wondering whether this is a software problem or a hardware issue. Will it be fixed sooner or later?

Seems likely to be hardware related. I have only seen it once or twice and it has to be in the perfect lighting arrangement to really see it. I think it is being blown way out of proportion, it isn't anywhere near as bad as the internet would have you believe.

I've never seen it happen on my pixel and I take a lot of photos. Any camera will show flare if you're shooting towards the light... even my $4k DSLR..

I've seen it often but it doesn't look too bad. I'll attach a picture where it's caused by the backlight of my computer screen
I can reproduce it in certain conditions. For example, I can reproduce the halo on my phone when the light source is facing the opposite direction of the camera and I angle the camera precisely the right away. Aside from that, I've never had it affect any photos unless I'm intentionally trying to get it do so to see what's causing it. I've never had it show up in any of my outdoor photos yet.
It is definitely blown way out of proportion by people on the internet, IMO. It doesn't really happen to me unless I'm shooting right at the sun or a bright light source (which is kind of a bad way to take photographs in general anyway).
I have received my blue Pixel yesterday and thought that Google possibly did something to fix it and didn't expect my unit to have this. An hour ago, I was trying the camera out and was in the kitchen. When the light source was on left from me, then halo appeared, tilting/moving the phone closer towards the left(to the light), then halo started to diminish and after 15-20 degrees it was no longer affecting the shot. The halo thing is easy to spot and user is just able to turn a little and have a perfectly nice shot. I am personally not concerned about this unless the issues would be very severe and would appear in multiple angles. I think the back glass panel could be the issue.

So I jsut updated my google camera app yesterday and was eager to try any new features and test the camera, when all of a sudden I noticed that there is a dark blemish right in the middle of the screen. I am 100% sure it wasnt there when i bought it, as I did tested it extensively. At first I thought that it was actually a screen defect or that there is a smudge on the lenses.
It appears on every photo, HDR or not. It is best visible on light background. You can check the attached test photo i did.
I am not a huge photography fan, but it does bother me alot knowing that my brand new 2 months old nexus defected. Its rooted ofcourse, so there is no guarantee.
I read somewhere that this is caused by a dust particle inside the camera lenses.
So I just wanted to know whether someone else is suffering from that exact same issue. And if there is an easy way to cope with that problem, e.g. disassembling the lense or forcing air into it :silly:
So, yes, any opinions would be welcome.

I wouldn't advise you to open the device up yourself.. You will surely loose warranty if you mess up.
If you think it's a hardware issue then Flash the factory images from Google to return to stock
, reset the tamper flag, lock the bootloader and send it in..

Yep, I can confirm the same experience as you! Only appeared yesterday! I have the Rev11 Hardware.
A bit of googling did reveal others with the same issue...
I have tried a can of compressed air, tapping phone...No joy, it's still there...
I have also tried different camera apps to confirm. Interestingly it was post updating the google camera app too. (but i do not believe this too be the root cause, I've had many specs of dust in my DSLRs before and to appears to me to be dust on the rear of the lens or on the sensor!) I would expect these to be sealed on our phones!
RMA, warranty...are looming...any other ideas peeps?

I tried the tapping trick too - did not work for me either
I'm still contemplating over the idea of reverting to stock, locking the bootloader and sending in my faulty unit. It would probably take a couple of weeks and I don't want to part ways with my N5 for so long. But living with that nasty blemish on my camera is equally frustrating

I had this issue a few months back; the image you posted looks identical to the issue I had.
Google covered it under warranty and sent me a new device. They asked me to do a full factory reset to confirm it wasn't software related. The process was pretty smooth: if they do send you a new device, you just send your N5 back once it comes so you're not stuck without a phone for a while or anything. They do put a hold on your credit card for the price of the phone until they get your phone, though.
I had it rooted and everything prior to sending it in, but I unrooted/reset the tamper flag before sending it in (and did a factory reset obviously).
I have the same problem but with Nexus 5x. Not 100% sure was the dark spot in the middle at the beginning or not. Now the device is about a week old.
On my small Pixel (black 128GB edition) I get severe lens flares in situations, that were never a problem for any smartphone before.

I'd like to know if there are devices out there that don't have this problem. You won't see it in all lighting situations, but it's very pronounced in some - where it shouldn't be.
I have.noticed this today on my camera I attached a photo the halo or flair can be seen at the bottom the pale grey around the bottom left and right. Like you say, it's only in certain light conditions and certain angles. Must be the glass that surrounds the lense.
Looks like the the phone has been rushed out and not tested properly.

This is definitely a design floor as happens if the camera is on its sides, upside down and normal. Really didn't expect this from such a highly priced phone.

This is happening to me as well. Definitely a deal breaker, unless covering the glass with a case fixes the problem. It's a shame, because the camera blows everything else out of the water.
Been in contact with EE and they have said my handset is defective so they are sending me a new one tomorrow. Excellend support from them, Thought it would have been a pain in the arse

Well be prepared for disappointment. My phone has it too. I guarantee every Pixel does. Probably because of the subtle curve on the rear glass.

Yeah I'm not going to hold my breath, but the guy who done the video in the first post had two pixels and only one of them done.this. I'll just keep returning them until I get one that works

Do you really believe they are going to eliminate the halo with that approach?
No way. It's a design flaw. The question is how does that digital picture site
give this phone such a high rating and they never saw this in any of their pictures?
This just doesn't add up. I am awaiting the XL to come back in stock to order
but this is a deal breaker for me unless this is a defect on a few phones.

DxOMark actually did mention the lens flare/halo if you read the entire review... they just call it something more technical.
Yes, I fully believe they will be able to correct for this issue, at least SOMEWHAT, in software. I think the question will be whether or not they can actually preserve detail in the area where the flare is occurring. Google has pulled off some amazing feats with this camera just because of its software... they're not going to claim to do something they can't do.

According to Google, yes. The lens assembly is subject to very tight manufacturing tolerances. Every Pixel is going to have this issue.
Got my new phone, and as stated above I still have the flair so I'm really.imterested into what Google can actually do. I'm off to the park with my dog layer so I'll take lots of photos and upload them here if they have any flare issues.
Don't accept this. Take it back to your point of sale. Get another phone. I am so ****ing done with this.

Out of maybe 100 photos I have taken with this phone, you can maybe see it in like 3-4 photos. Only really happens on my end if I am shooting directly into a light source which most photos are pointing away from a light source. It's not like every photo comes out like this.
I am very very happy with this phone and the camera.

Just been to the park and took some photos only one photo out of about 50 had a halo. I believe Google will fix this.

see, I'm not really the impatient kind of guy, I have lived through all the LG G4 issues, I had my deviced repaired three times. People make mistakes, so do major companies.
But one thing I really don't fancy is the feeling of being mocked. Right now, I'm really considering returning my XZP and kissing Sony good bye for good.
Here's why:
My smartphone has some random weird bugs:
- the front facing speaks just switch off randomly until restart
- the screen sometimes flickers until I turn adaptive illumination off and on again
- did anyone here check only reviews? Most hail the camera for its impressive quality. What quality!? My old G4 beats the XZP under all conditions, the G2 is at least very very close - and it's now four years old.
- and the distortion issue.
I mentioned a few things on the Sony forum and for some weird reason all of these threads just disappear into thin air. When contacting the Sony support, they'd advise me to do a software reset (MoFo please!).
Is this a bad joke? Is that how Sony wants to get back in the game of top-notch smartphones? I'm beginning to understand all the promos for those who preordered - they knew what they had coming.

I mean, especially talking of the distortion issue - that is not just me. That is most likely with all devices or at least a very very big share. How come they just ignore that? And here I just picked up two Premiums haha. Sorry that you're unhappy.
I don't think Sony is ignoring anything. But it is not even fully released yet around the world. I am sure they are aware of the issues and "hopefully" will come up with a patch to remedy all the big issues. As for your particular phone you may have received a lemon and simply need to replace it. I can appreciate the major hassle of doing such a thing but it is an unfortunate reality in today's world. I say all this as an owner of the black version of the xz premium and I love it. I am not having the major issues that some are having. Got it from the UK.
Most definitely a defective unit. Speakers turning off until restart? Not gonna have any of that lol. RETURN FOR ANOTHER UNIT IF POSSIBLE!
My own case is different, I feel like I've got the best device for me at the moment.

Well you definitely are suffering from the distortion issue, all XZP phones have it. Open up a grid pattern on your PC screen or take a picture of a brick wall. You will definitely notice a pincushion deformation at the edges of the picture.

This is just like those idiots who bought a thousand dollars wide angle DSLR lens and complain about distortion by shooting only brick walls all day.
Wide angle has distortion! It is tough to get rid of it physically in the glass already for full size camera, let alone getting rid of it in a lens the size of a pea!
If the lens on the phone can be that perfect, you will be paying well over $1000 for the phone itself!
If camera is all you care, go get Huawei's P9/P10!

People don't do doesn't mean issue is gone. Xperia Z3 compact has wide angle lens too, it doesn't have such significant distortion. Galaxy S7 also has large FOV lens, but their developer gave an auto-correction option. We payed almost same price, and Sony said its camera is perfect in ad.s
what's more, wide angle lens won't take photos like this, it's the damn lens correction software fault
Sony just manage to balance its cheque book in the mobile field. Honestly, allow them time to cure it, Sony deserve to stay.
All I wanna point out is that, it is not really big issue unless you shoot picture of computer mon, grid or brick wall all day. And many people mixed the distortion with typical wide angle lens perspective distortion, which created more chaos than necessary.
Many people still shooting great picture of people and scenary, so stop worrying so much. Have fun with the phone, when times come the firmware upgrade, we will get even better grid/brick wall pictures.

Sony saving its mony in a wrong way. They deliver the best cmos, but do less work on software. Photos still look painted, and without OIS (EIS only in Video mode), it is hard to take a perfect photo at night

I am suffering from the distortion issue right now ,bought it because I saw the ad shows a perfect camera on this phone.
Well, true, they need more effort on software side. Again, they are in the right step with the new managment focusing on collaboration between departments, time will tell how much better they will do. Previously they don't collaborate.
Now this really isn't an issue at all but it was pointed out by my friend. There may be other ways of noticing the same but here's how I do it.
Sit in a dark room, as dark as possible (best at night).
Increase the brightness to maximum.
Open any video on MX Player, pause it and zoom out (decrease video size) as much as possible.
Observe the corners around the chin of the device. You should see some light leaking through.
Now of course this isn't an issue you'd encounter normally but it just kinda freaked us out. Any idea what might be causing it? I have no technological knowledge about displays except for the fact that pixels are turned off for black areas in AMOLED displays. We don't have navigation keys backlight either.

There should be no light leak/bleed on an AMOLED screen phone, that is common for IPS screens.

Doubt it's possible to have "rogue" pixels but I will have to see for myself when mine arrives. But my friend who has it never complained about it, so I have a feeling only a certain batch of them might have this issue.
There also might be a chance it's related to software, so did you try using another rom?

It certainly is weird. I mean that light bleed doesn't exactly appear to be "rogue" pixels either. Plus it's rather too dim to be noticed unless you're sitting in an absolutely dark room with your brightness maxed out and about 75% of the screen totally black (which would rarely ever happen). I believe it could be possible that every unit has this but never really has been noticed by anyone.
The issue isn't that great for me to switch to another ROM and test it. Just wanted to bring this to everyone's notice. I'm on OOS 5.1.11 (rooted)

I did not send them back because of this tho, however i also recognized that both of them had really bad uniformity issues and it looked like the edges were bleeding. I observed that on a white background. I am living in germany and ordered from amazon, the second one got dust in it's front camera lense, when it arrived and the first one was emitting a loud static noise, like coil whine. It's insane, I just want a proper working phone. Not sure, whether I should order a 3rd one.

Wow that's a really big let down on Amazon's part to send defective units, and that too twice! However, I checked my screen for any such uniformity issues both on black and white but didn't find any such except for this one. Yea, yours is definately fine. I'd be happy, if I got one like that.
I ordered from Amazon, because I heard the OnePlus support is really unprofessional sometimes and certain things take ages.
Did you guys order it from the official store?
Edit: That being said I wouldn't worry that much about it, if I were you.

Not worrying over it at all! After all, who keeps the brightness at maximum in a dark room.

When i try to focus on an object with wide lens the following artifacts appear. Even when i save the picture the halo is still there. Has anyone got similar results or do i have a defective device?

I just tried to replicate this with mine, but no "luck" - I don't see this effect...
But then I'm not in as bright surrounding as you seem to be is this effect always visible or only in bright lighting?
Just a thought may be that a lens protector (glass or plastic) could have such an effect....
I could only reproduce it on the beach scenery. Ill post a video to show you exactly how its reproduced
By the way no lens protector is installed.

Let's hope the woman in the GIF doesn't read and interprete that the way only women are able to interprete statements.
I have no idea about the cause - but I believe you still deserve an answer.
Questions: Where does the effect occur? Only in the viewfinder and/or in the finished picture? (I read your first post, still wish to make sure I got everything right.)
Does it happen with still photos or videos?
Does it also happen if you hold the phone horizontally (landscape)?
Which firmware version?
I tried to reproduce that fault although I had no ocean at hand - but never succeeded to achieve that effect.
Must be a software problem, maybe a firmware update solves it. Or a hard reset - but I don't like suggesting the typical manufacturer's helpdesk suggestion if they haven't got any clue but wish to get rid of the customer quickly.

Both viewfinder and finished picture. I could only reproduce it when the background was a beach only with wide lens. Ill try testing when the background is flat maybe in a field or something. I think thats the trigger with the halos. Didnt try it on video though. Firmware wise am on . 121.
And my woman should stay away from xda. For my sake

Due to the lower color depth, your GIF shows "banding", larger areas of the same color/brightness. Interestingly, it's one of these "bands" with gets replaced by white.
And if this phenomenon only occurs with a beach scene, it might be small areas of extreme brightness (like sun reflections in the water) triggering a software fault.
At least that's my guess. And that's why I mentioned I had no ocean at hand for trying.
Nokia's N8 had a similar, but not identical problem: If there were tiny spots of extreme brightness in a scene, the software rendered white circles or halos around that spots. Much smaller and perfectly circular, also the circles were solid white, not "just" rings like in your photos.
Maybe it's a similar thing with the P40 Pro.
The good news: It's a software problem which can be solved.

Same with me. There's a lot of nuisances with the camera software, especially with the real bad, non-practical UI, but overall the P40 Pro really tops all of it's competition.
Let's just hope Huawei gets aware of the problems, soon.

There's no other living beings on earth being perfectly able to interprete nice words as bad words like women.
That's my understanding too. Ultra bright areas confuse the software. I reported it to their support team. Maybe there will be a fix. Am sure if more people will encounter it as soon as they go to a beach it will be reported and hopefully we get a fix. Wide lens on such scenery is a must anyways.
