever recall my G1 being more snappy was when Cupcake came out. The iPhone 2g is much faster and more responsive than my G1. I thought this was due to multitasking, but my 2g is jailbroken and multitasking fine. I even got MMS working on it! A small victory for something that should have been included in the first place, but a victory none the less. If I had known changing the wallpaper, and MMS, and multitasking could be implemented so easily and definitively then I wouldn't have used those as deterrents. And now that jailbreaking is so prevalent and even legal you can hardly mention those things. Furthermore, all of these things are actually condoned by Apple on their current flagship, which means they're at least listening to the consumers. The fact that the iPhone 2g is OLDER and yet still runs smoother than Android is telling. The hardware is just better at running the OS. You could claim that iPhone has had more time to smooth out the kinks in the 2g, but after almost 2 years my G1 has kinks aplenty, and Google has all but abandoned the aging hardware. Fragmentation has caused carriers and hardware manufacturers to take eons to update individual devices or even leave some completely abandoned. Meanwhile the 2G got an updated a few weeks ago (trivial as it may be). I've gotten so used to the sluggish G1, that while i'm using my iPhone 2g I think to myself, "Damn, how could the 3GS and iPhone 4 be even faster!" Oh, and here's a telling example of the functionality of the OS's: I use the Android lock screen on my iPhone because it's far superior to the iOS lockscreen. Please tell my why on iPhone 2g the Android lock screen is smoother than on the G1! I also think the Palm Pre inspired fast app switching app ProSwitcher (when paired with Backgrounder) makes multitasking on the iPhone BETTER than multitasking on Android or even iOS4. Essentially I have my favorite features from Android and the WebOS cloned right on my iPhone. No other mobile OS out now has this type of genuine customization. This stuff doesn't feel like a hack or mod.
​Battery:
Overclocked or not, my G1 has always struggled with horrible battery life. In fact I've always had bad battery life on both of my G1's. I have so many G1 chargers its ridiculous. Three at home, one in the car and two at work! Why? because if I need to use GPS on my G1 I know my battery will dwindle to 30% in about an 45 minutes, especially on a sunny day when I need some backlighting. I've become a master of stretching the G1 battery to the limit, but mainly at my inconvenience. The iPhone 2g battery is better. Much better. It charges faster and lasts longer so I really don't NEED to have the swapability. Somewhere along the line we got so caught up on the convenience of having the ability to replace a dead battery, we forgot that batteries dying too quickly was actually the inconvenience. My iphone with HEAVY use can last 24 hours. My G1 with moderate use can last 14 if I'm lucky.
Text Input:
I'll give this one to the G1. The Gmail client and the texting on the G1 is fantastic, largely due to the physical keyboard. I had a texting speed contest with a girl at my job and I smoked her ass on my G1. That being said, the iPhone's virtual keyboard is WAY better than on Android. I was even typing on a Droid X the other day and was saddened that the keyboard was still less enjoyable than on the iPhone 2g. I do hate that the iPhone keyboard never seems to want to disappear once you enter a textbox, but other than that it's great. I have used every available Android keyboard from Swype to Swift, and while fast, they still feel less accurate and less responsive than the iPhone VK.
Games:
I use Nesoid (NES Emulator) on my G1, which essentially makes the gaming experience leaps and bounds beyond the iPhone. (iPhone roms/emulators suck because, well, you need buttons.) But I'll be damned if I don't love me some Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds! I think both platforms have a long way to go before people stop considering more robust mobile gaming like the PSP and Nintendo DS, but they're definitely on the right track. With the addition of Flash in Froyo, we may see Android pull far ahead in this category. Can't wait to find out.
​Web Browsing:
Speaking of Froyo, I hear web browsing is fantastic on it. But on the G1 browsing sucks. In fact it's gotten WORSE since the OS has been updated. I used to be able to have 3 browser tabs loading simultaneously and remain loaded after leaving the browser (pre cupcake). So I could open Facebook, Twitter, and Android Community all at once and play a game while they loaded. Awesome! NOW every time I load another tab it just sits there until I go to view it. And God forbid I leave the browser. Then I have to wait for the homescreen to render (which is getting ridiculous), and when I re-enter the browser all the pages automatically refresh, ugh. The iPhone 2g's browser is better in every way to the G1's. Faster, smoother, and easier tab manipulation. I'm eager to see if RIM or Android can actually surpass this functionality, as they claim.
Jailbreaking/Rooting:
On the G1 rooting has given me tethering, screenshot capabilities, overclocking, and more customization options. On the iPhone 2g I have gained even MORE customization options via themes and different settings options. Still, the lack of widgets is a huge hole in the OS. I have also gained MMS, multitasking, and the fantastic SBSettings which is kind of like Bar Control for Android but better. Not to mention access to Cydia and Installous for my app pirating needs. Even though the Android community is very active and innovative, the iPhone dev community is equally ambitious and have had more time to work on their hacks and mods. iOS is no longer the cripplingly locked place it used to be.
Wrap Up:
In short, both OS's have come far, but after using Android at length and switching to iOS for a few weeks I have come to realize that the iPhone 2g pretty much blows the G1 out of the water. I'm sure the iPhone 4 vs EVO battle is much more even, but when comparing the grandaddies that started it all, my eyes have been opened. I'm sure some may consider my descent into Apple territory an ill-informed decision resulting from peer pressure by the sheep-like masses blah blah blah. But i'm just a guy who loves phones and mobile technology who came to realize that there's plenty of room for mobile OS royalty in the tech world. If nothing else Android has become a type of Ralph Nader, forcing Apple to steal some of it's better ideas so as not to lose followers. I shudder to think where iOS would be today if it weren't for Android being right on it's heels. I feel that iOS is better for novices and modding power-users alike. The G1 today is barely usable, but the iPhone 2g is still relevant in my eyes. Android still has the benefit of offering more variety to the consumer, but this is often at the OS's detriment due to fragmentation. Still, if the iPhone had a nice keyboard I probably wouldn't be considering buying the HTC Vision/G1 Blaze this Fall. Yes, even after all that I'm looking forward to Froyo and Gingerbread and seeing where Android takes us.

I've been tracking of all the downloads off of my viewsonic g tablet for dummies site. The number of people who have been downloading stuff really surprises me. It looks like this puppy isn't going away any time soon.

I still use mine daily. I still haven't found a compelling reason to upgrade.

Agreed. I bought a HTV EVO View off of one of the sales on 1saleaday (about $200) because the stylus it uses is significantly better than the regular capacitive stylus. It's my new 'work' tablet, but the Gtablet is still my daily game tablet, Netflix tablet, and other junk tablet. Plus, the ICS development keeps getting better and better...

Other than the screens poor viewing angles, Viewsonic gave us a really nice piece of hardware. Thanks to Flashback and Team DRH this nice hardware can actually do what it's capable of, rather than the crappy TNT thing Viewsonic had on it.

With the exception that the tapntap software, the Gtablet is a beast waiting to get loose. Granted that its getting a little long in the tooth, but with the new roms it just gets better and better.

I've continued to use my lightly since I've gotten it a year or so back. I mainly wanted it to play videos for the kids in the car. I played around with various ROMs, tried Honeycomb but generally wasn't all that impressed and just recently went back to Froyo. Froyo worked pretty well and the UI downgrade from Honeycomb wasn't that big of a deal. But recently I've installed DRH's ICS ROM and it looks pretty darn good, so far it seems the best of both Froyo and Honeycomb, but really better than both. However, that's just an initial impression. Really good stuff that looks to extend the life of the hardware!

mine was out of commission for about 6 months. power connector wasn't working. been really busy, but the wife strong armed me into fixing it. it is working now and it has been a really good tablet. it is my first and only tablet, but i have been satisfied and I really enjoy the versatility. it is a lot of fun to swap out OS and customize. even with the power connector problem, i enjoyed breaking it down and doing some hardware repair.

I use the For Dummies site a lot, it's a great resource for changing ROMs, bootloaders, etc. Haven't bricked once.
My GTab is docked and stashed in a cabinet, where it's connected to my TV by HDMI and a Logitech USB KB/touchpad combo. I use it mostly to watch live streaming sports video (Fox Soccer and ESPN). The setup works fairly well but Flash and the available browsers limit what I can do a bit. Overclocking has made a huge difference with no apparent side effects.
Right now I'm using Mountain Laurel w Clemsyn's kernel after trying a few other ROMs. Hoping ICS will give me everything I'm looking for with my setup.

I made it that way so I could get a feel of how many people still has the gtab. I get about 4 pages of notifications a day. I really thought the downloads would die down after a month or so. Nope, downloads are still going strong.

She may have a couple of years on her (which is alot in the techno world) but is still a LONG way from being a dinosaur. A VERY capable tablet indeed.....which makes it very enjoyable to use, too. On top of the wonderful programmers that tirelessly work on ALL these android devices for their own fun, as well as recognition & knowledge, we were lucky enough to have someone take the time to develope a website like yours Goodintentions. I can only speak for myself but I DO know that is the very place that sparked my initial interest in android devices right from the getgo. And it is all put together in such a way that it was not intimidating or difficult to learn from. I, for one, am VERY grateful.

Ok, bad move on my part in using my box account to keep track of who's downloading. Haha, gtabbers have officially killed my bandwidth of 10gig a month.

My family uses our gtab literally every day. I wish we had another one

We use ours for gaming and my little one takes it to the grandparent's house for YouTube videos. We use it weekly if not daily!

I may be hijacking this thread a bit, but frankly, there is nothing to replace it.
If my requirements are:
1 GHZ Dual core processor
Accelerated Video
(Above two necessitate Tegra 2 or better)
7 or 10 inch screen range
Full USB host port
Mini USB port
HDMI out
(3 above must be available without docking, but adapter cables OK)
WiFi
Bluetooth
...what else meets these, and is really of such quality difference that it is worth upgrading?
I'm not going to buy new hardware just to get a newer OS, so the ICS discussion is not part of this, for me.

I still use my regularly.
I've been following the DRH ICS with some interest.
Clemsyn's Beastly Ultimate with some build changes w/ OC to 1.6mhz is what I use everyday. It's so fast and stable that's it hard justify any changes.

Just got mine today
I picked one up today cause wanted to try it on ics etc.. Really like it so far even though it's still on tapatap..but not for much longer.
Still reading and getting it straight about flashing this .. Flashed other devices lots but each one is a new experience.
Hopefully I get USB support ..that's a big plus for me. Only drawback is poor viewing angles but I can live with them ! So off to grab for dummies...

I picked mine back up just this week's was going to sell it then saw TeamDRH ICS with working hardware acceleration. Running that now. While its pretty cool the ongoing incompatibility with games is still frustrating me.
If only these roms came with a pre configured build.prop to spoof a known compatible device I would be over the moon.

So, I just pulled my server out of the ditch after gtabbers killed my bandwidth. Almost immediately, people started downloading files from my website left and right again.
Simply amazed how many still use my website.

I bought mine a couple months ago from Woot. Got one for a friend as well.
It's still pretty decent compared to what's out there.
No reason to retire it just yet. especially at such a nice price point.

A year on and I still use mine daily, have it docked in my car for GPS navigation (GMaps/Waze) and music/podcast player. (4G Tether and GPS from my android phone)
Once I found a stable enough rom I haven't tried out many of the newer ones.

[Discussion] Praise for the Note 3 even this far in 2014.

For real.
This 2013 phone, still, is one of the most powerful mobile devices in existence (we exclude stuff like Surface Pro 3 and recent Tegra K1 tablets ), even after the Note 4 and the iPhone 6 are out. The quad HD screen on the Note 4 is bound to slow down a little the device, even with the Snapdragon 805 on board (we have to test the Exynos as well, especially after it gets upgraded with Android L).
The 13 mpx camera does a marvelous job in broad daylight, low-light performance has been... well... bad, at least for me. xD But a decent camera overall.
A huge SWAPPABLE battery, we got a ZeroLemon 10 000 mAh, if we so much need juice while on the move.
The SD801 devices are not much of an upgrade because, if we so desire, thanks to the devs who do custom kernels, we can overclock the thing. 64 bit Android devices seem to be on the way, but until then...
Also, DAT AMOLED screen.
Also, DAT USB 3.0. I use it a lot.
So, probably the ONLY phone in existence more powerful is the OnePlus One, and it's not the perfect phone for the lack of microSD slot and the non-removable battery.
And with the Note 4 coming, the Note 3 will get cheaper! Not OnePlus One cheap, probably, but still.
Of course there are things to hate about the Note 3 (plasticplasticplastic, knox, it's damn ugly in white), I find the downsides acceptable compared to the many upsides of this device.
So, unless I'm posting in the wrong section and some mod gets me 1v1 somewhere privately to tell me "thread closed" in no uncertain terms, share your thoughts, please, and call me a Samsung fanboy if you will.

Also, I think I found somewhere another xposed mod that "unlocks" the S5's theme engine because it's baked in the Note 3's recent NG1 build. It's limited, icons and wallpapers only, but it's still a start.
AOSP is the prettiest thing that has graced my screen, but yes, I like the fully functioning camera and the S-Pen's functions intact.
We are sure to get official L on the Nope 3, but it will be in March at the earliest, or January with CM.

Where did you get this information? Google doesn't bring anything about this, neither the hidden ui in ng1 and neither the new s5 xposed module, only the old one.

First of all, Note 3 was among the most powerful phones with the most advanced hardware, at the time of introduction. For example, as far as I know it was the first phone in the world with 3GB RAM and probably no other phone has more even now. CPU is still very competitive, albeit little slower, probably until 64bit CPU/OS is introduced (that's when RAM will probably go past 3GB to support RAM hungry 64 bit system), GPU is also very competitive, especially when you consider newer faster GPU's need to support higher screen resolution. Personally I have nothing against plastic and the way N3 looks, especially that I wouldn't dare to use it without protective case and if somebody can't find case he likes, build or 3D print one yourself. Frankly I think using metal casing is a mistake as it may affect signal reception, especially in marginal cases.
But the fact is, if one, like me for example, wants and uses pen often, there is no other choice, except for Note series. Now, Note 4 is even faster and better than Note3, having pretty much top of the line hardware ATM, but probably not enough to make me upgrade. One thing I wish my Note3 had and would make me upgrade to Note4 was waterproofing, but otherwise I'm very happy with my Note3.
Funny thing is I just run Antutu benchmark today after updating to NF9, the only phone ranking faster than mine was HTC One M8t, yep I don't get it either, since it's pretty much stock rooted, not even overclocked.

Your Thoughts and Opinions on the Galaxy S6

Hey so I just saw a video on the Galaxy S6 and I'm a little unhappy that they're removing the ability to expand memory and swap batteries. But in the end it may be worth it. TouchWiz doesn't look so bad now and I can't even imagine what future phones by Samsung will look like because of this one. Do you think removing the ability to expand memory and swap batteries is a good step in phone development by Samsung?

Just came to learn today that it will leave just over 23 GB out of its base 32 GB model to us. Of course I am not here to moan about the microSD expansion disability. I am just a bit hesitated as the number of my media files is increasing and so is the media file size. The 4k recording is also there. Once they left us with no option to expand memory by ourselves they could have been more economical about the usage of the OS and pre-installed app's memory space.

Definitely will not purchase a Samsung device because they removed those two features. I'll have to wait till Oneplusone 2 comes out and use CM12 on it.

I think you're a bit late to the game with this discussion. This topic has been discussed pretty much in every single thread on this forum.

Thanks, yeah I had a feeling about that. I had a quick skim down the forms and I saw that most topics were about prices for the new devices.
Personally, I don't think it's an issue if they remove those two features. I assume the new devices will have quick charging times similar to the Galaxy Note 4 and the picture and 4k video could simply be moved to your desktop if you have one. So in conclusion, the new devices may be in favor to those who have a pace where they can place the large media files elsewhere.

i understand why they decided not to go for the removable back cover. but, the more I think about it, I can't understand why they can't allow some kind of spring loaded battery and SD card insert on the sides of the phone.

I believe it is because they're aiming for a bit of a more deluxe approach to their new phones similar to the iPhone

i thought the whole "deluxe" feel was about ditching the removable plastic back. i think they could easily retain the feel while adding slots in the sides. maybe they'd have to sacrifice a few mm's to do so, though.

Coming from a Nexus 4 and now a nexus 5 for the past year and a half here are my thoughts
Its no longer beneficial to be in the nexus program. Lollipop has been a buggy mess. I've put up with 2 cycles of really bad cameras and im not waiting for google to fix it. They cant even write a proper camera app. I'm getting home screen redraws and maps crashing. I'm just tired of putting up with the compromises the nexus line brings. It was okay when the phone was $350 but now with the 6 at the same price as the S6. its unacceptable

Camera - Snappy and focuses fast. I think this might be the first time you can actually use an android camera like you use an iphone camera
yes i can get good photos out of my nexus 5 but the subjects must be static and the lighting must be perfect
build. feels very good. very nexus 4 like. feels good in the hand
Software - listen its samsung.Dont expect anything revolutionary in this area. As soon as i get the phone im slapping nova launcher on it and never looking back
It feels fast. I started running wifi direct sharing and bluetooth sharing and couldnt get it to slow up. My nexus 5 receiving the files was slowing down
Display - literally the best you can get on a phone right now. I'm a photo buff so this was huge for me. The nexus 5 display was good but not great. it will be nice to be on a top tier display
Overall im ready to move on from the nexus compromises and seem like i will finally get a phone that has my number 1 want. A solid camera and a good build. I really think samsung did well with the choices the made on this phone. Part of me wants to ride out my nexus 5 until the note 5 but i worry about the size

I finally got to handle some S6 variants in person today.
Did anyone else notice that the white and black colors are different between the standard S6 and Edge? Haven't seen reviewers mention that.
On the standard S6, black is just straight black, but on the S6 Edge, it has a bit of blue tint to it, which looks better in my opinion than straight boring black.
As for white, the standard S6 is again just a straight color, white, but on the Edge, white is really more like a pearl color with more sheen to it, which actually looks worse than straight white in my opinion.
If I go with a standard S6 (most likely), then I will choose white, but if I were going Edge, I would choose the black version as the white Edge looks a bit girly and weird to me with that pearly sheen.

Is it possible to beat this dead horse anymore? DONT BUY IT!!!

I agree about the Nexus 5 and Active S6 may have SD card, WP, replaceable battery.
Lockeskidney, I agree with you about the Nexus. The Nexus seems to run best on 4.4.4 . I like Lollipop but the upgrades did not fix issues. The main and most pressing issue was dropped WiFi and data. I do know how to factory flash, wipe, and setup as new phone. I finally went back to 4.4.4 rooted with xposed and trying to wait until I can figure out what to get. The battery life and camera (slow focus makes it difficult to get the perfect shot--really noticeable when compared to iPhone) need improvements but otherwise a good phone. Loved freedom of unlocked boot loader and being able to root. Tweaks make the phone so much more functional and even can be personalized to individual wants and needs. With that said, I used stock roms with tweaks. Loved cyanogenmod 11 and tried 12 but also had connection issues.
I decided against s6 because the battery will require a service center for more people who are uncomfortable with the teardown procedure required. I have replaced iPhone batteries before and would attempt with Nexus, but s6 is a bit much more than I am willing to risk. This was the deal breaker for me.
Samsung made a point to consider about mixing two types of memory. Still the SD option is nice.
I would have liked waterproofing, but I could have probably fixed that with a case though they can be hard to hear on. Waterproofing built in is a strong plus! Life happens.
I am really tired of the "thinnest phone" form over function. Really, I' d rather have a longer lasting battery, extra storage if needed, and waterproofing. The s5 port looked easy to remove for those who did not want it.
There may be a S6 active variant for those customers on AT&T (and those who can get unlocked). THIS is what I want to see specs on before making decision. Otherwise, I am considering Samsung Note 4 or S5. Looks like it will be the same with exception of having hardware buttons, lower camera megapixels while keeping OIS, no heart rate monitor, and no fingerprint scanner. However, it is rumored to have larger capacity battery ( so maybe no wireless charging which is OK with me), SD slot, and waterproof! That would make sense for the other group of us that value function over form and are putting a case on it anyway . I would like Samsung pay too. For these things I might be willing to try phone as is without modifications.
For the record, I currently came from iPhone and have been using Nexus 5 for about 15 months.

Question No camera updates?

Its been few months since relase and tons of updates, but still, no updates for the camera. How is that possible?
I remember, that S21 Ultra got plenty of camera updates straight out of the box. There was neither one camera update for our S22 Ultra.
Do you think its still coming or we should accept camera as it is ?

If you haven't noticed updates can and do break things. Do you have specific issues?
Invariably Samsung will issues updates for the cam. Unless there's a gross firmware issue(s) the improvements may be more superficial and likely not greatly increase performance.
The more that Samsung seems to emphasize their phone's cam performance, the greater the overall decline in their product. Sammy is drowning in their own hype marketing bs. 2 years straight of not hitting the mark with their flagship phones in my opinion.
This N10+ in my hand isn't small or light but the S22U is bigger, heavier, thicker with a worse display/bevel ratio.
Worse, no expandable storage, SOT isn't better, spen on the wrong side again, in actual usage only barely faster and that all goes to pieces once the ram loads up. Now there are reports of cam issues coming out that appear to be with the optics of the N22U.
Updates will fix some of these issues but not most. Samsung, innovative ball dropping.

What specific issues are you having with the camera? I haven't experienced any problems with taking quality photos. I don't think there is a need for updates unless there are known issues.

This Blackhawk character has been on Note 10's d**k since it dropped and has spammed literally hundreds of threads, where he's just ****ting on every subsequent Samsung release. I think we should get a fundraiser together to get him a new phone. I feel like he can't afford a new one and needs his self worth validated by claiming the Note 10 as the only viable Samsung phone out there It's quiet sad and comical at the same time at this point honestly.

Exactly! I called him out a while back and the moderators deleted my response and basically said dont feed the troll.
Yet they do nothing to stop the trolling. I come here to participate on a forum about my phone and every day the troll with the annoying avatar shows up espousing the virtues of his N10+ and how superior it is to anything else. He's not the only one either but he's certanly the most annoying.

It has issues (towards end of vid)... and so does Android 11 and 12.
Members are posting a crappy blur pattern when trying to simply make a copy of a letter with it too. We'll see what's up when the updates and the dust settles. Regardless it's not not getting a better form factor, any lighter or any more memory. It can never boast a 1.5 tb dual drive or have the advantages that confers.
Actually I did get a new phone half year ago
To be frank I'm napalming Samsung for screwing up again. No token trophies.
