You can't backup without root. You must be rooted. Once you got root. You need to flash custom recovery like (CWM, TWRP or Philz) supported to your model. Then you can go to recovery and get full backup of your Android.

You can also use adb to backup once you have root.

Should I root?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if I should root my nexus 5... What advantages would it have over the unrooted phone apart from custom roms? Any special features?
Thanks!
No special features. But custom roms. Why wouldn't you root? My motto, if you can do it, do it. And put a recovery on.

One silly questions, if i then install a custom rom/ change rom, would all the data be erased?

If it were me, I'd root it, put on a custom recovery, and make a nandroid of it right out of the box. Then I could always go back to brand new easily. Right now there are no custom roms but that will change fast.

CF Auto Root is easy as pie, download and extract the right file, enable USB debugging on the phone, go into fastbootmode, connnect to the PC and select root.window.bat in the extracted file.

You need to use a custom recovery to make a nandroid backup before installing a new ROM but yes, after you root, install a custom recovery, make a backup and copy it to a safe place that won't get wiped during ROM install, you are ready to play around. It is always a good safe practice to already have any necessary drivers on your computer so you can use fastboot to rescue your device if you make a mistake and brick it.

I think you cant backup your current stock rom without rooting... Because to take system backup you need to root...
Just remove your battery... Put it back... And press power+volume button...
You will now go to bootloader menu... Select recovery(select using volume down and press power for slection)
Now you will go to recovery mode... Its factory mode...
After rooting you need to flash RUU rom to go back to unroot stock rom...
after unlocking the boot loader try to backup bro... I am not sure... sorry...

no stock recovery will be there in the stock rom before rooting , using stock recovery you cant install any custom rom or backup your stock rom , so you have to unlock the bootloader first , then you have to root your device , then you have to flash custom recovery like cwm , twrp , younnu's or philz recovery

Restoring using TWRP

Hello,
I am flashing a custom rom and using TWRP for the first time. When restoring, there are 3 checkboxes (system, data, and boot)
What do the boot and system options mean?
Kernel aka boot.img
Keep it checked. Otherwise, you may have an incompatible kernel for your ROM and will get bootloops.

Thanks. So when i install a new rom, i only need to check boot and data?
Because at first, i checked all 3 and i ended up where i started (without the new rom installed).

The restore and backup options have nothing to do with flashing a new rom. When flashing a new rom wipe, system, data cache, and dalvik. Then flash the rom

Also make sure to backup your EFS folder in TWRP and store it on your PC. Better safe then sorry
Not sure what the EFS folder is, but thanks. So i ran into another problem. I lost my root access (not sure how). So i would have to reroot now and i bet that EFS folder is gone. I still have my Nandroid backup from before.
Thanks

You can root with TWRP itself or flash superSU.zip 1.94 (http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip) in recovery. Your EFS folder isn`t gone.

Whenever I do a backup or a restore, I check data, system, and boot.
When installing a new ROM, Wipe System, Data, Cache, and Dalvik. Then flash.
Search the forum for nexus 5 efs backup. Its always a good idea.

So i downloaded the superSU.zip 1.94 file and attempted to flash in TWRP in recovery. The menu options are not the same since i've lost root access. It takes me to the advanced menu with ADB Sideload, Terminal Command, etc. So how do i flash superSU from here? Help please!

[Req] Stock Recovery D80020y

Hi,
I rooted my LG G2 ATT using Stump root, then tried to install TWRP recovery using TWRP Manager, which corrupted stock recovery. as I didn't have unlocked bootloader, I installed AutoRec.apk and successfully installed TWRP recovery to make backup of System.
Now I need to revert to Stock recovery. But Unfortunately I don't have its backup.
Can someone please upload Stock recovery of D80020y?
Thanks

I can send you the same, but problem you would encounter will be, It won't let you flash. As Stock kernel isn't Bumped n best goes with Dorimanx.
So if you still need one, do let m know, I'll hook u up with.
